Ireland Citizens Approve Same-Sex Marriage

1

Ireland, the small island European nation, voted overwhelmingly to allow same-sex marriage. In a referendum vote last week, Irish citizens voted “Yes” to marriage equality by a 62 percent winning margin. According to the British Broadcasting Company, as of Saturday afternoon, the Yes campaign had collected 1,201,607 votes to 734,300 for the No campaign. The passed referendum

Lambda Legal Presses Texas Governor To Comply With PREA Standards The Department of Justice, reportedly, is awaiting a form from the Texas government stating it will use five percent of federal funding to meet the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards. “We are profoundly disappointed that Governor Abbott has neglected to make a meaningful commitment to meet the PREA standards set by the DOJ,” stated Lambda Legal Staff

Attorney Jael Humphrey, in a news release. Lambda Legal, a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of civil rights for LGBT people and those with HIV, is representing Passion Star, who claims to have suffered rape and sexual abuse while in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Gay Dance Festival Takes Over Disney

Your Smile ile Should ul Leave a Gre Gre reat Impre pres resssio sion!

John McDonald

It is being advertised as the gay dance festival of the year. There are a lot of parties scheduled in Central Florida during the first weeks of summer, but One Magical Weekend intends to be the best. Billy Looper, Executive Director for One Magical Weekend, said the 25th anniversary of gays gathering at Walt Disney World Resorts is a time to pause and reflect. “So the controversy is always with a select few who want to be visible, but it’s getting less and less and Disney and every other corporate sponsor is getting better and better to work with,” Looper said. The controversy stemmed from LGBT people arriving in Orlando en mass and celebrating with an outing to the Magic Kingdom where they identified themselves by wearing red colored clothing. The fact that Disney refused to condemn the event prompted a boycott of the theme parks by the Southern Baptist Convention. As recently as 2013, the Florida Family Association paid for an airplane to fly over Walt Disney World displaying a banner

Indy Mayor to Be Grand Marshal of Indianapolis Pride Parade

(AP) The mayor of Indianapolis who backed the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender community amid the uproar over Indiana's religious objections law has been named grand marshal of a parade celebrating the group. Indy Pride announced last week it selected Mayor Greg Ballard to be the grand marshal of the Indiana Pride Parade on June 13 as part of Circle City Pride Week. Ballard was prominent among Indiana political

leaders in supporting the LGBT community after Gov. Mike Pence signed the religious objections law that many perceived as discriminatory against the group. The General Assembly later passed and Pence signed legislation aimed at clarifying the law. Indy Pride says Ballard is the first sitting mayor to serve as grand marshal of the parade. Ballard says parade is a great opportunity to demonstrate "Hoosier hospitality."

roward Log Cabin Republicans Club Charter Renewed

(SFGN) The Broward Log Cabin Republican Club of Florida had its charter renewed this month by the Republican Party of Florida. In a press release, Jack Majeske, past president of the LCR Broward chapter, said the state party understood Log Cabin members believe in the basic Republican tenants of “fiscal conservatism, a strong military, small government, individual and privacy rights.” “Our place at the table was not simply a dream, but an attainable goal,” Majeske said. Log Cabin Republicans claim to be the nation’s original and largest organization representing gay conservatives and allies who support fairness, freedom and equality for all Americans. The organization’s website, logcabin.org, details efforts to make the Republican Party more inclusive on gay and lesbian issues. Andy Eddy, a founding member of the Broward LCR Club, said the group was first chartered in 1991 by a federation in Tampa. In 1999, the state GOP granted LCR a chapter in a decision sanctioned by then Florida Governor Jeb Bush and state party chairman Al Cardenes. “Many laughed and others still ridicule our involvement,” noted Eddy. In U.S. Congress, Log Cabin Republicans point to multiple allies including senators John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona, Rob Portman of Ohio, congressman Peter King of New York and congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida. Those interested in joining the Broward chapter should contact the Honorable Sandra Steen at (954) 566-4156 or visit www.LCRFL.org In addition to Broward, currently, there are LCR chapters in Miami, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Orlando.

(Submitted) The Greenacres City Council members unanimously voted to enact a civil rights ordinance establishing, as matter of public policy, that the city opposes discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity or expression, genetic information, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, pregnancy, familial status or age. The ordinance was proposed by the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, a local nonprofit organization, which is dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. "The Greenacres City Council made the city a safer and more welcoming place for LGBT people to open businesses, buy homes and simply be ourselves," said Palm Beach County Human Rights Council Board Member Meredith Ockman, who led the organization's effort for the ordinance in Greenacres. "The city's leaders made it clear that everyone is valued for the diversity they bring to Greenacres." Greenacres City Councilwoman Paula Bousquet has been working with the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council on diversity issues for several years. "In this ever-changing political climate, it was important for Greenacres to demonstrate our continuing commitment to our residents and employees by codifying and expanding our laws and policies," said Bousquet. "While the nation is rapidly moving forward on recognizing lesbian and gay relationships, Florida still lacks any statewide laws providing equal protrection to LGBT Floridians," said Rand Hoch, President and Founder of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council. "Therefore, until Congress or the Florida Legislature take action, local LGBT advocacy rights organizations such as PBCHRC must continue to work with county and municipal leaders to protect our community form discrimination."

(AP) A state lawmaker says New York should ensure that veterans discharged for their sexual orientation under the U.S. military's old policies are eligible for the 53 state programs, benefits and tax breaks other vets can get. State Sen. Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) says he'll sponsor legislation to do that for LGBT New Yorkers who are among the estimated 114,000 service members discharged since World War II for their orientation or gender identity. That estimate includes 14,000 who were discharged under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy established in 1993 and repealed in 2011. Hoylman says many of those veterans received an "other than honorable" discharge, costing them benefits. His bill would establish a simple certification within the State Division of Veterans' Affairs for LGBT veterans to clarify their discharge status.

(AP) The young couple that became the face of gay marriage in Utah wed in downtown Salt Lake City on Sunday in front of about 1,000 people. Derek Kitchen and Moudi Sbeity were one of three gay and lesbian couples who were plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Utah that led a federal judge to overturn a same-sex marriage ban in 2013. The U.S. Supreme Court in October declined to hear Utah's appeal in the case, leading to an effective legalization of gay marriage in the state. Kitchen, 26, and Sbeity, 27, told The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/1GxqX4t) that they chose to have a public wedding ceremony because the legal case impacted many in the state's gay community.

The

Big Story

Clifton Wiggins/CNN,

This Week: Ireland Votes "Yes!"

Victory! Ireland Votes Overwhelmingly In Favor of Marriage Equality (CNN) Same-sex couples will soon be able to walk down the aisle in the Emerald Isle. Voters in Ireland overwhelmingly chose to change their nation's constitution Friday, becoming the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage through popular vote. The official results were announced Saturday at a Dublin Castle press conference: 1,201,607 voted in favor of the landmark referendum, while 734,300 voted against it, said Ríona Ní Fhlanghaile, an elections official. Voter turnout in the majority Catholic nation was more than 60 percent, according to Fhlanghaile. Despite speculation in the run-up that opposition to the measure might have been understated because people were too shy to tell pollsters that they planned to vote "no" — the outcome was lopsided, with the measure passing by just over 61 percent of the total vote cast. Once the votes began to be tallied, the result was never in doubt.

H

ow Does Ireland's Vote to Relate to Debate Over Issue in US?

(AP) Ireland's national referendum on same-sex marriage, which was approved by 62 percent of the voters, comes just weeks ahead of an expected ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on whether to legalize gay marriage throughout the United States. A look at some of the parallels and contrasts in the two countries' situations:

Some conservative U.S. leaders say American voters deserve the same chance to decide the issue. Is that feasible?

Not at the national level. All 27 amendments to the U.S. Constitution have been initiated and approved by Congress, then sent to the states for ratification by at least three-fourths of state legislatures. In Ireland, by contrast, the national legislature initiates proposed constitutional amendments, such as the same-sex marriage measure, but they can take effect only if approved by a popular vote.

But haven't there been some popular votes in the U.S. on same-sex marriage?

Yes, at the state level. Through May 2012, voters in 30 states approved amendments to their state constitutions banning gay marriage by limiting recognition only to unions of one man and one woman. In other states where same-sex marriage is legal, that came about through court orders or votes by the legislature.

Approval of gay marriage in Ireland is seen as signaling the declining influence of the Roman Catholic Church, which campaigned for a "No" vote. What's the comparable situation in the U.S.?

The Catholic Church in the U.S. also has campaigned against gay marriage but has suffered several recent setbacks. In Rhode Island, ranked by the Gallup poll as the most heavily Catholic state, the legislature approved gay marriage in 2013 despite opposition from the Catholic hierarchy. And several Catholic governors across the country have led efforts to legalize gay marriage in their states. There has not been an equivalent phenomenon for some other U.S. denominations.

6

// 5.27.2015 // SFGN.com //

Only one of the country's 43 parliamentary constituencies failed to pass it. As is the case in many other countries around the world, the issue is a polarizing one in Ireland, a country that didn't decriminalize homosexuality until the 1990s. This referendum was seen as a test of whether more liberal thinking can trump Ireland's traditionally conservative, Catholic leanings. The "yes" campaign enjoyed considerable support from the country's political establishment. Gerry Adams, leader of the Sinn Fein political party, called it "a huge day for equality," and over the border in Northern Ireland — the only part of the United Kingdom where samesex marriage is still prohibited — Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness hoped they'll take notice. "The world is moving on and Ireland is taking the lead," McGuinness said. "Politicians, particularly in the north need to reflect on this progress."

W

hy Ireland said 'Yes'

(CNN) Considerable surprise has been expressed around the world about the fact that traditionally conservative and Catholic Ireland approved same-sex marriage in a referendum May 22 by a majority of nearly two to one. The fact is, Ireland is no longer a Catholic country in the old sense. Much of the state's urban population is what we call here "cultural Catholics" — that is, they like to have baptisms and funerals in the local Catholic church, but are no longer regular mass-goers. And the true believers who still make up a sizable portion of the population no longer feel obliged to obey the edicts of the bishops, who last Sunday opposed the "yes" vote from the pulpits. The reasons can be found in the universal disgust at the revelations in the past two decades of widespread clerical sexual abuse of children and the cover-up by bishops, as well as the mistreatment of unmarried mothers in religious institutions. Also, in recent years Ireland has enjoyed unprecedented prosperity, which has helped make the population more middleclass and secular. Half a century ago, Irish political leaders feared the "belt of the crozier" if they promoted legislation contrary to Catholic Church teachings. It is a measure of how far they have become detached from the institutional church that every single party leader, including Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Enda Kenny and Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams supported a "yes" vote in the referendum. Homosexual acts were decriminalized in Ireland in the last quarter of a century, and since then, gays and lesbians have become open and accepted. Rainbow contingents are a regular, joyful feature of the St. Patrick's Day parades in cities and towns. Helped with generous funding from the Atlantic Philanthropies, organizations promoting gay and lesbian rights such as Amnesty International-Ireland have prepared the ground for what even Dublin Catholic Archbishop Diarmuid Martin called a "social revolution."

Popular sports stars and celebrities have lately written books about coping with being gay. A primetime television sit-com set in working class Dublin, "Mrs. Brown's Boys," rejoices in a gay family member. Minister of Health Leo Varadkar, 36, revealed he is gay earlier this year. No one blinked. The former president, Mary McAleese, disclosed she has a gay son and urged a "yes" vote. This was a severe blow to the "no" vote campaign, as McAleese is highly respected and a devout Catholic. Led by the Iona Institute, a conservative Catholic pressure group, the opposition could not gain much traction with its argument that a "yes" vote would mean a future of male married couples bringing up surrogate children who would never know their biological mother. During the referendum campaign, many "yes" voters said they wanted to show support for gays in their circle of relatives and friends. They knew that in days gone by theirs was a lonely and unhappy existence. My best friend at school in the 1960s was gay. I didn't know this until we were both mature adults. He died in middle age; the pressure of living in a hostile climate literally killed him. A leading TV political correspondent, Ursula Halligan, "came out" last week with a devastating account of how her personal life was ruined by being forced into the closet. Such events created a national urge to end the unfairness towards gays and lesbians. The sense that a "no" vote would perpetuate a denial of rights enjoyed by heterosexuals ignited a fire under Ireland's young people. Not only did they turn out to vote in unprecedented numbers, but thousands working abroad came home to vote "yes" from as far away as Canada, the United States and Australia. As the Irish Times's Una Mullally, a leading "yes" campaigner, put it, "A lot of straight Irish people just wanted to be given the opportunity to show that they were not prejudiced, that they had no issue with people who were gay having their relationships recognized, that they wanted to live in a country where all citizens are valued equally." It became a cause. Ireland has today a strong sense that, at long last, it has consigned to history a dark past — a past, which produced cruel institutions for unmarried mothers, like the convent featured in the movie "Philomena"; which allowed a powerful church to cover up clerical crimes, and which stigmatized those who yearned for the love that dared not speak its name.

utin Signs Russian Law to Shut 'Undesirable' Organizations

Shutterstock/CNNMoney.

(AP) President Vladimir Putin signed a bill into law Saturday giving prosecutors the power to declare foreign and international organizations "undesirable" in Russia and shut them down. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have condemned the measure as part of an "ongoing draconian crackdown which is squeezing the life out of civil society." The law is part of a Kremlin campaign to stifle dissent that intensified after Putin

began his third term in 2012. His return to the presidency had been accompanied by mass street protests that Putin accused the United States of fomenting. Russian suspicions of Western intentions have been further heightened because of tensions over Russia's role in the conflict in Ukraine. The new Russian law allows prosecutors to declare an organization undesirable if it presents a threat to Russia's constitutional order, its defenses or its security.

(AP) The state of Indiana had to pay more than $1.4 million in fees to plaintiffs' attorneys in its unsuccessful attempt to maintain a ban on same-sex marriages, the attorney general's office says. Same-sex marriage became legal in Indiana in October when the U.S. Supreme Court decided to let stand two federal court rulings that said the state's ban and refusal to recognize such marriages performed elsewhere was unconstitutional. That resolved the five lawsuits in favor of the plaintiffs, leaving the state of Indiana to foot the bill for

their legal costs. The most costly case at $650,000 involved Amy Sandler and Niki Quasney, a Munster couple who fought to have their marriage recognized as Quasney was dying of cancer, The Indianapolis Star reported (http://indy. st/1AtId9O). That became the lead case in Indiana on same-sex marriage. Quasney died at age 38 in February after the couple won in court. In addition, the attorney general's office said it spent about $7,000 on printing, filing fees and other related costs in the lead case.

(AP) The Gay and Lesbian Community Center is offering free sex education classes to high school students as an alternative to the Clark County School District's abstinence-based sex ed. The Las Vegas Sun reports many current and former students from the school district have criticized the district's sex ed policies in recent months. They say teachers skim over important topics and refuse to answer questions.

The LGBT center offers classes for students from ages 13 to 18 with parental permission. One of the teachers, Dr. Guy Cooper, says he wants students to feel like they are talking to a friend. He says the classes are meant to protect and inform children. The Clark County School District is currently in the process of re-examining its sex ed curriculum.

eet the First GOP Lawmaker in Texas to Back Gay Marriage

S

weden Wins Eurovision Song Contest While Russia is Booed

Photo: Facebook. Photo: Wiki User Niagara.

(EDGE) As an anti-gay marriage letter circulated around the Texas House Republican caucus garnering signatures quicker than you can say "homophobia," one GOP lawmaker is breaking ranks with the party and has become the first Republican lawmaker in the state to publicly support same-sex marriage. "I just don't agree with the sentiment of the letter," said Rep Sarah Davis to the Texas Observer. "I don't feel the need to pass legislation or vote for legislation that prohibits two adults who love each other to be able to be joined in a civil union or marriage. It does not affect my marriage." Davis was one of five out of 98 Republicans in the Texas House not to sign the letter, which was drafted after an anti-gay marriage bill died before reaching the floor. With endorsements from Log Cabin Republicans and Equality Texas, Davis, who is also a maverick with the party on reproductive rights, Davis is far from hiding

her progressive opinions. "This is not breaking news, and if someone chooses to run against me in the primary and wants to make abortion or gay marriage an issue, then we'll face that," Davis told the Observer. "I've had contested primaries in the past, and those issues have come up, and my margin of victory actually increases every election." Finding a Republican with anti-gay views to challenge Davis over gay rights wouldn't be too difficult. In 2014, the Texas GOP approved plank language in their platform that endorsed "reparative therapy" for gays. "We recognize the legitimacy and efficacy of counseling, which offers reparative therapy and treatment for those patients seeking healing and wholeness from their homosexual lifestyle," the platform reads. "No laws or executive orders shall be imposed to limit or restrict access to this type of therapy."

(AP) VIENNA -- Sweden beat Russia to win the 60th Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday, in an event described by organizers as beyond politics but marred by boos for the Russian that were apparently prompted by the Ukraine conflict and the Kremlin's anti-gay policies. The race between Russian star Polina Gagarina and Sweden's Mans Zelmerlow went back and forth for most of the balloting as jurors from 40 countries voted along a worldwide audience submitting their preference by phone and app. Zelmerlow finally triumphed with 365 points, with Gagarina receiving 303. In his pop number "Heroes," the Swede chose to forego the usual elaborate stage effects, relying instead on his strong singing and an innovative backdrop. Cheers greeted his win. But the crowd's reaction to Gagarina struck a jarring note for those who believed in the contest's slogan, "Building Bridges." With many Russians critical of last year's winner, the bearded cross-dressing Austrian

soflagaynews //

diva Conchita Wurst, some of the negative reaction may also have been directed at Russia's generally repressive official climate against homosexuality. Wurst rejected the boos, calling them "incomprehensible," and noted that Gagarina "cannot be blamed for the rules" in her home country. About 200 million people watched on TV on Saturday as the 27 finalists, the most ever, battled it out musically. Approximately 10,000 people followed the contest live in Vienna's mammoth Stadthalle, with 25,000 others crowding the main public viewing venue in front of Vienna's City Hall. Beyond Abba, other Eurovision winners who went on to pop fame are Celine Dion and Johnny Logan, who triumphed three times as a performer and songwriter. The hosts of Saturday's spectacle announced that the event had been officially inducted into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-running annual TV music competition.

news election 2016 White House Watch:

Scott Walker

John McDonald

Wisconsin’s Scott Kevin Walker busts his way into SFGN’s White House Watch this week. The Wisconsin Governor is a leading contender for the Republican Party’s U.S. Presidential nomination. Walker, 47, is reportedly connected to the 527 organization, “Our American Revival,” which lists a Middletown, Wisconsin mailing address. On its website, the group declares it will “work with citizens and leaders across the country to promote policies that restore power to the states and their people.” A Walker bid in the crowded GOP field does produce hope in some sections of the party. The Wall Street Journal’s Daniel Henninger writes, “People say they ‘like’ Scott Walker for what he did in Wisconsin. Agreed. Let’s see how he handles himself over 10 rounds with three other Republicans before climbing into the ring with Mrs. Clinton.” Walker entered the national spotlight due to a highly contentious election and subsequent recall effort, a movement he managed to stave off. During his campaign, Walker was often at odds with organized labor.

American Revival states it will help put power back in the hands of the taxpayers by taking on big government union bosses through collective bargaining and pension reforms. On LGBT issues, Walker has a voting record that is not friendly to gay and lesbian couples. He voted for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in Wisconsin, defended the ban and supports a federal amendment to allow states to define marriage. But last month Walker disclosed to reporters he had attended a gay wedding reception of a relative.

Anne Susan DePrizio, a nondenominational minister in Alabama was sentenced to 30 days in jail last month for her stance on same sex marriage. After a federal court ruled that Alabama's same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional, DiPrizio conducted a marriage for two women at a probate judge's office in Prattville, Ala., in February. (In Alabama, probate judges are responsible for issuing marriage licenses.) A local judge ordered her to stop, but she defied him and obeyed the federal ruling, returning to the probate judge's office after she posted bail from her disorderly conduct arrest. Her punishment for refusing to vacate the office: thirty days in jail, sixth months probation, and a $250 fine according to The Advocate. bit.ly/1HH2ngi.

President: It's Time To Lift Ban on Adults BoyGayScouts

(CNN) -- Robert Gates, the president of the Boy Scouts of America, called for the organization to end its ban on gay adults in remarks (PD) at the organization's national business meeting Thursday. Citing "the social, political and judicial changes taking place in our country" regarding laws and sexual orientation, Gates said that "the status quo in our movement's membership standards cannot be sustained." He added, "Our oath calls upon us to do our duty to God and our country. The country is changing, and we are increasingly at odds with the legal landscape at both the state and federal levels. And, as a movement, we find ourselves with a policy more than a few of our church sponsors reject, thus placing Scouting between a boy and his church."

regon’s Bi Governor Signs Ban against Conversion Therapy

Gov. Kate Brown signed the bill into law on Monday, making Oregon the third state to ban conversion therapy on LGBT youth as reported by the Huffington Post. http://huff. to/1AwgZiS The new law prohibits mental health professionals and social workers from performing therapy that tries to change the sexual orientation of children. The practice has been condemned by the American Psychological Association because it can lead to anxiety, depression, substance abuse and suicide among young LGBT people. Earlier this month, Oregon's state Senate voted 21-to-8 to pass the bill. The Oregon House passed the bill in March. Oregon joins California, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., which already have similar laws. President Barack Obama condemned gay conversion therapy in April, addressing a WhiteHouse.gov petition that called for a ban after Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teen, committed suicide. Alcorn, who identified as female, had posted online that religious therapists tried to tell her she was a boy.

Pride Fort Lauderdale to Honor LGBT Judges Jacari Lamar

Photo: J.R. Davis.

The previous Pride Honors, which honored Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Dean Trantalis.

Pride Fort Lauderdale will be hosting its second Pride Honors event of the year on June 1. The prestigious Pride Honors awards is a series of events presented several times throughout the year recognizing individuals who have put work into serving and furthering the causes of the LGBT community and its allies. The event will take place at The Pride Center at Equality Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., presented by Dignity Memorial, and will honor both Judge Lisa Porter and Judge Robert Lee. These judges are not only accomplished in their careers, but they are avid supporters of the LGBT community. Additionally they are both out members of the LGBT community. Also of note, they were one of the first judges to marry gay and lesbian couples the day it became legal in Florida. "I am grateful that my service as a judge is appreciated and I have been able to serve," Judge Porter said. "I am humbled to be chosen for this award." When asked how did it feel to have the honor of marrying the first gay couples in South Florida, Judge Porter said "the energy in the room was palpable. So many couples waited so long [for] a right that had been denied to them for so long. I was proud to be a part of this moment in history." Judge Robert Lee shared similar sentiments. "Honestly, it was more emotional than I thought it would be — I had a sudden moment when I couldn't believe that I was actually presiding over a wedding

of a same-sex couple right in the courthouse. A few tears were shed, including my own." In regards to the Pride Honors Awards, Judge Lee is "hopeful that it inspires others to become involved and stay involved on some level. Continue and don't become complacent — there's always something you can do." In short, the Pride Honors event simply “honors those who have helped out the LGBT community,” said Norm Kent, Chair of Pride Fort Lauderdale. “We chose Judge Lisa Porter and Judge Robert Lee because they’re distinguished and have made an impact in the community.” Earlier this year, Pride South Florida changed its corporate name from Pride One of Broward County to Greater Fort Lauderdale Pride, operating under the Pride Fort Lauderdale name. According to its by-laws, the purpose of Pride South Florida is to offer cultural and educational programs and activities, which enhance mental and physical health, provide social support, and foster awareness of the past and present contributions of our community as a whole. At the Pride Honors event, Pride Fort Lauderdale will announce more information regarding the main Fort Lauderdale Pride, which will be a two-day festival at Holiday Park slated for October 10 and 11. These dates are the third for the organization this year. They moved their annual March PrideFest to June and then cancelled that event so as to not conflict with this year’s Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride taking place June 20.

The Pride Honors Event is free of cost and includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. 12

ARROW LBT Board Embraces New Leadership Nicole Wiesenthal

Submitted photos.

On May 2, ARROW (Area Resource and Referral Organization for Women) welcomed new officers to its board, and with the new officers came new goals, ideas and events. The new members are focused on improving support for women and doing more outreach, said Yvonne Rohrbacher, the new vice president. One of the ways they hoped to reach their goals was through a casino night they hosted Saturday. In addition to the recent fundraiser, ARROW will host a lesbian health information session at the Stonewall Wilton Manors on June 20, Rohrbacher said. The new officers are President Cindy Brown of Miami; Treasurer Gerry Dinkin of Palm Beach County; and Vice President/Secretary Yvonne Rohrbacher of Fort Lauderdale. “Our new goals are to focus harder on the mentoring and support of newly diagnosed lesbian, bisexual and transgender women in the community with any type of cancer,” Rohrbacher said. She said the new board is focusing on “any opportunity to do additional outreach of any kind.” 1 4/9/2015 1:03:28 PM ARROWSFGN_Florida_House3.pdf is partnering more heavily with SunServe and the Pride Center, Rohrbacher said. They’re also

working with the Aqua Foundation in Miami and Compass in West Palm Beach. “We have board members involved in those organizations so we’re really excited to partner with them to see what their members need in terms of women’s health,” she said. While the previous officers focused on multiple programs at once, the new officers plan on investing more into the “Rainbow Survivor Network” which is a group of trained LBT cancer survivors who offer help and support to newly diagnosed cancer patients and survivors, according to the press release. One of greater programs ARROW created last year was the Buddy Bag program, Rohrbacher said. The Buddy Bags are cancer care kits, which are offered to newly diagnosed cancer patients that include supplies and comfort items which help the women during treatment. You wouldn’t be able to tell that Connie Cave, 51, had been diagnosed with cancer, not once, but seven times. She looked the picture of health. When she found out the doctors had detected lung cancer a seventh time, Jan. 27, the women from ARROW acted like earthly angels, calling her, checking up on her and providing constant support.

“A lady from ARROW had called to see if I was sick,” she said. “She brought me a Buddy Bag, said they’re there for me if I ever need their help or support, and it was overwhelming.” She said she really enjoyed the Buddy Bag, especially a purple cup with a lid and straw which was included because she drinks a lot of water. “I feel like you can’t have enough love and support,” she said. “To know that I have that type of support is extremely humbling and welcoming.”

Beswick Takes The Reins At World AIDS Museum John McDonald

Hugh G. Beswick.

The World AIDS Museum and Educational Center has hired Hugh G. Beswick its Chief Executive Officer according to a press release from the entity. “Hugh brings years of management, human resources Leadership, investment strategy and fundraising expertise to the museum at this very important time,” said WAM Board President Jason King. Beswick’s hiring marks the first official designation for the WAM. Beswick, along with founder Steve Stagen and Operations Manager Edward Sparan were integral parts of the installation process for the Museum’s new home in Wilton Manors. Located at 1201 NE 26 Street, Suite 111, the museum grew out of an idea by the Fort Lauderdale based group of HIV positive individuals who call themselves “Pozitive Attitudes.” Beswick spoke to SFGN last year for a profile in our Spirit issue. Hugh Beswick is on a mission. Given a second chance after having his life shattered by AIDS, Beswick is focused on opening the World AIDS Museum in Wilton Manors. He currently serves as the museum’s chairman of the board and is busy planning for next year’s grand opening. “Part of the story with this museum is showing why this can’t happen again,” said Beswick, citing statistics showing 25 million people worldwide have died from the disease since it was first recorded in the early 1980s. Diagnosed with AIDS in 2003, Beswick was near death, wheelchair bound and sick for years. He has since made a dramatic recovery and lives a healthy lifestyle in South Florida. The 61-year-old Pittsburgh native said his brush with death moved him to educate the masses about HIV/AIDS. The museum, scheduled to open in late February inside Wilton Station, is the perfect vehicle to fight stigma. “I am very fortunate to have survived,” Beswick said. “I certainly have a new outlook on life and I’m going to do something with it.”

Howard Andrew Builds a Fabscout Family Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

For the past sixteen years, the 'Grabby Awards' have been hosted in Chicago, honoring achievements in adult male pornography. As the industry has become more sophisticated and modernized, so too has the awards ceremony, this year hosted last weekend in Boystown at the Metro Nightclub on Clark Street. The talented and entertaining master of ceremonies was the engaging and humorous Chi Chi La Rue, who kept the program fast -paced and celebratory. It’s an unusual ceremony. Instead of floral arrangements on the center of the dinner tables, there are free bottles of Swiss Navy Lube, one of the event sponsors. The getaway gift bag included the hot new film, “Gay of Thrones,” - or throbs, I forget which. Look, no matter what you choose to do in life, no matter your station or purpose, you should do it with pride, professionalism, and passion. That's why it is a pleasure to share with you today that one of my good friends, Howard Andrew, the president of FabScout Entertainment, was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grabby's. He is now on their 'Wall of Fame.' Sure, maybe the wall is sticky, but Howard deserves to be there. The Fort Lauderdale-based businessman has the primary task of booking hundreds of male models from all over the country for photographic shoots, adult porn films, and guest appearances at nightclubs you love to attend. It’s not easy work. As you might reasonably guess, many of his clients, young adult male entertainers, can be occasionally impulsive and even sometimes irresponsible. Ya think? Managing their careers can be challenging on most days. At any given moment, he has a cast of characters appearing at multiple venues in different cities at the same time. Ironically, on the very evening that Howard should have been celebrating his

18

// 5.27.2015 // SFGN.com //

Grabby Award, he was tending to the texts of a disgruntled nightclub owner complaining that one of his talents had missed a set. In life and business, when you are a professional, you learn how to deal and manage with calamity and crisis calmly. There is always going to be chaos. You have to find the harmony within the cacophony. Howard somehow does. How he does it is sometimes remarkable. 'If Athens shall appear great to you, consider that its glories were won simply everyday by good men doing their duties well.' I can use that quote here, because Howard works in a field populated by many a Greek Adonis. They were out in force last weekend in Chi-town, where you could find parties and porn, pot and the Stanley Cup playoffs. Still, it is a business, and a multi-million dollar one at that. More and more studios are investing mega-money into a better photographic product, on the Internet and with quality videos featuring better looking entertainers. Howard is the kind of guy who will locate a performer in an instant for a desperate producer in dire need of an emergency fillin, while finding the time simultaneously to help out a young client whose boyfriend just abandoned him. Meanwhile, Howard is also the guy who throws Thanksgiving dinners for dozens of friends who are out of town on a family holiday, while making sure that an abandoned dog who was hit by a speeding car is brought to a vet and then given a loving home. Most of all, he is a man who still takes his mom and dad out for breakfasts and dinners weekly. These are the things that matter in life. In our own way, we all deal with drama in our lives. Howard has to deal with the drama in everyone else's lives. Still, in an industry known for its ups and downs, he has provided continuity, longevity, and balance for over a decade. He won an award soflagaynews //

on the Grabby's Wall of Fame because he has won a special spot in the hearts and minds of hundreds of young men that he has helped find work and bookings, jobs and income. Howard assists them personally and supports them collectively. More importantly, he has made FabScout into a family, a group of young male entertainers who come from all over the country to enter into an industry which has in the past been populated by pervs and pimps, but now has grown up. Howard offers solid management and good common sense, along with a lot of group dinners at Lester's on his dime. FabScout routinely donates products to non profits and pride festivals, and advocates regular safe sexual activity and regular HIV testing for its performers. They are paid on time, and never exploited individually, just employed responsibly. Once again, Chicago proved to be a magical city, with great restaurants, a wealth of sporting events and a candy and confectionary convention just down the street from a cannabis conference. I gave a speech high on Hershey's bars. I think. I can't remember. What I will remember from this weekend is that a good guy won a nice award from the industry he has devoted his life to. If you get a moment and see Howard out, pat him on the back or visit his Facebook page. Finally, a special note of congratulations as well to South Florida's own John 'Gio' Spano, who also won a Grabby this past weekend for 'Outstanding Photography.' Gio has been featured previously in an SFGN cover story, and his work is extraordinary. Way to go, Gio! The Grabby's prove that you can have pride and professionalism, along with play and profit, in porn. Now I am going to set up my own site, menover60.com. See you later.

Second Chances Could we have saved Leelah Alcorn?

Rebecca Juro

rjuroshow@gmail.com

I recently learned something that made me stop and think. It seems that Leelah Alcorn may have called TransLifeline or another trans suicide hotline, and spoke to an operator for about two hours. A month later, Leelah stepped in front of a semi and ended her life. Until now, I’d believed that we couldn’t save Leelah because we couldn’t reach her — that the adult trans community hadn’t done enough to make sure Leelah and others like her knew that there are other options. Leelah did apparently know about TransLifeline or another trans-inclusive suicide hotline, though, and she’d taken the step of calling. Yet, that didn’t stop Leelah from taking her own life. It’s humbling to realize that you can’t save everyone, even when you can find them. We’ll never know what was said on that phone call. We’ll never know exactly when Leelah called or who she spoke to. Nor should we. That’s how these things work. That’s why they work. I’ve been an operator for TransLifeline for several weeks now. I’ve spoken with a variety of trans people calling for many different reasons. In all that time, I haven’t yet ever taken a call from someone who I felt was in imminent danger of harming themselves, but I believe, I hope, that I’m prepared for when and if that happens. Maybe that’s why I can’t help thinking about what I’d have said to Leelah Alcorn if I’d been the hotline operator who took her call. I’d have told Leelah that despite the tired cliché it’s become to say so, it really does get better. I’d have told her that while I can’t say I know what she went through with her fundamentalist parents, I absolutely do know what it is to be a closeted teenage trans girl and to be miserable because of it. I’d have told Leelah that in just a few short years the world would open to her as an adult and she’d be able to live her life as she chose. I’d have told her that there was a community waiting to welcome her with open arms, that no matter what her home life was like there

was a place for her among us where no one would question or denigrate who she was or what she wanted out of life. I’d have told her that making it to that day required a personal commitment from her to stay strong and keep making it through each day until she was able to seek her truth, but she didn’t have to do it alone, that there was always someone who gets it to talk to, just a phone call away. I’d have told Leelah that if there’s anything being a trans woman teaches you, it’s that you’re actually far stronger than you ever believed you could be. You have to be, just to even contemplate living this life. I’d have told her that that same strength which would have enabled her to endure everything transition entails, physically, socially, and emotionally, would also carry her through until she was able to pursue her dreams. Would it have made a difference? We’ll never know. It’s possible that nothing anyone could have said to Leelah Alcorn could have prevented the events of that tragic night. What we do know is that there are more Leelahs out there and we know that at least some of them will reach out. We need to be ready when they do. TransLifeline gets most of its operating funds from personal donations of $100 or less. All of the operators are trans-identified volunteers. It’s as lean and as responsiblyrun an organization as I know of. When you donate money to this organization, you know it’s going to directly help those most in need. Here’s the number: 877-565-8860. If you’re a trans person in crisis, that’s the number to call. We’re here for you. If you’d like to help us save some lives, please donate what you can, your time, your money, and your attention. The TransLifeline website has more information and can be found at TransLifeLine.org. As a community, we need to make suicide prevention one of the priorities of our activism and funding efforts. Lives are on the line here, and it’s up to us, all of us, to do something about it.

Don’t Assume Knox’s Suicide Had Anything to Do With Porn

A day you can’t miss....

y a G n I y A Da a d i r o l F h Sou t sfgn.com/daygay2014

sfgn.com/daygay2014

Photo Credit: Twitter When word of Rylan Knox’s death spread through the porn community and into news outlets last month, much was made about his ‘apparent suicide’ by hanging himself. Details leading to why Rylan took his life were being investigated, and four weeks later I still don’t know what those reasons were, or if he even left behind a suicide letter. But based on the information presented at the time the article in SFGN was published, I find Facebook commentator David Elijah’s statement that ‘we need to question why [suicide] happens so often in that business’ to be a dangerous assumption. I didn’t know Rylan, I’ve never seen his work. But in the 16 years that I have been actively performing in adult films, I can recall only 2 suicides on the gay side of the business. There may be more than that, but just to see if Elijah’s belief held any validity I did some snooping of my own. The website link DanielRJennings. org/TheAverageLifeExpectancyOfAPornStar. html charts the deaths of 129 porn stars during the twenty year period between 1990 and 2010. Of those 129 deaths across both the gay

and straight side of the business, I counted 20 were due to suicide. Of those 20 deaths, how many were directly the result of that performer taking his or her life by being in the porn industry is unknown. But David Elijah seems to infer that the XXX business that I’m a part of often leads to suicide. That’s a slippery judgment to make without having the facts and stats to back it up. Perhaps Rylan was distraught over a relationship, had a health issue, or lost a job or a loved one. I don’t really know, and it’s not really my business to know what led to him to take his life. I do know that Rylan Knox was a human being — just like the thousands of other nonporn-performing complex human beings who have taken their lives before him. There are hundreds of reasons why each of these individuals took his or her life. If one of those people has happened to have performed in an adult film, don’t just assume it’s the business that triggered the tragedy. — Sean Storm

Philly Celebrates its Gay Past The ‘City of Brotherly Love’ commemorates 50 years of activism

Christiana Lilly

O

n July 4, 1965, 40 LGBT activists from New York City, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia gathered in front of Independence Hall for what would become the largest demonstration for gay and lesbian equality for its time. Carrying pickets reading such as “Homosexuals Ask For: Equality Before the Law” circled chanting and would repeat this for the next four years.

This was just a few years before the Stonewall Riots in 1969, really kicking off the gay rights movement in the United States. “The city sort of has a culture of wanting to be the first to do things. If you look at our history, there were lots of firsts here,” said Bruce Yelk, the director of public relations at Visit Philadelphia. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of those demonstrations, or “The Reminder,” as locals call it, the people of Philly are coming together in a big way. While it’s been remembered year after year, for the big golden year, museums are putting on special exhibits, the Gayborhood has planned block parties, historical landmarks are hosting events, and most importantly, a reenactment of the demonstration is planned. “It shows how the city and its citizens appreciate and celebrate its LGBT community similarly to other communities among the city’s population,” said Mark Segal, the publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News, one of the oldest LGBT news outlets in the U.S. Philadelphia, literally “city of brotherly love” in Greek, has long been known as a progressive place to live. In 2014, Philadelphia was one of 38 cities in the entire country to be given a perfect score on the Human Rights Council’s municipal equality index. The HRC judges cities by their LGBT laws, activism, relationship with the LGBT community, and other factors. On the big day, the city has asked Marine Staff Sergeant Eric Fidelis Alva to lead the Pledge of Allegiance before a crowd of

First soldier wounded in Iraq

Meet Staff Sgt. Eric Alva It was March 21, 2002, and the landmine Staff Sgt. Eric Alva stepped on didn’t care if he was gay, straight, black, white or Hispanic. It went off. It was the first day of the American ground invasion in Iraq, and Alva became the first member of the American Armed Services to be injured in the war. “I remember the smoke, I remember my face being hit with this force of wind and dirt and smoke. It knocked me back… my hearing was gone. I had this enormous ringing in both ears,” he remembered. “The pain alone is indescribable.” About 10 minutes later, another landmine went off, and his fellow Marines were jumping on the HumVee, trying to avoid being in the sand. Alva described the sand like “a sea of sharks.” He thought he was going to die. He was hospitalized in Germany, and doctors amputated his right leg above the knee, his left leg was broken, and his right arm had severe nerve damage. But perhaps even more painful was he would have to call his mother, who he promised before he left for Iraq that he wouldn’t get hurt. “Sure enough I got hurt and the first time I got to talk to [my parents] I actually said, soflagaynews //

‘Mom, I’m sorry, I broke my promise, I got hurt,’” he said. When Alva recovered, he became a media sensation. News outlets everywhere wanted to talk to the American hero from San Antonio who lost his limb for our country (ever humble, he doesn’t consider himself a hero, “I walked in the wrong place.”). Although he was out to his family, he was still in the closet and he wondered if everyone would still applaud him if they knew he was gay. “Here I am shaking people’s hands, even Gov. Rick Perry at a breakfast, but would he have shaken my hand or thanked me beforehand if he knew, oh, he’s a gay Marine? I would say no,” Alva said. In 2004, after 13 years of service, he had a medical retirement from the Marine Corps. Although his mother was afraid more harm would come to him if he came out publically, Alva gathered the courage to do it, coming out on “Good Morning America” in 2007 with the help of the Human Rights Council. Thankfully, he said the reaction was largely supportive. “It was something I had to do, it was something I had to tell the American people since everybody was paying me such homage,” he remembered. “They think we’re

some pariah or some lepers with diseases or something. We’re not, we’re just people who served our country or anyone else who is in the Armed Forces.” Alva said he did get some hate mail, including an email where someone told him, “Too bad you didn’t get your head blown off and died in Iraq, you faggot.” The former Marine became an activist, working to overturn Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and even testified before a subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee about the law. While attending conferences and workshops around the country, he met Danny Ingram, a former Army soldier and national president of Veterans for Equal Rights. Alva respected him, but had no idea he was gay until 2013 when they had a long conversation and hit it off. A southern gentleman from Georgia, Ingram asked Alva before leaving, “with your permission, may I have a kiss?” On July 4, Alva will lead the crowd at Independence Mall through the Pledge of Allegiance, something he’s honored, excited, and nervous to do. “That’s what I was fighting for, the freedom, and liberty, of happiness, and pursuit of happiness -- for people to be free,” he said.

thousands at Independence Mall. Alva was the first American member of the Armed Forces seriously injured in the Iraq War on March 21, 2003 and is also openly gay. “I’m excited to stand in front of a bunch of people who recognize me for who I am and even our allies, but standing in front of a group of people who I can lead in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and really mean what it says —

with liberty and justice for all,” he said. “America the Beautiful” will then be sung by gay men’s choruses from New York, Washington DC and Philadelphia — commemorative of the three cities that came together 50 years ago. “The city in general surprises people,” Yelk said. “I hope [visitors] take away a greater appreciation for how beautiful, vibrant, and wonderful Philadelphia is.”

2016 Honda HR-V Steve Siler

The Pocket Gay of SUVs

Back in the ‘90s, SUVs started getting smaller and became less truck-y, more car-y—think Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape—and we car types came up with a new term for them: “cute utes.” Since then, the aforementioned trucklets experienced some, uh, middle-age spread, leaving room for a new breed of cute utes to emerge—let’s call them “pocket utes”—and these include the Nissan Juke, the just-released Jeep Renegade, and this car: the 2016 Honda HR-V. Pocket-utes remain relatively undiscovered at the moment, but the HR-V will change all that, not only because pretty much every model Honda makes becomes an instant best-seller on account of their reputation for staying together longer than a lesbian marriage, but also because great small cars are Honda’s core competency. So will this new Honda deserve instant best-seller status, if that indeed is what it achieves? Actually, yes. While it’s certainly small, inside and out, the HR-V gives you that high seating position that crossover buyers love, and also slots right into tiny parking spots once reserved for unsexy hatchbacks. The interior fit and finish is worlds better than the Honda Fit hatchback with which the car shares much of its mechanical bits, and a surprising amount of stuff fits inside, thanks to its exceedingly flexible interior. Indeed, if the HR-V had a Grindr profile, it would definitely be “Vers.” What’s more, like some pocket gays I know, the HR-V is quite fun to play with despite not having much muscle. And also like one or

two of my bantam-weight friends (but not all of ‘em), the HR-V is eminently frugal; after all, one of the chief reasons people downsize to cute utes and pocket utes is for their high fuel economy, and the HR-V is very well-endowed in that department. Even better, the steering is lively and body motions are tidy; in cars as with people, being small often means being nimble. The HR-V is on sale now, with prices starting at just under $20K rising into the mid-$26K range for a loaded model. And as a Honda, being low-maintenance is a given. Which is more than I can say for my friends, regardless of stature.

1991: Gay Days is not sponsored by Disney, in fact, they emphatically refuse to acknowledge the gathering actually happens on their grounds. This is even though it has ballooned from a one day celebration of friends sporting red T-shirts in 1991, into almost two weeks of events and borderline wholesome fun, attracting gays from all over the country and world, who turn the park into a red sea of bopping humanity. The pretense on the part of Disney that thousands and thousands of gays gather on their grounds just by chance every June is hilarious. Their denial has more to do with preserving their supposed "family image" and the fact that they continue to be the target of mass protests, veiled threats, pseudo boycotts, and implied violence, spearheaded by the religious right and the “Crazy Christers” among its hardcore followers. While the Magic Kingdom does not openly promote or discourage the event, many inside, starting with Prime Minister Mickey, dread its arrival every year. It’s a political land mine and Disney does their best to walk it very carefully. It’s not the first time that they have incurred the wrath of the far right. Known for philanthropy in many areas, this corporate giant has a refreshing closeted liberal slant. It has contributed and supported Planned Parenthood through grants and gift matching programs. Their own productions, through ABC, include television shows that feature openly gay and lesbian couples in "Grey's Anatomy" and "Modern Family” as well as sexually charged shows like "Cougar Town,” "The Bachelor/Bachelor Pad,” and "Desperate Housewives.” The Christian Action Network has an ongoing boycott of all Disney products -- with no impact on Disney's earnings or mass appeal. Their official declaration states that they are "shocked and outraged" that Disney has transformed this traditionally macho and Christian establishment, where men dance about in tights and make up, where cartoon animals speak and practice magic, into an anti-family values den of iniquity and debauchery like “Sodom and Gomorrah.” And as in the biblical science fiction story of Sodom and Gomorrah this immoral behavior will result in complete obliteration. The American Family Association sends undercover photographers to every gathering trying to record sexual misconduct.

SouthFloridaGayNews

In 2011,

The Florida American Family Association raised money and rented airplanes with banners to "warn families about Gay Day at Disney". The planes were flown for two days, ten hours each.

1998: Pat Robertson said on June 10, 1998, that Orlando should beware of Hurricanes, since it, and Disney World, allow Gay Days to be held there "I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you,'' Robertson said on his TV show, The 700 Club. In the months following the statement, Orlando was spared, but hurricanes Charley and Frances made landfall in Texas, dumping heavy rains, killing more than 14 people, and both hitting the town of Corpus Christi. Apparently even God has a sense of humor. So much for the "God Hates Gays" theory.

2011: David Caton from the Florida Family Association announced that his organization had raised enough money to rent airplanes with banners “to warn families about Gay Day at Disney” 10 hours per day on both Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4. “Florida Family Association wanted to warn families about this offensive event before they arrive at the Magic Kingdom on Saturday,” Caton noted. “This airplane banner is our best effort to accomplish that goal.” Photo: Flickr User Jericl Cat.

“Stella Brings the Family”

By: Miriam B. Schiffer Illustrated by Holly Clifton-Brown

Terri Schlichenmeyer

$16.99 / $22.99 Canada 36 pages c.2015, Chronicle Kids Who loves a party? YOU do, that’s who! You love the invitations, the decorations, and the balloons. You love the cake and ice cream, and the games are fun. If there’s a magician or a clown, that’s even better. But what if the party wasn’t quite right? What if the guest list made you upset? In the new book “Stella Brings the Family” by Miriam B. Schiffer, illustrated by Holly Clifton-Brown, a little girl learns how to make things all better. One day at school, Stella’s teacher said she had something special for the class. They were going to have a Mother’s Day celebration and everybody could invite their Mommies as special guests. That was fine for Jonathan and Leon and Carmen. Howie had two mothers, and he was sure they’d both come. It was fine for all the other kids, but it really worried Stella because she had two dads. That meant she’d be the only one at the party who didn’t have a mother. All week long, Stella fretted. She worried. She couldn’t stop thinking about it. Even her friends noticed she was sad but when Stella explained her situation, they didn’t quite understand. Leon wondered who made Stella’s lunch. Howie wanted to know who read bedtime stories in Stella’s house. Carmen asked who kissed Stella’s boo-boos. But lunch and bedtime and boo-boos weren’t “the problem.” Finally, Jonathan made a suggestion: Why didn’t Stella bring her whole family? She should bring all the people who made her lunches and gave her hugs and kisses. Stella’s Daddy liked that idea. Her Papa did, too, but Stella “wasn’t so sure.” A few days later, when it came time for

the class to get ready for the party, Stella worked very hard. The decorations went up, the invitations were made, and Party Day arrived! So did Howie’s two mothers and Jonathan’s grandma – plus a whole family of people who belonged to Stella! And that was okay. It was more than okay, in fact, and they had the best Mother’s Day party ever. But Father’s Day was coming up soon. What would Stella do next? Some sticky social situations, sadly, have no lower age limit. Still, there’s always a solution, as your child will see inside “Stella Brings the Family.” Head-on, and with no fuss, author Miriam B. Schiffer deals with an issue that’s actually

been around for a long time: what happens when a celebration occurs and a child is absent the “right” parent to laud? In this case, Schiffer gives her main characters a nice fix for what could be an upsetting day – and then she takes things a little bit further in a sweet, casually-told story with illustrations by Holly Clifton-Brown that are the perfect accompaniment. The audience here, I think, is right around the 4-to-7 age group, and preschool classes will want this book on their shelves. For sure, if your family has two mommies or two daddies, “Stella Brings the Family” is something your child will invite you to read again and again.

Dim Sum and Then Some Rick Karlin

T

ime for an SAT-type test: Brunch is to Americans as ______ is to Chinese. If you answered dim sum, then you’re already in on one of the best meals to be had. For the rest of you, a little explanation might be necessary. Dim sum's origins date back to the Silk Road exotic trade route, which spanned thousands of miles, bringing Asian goods to Europeans. It was customary for travelers to stop at teahouses along the way (sort of a precursor to the roadside diner). Hungry travelers need more than tea, so many of these places began serving dumplings and buns that could be prepared quickly. The tradition evolved into the bustling midday meal popular in southern China, especially Hong Kong.

1

The dim sum meal consists of seafood, meat or vegetables, sometimes in sauce, often in a dumpling or bun served in individual steamer baskets or on small plates. Typically a plate is enough for 2-3 people to sample each item. To keep up with the number of orders, traditional service involves carts moving throughout the restaurant and diners simply order from each cart, with each plate priced at just a few dollars. In South Florida only a few places offer cart service, most present you with a dim sum menu. I became addicted to dim sum while I lived with a Chinese family. Here are a few of my favorite places in the area.

Pine Court Chinese Bistro 10101 Sunset Strip Sunrise 954-748-5958

Decoding Dim Sum

This place gets busy early, so arrive soon after 11 a.m. or you’ll have quite a wait for a table. However, early seating means a longer wait for food, because they don’t really get cart serving going until the place fills up. In the meantime order some soup or a noodle dish from the a la carte menu. By the time you finish your first course, the carts

2

Toa Toa 4145 NW 88th Ave. Sunrise 954-746-8833 ToaToaChineseRestaurant.com

The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the food is delicious. The dim sum section of the menu is minimal; however, many of the dishes listed as appetizers

to order two or three dishes in multiples so that everyone has a chance to sample the dish at one time. For example, if there are six in your party and an order of dumplings is four, place an order for two servings at once.

Pink Buddha Chinese Restaurant 5949 S. University Dr., Davie 954-680-3388 Pink-Buddha.com

would be considered dim sum in most restaurants. Round that out with some soup and a couple of a la carte dishes and you’ll be more than satisfied.

China Pavilion Restaurant 10041 Pines Blvd. Pembroke Pines 954-431-2299

This place also gets packed soon after it opens, mostly with Chinese families, so you know the food is good. Service can be haphazard and it is menu service. No web site but it is on Facebook.

Dragon Gourmet Buffet 1091 S University Dr. Plantation 954-423-8088

This is a buffet, with a vast selection (its website says that there are 200 different items, I think that be an under-estimate), rather than dim sum service. It is very clean, and the service is friendly. The main reason to go there though, is the fact that it features not only a section devoted to dim sum, but also a sushi buffet (which is not only fresh, but also color coded as to whether it is vegetarian, raw or cooked). It’s reasonably priced, $16 bucks a head, max (depending on day and time). The web address listed is not working, but you can find it on Facebook.

// 5.27.2015 // SFGN.com //

While many dim sum dishes, such as bbq ribs, fried rice, steamed vegetables, etc., are easily identifiable, others can be a bit of a mystery. Asking for specific dishes during dim sum cart service can be frustrating, as most of the staff pushing the dim sum carts doesn’t speak English. The following are among the most popular dishes. Say the protein followed by the name of the dish, for example, rice noodles (fun) with shrimp (xi) would be xi fun. These are for Cantonese, rather than Mandarin, and are spelled phonetically.

Protein

Toa Toa's dim sum is offered on a checklist accompanied by a menu with pictures. The dim sum here is among the best I’ve had, and is delivered to your table by your waiter, no cart service. As dim sum dishes are best sampled with a large group, this means a wait between dishes. It’s best

will be plentiful. Service is friendly, although language can be a barrier with the cart pushers. There is a menu listing dishes with descriptions, but no hint on how to say the Chinese name. If you have questions, flag down your waiter to explain each dish. No web site or Facebook page.

A local all-star cast headlines GableStage’s production of Harvey Fierstein’s “Casa Valentina,” the story of a Catskills resort that catered to heterosexual cross-dressers. GableStage artistic director Joseph Adler isn’t a big fan of Harvey Fierstein’s musicals. But when it comes to the Tony Award-winning playwright and actor’s plays, that’s a different story. After Fierstein’s latest comedy, “Casa Valentina” closed on Broadway last year, Adler didn’t wait to snag the rights. “It really should have won the Tony (for best new play),” Adler insists. Thanks to GableStage’s reputation for excellence and Adler’s strong relationships with Broadway powerbrokers, the Coral Gables theater will present the regional premiere next weekend. Set in 1962 and based on actual events, “Casa Valentina” is the story of an inconspicuous Catskill Mountains bungalow colony in the Borscht Belt and its special clientele: white collar, heterosexual men with families whose favorite pastime was to dress and act like women. But, when given the opportunity to share their special lives with the world, the “girls” are faced with a dilemma that could risk public ridicule and personal ruin. “They’re not drag queens and they’re not gay,” explained Adler, “but the play offers a fascinating look at a subculture about which very little is known.”

Even though the transgender community has been thrust into the spotlight in recent years thanks to television and documentaries, heterosexual cross dressers still live in a closet of sorts. “It’s not pretty,” the director added, noting the cast doesn’t include professional female impersonators or drag queens, but an A-list group of local actors, including Cliff Burgess, Ryan Didato, Howard Elfman, Peter Galman, Wayne LeGette, Keven Reilley and Roland Rusinek. The actors began rehearsing in heels weeks ago and their first make-up session was “memorable,” Adler said, and “very funny.” The script is full of Fierstein’s smart wit and plenty of laughs, but the play is also a very touching story about relationships and self-discovery. Patti Gardner plays the daughter of a judge, who must come to grips with her father’s hobby and the consequences if his secret is revealed. Adler is never at a loss for words and he promises an entertaining evening that will appeal to the diverse audiences at GableStage, both straight and gay, who will be able to relate to the characters, their struggles and successes.

GableStage in the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Ave. in Coral Gables, presents Harvey Fierstein’s “Casa Valentina” through June 28. Performances Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $47-55 at GableStage.org.
