Film is a form of art, and thought it required artistic and academic respect. Slide 3 A group of Frence film makers stated writing a magazine to share ideas of film, building on Alexander Astruc ideas. They created the name 'Auteur' after publishing an article called 'Les Politiques des Auteur'. Auteaur meaning author. They expressed how they thought film required respect as directors used signifying features in their film, so we know its theirs like Hitchcock and Welles. They respected films from Amercia because at the time French film refered to 'Cinema du Papa' which meant the films like portrayals of books and plays and were followered accurately, old dad like films, stuck in their ways. If they didn't it was regarded as a bad film. The alternative to this type of film was Slapstick, which seemed like intelligent to them and therefore more academic and intellectual content to them. Polemic (argument on paper). Director Jean luc Goddard was one filmaker who created films that experimented with film like shots with the boom mic in, keeping the real sound, in order to establish how film was quite artifical. Andrew Sarris thought the meaning of Auteur was a theory. He agreed with the french in that he wanted there to be more academic respect for Hollywood, as academic though film was a 'lower class' medium. He set about establishing a Film canon, using the Auteur theory to meaure the quality of a director and see whether they were 'worthy' of a Film Canon. For directors to achieve this acclaim, the were required to be an 'expert' in all film making, have as much control over ALL the film as possible, move film on in some way, and have the director create symbols and hidden messages in the film, so that the audience was 'clever' enough to interpret them. For example production related jokes could be included in the film, or in the case of Alfred Hitchcock, he was make cameos in all his films. Slide 6 Andrew Sarris, in comtemporary times, is now regarded as mistranslating Auteur, by grading film, and seeing it as a 'theory'. Les Cahiers de Cineme were the most accurate in their interpretation, that film should be respected and what they were trying to do was expand film so the creative content was accessable everywhere. Auteur as a theory is doesn't work too well because everyone is different and can interpret film in their own way, there for it can not be levelled as good or bad, but can be distinguish by director characteristics, and by the director being a progressive film maker.
