Music is alive but the industry is dying. Current trends in the music industry are making it impossible for bands to survive and a less desirable market for designers to enter. This recession is creating an opportunity to be at the forefront of a major change in the music scene. My goal is to shift the music industry to favor independent musicians and put more control and money back in their hands. I hope to shine some light on the positive changes happening in the industry and develop solutions for some of the existing problems.

There was only 1 deadline in this project: end of semester, week 15. The semester long focus of the class was on a film director and subsequent film festival of our choice. All work must be accomplished at a high degree of polish. Class tested our ability to make lots of design choices and manage time wisely.

I love movies, however I never think about who directs the movies I love. Thus I decided to make a list of the movies I love and find out if there were any correlations, perhaps a director that directed a few of my favorite movies. After making the list and choosing a couple potential directors I eventually chose Terry Gilliam. He has directed many movies I personally own and love. Some examples include, Time Bandits, Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing Las Vegas and Tideland. Finally I called the film festival Distorted Trip because I felt the movies shared in common a main characters who tripped on drugs and or went on a trip.

I am a big fan of shoes. If I didn’t practice self control I would own hundreds of shoes. However, that isn’t what inspired this project. I was inspired by two things. One: I like what people think shoes say about them and two: what people do with their shoes when they no longer want them. For example I see tons of shoes ditched on the side of the road. I decided documenting these shoes would both fulfilling and exciting.

Moving during a semester is complicated. However, the one good thing that did come out of moving... was a way to tell time. If you have ever posted a room on Craigslist, then you know the number of responses you get. If you haven’t let me just say, in San Francisco it’s hundreds. I decided to use these E-mails as a way to tell time. All the elements of e-mail have been incorporated into snail mail. The key on the left of the letters lets readers know: was the messaged received, did I reply and were there any attachments. I also flagged the edge of the mail I liked with a highlighter. This project is fully functioning, you can read the letters of every person that applied, and hopefully get a feel for the amount of time it takes to get a roommate.

For the first book I had a vision of a full color girl in a black and white world. The importance of the color isn’t instantly obvious, however my hope is that eventually you will see the bright happy nature of a girl living in a world where nothing goes her way. On top of that today is a very special day, and nobody seems to notice her. (Until the end!)

My role at Lucasfilm is in the Licensing department. I am the assistant to the art director, which means I work with Troy Alders to aid Licensing, Marketing and PR in the creation of new campaigns and design projects relating to Star Wars, Indiana Jones and other Lucasfilm entertainment properties. Also Licensees rely on us to create new art every year. We work on creating as well as collecting designs from approved Star Wars artist and designers.

Initial Diagnosis:
The Academy of Art University teaches designers how to be commercially viable. Students receive and education designed to prepare them for a job in a real world. The class structure, teachers and assignments are geared towards testing the competence and strength of its design students. AAU is hard, but when you’re done, the work produced shows extreme design growth.

I have spent 10 years studying graphic design. Generally when somebody spends that much time in school they’re studying to be a doctor. I’m not a doctor, I am however a design practitioner. Much the same way doctors have new patients every day with symptoms that need solving. I have new projects every day with solutions that need to be solved.
