Introducing the book of Hebrews by Ben Reynolds

During July and August 2022, Spring Garden’s preaching series will be on the Letter to the Hebrews. Hebrews is one of the New Testament letters, and it begins the second section of letters. The second set of letters – Hebrews to Jude – are called the “catholic” or “general” epistles because they are written to general audiences. Paul’s letters, on the other hand, are written to specific churches or individuals, such as to the churches in Rome and Philippi or to Timothy and Titus. Hebrews has always overwhelmed me, but the letter has grown on me the more I have studied it, even if I still remain overwhelmed. I see Hebrews as a beautiful and powerful challenge to believers. The letter is primarily concerned with encouraging readers to remain firm in their faith in Jesus and not to drift away or fall into disobedience. These concerns are repeated throughout Hebrews. Hebrews 2:1 says, “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it” (ESV). The author writes that we are of Jesus’s household “if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope” (Heb 3:6). There are calls to “hold fast to the confession” (4:14) and “with confidence draw near to the throne of grace” (4:16). These same ideas are repeated toward 3

the end of the letter: “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful” (10:22-23). The main message of Hebrews is to remain faithful to Jesus and not turn away from him. The author supports this message with arguments that Jesus is greater than the angels and is greater than Moses, Aaron, Joshua, and the priests (3:3; 4:8; 8:6). Jesus is greater than the angels because he is God’s son (1:4-14), yet Jesus is able to represent us as high priest in heaven because he became human and is like us (2:17-18; 4:15). Because he suffered as a human being, Jesus can help us in our need (2:14-18; 5:7-10; 12:3). The well-known chapter on faith in Hebrews 11 serves as a long list of people who are examples or witnesses to what it means to remain faithful under hardship and difficulty. The author says, “we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls” (10:39). The author follows this statement with the examples of those who have faith (11:1-39; also 6:11-12). The goal of the letter is to encourage believers to hold onto their faith and not to drift from it. The words “perfect,” “complete,” and “mature” are common descriptors throughout the letter of what believers are striving to be. Holding onto faith and continuing to believe in Jesus leads to the perfection and maturing of our faith and our relationship with God. We must look to Jesus and consider him as our example as we learn to become children of God (12:1-7, 12-17). The author of Hebrews is never named. Because Timothy is mentioned in Hebrews 13:23, many in the early church, and since, have thought that Paul wrote Hebrews. Others argue that the letter was not written by Paul and suggest that Luke, Barnabas, Apollos, Priscilla, or someone else close to Paul wrote Hebrews. No one knows for sure who wrote the letter to the Hebrews. Even the audience is not clearly known. The book received the name “the Letter to the Hebrews” because it was thought that the citation of many Old Testament texts and the emphasis on Old Testament law and events indicated that the audience was made up of Jewish (or Hebrew) believers in Jesus. 4

Something else worth noting about Hebrews is that, although it is called a letter, it is not written like a letter. The author calls is a “word of exhortation” or a sermon (13:22; cf. Acts 13:15). Hebrews opens in 1:1-4 like a grand introduction to a sermon or speech: “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke…” I encourage you to read Hebrews this summer as we learn together from God’s Word. Learning from the Monarch by Eva Sham

One morning, while waiting for the traffic lights to change, I was captivated and spellbound by a few monarch butterflies dancing high above me in the open space of the quiet intersection. I paused for a few moments to enjoy that rare sight. It was a rare sight because the monarch butterflies are an endangered species. Their young (or caterpillars) feed on milkweed leaves. A variety of wildflowers provide nectar for them as they migrate south to their winter habitat in Mexico and California. But their survival is threatened because of at least three reasons. First, there is a loss of their sources of food due to pesticide use, urbanization, and drought. Second, their winter homes in Mexico and California are being threatened by deforestation and land degradation. Third, extreme weather conditions (or the effects of climate change) kill them. They are dependent on the actions of human beings to protect them from any drastic decrease in population and even extinction. At the same time, we depend on them and other pollinators to enable 7

all plants to flourish and to provide us with food. In other words, human beings and insect pollinators are interdependent on one another while we live together on this planet earth. Even though it is for just a short period of time, the beauty of the monarch butterfly brings us great joy. However, its shortlived splendour (the longest time it can live is less than a year) is but a shadow of the beauty of God’s majesty and holiness. Furthermore, the ultimate purpose for which the monarch butterfly is created is the glory of God. I suggest that the monarch butterfly has a twofold “mission” in glorifying God. Its beauty proclaims the magnificent creative power of its Creator. Second, its work as an insect pollinator demonstrates God’s love and care for all his creatures (humans and non-humans) through creaturely interdependence within the web of life. Thus, in its unique way, the monarch butterfly glorifies God like the mountains and the hills which “burst into song” of praise and the trees which “clap their hands” (Is. 55:12) as they joyfully respond to the Lord of all creation. I am learning from the monarch butterfly to worship our Triune Creator in a way that I am created to glorify him. Anything that is created can become the false object of our worship. Therefore, we must seek God’s help to be faithful in worship within the community of God’s people. The annual flights of groups of monarch butterflies to their winter homes may be viewed as a celebration of their Creator who adorns them with the vibrant colours of orange, black, and white. I am also learning−−as a member of Spring’s Community Garden team−−to participate in what God is doing to care for his entire creation, humans and nonhumans. While you reflect upon the beauty of God’s holiness and his works of creation, providence, and redemption, may you be encouraged to participate in the ways that God is calling you to glorify and serve him. How to read the Bible book by book: a guided tour, by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart For each book of the Bible, the authors start with a quick snapshot, then expand the view to help you better understand its message and how it fits into the grand narrative of the Bible. Written by two top evangelical scholars, this survey is designed to get you actually reading the Bible knowledgeably and understanding it accurately. In an engaging, conversational style, Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart take you through every book of the Bible using their unique approach. Hebrews: an introduction and study guide, by Amy Peeler and Patrick Gray This volume offers a compact introduction to one of the most daunting texts in the New Testament. The Letter to the Hebrews has inspired many readers with its encomium to faith, troubled others with its hard sayings on the impossibility of a second repentance, and perplexed still others with its exegetical assumptions and operations drawn from a cultural matrix that is largely alien to modern sensibilities. Long thought to be Paul, the anonymous author of Hebrews exhibits points of continuity with the apostle and other

New Testament writers in the letter's (or sermon's) vision of life in the light of the crucified Messiah, but one also finds distinctive perspectives in such areas as Christology, eschatology, and atonement. Gray and Peeler survey the salient historical, social, and rhetorical factors to be considered in the interpretation of this document, as well as its theological, liturgical, and cultural legacy. They invite readers to enter the world of one of the boldest Christian thinkers of the first century. Hebrews for everyone, by N.T. Wright Writing in an approachable and anecdotal style, Tom Wright helps us to find our way around the letter to the Hebrews, one of the most challenging writings in the New Testament. He acknowledges that people often find it difficult, because some of the ideas it contains are strange to us. Yet, like meeting a new friend, Wright helps us to find Hebrews full of interest and delight, with a powerful message that comes home to the church of today and tomorrow just as much as it did to the church of yesterday. Our Values We believe in a humble God who came not to be served, but to serve. Therefore we engage in sacrificial and active service to those around us. We strive to be good stewards of God’s gifts and talents by serving one another in humility. We aspire to regard others as higher than ourselves, which liberates us to creatively take risks in serving others for God’s glory. We believe in a God of grace who came to save the world, not to condemn it. Therefore, as we are continuously receiving the gift of God’s grace, we seek to grow in that grace and extend it to others. We strive to define ourselves by what we are for, not what we are against.

We believe in a God who knows us, and who desires to be known. Therefore we embrace a journey of faith that requires us to constantly strive for a personal, intimate and transformative knowledge of God. We strive to be led by God’s Spirit in supporting and encouraging one another in working out our faith.

We believe in a creative God. Therefore we are open to expressing our faith in new and creative ways that reflect the beauty and complexity of our creator. We are called to use our creative gifts in worship and service as we engage with our world. We take joy in the diversity of gifts that allow us to delight God and participate in His ongoing story. We believe in a triune, relational God who calls us to come together as a diverse community of believers. Therefore, we want to walk together, supporting one another physically, emotionally and spiritually. We strive to be a welcoming, inclusive family that goes through the joys and the trials of life together, acknowledging that God uses this community to deepen and mature our faith.

We believe in a God who loves this broken world and wants to reconcile us to Himself. Therefore we are commissioned by Christ to go out into the world, meeting the holistic needs of the local and global community. God calls us to participate in a redemptive work that he has already initiated; in humility, we will partner with others to work alongside and chase after Him.

We believe in a God who is our centre. Therefore where we are on the journey is less important than that we are moving towards a deeper relationship with Christ. We believe and participate in God’s redemptive work in all people, which gives us the freedom to come as we are, and to accept others as they are.

We each are on a unique journey to become who God has created us to be.
