Israeli artist Jordana Klein has been painting a blend of abstract and realism, objects and spirituality for over 30 years.

The Land of Israel is described as “A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey (Deuteronomy 8:8).” These seven species were the staple foods consumed by the Jewish people in the Land of Israel during biblical times, and are traditionally eaten on Sukkot, the “Festival of Booths”. Featured on our cover is Klein’s rendition of Seven Species 3.
We invite you with open arms back to Shaare Zedek. There is nothing like the energy of our congregation, alive with love and devotion. We look forward to seeing you in person, praying and kibbitzing together, with a renewed commitment to faith, family, and community.

During the month of Elul, we blow the shofar every morning. The sound of the shofar is intended to be an alarm clock. It shocks us awake, to get up from our comfortable beds and go out into the world, where there is work to be done.
Rabbi Alan W. Bright

This past year, although with its difficulties, has seen a gradual return to normalcy, from the last two years, wherein we were prevented from coming together for our communal prayers. We now need to vigorously boost the return to shul, making it possible for God to be “amidst” us. Joining services via Zoom or live streaming isn’t the same.
May 5783 be a year in which God comes to the shul to find us physically here, together.
Why would God be so angry just because there isn’t a minyan? After all, it’s permitted to pray alone. The Talmud asserts that judgment happens to the entire nation at once as we pass before God’s throne on Rosh Hashanah. It also reminds us that praying together gives us strength. We know scientifically that behavioural change is generally successful only when the people around us support that change. The rabbis were no fools; they knew this too. By coming together in the room, we build the community that supports each of us to do better. But even more than that, when we show up in the room together, we
Why does the Torah stress the word “amidst?” The reason is that our sages consider the group’s physical presence to be essential to prayer, both to God and to one another.
The Talmud tells us that when the Holy One enters a synagogue and does not find ten people there, God immediately becomes angry (Berachot 6b) as it is stated: “Why when I came, was there no one? When I called, there was no one to answer...? (Isaiah 50:2)
That is why watching from the comfort of our homes is the antithesis of what the holidays stand for. We should be embracing the return towards one another, in our room, our communal home, where we might be a little uncomfortable, but we understand, it is necessary to be there for one another, in person, as a community, so that each of us can do better, support one another and grow as a stronger community.
interact and can hear about what is going on in the lives of the community in a way that cannot happen through passive participation over the internet. And when we are in the room together, if someone falls, we can hold out a hand to help them back up; literally, but also, figuratively, when we see people, we truly ‘see’ when things might not be okay for them and can reach out in person.
L’Shana Tova U’metukah.
I shall be sanctified amidst the children of Israel. (Vayikra 22:32)
This year, we are blessed to be able to join together in person. I urge you to return to shul and stand with me before God, and plan together the ways that we can participate in making the world a fit throne for God’s presence.
“Why, when I came, was there no one?” (Isaiah 50:2)

I wish my Shaare Zedek family a Shana Tovah Oovree’ah - a healthy good year!
I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada to loving parents Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Messody Krispine. I have an older brother and sister. Growing up, I attended Talmud Torah Elementary School where I then went on to graduate from Herzliah. Following high school, I enrolled at Vanier College where I continued my studies in Social Sciences. Needing more of a purpose in life, I left to Israel so that I could study in a Yeshiva. This was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I decided to become a cantor at the age of 21 in a synagogue in Cote Saint-Luc called Kol Yaacov. Throughout the years, I have worked in many synagogues in Montreal as well as in Florida. Today, I live in Montreal with my beautiful wife and young children. Despite my busy schedule, l have devoted my time to giving Bar Mitzvah lessons for the past 25 years as well as performing at numerous weddings and funerals.
I am so honoured and happy to be part of my new synagogue. Since the first day I joined Shaare Zedek, I have met such amazing people who welcomed my family and me with open arms. My goals for this year will be to start a children’s choir, to enrich the B’nai Mitzvah Program and the Yahrzeit Program.
Finally, after a short announcement from the cantor, the most beautiful and meaningful theme in the cantorial repertoire: a lullaby in a surprising major scale. It announces “Rahem Arahamenu” - I will have mercy for him. It is music that penetrates the hearts and wets the eyes.
I wish everyone a Shana Tova filled with love, happiness, and a long and healthy life.

The Rosh Hashanah Musaf prayer includes three sections: “Kingships”, “Remembrance”, and “Shofar Blasts”. In “Remembrance”, there is an emotional part that deals with Efraim (the son of G-d, and another name for Israel), who sinned in the past. Efraim later regrets and wants to return home, however is afraid that he will be refused after all he has done. In Jeremiah 31:19 it is written: G-d loves Efraim (Israel) and is willing to forgive and embrace him as soon as he returns - without reservation.
Message from our Hazzan Sheini
Cantor Boaz Davidoff

There is a magnificent cantorial composition from the classical composer Louis Lewandowski, a cantor in Vienna during the romantic era. It begins with a strong fanfare style announcement by the Cantor, as the prophet commands by the name of the Lord: “go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying - thus says the Lord”. The music then becomes mellow and compassionate - talking about the memories the Lord has for the people of Israel that marched after him in the wilderness for 40 years. The next section is strong and conveys the character of the Lord: he is also loyal to us, and will stay loyal to Efraim forever.
Shanna Tova Oometookah - Happy sweet New Year! How lucky we are to be linked to Shaare Zedek - the gates of justice, through them we are getting closer to heaven and to G-d 118:19. We will try to get closer to heaven with music, by analyzing one of the most meaningful prayers for the High Holy Days.

Shaare Zedek has been an integral part of my life for over 60 years. As a young boy I attended services and was active in USY and the SZ after-school program. Friends and I even enjoyed ball hockey games in the basement hall and worked at the coat check during weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. I wasn’t in it for the money, just the unlimited eggrolls! Joanne and I were married by Rabbi Lefell and Cantor Fogel. Lifecycle events further tightened the bond as my son was Bar Mitzvahed at SZ and my three children were all wed by Rabbi Bright. Brises and baby namings for my seven grandchildren followed. Besides the good times, the synagogue provided comfort and support when my parents passed. I stay involved to ensure that the next generation has the same opportunities that were afforded me.

It is important to support your Shaare Zedek family, to support your faith, and to support your community.
Bonnie and I wish you a sweet and healthy year filled with blessings of peace, love and laughter. L’Shana Tovah!
Mark Merson, President Stronger Than Ever!
Being part of Shaare Zedek allows you to be part of a larger community. Being part of Shaare Zedek means promoting values and traditions that you hold dear. Being part of the Shaare Zedek family teaches future generations that being a Jew matters. Being part of Shaare Zedek means that there will always be High Holy Day services for you and the community. Being part of Shaare Zedek means even if your participation ebbs, there is always room for you - you can always come home.
I became president of Shaare Zedek at one of the most difficult times in its history; following a global pandemic and at a point where the affiliation with Conservative synagogues in Montreal and throughout North America is dwindling. My goal, along with Rabbi Bright, Cantor Boaz and Hazzan Sheini Ariel, is to ensure that Shaare Zedek Congregation remains relevant in the lives of Jews in our community.
On behalf of Joanne and my family, I wish you all a Shana Tovah Umetukah, a sweet, healthy and prosperous New Year.
We support all things Jewish, let’s support our Synagogue!

Throughout my three years as your President, I never envisioned the changes with lockdowns and capacity limitations. Pre-pandemic, congregants came to synagogue and it was always a pleasure to reconnect with familiar faces. To converse, laugh, sing, and pray together. Yahrzeits were commemorated, High Holy Days were celebrated, and we had a regular group attending minyans and Sabbath services. Faith, family, and community made the experience so meaningful. While our customs and habits changed and members shied away from attending in person, the door to Shaare Zedek is now wide open and we are pleased to welcome you back. I am confident our traditions will return stronger than ever. I will always hold a close affinity to Shaare Zedek, and I hope you do too. The future is in our hands. Thanks to our members’ generous contributions, government assistance, and angel supporters, we weathered the pandemic storm. As a shul we are counting on your continued support and your personal commitment to our religious services and programs.
I first came to Shaare Zedek with founding members of the Congregation. I joined the shul and the Sisterhood where I found kindness and friendship. I found religious and secular activities. It is a worthwhile place to volunteer and to hope for its future.

My connection with Shaare Zedek began in 1967 when I was seven years old. My dedication to the synagogue is based on fond memories, family connections, spiritual bonds, friendships and companionship. These inspire me to give my time to Shaare Zedek, which means to you, the members.
After joining Shaare Zedek I surprised myself by going to Shul on Saturday mornings, not because I was religious, but because it was a wonderful place to be. Participating in the prayers and listening to the Hazzan is refreshing and relaxing for my mind and body. Volunteering is as much as you put into it, but truthfully, you meet lots of wonderful people and the reward is great.
For my family and me Shaare Zedek is not just a Shul. It is more than a place of worship, it is a place where we gather and socialize to maintain our Jewish identity. Its inclusive and haimish values make it welcoming to everyone. I look forward to celebrating many more simchas here.

I was President of SZC for four wonderful years. This is my religious home and I’m trying to do whatever I can to maintain its viability for the long-term future. Hopefully, most of our members concur with my desires. Please help me and yourself.
Service at Shaare Zedek is a family affair for me! I am proud and excited to sit on the Board of Directors to ensure our shul fulfills the needs of today’s families, and so that it may continue to grow as a strong community.
Raised by a family with historic roots of giving back, community service is a value I hold dear to my heart. Being a part of SZ is not only exciting, but spiritually fulfilling. Like a kibbutz, we must all do our part to ensure the success of our community, synagogue, and Jewish way of life while building intergenerational connections in our community.
The first time I came to Shaare Zedek on a Shabbat, I was greeted by a member who asked who I was and why I came that day. That person seemed honoured by my choice to attend and made sure to introduce me around. This is how we as a congregation share our vision of family, faith and community. As a Board Member, I can show respect for my fellow members by doing my part in keeping our motto alive.

SZ is not only a place of worship but also my family and my community. I want our synagogue to thrive and to be able to help as many people as it has helped me. Keeping our religion alive and relevant and reminding ourselves what it means to be a proud Jew.
Since the first day I contacted Shaare Zedek, I was welcomed and guided on my Jewish learning. Today, as a member of the Shul, I feel part of its future and I hope we all stand for our Faith and Community.
Belonging to a synagogue community that shares core values, and regularly experiencing rituals with this community is an essential part of life. Many have lost sight of the important role synagogue plays. I give my time to SZ in the hope that SZ will continue to be here for us and future generations.
Twenty years ago my family and I attended Rabbi Bright’s Installation and it was then we decided that Shaare Zedek is where we belong. Coming from an Orthodox Congregation where Jack had been President, this was huge. We found members that welcomed us and have become good friends. The inspiration we receive at services is most heartfelt and we truly enjoy the clergy and members. This is why we belong.
It is an honour and a privilege to serve on the Board of Directors. Shaare Zedek has welcomed me with open arms and has always been there for me and my family. I volunteer to give back to those who were there when I joined but also to create a space for families like mine to have a welcoming synagogue to call their own for generations to come.

TOMORROW’S FUTURE
Message from our Executive Director
We had a lovely past few months at Shaare Zedek. Our in-person Passover seder was a success and Cantor Boaz Davidoff joined us for Shavuot. As restrictions have faded, we have returned to in-person services while maintaining our Zoom and live-streaming options. I invite more of you, who can, to join us and enjoy the companionship that comes with personal attendance, both for Shabbat and for the daily services. At the Annual General Meeting held on June 21, 2022, the changes expanding women’s participation in services were ratified by the membership. I am excited to welcome our new Hazzan Sheini, Ariel Krispine to our Shaare Zedek family. A special thank you to Gershon Katz for his services.
The past few months have been very busy at Shaare Zedek. We hosted numerous Bar Mitzvahs, Weddings, Brises, Kabbalat Shabbats, committee meetings, lectures, and book clubs for hundreds of people which has been most welcome after several difficult years due to the pandemic. It’s such a joy to see happy faces and people gathering to celebrate milestone events. Smiles and laughter are contagious and the spirit among those attending in person is terrific. The building looks great since our recent renovations and is ready to welcome everyone back in person. Our online technology allowed people to connect and participate from around the world. It’s a wonderful and beautiful thing, and that will certainly continue. But it can never replace “presence” and coming together in our physical space. We are inviting you to come back to our physical home and join us if you are able to. Come pray with us, meet other Shaare Zedek family members, sing, smile, and learn. That physical presence makes a difference. Whether you come for Shabbat, a Yahrzeit to honour a loved one, or simply our daily services, you will feel the warm embrace of Shaare Zedek when you are here. Looking forward to seeing you in shul.

Message from our Choir Director
Torah learning, for the sake of itself, is a remarkable feat. I commend the people who join our class week after week, year after year to try to better themselves and the world around them. The goal for our class is to recognize how important it is to love your neighbour as yourself. When we are done studying each Wednesday, we have just one more piece of that puzzle to answer the age-old question, “What is this all for and why am I here on earth?” Torah study allows the class to come together and to try and figure out all of life’s trials and tribulations through our sacred text. It is a never-ending challenge and the “hunt” for the answer opens new doors and questions. Torah is a timeless, profound work and it is a pleasure to study with this group.

My association with the Shaare Zedek Congregation Choir spans more than half a century. From its inception, under the direction of Samson Rosemarin, I began my singing career as a child soprano in the original choir. Following my fourteen-year hiatus with the Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue choir, I returned to sing with our synagogue choir along with my late father, Saul. I was particularly blessed to be able to sing alongside him and one of my sons, three generations of one family in the same synagogue choir, for more than twenty years. Our choir is really a family and I am honoured to have been its director for the past fifteen years. We are a dedicated group of volunteers who, with our love of singing and music, work very hard to embellish the High Holy Day Services at SZ. Shana Tovah.
Elizabeth Bright
Hi everyone, it is Elizabeth Bright here and I want to tell you a bit about my Torah Class. Every Wednesday for 20 years I have been teaching Torah to the Shaare Zedek Family and the community at large. It is a great joy for me to be able to discuss and learn with everyone. The class was held in the library of the synagogue until March 2020. In order not to stop the flow of Torah learning, we decided to continue through the Covid shutdown on Zoom. This proved to be a blessing in disguise. I have gained students from all over Montreal and the world. Now I have students from Ontario, Newfoundland, Israel, Florida and Laval! All the students are known to me, and all have some connection to Shaare Zedek. I look forward to opening my class up again later in 2022. As of now, the class is closed as we are in the middle of our studies.

A Year Of Holidays With Rebbetzin Bright
Explore the Jewish holidays with Elizabeth Bright. In this class we will learn about the Jewish holidays, what its Torah origin is, the different customs associated with the holiday and the food pairings that we all love. Classes will be held in person on the first Tuesday of each month.

At Shaare Zedek this year we have co-sponsored the Torah Fund event with Shaare Zion Sisterhood, continued Book Club in hybrid form, and continue to contribute to the needs of the congregation.
Our most exciting project was co-sponsoring the Regional Conference on Zoom. The theme, Yishuv Ha Olam, Sustaining Ourselves, was emphasized by Rabbi Bright’s Dvar Torah. Keynote speaker, Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin, discussed the ethical and practical aspects. Afternoon workshops on the environment and treatment of victims needing help followed. The day ended with a concert from Cantor Heather Bachelor. We have much to think about. Thanks are due to our members for their donations, Rabbi Bright, Billy, Wendy, Sara and Roberto for all their help. We wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and peaceful New Year.

This year’s Torah Fund Event on May 19 was well attended and very successful. Our guest speaker, Rabbi Adina Lewittes, led an interesting, informative, and thought-provoking discussion titled: “Talking about Intermarriage – a values-based perspective”. Rabbi Lewittes inspired us with her vast knowledge of Jewish text and wisdom, touching many of the attendees personally. Multi-faith and multi-heritage marriage is resulting in changes within our Jewish families and our congregations. Our many thanks to those who participated, donated, and made our annual event phenomenal. The recording of the Torah Fund Event 2022 may be found on YouTube.

A cosy armchair is ideal for feeding babies. The other furnishings and prints by Annette Joseph ensure an atmosphere of comfort and serenity. We loved creating this place! Being a part of the SZ family provides the meaningful connection I had always been yearning for. I am humbled to continue my deep commitment to the continued success and future of Shaare Zedek so it may thrive for generations to come. I am excited about the opportunities ahead for our wonderful congregation. I humbly thank you for this meaningful honour.
Norm Spatz - Chatan Bereshit
Many of you know me from my voice echoing in the acoustic background of online services or my occasional time at bat leading Kabbalat Shabbat. What a wonderful surprise that my participation in the life of the synagogue is so valued that I have been named Chatan Bereshit.
When I wandered into Shaare Zedek four years ago, what attracted me was the pleasure of harmonizing with Rabbi Bright. Once lockdown started, daily services became my escape from loneliness and isolation, and I was soon embraced by a welcoming community. What keeps me coming back are the many relationships I established during daily minyans, and the pleasure I get from weekly services with the Rabbi and with Cantor Boaz.

When I returned to Montreal from living in Newfoundland & Labrador for a few years, I wanted more than ever to be part of a Jewish community. I was looking for a synagogue where the place would feel like home and the people like family, and it is here at Shaare Zedek that I found it all. We received a warm welcome, and many kind words at the passing of my father-in-law and then, more recently, when my mother passed away. The many simchas that have been shared with our Shaare Zedek community have had a positive impact on my life. I have accepted to serve on the Board of Directors and been involved with various committees in the last few years. Receiving this honour on Simchat Torah is something that touches my heart deeply as it comes from a community that is my home. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to give back to you, in hope of seeing our shul continue to thrive and grow.
15
From day one, Shaare Zedek, Rabbi Bright, Elizabeth, the Bright family, and numerous members of the shul welcomed us with open arms and warm hearts, making Shaare Zedek the place we belong.
At Cégep du Vieux Montréal, where I taught for more than 25 years, we were counselled to build a postretirement life. My time at Shaare Zedek has become an important part of the mix that I have woven together to create a surprisingly vibrant lifestyle in retirement. The irony for me of receiving this honour is that I don’t feel that my relationship with Shaare Zedek is one of service. It is one of pleasure and growth. How nice to discover that my participation in the life of the synagogue is so valued!

Growing up without a religious identity was something I knew from an early age was missing in my life. What attracted Marc and me to Shaare Zedek was the feeling we all get the moment we enter the sanctuary. We are home. What a blast everyone had bowling together in February at Rose Bowl! Mom, and Shaare Zedek Board Member, Kim Faerman, did a fantastic job organizing this fun event.

This year our Shavuot celebrations were kicked off with Lili’s online cooking class making delicious cheese blintzes. At Shavuot services we honoured our newest Jews by Choice. The sanctuary and our ears were filled with joy and delight as Elyse Wolman cantillated the Book of Ruth.

Dorothy Tonchin was the first woman to chant a Haftarah. She inspired me to do one as well and Billy Booth kindly offered to teach me. Although it took me a while - with lots of thoughts of giving up (it was much easier to learn when I was 12 years old!) - I chanted the Haftarah on June 11, 2022.

Paula
I was fortunate to have been educated in a Jewish day school. I celebrated my Bat Mitzvah by reciting a Haftarah at a Friday night service, as women were not permitted on the Bima on Saturday.
I chanted the Haftarah proudly for all the women and girls of the Congregation. I did it for my sister, my daughter, my daughters-in-law, and my friends, because it isn’t a privilege - it’s a right. Most of all, I did it for my late mother, who would have sat proudly in the front row with tears in her eyes and would have applauded loudly.
Tallissim for our Women
26
For a few years, I attended another synagogue where women are part of the Services and are counted. I was delighted to get my first Aliyah and continued to attend because I felt accepted, but I missed Shaare Zedek and its warm welcoming community, and so I came back and joined the synagogue.
On the High Holy Days this past year, Rabbi Bright gave a wonderful sermon about the attendance at Services. He talked about counting the Torah or a woman if there were only 9 men present. And he said, “This stops now!” From that moment, I have tried my best to attend Services whenever I can and am pleased to be part of the Minyan. Sometimes I arrive just as Services are beginning and I am happy to hear, “Good, we have a Minyan!”
In 1994, my father passed away and I said Kaddish for him at Shaare Zedek Congregation, as it was just around the corner from where I lived. I was welcomed and I made friends with the other women who were saying Kaddish. The men were also very welcoming and supportive. The Services were usually well attended and we almost always had a Minyan. However, there were times when we could not say Kaddish because there were not 10 men present.
One day, one of the men asked me not to attend Services on the following Sunday, because there was a Men’s Club breakfast and he wanted me to slice the tomatoes. I didn’t come to Services that day, and stayed away for a long time after that.
A tallit is a treasured symbol of respect in the Jewish faith. Following the ratification of the roles of women at our synagogue, we have six beautiful tallit donated by the Shaare Zedek Sisterhood. These gorgeous tallissim are available for all women receiving an aliyah.
