1 2 3

(PGN) – The doors to the nation’s oldest LGBT bookstore have been closed all summer. But a deal was inked last week that will reopen them. On Aug. 16, Philly AIDS Thrift signed a twoyear lease to rent the Gayborhood building that houses Giovanni’s Room — and to open a new business that will, in part, keep the iconic name. Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni’s Room will open Oct. 10, with sneak-peak shopping days throughout September. The store will offer new and used LGBT-centric books, as well as a wide variety of higher-end thrift-shop items. The new store will be considered an outpost

of PAT’s successful flagship store at 710 S. Fifth St. PAT is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charitable organization, which donates proceeds from sales to AIDS Fund, which distributes funding to area HIV/AIDS service organizations. Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni’s Room will encompass the 3,000-square-foot building at the corner of 12th and Pine streets It will stock $15,000 worth of LGBT-related books, about 2,000 titles, as well as items such as clothing, jewelry and small furniture. Couples Lead Rallies In Support Of Gay Marriage AP) Milwaukee – Supporters blew bubbles and held up signs in support of gay marriage Monday as same-sex couples boarded a bus for Chicago to listen to oral arguments before a federal appeals court. The 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has scheduled arguments for Tuesday in the state’s appeal of a federal judge’s June decision overturning Wisconsin’s ban on gay marriage. The appeals court has combined Wisconsin’s case with three from Indiana. Couples and their supporters rallied in

support of gay marriage Monday in Milwaukee, Indianapolis and other cities before boarding buses to Chicago, where they planned to attend an evening rally and then line up early Tuesday morning to get seats in the courtroom. Rachel McGraw, a 36-year-old doctoral student, joined the caravan at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, where several dozen people gathered for a send-off party. McGraw said she was going to Chicago because “it’s just the right thing to do.”

Michael Sam Gets His First Sack To Bolster His Case For Rams’ Roster Spot (EDGE Media) – On Monday, August 18, a transgender teen from the Bucks County, Pennsylvania area apparently committed suicide by stepping in front of a fast-moving train. The Daily Mail reports that 17-year-old Riley Matthew Moscatel, who decided to drop his birth name ‘Jessica’ in favor of ‘Riley’ in the spring, explained in a lengthy letter on Instagram that he was “a prisoner of my own body.” Surveillance cameras recorded the high school senior stepping in front of an Amtrak train near his home in Croydon, PA. He was

killed. “My mirror reflects Jessica, my heart and mind say Riley,” he posted in an Instagram picture with a backdrop of train tracks, just before ending his life. “You see me as the happiest person in school, I’m a prisoner of my own body.” In the lengthy message, Riley apologized to his parents for not being the daughter they wanted, saying, “I just let go of the balloon I’ve been holding for so long called ‘hope.’ With that being said, I love you. I’m sorry I’m not the daughter you wanted.”

Hornet Gay Social Network Ups Its HIV Prevention on Website Nicole Wiesenthal

Picture: www.gthrnt.com

Hornet Gay Social Network, one of the largest gay mobile apps, adds another in-app tool for AIDS prevention. Hornet, which has already taken great strides to prevent the spread of HIV, has added an in-app tool that allows users to access aids.gov. Hornet, which is free, allows gay men to engage and interact with others, but also reminds them of the importance of getting checked for HIV. Despite the fact that promotion for awareness for AIDS has decreased, the number of people with the virus has increased. Hornet hopes to curb that; it realizes that as such a widely used app it can help a lot. The newest tool allows members to find the ten nearest HIV testing locations so they can easily get checked any time or day. The widget, which is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, appears in the first slot on users’ favorite list within the app, reminding people to get checked for HIV.

Hornet has already done a lot to help promote HIV awareness. When it was first created in 2011, users who had been recently tested, got KYS (know your status) badges on their profiles, promoting members to get tested. Hornet also reminded users to constantly check their HIV status. The new app is just another addition to make sure the spread of HIV decreases. Within only one day, the new app got 30,000 hits.

(AP) SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — From a young age, Arlene Zarembka and her spouse, Zuleyma Tang-Martinez, were activists. Zarembka had a letter printed by the St. Louis PostDispatch when she was 12 years old calling for equality during the 1960s sit-in movement. Tang-Martinez’s parents often told her stories about her advocating for the underdog as a young girl, the Springfield News-Leader reported (http://sgfnow.co/1ArHdyN ). Now the couple is fighting for their own rights. Zarembka and Tang-Martinez, together for over 30 years, were married in 2005 in Canada. Their same-sex marriage isn’t recognized in St. Louis, where they live. The couple is one of 10 same-sex couples who are part of a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union suing the state of Missouri for marriage recognition. All the couples have been legally married in another state or country. Springfield couple Katherine and Ashley Quinn are also plaintiffs in the suit. Zarembka and Tang-Martinez were in Springfield

regon Gay Marriage Lawyers warded Legal Fees

(AP) – A federal judge has approved more than $133,000 in legal fees to one group of lawyers in Oregon’s gay marriage case. The money goes to three Portland lawyers who filed the first lawsuit challenging Oregon’s ban on same-sex marriage. The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/dwe0bn ) the state also will pay the legal fees for a second group of lawyers who worked with the American Civil Liberties Union, but the amount has not been announced. The cases led to the May 19 ruling by U.S. District Judge Michael McShane allowing same-sex couples to marry in Oregon.

for lives lost during the U.S. military action in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. “My mission is my mission between me and my lord. That’s it,” Brown said during a jailhouse interview in New Jersey, according to the court filings. “My mission is vengeance, for the lives, millions of lives are lost every day. All these lives are taken every single day by America, by this government,” Brown continued. “So a life for a life.” The newspaper writes Brown’s killing spree started on April 27 when he shot down Henderson near his home. On June 1 he used a gay dating app to lure Dwone AndersonYoung and Ahmed Said to a Seattle nightclub before shooting both at close range, according to documents. Brown said in the court filings that he “essentially executed” both men. After police circulated his photo in the media, Brown fled to New Jersey where he killed Brendan Tevlin, 19, in West Orange during in what was thought to be a robbery, according to prosecutors. Brown was arrested in New Jersey at a makeshift campsite on July 18. Brown called Tevlin’s shooting as a “just kill,” telling investigators he only went after adult men and tried not to target anyone in the presence of women, children or the elderly. Settle Wedding

(AP) – The owners of a lodge in central Minnesota have agreed to pick up the tab for the wedding and reception of a same-sex couple they initially turned away. The Minnesota Human Rights Department says Cole Frey and his fiance have settled their discrimination case against the owners of Rice Creek Hunting and Recreation. The Rice Creek Lodge is a wedding venue in Little Falls. The Department of Human Rights investigated and determined there was probable cause of discrimination by the lodge owners due to sexual orientation. Same-sex marriage was legalized in Minnesota a year ago. Human Rights Commissioner Kevin Lindsey says it’s the first public accommodation case for his department related to samesex marriage. The attorney for the lodge owners, Paul Rogosheske, says they realized they made a mistake in refusing to accommodate the couple.

this month to speak at the monthly Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays meeting at National Avenue Christian Church. They spoke on the history of the struggle for LGBT rights in Missouri and their own reasons for joining the lawsuit. The couple helped form a group in Missouri to advocate for the rights of gays and lesbians in the mid-1980s. The couple hopes their personal story will show the importance of marriage recognition. “I think that the whole strides that we made as a community has all been about the personal stories told to people who might not initially be thinking that they would be OK with the gays and lesbians and transgender people. I think the personal story is what it’s all about,” said Zarembka, an attorney. Zarembka said a judgment on the lawsuit will likely be handed down on Sept. 5 in Kansas City, if the case does not go to trial. She expects there to be an appeal from whichever side loses.

istrict To Meet With ransgender Student

Family

(PGN) After a public dustup, a New Jersey school this week announced it would work with the family of one of its students to respect her gender identity. Earlier this month, an official at Thorne Middle School, in Middletown, reportedly told Angela Peters that her 13-year-old daughter, Rachel Pepe, could not return to school as a female. Pepe transitioned from male to female over the summer with the support of her family. But, Peters told the Asbury Park Press, the unnamed school official said that, unless Pepe’s birth certificate reflected her female gender identity, she would need to report to school dressed as a male, and the school would use her legal male name. The official also declined to make accommodations for Pepe, such as allowing her to use a separate restroom, and did not offer any alternative-education options. But, earlier this week, Middletown Township Public School District Superintendent William O. George 3d said he would meet with Pepe’s family to come to a resolution. According to Asbury Park Press, Pepe’s family is hoping to find a new school out of the district for her, with tuition assistance from the district. Garden State Equality will provide LGBT-sensitivity training to administration and staff within the district, in partnership with Lambda Legal and the Central New Jersey chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. “We applaud Superintendent George for taking the right steps to affirm the health and safety of our students,” said GSE executive director Andrea Bowen. “This is a victory for transgender students everywhere. This Middletown student and students like her are heroes for standing up for their needs. We’re excited that the community came together in dialogue to bring this situation to a happy resolution.” From our media partner PGN-The Philadelphia Gay News.

Outlaw Transgender Discrimination

(AP) – New York’s governor says transgender people should be protected from discrimination and says that if elected to a second term he’ll push to include gender identity and expression in the state’s civil rights law. In a letter to the Empire State Pride Agenda, Cuomo notes that transgender people face significant discrimination and that the state should outlaw discrimination against them when it comes to things like housing, employment and public accommodations. The state already prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, disability and gender. Legislation that would add gender identity and expression to the list has passed the state Assembly but not the Senate. Empire State Pride Agenda, an organization that advocates for gay and transgender rights, announced Cuomo’s support Thursday. It also says it’s endorsing Cuomo’s re-election.

AP) Berlin, Germany – Charismatic Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit, whose reputation has taken a beating over struggles in the construction of the German capital’s new international airport, said Tuesday he will step down by the end of the year. Wowereit told reporters he would resign Dec. 11 after more than 13 years in office. Berlin’s first openly gay mayor, Wowereit helped turn the city into a top tourist destination. Wowereit coined its famous “Poor, but sexy” slogan, which helped attract hip youngsters from around the globe to the city’s famous nightlife and highlighted Berlin’s low living costs. He said he was grateful to have been in charge as “Berlin became an international metropolis.” “It’s good that the city has internationalized itself, but it’s also as important that the city remains livable,” the Social Democrat said. Wowereit, who still had two more years in office, says continued speculation over his future amid his plummeting popularity had made it difficult to govern. “The decision did not come easily,” he said.

Over Gay Icon Divine’s Estate Settled

ispute

(Watermark) – An Orlando district judge has settled a dispute over the estate of gay icon Divine, most famous for being the muse of director John Waters. Divine’s legal name is Harris Glenn Milstead, and he died in 1988 at the age of 42 from an enlarged heart. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael O’Quinn, a friend of Milstead’s mother, Frances, became Frances’ business manager and then was named as beneficiary of Milstead’s estate in her will. Frances later revised the will to leave the estate to her nieces and nephews. The court ruled that O’Quinn willfully ignored the revision and took over the estate. The misappropriation was discovered by O’Quinn’s business partner in 2011 and led to the court case. The case was settled July 10. From our media partner Watermark.

HHacker’s Warning: Grindr Bug IDs Users’ Exact Locations (EDGE Media) – A hacker has sent warning messages to over 100,00 users worldwide of the popular hookup app Grindr, claiming that a flaw in the app allows the exact locations of users to be determined, UK GLBT news site Pink News reported on August 22. The hacker or hackers behind the claim made an effort to warn users living in countries with anti-gay laws, according to a an Aug. 20 posting at the source Pink News referred to, tech news site NDTV. The party behind the warning messages “claims to have used a secondary flaw to be able to send messages to over 100,000 users in 70 countries with anti-gay laws,” NDTV reported. “The messages and posts express concern that Grindr users might be targeted, persecuted or even murdered.” The NDTV post said that the hackers had also posted news of the app’s alleged flaw at various social media sites, including YouTube and Pastebin text dump. One such notification at Pastebin took Grindr to task, claiming, “officials at Grindr have been informed several times within the past months about these issues, which would seem to imply that the concept of ‘social responsibility’ is lost upon Grindr.... Knowing that Grindr-Users in countries such as these are being put unnecessarily at a high risk should be reason enough for Grindr to change its system.”

The Pastebin posting added, “Geo-based (dating) apps use the location of every user to show distances to each other. Using the same process as GPS satellites, it is possible for a malicious entity to perform a lateration[4], sending distance-requests from three different points and using the responses to calculate the exact position of a particular user.” As a result of the flaw, the NDTV report alleges, “With a single click, user profiles are displayed as pins on a map.” Moreover, “message senders can be spoofed, and users can be impersonated.” The NDTV report referenced a recent triple homicide in which a perpetrator in Lahore, India, used another hookup app, ManJam, to lure his victims. The killer justified his actions by saying that he wished to counter a “spreading evil in society.” Grindr responded to a query from Pink News with an email message, the UK site reported. “For Grindr users concerned about showing their proximity, we make it very easy for them to remove this option and we encourage them to disable ‘show distance’ in their privacy settings,” the email from Grindr read. “As always, our user security is our top priority and we do our best to keep our Grindr community secure.” From our media partner EDGE.

‘The Wizard of Oz’ at 75: Did you know...? Todd Leopold

Photo: Wikipedia

CNN

“The Wizard of Oz,” one of the most beloved movies of all time, celebrates the 75th anniversary of its release this month. Here are some things you may not have known about the film:

1. That makeup was killer

Makeup in 1939, especially the elaborate and colorful cosmetics many members of the cast wore, wasn’t as safe as the stuff performers wear today. In fact, some of it was downright deadly. Buddy Ebsen, who was originally cast as the Tin Man, had to leave the film when his lungs became infected by aluminum dust. The makeup was adjusted for Jack Haley, but he still remembered it as “awful.” Margaret Hamilton’s copper-based makeup as the Wicked Witch was poisonous, so she lived on a liquid diet during the film, and the makeup was carefully cleaned off her each day. Bert Lahr’s Cowardly Lion costume was so heavy -- “like carrying a mattress around,” said his makeup man -- that he’d emerged drenched at the end of shooting. Even Ray Bolger’s Scarecrow face left permanent marks.

2. Poor Margaret Hamilton

The actress has frightened generations of “Oz” fans with her portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West, but the makeup she wore wasn’t the only indignity. She was burned in one scene. Also, though she played an old crone, she was just 36 at the time.

3. A Frank coincidence

When the wardrobe department was fishing around for a jacket for Professor Marvel (Frank Morgan), some MGM staffers bought a bunch at a second-hand store. One of them fit Morgan perfectly. When he checked the label, it said “L. Frank Baum” -- the author of the “Oz” books. Yeah, it’s classified as “legend” by Snopes.com, but it still makes for a great story.

4. You’re a rich dog, too

Toto, actually named Terry, was paid $125 a week for her services. (Yes, Toto was a female.) Judy Garland got $500 a week for a lot more work, and no doubt many of the extras got much less than the dog. (According to Jerry Maren, who played a Munchkin, the Munchkins got $50 a week.)

5. Changing colors

The lights required for Technicolor were so bright that Dorothy’s dress, which appears blue and white, was actually blue and pink. Also, the slippers -- silver in Baum’s book -- were made red to show off the process. Incidentally, the five known pairs from the film are each worth $1.5 million today.

6. Oscar! Oscar!

“The Wizard of Oz” was hugely successful in its initial run and nominated for six Oscars (though one of them, for color cinematography, is considered “unofficial” on the Academy’s database). It won two, one for its score, one for “Over the Rainbow” -- which was almost cut from the film. Director Victor Fleming came out well, too. Though not nominated for “Oz,” he won for directing the year’s best picture winner, “Gone with the Wind.”

7. ‘Dark Side’ of the rainbow

At some point in the ‘90s, word went around that Pink Floyd’s 1973 album “Dark Side of the Moon” synced up with the movie in eerie ways. Though members of Floyd swear it’s pure coincidence -- and psychologists will tell you that we see links where we want to -some of the matchups are striking: “The Great Gig in the Sky” meshes well with the tornado; the old Side 1 of the album ends just as the sepia-colored portion of the movie does; and the heartbeat at the album’s close coincides with Dorothy listening to the Tin Man’s torso. Even if it’s bull, it still makes for entertaining watching. soflagaynews //

Gay Bathhouses Nationwide Face Uncertain Future Matt Hamilton Associated Press

Gay bathhouses that once remained in the shadows to stay in business are now seeking attention to keep their doors open. Some are doing aggressive online advertising and community outreach. Others tout their upscale amenities like plush towels and marble baths. A bathhouse in Ohio has even added hotel rooms and a nightclub. Gone are the days when bathhouses drew crowds just by offering a discreet place for gays to meet, share saunas and, often, have sex. “The acceptance of gays has changed the whole world. It’s taken away the need to sneak into back-alley places,” said Dennis Holding, 75, who owns a Miami-based bathhouse. In the heyday of bathhouses in the late 1970s, there were nearly 200 gay bathhouses in cities across the U.S., but by 1990, the total had dropped to approximately 90, according to Damron, the publisher of an annual gay travel guide. In the last decade, bathhouses, including ones in San Diego, Syracuse, Seattle and San Antonio, have shut down and the total nationwide is less than 70. Most patrons are older. Hollywood Spa — one of the largest bathhouses in Los Angeles, a city regarded as the country’s bathhouse capital — closed in April. Owner Peter D. Sykes said fewer customers and rising rent put an end to four decades in business. “Bathhouses were like dirty bookstores and parks: a venue to meet people,” said Sykes, who still owns the smaller North Hollywood Spa. “Today, you can go to the supermarket.” Bathhouses date to the Roman Empire. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, American bathhouses were built in many cities to maintain public hygiene among poor and immigrant communities. Chicago and Manhattan each had about 20 public bathhouses. But the need for public places to wash up declined and by the 1950s and ‘60s, bathhouses largely had become rendezvous spots for gays, prompting occasional raids because sodomy was still criminalized. Privately run, gay-owned bathhouses

8

proliferated in the 1970s, offering a haven for gay and bisexual men to meet. Clubs like New York City’s Continental bathhouse and Los Angeles’ 8709 Club saw a steady stream of patrons. Each venue was operated like a speakeasy: a nondescript building often located in the urban fringe. In-house entertainment was common, from DJs to live performers. Bette Midler even launched her career from the stage of the Continental. Amid the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s, bathhouses were vilified for enabling promiscuity and helping spread the disease, and many either closed voluntarily or by legal pressure. Those that remained were stigmatized, and now many younger gays see them as anachronisms. “The younger generation’s main fear is that it’s some dark, seedy place,” said T.J. Nibbio, the executive director of the North American Bathhouse Association. NABA formed two years ago for bathhouse owners to pool best practices for marketing and operations. To attract younger patrons, some bathhouses offer steep discounts, cutting admission by as much as 60 percent. At the three-story Midtowne Spa in downtown Los Angeles, 18- to 20-year-olds get in for $5 any time. On Tuesdays, Los Angeles’ Melrose Spa lets those 18 to 25 in for free, a deal that brought 22-year-old Brett Sparks on a recent midweek visit. “You’re either hooking up online or you are here, or you go to bars in West Hollywood, get drunk and hook up,” said Sparks, acknowledging that although the bathhouse crowd skews older, it’s not as risky as going home with a stranger. “Here it’s a safer environment — there’s condoms and other protection.” The CEO of Ohio-based Flex Spas, Todd Saporito, has positioned his bathhouse chain as a pillar of the gay community. Saporito uses the chain’s Cleveland-based flagship spa, whose 50,000 square feet include luxury hotel rooms and a nightclub, to run the city’s annual pride parade and this year’s Gay Games, an international LGBT athletic competition. Flex Spas also has sponsored the

White Party, an annual electronic music festival in Palm Springs, and partnered with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, part of an effort to frame the bathhouse as an opportunity for preventing risky behavior. Flex Spas has had mixed success over the past few years. Its location in Atlanta has seen “exponential” growth, but clubs in New Orleans and Columbus, Ohio, have closed, Saporito said. Saporito said more progressive views on homosexuality aren’t evenly spread across the country, underscoring the need for modern bathhouses in some areas. Still, he takes nothing for granted, regardless of the location. “Bathhouses at some level will go extinct if you don’t offer something more than a towel,” Saporito said.

2014 Emmy Awards: 5 Buzzworthy Moments CNN

Cranston Bryan and his wife

The Emmy Awards will never be confused for the MTV Video Music Awards – especially when they air on consecutive nights. It’s status quo versus cutting-edge cool. Even when Hollywood lets its hair down, it’s on the tame side. Still, host Seth Meyers did his best to liven up the proceedings. And the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards that aired Monday night did offer up some memorable moments.

1. Seth and Billy’s crazy quiz

Meyers teamed up with “Billy on the Street star” Billy Eichner to dash around the streets of New York and bombard pedestrians with random pop culture questions. During a frenetic five minutes, the twosome tackled Emmy snubs, challenged people to name an Emmy nominee and generally terrorized unsuspecting New Yorkers. Then there’s the collection they took up for the cast of the “Big Bang Theory.” “Why is the Emmys not just @billyeichner doing that for three hours?” tweeted actress Anna Kendrick.

2. ‘Weird Al’’s plot parody parade

the sometimes Oscar host who delivered a heartfelt tribute to his buddy, Robin Williams. “It is very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in our lives,” he said of the actor, who was found dead of an apparent suicide earlier this month. Crystal spoke fondly, touchingly for nearly five minutes. The night before, the VMAs paused to remember Williams ... for a mere 23 seconds.

3. Gwen’s ‘Adele Dazeem’ moment

the

Remember when TV theme songs meant something? “The Brady Bunch.” “Gilligan’s Island.” You got a catchy tune and the plot, all in 30 seconds. Nobody does that anymore. Nobody, except “Weird Al” Yankovic, who skewered everything from “Mad Men” to “Game of Thrones” in a medley with choice lines like, “Jon Hamm’s never won an Emmy/ Oh who cares? He’s still Jon freaking Hamm.” Remember when John Travolta, for some inexplicable reason, mangled Idina Menzel’s name as ‘Adele Dazeem’? Gwen Stefani had one of those while presenting the Emmy for Outstanding Variety/Music/Comedy Series to “The Colbert Report.” Or, as she put it, “The Colbort Report.” Fortunately, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine was there to quickly correct her.

The gag that paid off big time last night was when “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston planted a long, wet one on Julia Louis-Dreyfus as she headed to the stage to accept her Emmy award? When the stars were presenting an earlier award, they had a running gag that LouisDreyfus couldn’t remember that Cranston was a guest star on “Seinfeld,” and that the pair even made out on camera. Not to be brushed aside, Cranston blocked her as she walked toward the stage to accept

her trophy for best actress in a comedy series for “Veep.” He swept Louis-Dreyfus into a passionate embrace until Jimmy Fallon forced them to separate. “Yeah, yeah, he was on ‘Seinfeld,’” she quipped, while the camera panned to Cranston wiping the lipstick off his lips. First, she released the groundbreaking and heartwarming single She Keeps Me Warm, perhaps the first hit pop song about romantic love between two women. The song was sampled on Same Love, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ stunning, Grammy winning ode to marriage equality. A few months ago Lambert joined Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Madonna, onstage at the Grammys. As Queen Latifah performed the wedding ceremony for thirty-three couples, some of them same sex couples, the foursome performed an emotionally riveting medley of Same Love and Madonna’s Open Your Heart. The set concluded with Lambert and Madonna performing a duet of She’ll Keep Me Warm’s final bars. Lambert appeared to be fighting tears as the audience cheered. In her newly released single “Secrets,” Lambert sings about her bipolar disorder, her highly dysfunctional family, and other “secrets” which she chooses to reveal. The song tells listeners much about who Mary Lambert is. “Secrets” will be included on Lambert’s new CD, Heart on My Sleeve, due out on October 14. Can you describe how it felt to participate in the Grammy wedding? It was really huge, pivotal, an affirmation of what I do and what we’ve accomplished. As the date came closer to the performance I realized that it has nothing to do with me. This is about the shift in our culture. Around what age did you realize that

you’re a lesbian? My mom came out when I was six or seven. That’s not difficult to process before you’re tainted by society. I came out much later. Before that I was boy crazy, so it hit me like a ton of bricks. The only lesbians I knew in high school were very femme, not my type. I like more of a tomboy type, so I thought “I’m not gay.” One of the people who helped me come out was a close friend who was thrown out of a Christian school for being gay. His parents sent him to Exodus (ex-gay ministry). Is your Christian faith at odds with your lesbianism? Our faith is our own personal story. I have a strong faith that I prefer to keep personal. How would you categorize your music to new listeners? I like to say that I never intended to be a pop singer. I intended to be a healer. I hope to urge people to be empathetic and compassionate. People don’t relate to each other or see each other as equals, and this causes problems. I want to open up and be vulnerable, and to encourage others to be vulnerable. Your new CD title “Heart on My Sleeve” is so appropriate, considering how much of yourself you reveal. What kind of responses are you getting? I’ve gotten nothing but support. It’s all about love. If I had heard songs like “Same Love” and “She Keeps Me Warm” at 17, it would have been life-changing. Heart on My Sleeve is now available for pre-order at Amazon.

If You Could Read My Mind #2 The Darkest Shadow David-Elijah Nahmod

I could never imagine hating someone I don’t know because someone else told me that I should, or holding a grudge for thirty years against someone. Mostly, I couldn’t imagine judging or ridiculing a disability. In the world of the Dark Shadows fandom, such behavior is commonplace. Dark Shadows was a short-lived 1960s daytime soap opera that became a pop culture sensation about a year into its five year run. For the next three and a half years, Dark Shadows was one of the most talked about shows on TV, daytime or primetime. Its popularity was due to its unique, sometimes bizarre (by daytime soap standards) collection of characters, which included vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, mad scientists, and even a Phoenix, a woman from ancient Egypt who drew her life force from fire. There had never been anything on TV quite like Dark Shadows. Watching Dark Shadows was a pivotal part of my childhood and remains a beloved fixture of my DVD viewing to this very day. It was, therefore, with great excitement, in 1983, that I attended my first Dark Shadows Festival. Similar in structure to Star Trek conventions, Dark Shadows Festivals were a chance for fans to mingle with each other and get to know attending cast members for a celebration of the show. At the time, Dark Shadows was enjoying a resurgence in popularity as reruns of it were airing on PBS, which firmly established the series as a cult phenomenon. Little did I know that in choosing to attend these Festivals, I would be subjecting myself to behavior which ultimately rivaled the anti-gay religious abuse inflicted upon

me by my parents two decades earlier. I was entering a very unhealthy world which would prove to have a lasting and dangerous effect on my PTSD symptoms. The first few Dark Shadows Festivals I attended were enjoyable; I met many of the cast members, got them to sign photos for me and made a few friends, some of whom I kept in touch with throughout the year. My first indication that things were about to go wrong came in 1985 when Dark Shadows cast member Joel Crothers died after a brief illness. He was 44 years old. I had known

Dark Shadows fans thought Crothers’ death from AIDS was hilarious. By 1990, these events were losing their luster. Many of my fellow fans, I soon realized, were a mean-spirited bunch. Cliques were rampant, and the members of each clique were feuding with all the other cliques. It was not uncommon to be told that you “had to choose sides, prove that you’re a true friend, or else....” My PTSD had not yet been properly diagnosed at this time, and I’ll admit that I didn’t respond well to this toxic environment.

that Crothers was gay, having seen him in gay bars in New York City a few years earlier. 1985 was the year I’d moved to San Francisco for the first time. The AIDS crisis was escalating, and death was all around me. Imagine my shock when a fellow Dark Shadows fan called me on the phone to laugh about the fact that Joel Crothers had died of AIDS. That fan was a gay man who ultimately died of AIDS himself. I soon found out that other

I had a few psychotic meltdowns at these events, and was publicly ridiculed for them. It must have been obvious that I was in distress when these incidents occurred, yet no one asked if I was OK. Scorn and laughter were all I received. This made my symptoms worse. Soon after, a small circle of fans subjected me to false rumors about my sex life, along with malicious lies about my HIV status and

soflagaynews //

SouthFloridaGayNews

my alleged drug use—I, in fact, live a drug free life, always have. I’m also lucky enough to be HIV negative, which didn’t stop other fans from warning each other that I was “spreading AIDS.” It quickly became obvious that many other fans were being subjected to this kind of abuse, all from the same circle of people, who a friend of mine dubbed the “Dark Shadows police.” There were no standards for decent, humane behavior and no accountability. The perpetrators were allowed to behave this way with impunity for years and years. Several of the perps served on the board which organized fan events. To my disgust, I witnessed a few incidents in which physically disabled Dark Shadows fans were laughed at for being “ugly”. At the time I didn’t realize how severely my PTSD was being inflamed by attending the festivals. I was often hyper-manic at these events, yet I retained enough awareness to realize how reprehensible the conduct I witnessed was. The perpetrators, many of whom sat in judgement of my condition, claimed to be the sane ones. They were hurting people and clearly didn’t care. In 1991, I was contacted by a gay fan who asked me to commit perjury so he could file a nuisance lawsuit against a Dark Shadows cast member. He wanted me to swear in a courtroom that I’d heard her say that she didn’t want “faggots with AIDS” to come to her public events. I had gotten to know the actress in question a bit and knew her to be a lovely woman. The fan’s claim was a complete and malicious falsehood. I happily provided the actress with a signed statement in which I verified that I’d been asked to

Bathroom Vanities • Showers • Faucets • Tiles Cabinet Handles • Door Locks • Kitchen Organizer Hinges • Glass Hardware and more... commit perjury. As far as I know, the lawsuit never went before a judge. I never felt safe or comfortable at Dark Shadows Festivals again. I went from a regular attendee to an occasional one, with five-year lapses in between my appearances. On the rare occasions I did go, either to see the actors or to connect with the few friends I had made at these events, the toxic environment left me feeling triggered, manic, borderline psychotic. I would again be ridiculed for being mentally ill, often by people who had obvious mental health issues of their own. Eventually I stopped attending altogether--it finally became clear to me that these events were making me sick. In retrospect, the Dark Shadows Festivals were overrun with so much unhealthy behavior, I suspect that they might have pushed even the sanest person over the edge. A few years ago, I gave the Dark Shadows fandom a second chance through online chatrooms, primarily via Facebook. This might be safer, I thought, since I wouldn’t be interacting with people face to face. Hatred runs deep in Dark Shadows fandom. People I had not seen or spoken too since the 1980s had been nursing grudges against me for decades. A woman I’d never met nor spoken too relentlessly warned people not to associate with me and demanded that I be banned from various groups. Several people that I’d had no previous contact with online or offline gleefully joined her little gangbang. As before, I wasn’t the only one. Postings at some of these boards informed me that others were being subjected to this same kind of hate and abuse, which often denigrated into sexist and anti-gay slurs. Some of the

hate came from fans who were gay. As I’m not a mental health care provider, I couldn’t even begin to imagine what could possibly be motivating such conduct. Some of the perps claimed to be this actor’s “best friend” or that actor’s “boyfriend.” Others feel that they’re celebrities because they published “fanzines” (fan magazines) or because they ran a blog or a chat room. Was all this venom and hate being perpetrated to protect the little “kingdoms” they had created? I write this column entry in the hope that it will reach some of them, and that it will give them pause to think about their behavior. They’re hurting people intentionally and maliciously. They target the most vulnerable people they can find and inflict the maximum amount of pain they can. Then they laugh and walk away. My love for Dark Shadows the TV series remains intact. I have a few friends here in San Francisco who also enjoy it. We watch it together on DVD and don’t attend the fan events. I still write about the show for Fangoria Magazine, but my involvement in “fandom” is over. In walking away, I leave behind an environment which repeatedly triggered and inflamed my PTSD. I’ll leave it to mental health care providers to diagnose the bizarre and toxic behavior I saw in this strange little world. As I prepare to join a new support group for people who live with PTSD, I can only hope that the “Dark Shadows police” will get the help they need and give a little thought to those they’ve hurt with such gleeful and reckless abandon. And I hope that those who’ve been hurt will get the love and support they deserve.

column off the wall

IT’S THE ECONOMY, STUPID. Pier Angelo

This is a great country. From the time you are a toddler they tell you that you “can be anything you want to be” regardless. And it is true. After all, George W. Bush became president and Vanna White has been turning letters on Wheel of Fortune since 1982. I guess Ms. Pam Bondi’s dream was to become Florida Attorney General regardless of her IQ and her haphazard interpretation of the law or the incoherence of her dumb decisions. The same-sex marriage train has left the station, and the 48-year-old twice-divorced Ms. Bondi is firmly stuck on the platform. She has made it a personal political crusade to oppose the recent rulings despite the facts, one after the other, unanimously say that denying gays the right to marry is unconstitutional. All of the arguments brought forward by the troglodytes opposing gay marriage have been debunked long ago. Even the last Florida ruling by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel opened with the Declaration of Independence: “In 1776, our Nation’s Founders went to war in pursuit of a then novel , yet noble, goal: the creation of a Government that recognizes its people are : Endowed…with certain inalienable rights and that all are equal in the eyes of the law”. The Crazy Christers and their right wing Republican friends continue to recycle the same blatherskite. They still focus on “tradition” even though preserving tradition for its own sake is a circular proposition. The truth is that from the dawn of ancient history, a man married a woman out of desire …—for her father’s land or livestock. Marriage was a business arrangement, the bride a commodity, her dowry a deal sweetener. And the groom was likely to be an unwitting pawn in an economic alliance between two clans or tribes, and often between Royal Houses. A church might or might not have been involved. Blissfully Government was out of the loop. There was no paper work, no divorce and – more often than not… no love. Also the argument that marriage is for “procreation” does not hold water. Marriage has never been preconditioned on one’s ability to bear children. Having children is not mandatory.

In the meantime Ms. Bondi, and many like her across our nation, continues to spend loads of taxpayer money fighting a lost cause instead of seeing the financial economic bonanza gay marriages would bring to each of their own states. She simply doesn’t care or realize how dire our economic and fiscal straits truly are. And how every little bit helps. Maybe she did not read the memo. Businesses trying to shrug off hard times are waking up to the vast potential of the new and burgeoning market for same-sex weddings and honeymoons as more states and countries allow gay marriage. Industry experts warn that any businesses eyeing the pink dollar need to be welcoming to gays while also avoiding the clichés associated with the community if they want to be taken seriously. Polls say they are ready to “roll out the rainbow carpet” to gay couples getting married in Florida. Vendors and the service industry are becoming painfully aware they’re missing out on this. In the first year after New York City legalized same-sex marriages, for example, it reaped $260 million in economic impact, according to a survey by NYC & Co, the city’s tourism marketing firm. Almost 9000 gaymarriage licenses have been issued in that period and many to out-of-state couples. Similar numbers have been reported by all the states where same-sex marriages have been made legal. Here in Florida the Greater Ft. Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau has been targeting gay and lesbian tourists for the last 18 years and is exploring ways to promote same-sex weddings with the expectation gay marriage is legalized soon. Many hotels already have gay-wedding certified specialists in house to cater to the needs of same-sex couples. 2013 saw a record breaking 1.3 million LGBT tourists in Broward County. Many more would be expected to visit if the ban is lifted state-wise. Ms. Bondi should stop fighting her own frivolous battle. The time has come for her to step down, resign, get out of the way and allow someone else to represent the interests of the State, of the business community and LGBT people at large.

In 1998, less than a year after I’d begun living fulltime as a woman, I owned an old car which developed a very small leak in the gas tank. The spot of gas the leak left on the ground was tiny, but it was enough to smell it if you came within a dozen yards or so of where it was parked on the street. One of my neighbors called the cops to complain and they showed up at my door one evening. I told the officers that the car was indeed mine and I needed to get it to a local repair shop. The officers were very pleasant and solicitous. They called me “Ma’am” and offered to follow me to the shop to take me home after dropping off the car. That is, until I was asked to show my driver’s license. I hadn’t yet been able to legally change my name and gender marker, and it was obvious in the cop’s eyes as he examined my identification what was going to happen next. Suddenly, my car was an immediate threat to public safety and had to be towed and impounded. When I protested, I was threatened with arrest (for what exactly was never made clear). In the end, what would be been a minor inconvenience had my proper name and gender been on that license became a huge, expensive hassle that ended up costing me over a thousand dollars. This took place in a relatively quiet suburban New Jersey town which at the time was very white, and perhaps that’s why the contrast was so clear. While these cops accepted me as a woman they approached me as a local in need of a little help. Once they realized I was trans, I became a target, an undesirable, someone who needed to be put down and punished. We’re seeing much the same dynamic play out in the way recent events have been approached and dealt with by law enforcement agencies. In the case of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, there was an extended standoff between law enforcement and armed militia members which eventually ended when law enforcement backed off. Contrast that with what we’ve seen in Ferguson, Missouri. Cops leading with military equipment and tactics, arresting journalists, even calling citizens exercising their First Amendment right to protest “animals”. It would be easy to blame all of this on racial tensions in a town with mostly black residents and a mostly white government, a place where just three of the fifty-three police officers are black. It’s also just a little too easy. As Kareem Abdul-Jabbar writes in an op-ed for Time: “This fist-shaking of everyone’s racial agenda distracts America from the larger

SouthFloridaGayNews

issue that the targets of police overreaction are based less on skin color and more on an even worse Ebolalevel affliction: being poor. Of course, to many in America, being a person of color is synonymous with being poor, and being poor is synonymous with being a criminal. Ironically, this misperception is true even among the poor. And that’s how the status quo wants it.” Even Abdul-Jabbar’s well-reasoned argument doesn’t boil it down enough, though. More than just race, more than just economic status, more than any other single factor it’s about being different. Different from the predominant skin color, different from the economic status of one’s neighbors, different in life choices, just different. It matters far less the actual cause of that difference than the fact of it. Just as the attitude of the police completely changed toward me when my status in their eyes changed from woman to transsexual, from “one of us” to “one of them”, so too does the attitude of law enforcement change when dealing with those most like themselves versus those who they perceive as outsiders. Insiders must be understood, respected, and dealt with in a non-violent, nonconfrontational manner, even if it’s wellknown that many are armed. Outsiders, on the other hand, can be considered agitators and therefore can be confronted with a militarized police force using harsh crowd control tactics like curfews, tear gas, and rubber bullets. For all of the progress we’ve made and are continuing to make in the fight for LGBT rights and equality, we need to remember this. Don’t remain silent as any cop, politician, or activist tries to argue that someone else’s rights are more urgent or more important than your own. Remember that what they’re really arguing for is their right to join the oppressor class at your expense. Bisexuality from A-Z

Part 1 of 3

R. T. J

Faith Cheltenham

In honor of the 15th anniversary of Celebrate Bisexuality Day on Sept. 23rd, 2014, BiNet USA, GLAAD and a host of other bisexual and LGBT organizations are launching Bisexual Awareness Week (Sept 20 – 27, 2014) to draw attention to

A is for Asexual –

A recent survey of the University of California college system found 5% of students identifying as asexual. AsexualAwarenessWeek.com defines an asexual person as one “who does not experience sexual attraction.” Some people who identify as asexual or “ace” experience romantic attractions while other asexuals identify as “aromantic” and do not generally desire romantic relationships. Members of the ace community can also identify along the bisexual spectrum and may use terms like bi-romantic and/or pan-romantic to indicate their asexual romantic attractions to more than one gender.

the awesomeness that is the bisexual community. To kick start affirming discussions about the bisexual community, its history and future, here is the first part in a three part series, “Bisexuality A-Z.”

C is for Camille Holthaus –

A warm, witty woman full of compassion and just the right amount of cynicism, Camille Holthaus is a rising star in the bisexual community. As the new Chair of the Minnesota-based non-profit the Bisexual Organizing Project, Holthaus works to “build, serve and advocate for an empowered bisexual, pansexual, fluid, queer, and unlabeled (Bi+) community to promote social justice.” The Bisexual Organizing Project (BOP) hosts the BECAUSE conference, a yearly gathering for the bisexual community, its experts, thought leaders and organizers.

D is for Dr. David Lourea –

After a two year battle, BiPOL activist, AIDS educator, and therapist Dr. David Lourea persuaded the San Francisco Department of Public Health to recognize bisexual men in their official AIDS statistics. Dr. Lourea died in San Francisco on Nov. 10, 1992 from kidney failure associated with AIDS, but his work still lives on via the David Lourea Papers, a public collection at the San Francisco Public Library. Asexual Awareness Image: https://sites.psu.edu/asexuality

B is for Bisexual –

According to gender and sexuality expert Robyn Ochs, “Bisexuals are people who acknowledge in themselves the potential to be attracted – romantically and/or sexually – to people of more than one sex and/or gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.” The bisexual spectrum can include identity labels like pansexual, fluid, queer, non-monosexual, multisexual, polysexual, and pomosexual.

ev anet Edwards and her husband on their wedding day his image is widely retweeted every Valentine’s Day by bisexuals everywhere.

E is for Ellyn Ruthstrom –

As president of the Bisexual Resource Center, the oldest and longest running bisexual non-profit organization, Ellyn is a pillar of the bisexual world who provides support and resources to bisexual people across the nation. In March 2014 the Bisexual Resource Center (BRC) partnered with GLAAD to launch #bihealthmonth which drew attention to bisexual health inequity. In June 2014, Ruthstrom co-chaired a historic gathering of bisexual health researchers alongside Fenway Health to form the Bisexual Research Collaborative on Health (BiRCH).

F is for Dr. Fritz Klein –

In 1974 Dr. Fritz Klein published “The Bisexual Option: A concept of one hundred percent intimacy,” and then went on to found the American Institute of Bisexuality and Journal of Bisexuality. Klein also created the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid (KSOG) to measure sexual orientation by expanding upon the earlier Kinsey scale. G is for Gary North – In 1987, Gary helped co-found the North American Bisexual Network, which eventually went on to change its name to BiNet USA. North also published the first national bisexual newsletter called Bisexuality: News, Views, and Networking. A former newspaper editor, North has been a backbone for the bisexual community for nearly three decades and is considered by many to be a “founding father” of bisexuality.

H is for Health –

Bisexual people often report poorer health than their gay, lesbian and heterosexual counterparts. Some of the health inequities currently being researched: • Higher rate of tobacco use, compared to heterosexuals, lesbians and gays. • Higher rate of anxiety or mood disorder compared to heterosexuals, lesbians and gays. • Bisexual women are the most likely to have never had a cancer screening (mammogram or Pap test) compared to heterosexuals or lesbians. • Bisexual women have more risk factors for heart disease compared to heterosexuals or lesbians.

I is for Intersex –

Studies show an estimated one in 2,000 babies is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy and/or chromosome pattern that doesn’t seem to fit typical definitions of male or female. The terms used to describe the conditions that cause these variations are “intersex” or “DSD” (Differences of Sex Development). According to the Intersex Initiative, intersex people can also identify as members of the LGBTQ community though some may see their being born intersex as a medical condition or unique physical state.

J is for Rev. Janet Edwards –

Rev. Janet Edwards, was ordained in 1977 and stood trial in Nov. 2006 for performing a Presbyterian marriage ceremony for two women. Rev. Edwards was unanimously acquitted by The Presbyterian Church (USA) and came out as bisexual in 2012. Rev Edwards describes herself as “a bisexual woman who has always been capable of loving someone of either gender, but who joined in love and continues to build a life with a wonderful, caring man.” In June 2014, Rev. Edwards helped pass historic measures in The Presbyterian Church (USA) so that Presbyterian ministers can perform samesex marriages where it is legal. Originally from San Luis Obispo, California, Faith Cheltenham is the current President of BiNet USA, a national non-profit advocacy organization for bi people. Faith’s been an LGBT activist for 15 years and is also an accomplished writer, poet, and stand-up comic. Faith is mom to two-year-old Storm, step-mom to six-yearold Cadence, and wife to Matt in a very modern family in Los Angeles.

column

What story should the LGBT

community be paying attention to this week? SFGN Staff SFGN’s “Speak OUT” is a weekly feature giving a regular voice to South Florida LGBT leaders. Below are some of their answers:

Keep an eye on international anti-gay backlash in countries with marriage equality. In Spain, for example, Senator Luz Elena Sanín, a member of the ruling conservative Christian political party, has chosen to publicly blame Spain’s $1.3 trillion national debt on “subsidies to homosexuals.” — Toni Armstrong, Founder/Director of BLAST Women of WPB

Suicide attempts among transgender and gender non conforming adults is at 41 percent, which vastly exceeds the 4.6 percent of the overall U.S. population who report a lifetime suicide attempt, and is also higher than the 10-20 percent of lesbian, gay and bisexual adults who report ever attempting suicide.” — Anthony Timiraos, CEO/President, OUR Fund

This past Sunday I enjoyed watching a large group of gay black men playing volleyball at Hagen Park in Wilton Manors. It reinforced that my wonderful Island City is extending its broadening its bridges and continuing to be a more welcoming safe space for all people. The recent tragedy in Ferguson, Missouri has helped the nation be reminded of racial inequality. As an LGBTQ community advocating diversity, we are hopefully engaging in dialogue to learn what we can do to help eradication racism and other forms of discrimination.” — Michael Rajner, community activist

lifestyle books “Hard Choices: A Memoir” by Hillary Rodham Clinton Terri Schlichenmeyer

$35.00 / $40.00 Canada 635 pages c.2014, Simon & Schuster Political ads have barely started appearing on TV, but you already have an inkling of your future choice. Sure, there are a few important questions you’d like answered from the candidate who gets your vote; for the most part, though, you’ve decided. Was it difficult to pick? Or, as in the new book by Hillary Clinton, will your decision in 2016 be one of those “Hard Choices”? Let’s be frank; you already know who Hillary Clinton is. I’m safe in assuming that, since she’s been politically around for decades, I can dispense with the usual biography – and that’s okay because, though “Hard Choices” is obviously deeply steeped in politics for the last three decades or so, Clinton includes smatterings of her personal life and those of her husband and daughter in her book. Along those lines, I imagine it would be difficult, if not impossible, for Clinton to avoid comparing her years as First Lady with what she did as Secretary of State – so you’ll find plenty of that. Many people she met as FLOTUS, for instance, were still in office years later, and Clinton writes warmly of friendships with Angela Merkel, Nelson Mandela, Dianne Feinstein, and others that carried through time. Clinton begins her book with her run for the presidency in 2008, her rivalry and “ultimate partnership and friendship” with President Obama, and her refusal to attack Sarah Palin during the campaign. About her decision to accept the Secretary of State appointment, she says “When your President asks you to serve, you should say yes.” It undoubtedly helped that she received advice from past Secretaries, including Henry Kissinger and Condi Rice.

Clinton remembers the difficulties with North Korea and Kim Jong Il’s misogyny, the loss of diplomat Richard Holbrooke in the midst of discussions with Afghanistan, what really happened the day bin Laden was killed, the delicate nature of negotiations between centuries-long enemies in the Middle East; and the “powder keg” that comes with any planned talks. And because, in “the 21st century, we’ve also had to pay attention to the emerging global challenges that affect everyone in our interdependent world,” Clinton writes about global warming, jobs, economic issues, and issues such as women’s rights, human trafficking, and LGBT issues. And Benghazi? Well, like most of “Hard Choices,” there’s very little here that you haven’t already heard before. It’s the same old line with a few inconsequential behindthe-scenes observations mixed in – which does not mean that this book is unreadable. Though it’s understandably filled with literary globe-hopping and a panoply of names that will scramble the brains of all but the most dedicated political-watcher, and though it’s widely rumored to have been ghost-written, there’s enough Clinton in it to be a delightful – albeit, a very long – read. So should you ---? I think so, especially if you’ve already signed a determined “Hillary for President” online pledge. Just be aware that “Hard Choices” isn’t bad, it isn’t great, and it probably isn’t going to change your mind.

Gay History 101 Pier Angelo

Important People: Alan Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954) was a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, computer scientist and mathematical biologist. He was highly influential in the development of computer science, providing a formalization of the concepts of “algorithm” and “computation” with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer. Turing is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. During World War II, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, Britain’s code-breaking center. He devised a number of techniques for breaking German ciphers, including an electromechanical machine that could find settings for the Enigma machine. Winston Churchill said that Turing made the single

biggest contribution to Allied victory in the war against Nazi Germany. Turing’s pivotal role in cracking intercepted coded messages enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis in several crucial battles. Turing was prosecuted for homosexuality in 1952, when such acts were still criminalized in the UK. He accepted treatment with estrogen injections (chemical castration) as an alternative to prison. Turing died in 1954 from cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined his death a suicide. On 10 September 2009, following an Internet campaign, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the British government for “the appalling way he was treated.” The Queen granted him a posthumous pardon on 24 December 2013.

Dates to Remember: In 1528 Spanish explorer Alvar Nunez made the earliest written account of effeminate Indians in Florida who “go about dressed as women and do women’s tasks.”

July 24, 2014 John Barrowman, actor and musician clasped the head of another man during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The openly gay Doctor Who actor hugged and kissed his male companion. It was an act that flew in the face of antihomosexual legislation in 42 out of the 53 Commonwealth countries represented at the games.

Showbiz: Philadelphia is a 1993 American drama film and one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to acknowledge HIV/ AIDS, homosexuality and homophobia. It was written by Ron Nyswaner, directed by Jonathan Demme and starred Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role, while the song “Streets of Philadelphia” by Bruce Springsteen won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Sinead O’Connor is one of the last living rebels in popular music. She stood alone in her convictions on the stage of SNL as she brazenly tore up a picture of the pope, then held the remains out to the camera. She was trying to bring attention to rampant child abuse in the Catholic Church. Shortly after, her albums were famously steamrolled in the streets of NYC, music career be damned. It took nearly two decades for society to painfully realize that her criticisms were correct. Her gifts for songwriting (see “Black Boys On Mopeds”, “Last Day Of Our Acquaintance”) were overshadowed by the controversy, as she continued to put out brilliant albums (Universal Mother). She was on the right side of history at the wrong time. Since the start or her music career, and with each LP, she has changed her sound radically. For example, she dropped an under-appreciated reggae album (Throw Down Your Arms in 2005) and an album of covers in 1992. Sinead reminds one of Prince (who penned her biggest hit “Nothing Compares To You”) in that Sinead does what Sinead wants, much to the dismay of many of her fans waiting for another “Lion And The Cobra.” I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss, her 10th studio album, comes again from a new

dimension, containing her most commercial sound thus far. At times, it feels like a watered down version of her former self. Her voice is filtered, layered and diminished as the socially conscience hyperaware rebel tries to break through. I recently caught her live show and can tell you that she still has unparalleled intensity and vocal control. Nearly every person in the venue including the staff were leaning in for her every utterance. “The Vishnu Room” is my favorite track on INBITB. It teases with what sounds like The Edge from U2, backing the aggressive beauty of a voice that influenced a generation of female musicians. “8 Good Reasons” is perhaps her most obvious biographical song to date. On “The Voice Of My Doctor” she is cheekily channeling Robert Smith channeling Jimmy Hendrix. An album favorite is “James Brown” as she coos over a funky baseline. O’Connor’s last album in 2012, How About You Be You and I Be Me had heaps of critical praise and she has needed a proper return to the world stage for a while. If there were a time for her to have a big comeback it would be now. I’m not convinced this will be the album to propel her to the top again, but either way, she is still The Boss.

2015 BMW i8 — Hello, Future I’ve driven the future. And the future is fast. Steve Siler

For the last four years, I, and much of the car world, have been waiting the arrival of the revolutionary 2015 BMW i8, which debuted as a tantalizing concept car in 2009 and even gave Tom Cruise a ride he’ll never forget in Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, in 2011. After what has seemed like an eternity, the car is finally ready to hit the streets, and BMW recently put me and a handful of other automotive media types behind the wheel of this radical new supercar, and—spoiler alert—it’s freakin’ amazing, and soooooo worth the wait! Is it worth $136K, though? We’ll get to that later. Let’s just look at it for a hot minute. While certain parts of the i8’s anatomy are clearly BMW—twin kidney grille, forward-leaning “shark nose”—the rest of the i8 establishes a whole new, future-tastic design language for BMW’s new “i” brand, where conventional stuff like fenders and bumpers give way to disjointed and, in some cases, floating elements. The hood vented in the middle extracts heat from the electric motor bay. The tail lamps look like light sculptures yet actually play a role in aerodynamics. And then there are those doors, which swing up like a swan spreading its wings—very dramatic. And alas, the car couldn’t get you more attention if you strapped a naked Zach Efron to the roof. The interior is no less fantastic, with a sweeping dashboard and multi-configurable instruments that switch from blue in what

I call “responsible” (Eco) driving modes to sinister red in “whoop-it-up” (ie: Sport) mode. Most switches including the iDrive controller and the stand-up infotainment screen are stock BMW pieces, but their arrangement here is super-futuristic. Materials and fit/finish are as near Bentleygrade, as you’d hope in a $136K car, with unvarnished carbon fiber in the doorsills (much of the car’s structure is, in fact, carbon fiber) and blue seatbelts that match the car’s standard blue exterior accents serving up some surprise and delight. Aaaand it gets better on the road. Interestingly, the i8’s two power sources—a pair of electric motors powering the front wheels, and a three-cylinder gas engine powering the rear—operate independently, effectively turning it into an all-wheeldrive sports car. In pure electric mode on a full battery charge, the i8 can drive without gas for over 20 miles before the gas engine jumps in to help. Or if you step hard enough on the go-pedal, the gas engine will kick in. In Sport mode, the gas engine is always on, making all of the i8’s 357 hp available to catapult you from zero to 60 mph in just four seconds. Handling is awesome, thanks to its very low center of gravity and sharp, responsive steering. And kudos to BMW for engineering brakes that regenerate a lot of energy without that weird tugging feeling endemic to electron-powered cars. The i8 isn’t perfect: Getting in and out over

those wide door sills takes some practice (especially after leg day at the gym); the windows leave about an inch of glass above the sill when lowered, making it impossible to hang your arm out on a beautiful day; and the trunk is tiiiiiiiny. And while it has two rear seats, you won’t want to put actual people back there, at least if you want to keep them as friends. Still, no such shortcomings can sour my love of this car. Here is a car with Porsche

moves, sci-fi styling, and, perhaps the best of all, an uncanny ability to wipe that smug grin of green superiority right off of a Tesla Model S driver’s face. At $135,700, its price is aspirational, but not ridiculous. There are many a Mercedes that cost more. There is so much high technology, so much thrust, so much efficiency and, of course, styling like nothing else on the road, that I think BMW could have priced it even higher.

Whether you’re refueling after your gym session, need an afternoon pick-me-up, or you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, you really don’t have any excuses for passing up JuiceBlendz in Wilton Manors. Tucked in the corner of the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, JuiceBlendz opens for breakfast at 9 a.m. — although you can get anything on the menu anytime of the day. By default, you will want a smoothie. Since all are made-to-order and with all fresh, natural ingredients, you probably shouldn’t leave without one. Start with the popular Strawberry Samba: strawberry, banana, skim milk, honey, and fat free frozen yogurt ($6). Or try the Marathoner: blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, honey, and orange juice ($5.75). Both are two of the most popular smoothies in the store. Need a tasty protein treat? smoothies. For $6.79 you get fresh spinach, banana, chocolate protein and vanilla almond milk. A green lite — kale, cucumber juice, and freshly squeezed apple juice — is available for $6.99. Both are great on your way home from your workout! The Wilton Manors location has a dozen different supplements, including a vegan protein. Add any powder to your drink for less than $2. Whatever you do, don’t overlook the food. All sandwiches and wraps are madeto-order, including the customer-favorite Kickin’ Chicken: homemade chicken salad, romaine lettuce, plum tomatoes and mango vinaigrette served on your choice of a wrap for $7.95. Feel free to ditch the wrap and have it as a salad. Like the drinks, all sandwiches are made with fresh ingredients. Another favorite among customers is the Turkey Club. For $8.95 you get sliced smoked turkey breast, melted Havarti cheese, tomatoes, and garlic spread atop fresh Ciabatta bread. The BLT — spread with a special chipotle sauce — is an absolute must. Sandwiches are assembled and toasted in front of your eyes so you can’t miss the freshness. If you’re not in the mood for a drink or a meal, this stop is great for self-serve frozen yogurt. With six different flavors and swirl options available, you can fill up a cup with your choice of dessert and any (or all!) of the 24 toppings available. The marshmallow sauce is calling your name! Breakfast sandwiches, like the bacon bagel sandwich and the garden bagel sandwiches, are available anytime you’d like. This store also offers specials, like any wrap and 20oz drink for $8.95. Ask about the SpotOn loyalty program, where you can earn $1 off smoothies and get notifications about all the store’s weekly specials. Burlesque Festival Brings “Sexy” Back to Fort Lauderdale J.W. Arnold Submitted Photo

estival producer Bambi le Fleur

Burlesque isn’t just for paunchy middleaged men in smoky dive bars anymore, promises Bambi la Fleur, producer of the First Annual Florida Burlesque Festival. On Friday, Sept. 5 and Saturday, Sept. 6, South Florida audiences will get a rare opportunity to witness the evolution of this sexy form of entertainment that was popular in vaudeville houses a century ago. La Fleur has assembled more than 40 of the leading performers in the industry for the performances at Fort Lauderdale’s Cinema Paradiso. “They’re hot or they’re funny or they’re both,” said la Fleur, who has traveled the world with her own act. “There’s literally something for everybody.” Performers include legends Dusty Summers, “Las Vegas’ only nude magician”; Holly Carol, “the sexy songbird of striptease”; the Jewish Schlep Sisters, Minnie Tonka and Darlinda Just Darlinda; and mistress of ceremonies Blanche DeBris, who will perform “The Sound of Music” in six minutes. South Florida was the perfect location for her first festival. During the 1940s and 50s, the Rat Pack singers frequented glitzy clubs in Miami Beach and Connie Francis put Fort Lauderdale on the map as a glamorous destination for the young and beautiful. There was even a Playboy Club, she said. “It seemed natural to do this in Florida” explained la Fleur, who has devoted more than 40 hours per week for the last year to the many details of organizing a world class festival. One of the festival’s headliners, Ophelia Flame, was inspired to try burlesque after visiting the Miss Exotic World Museum (now the Burlesque Hall of Fame) in Las Vegas.

“I was this Minnesota girl, but then I learned about all the greats—Sally Rand, Gypsy Rose Lee, Tempest Storm — and I knew I had found my tribe,” Flame said. “For me, working as a real gosh darn stripper, it was a wonderful experience. People want to portray that as women who are exploited or coerced, but I only do the good gigs I really want to do.” At 45, Flame is one of the mature performers, but she says her experience has only made her performers more alluring, because “sexy is subjective.” And burlesque isn’t just for straight men, either. A special treat for Fort Lauderdale audiences are special “boylesque” numbers from internationally-acclaimed performers Ray Gunn and Bazuka Joe, who la Fleur says have become “a wonderful addition to the burlesque movement” and opened the art form to women and gay men. La Fleur is particularly proud of her support from the gay community. She pointed out, “In my experience, the people who enjoy the shows most have been predominantly gay. Most of my friends are gay and I just happen to like gay men and they like me — they say I’m a lot of work. We share a love of glamour, color, respect for the female form and the costuming. For me it’s the most sincere form of flattery.” After a short pause, la Fleur pondered, “If I was a man, I’m sure I’d be a fabulous drag queen.” The First Annual Florida Burlesque Festival will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5 and Saturday, Sept. 6 at Cinema Paradiso, 503 SE 6th St. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $30 and $50 at FloridaBurlesqueFestival.com.

Lovable, loopy play is tailor-made for Mad Cat’s mania

The doggedness of a population determined to hold onto their land, no matter what, is illustrated beautifully--and hilariously---in Centralia, the current production from Mad Cat Theatre. The premise of Centralia is the stuff of a 1950s sci-fi flick, but it’s actually based on a true story. In 1962, a coal fire began in the town of Centralia, Penn. and has been burning underground ever since, making the area dangerous and unstable. Nearly 20 years later the residents became aware of the widespread damage and risk, and shortly after most residents took the government’s buyout offer and relocated. Most buildings were bulldozed, but some residents refused to leave, choosing instead to hang onto their homes and maintain their hometown. And that’s where the play “Centralia” begins. Written by London-based Superbolt Theatre, the play’s premise is that the remaining residents of Centralia---Jennyfer (Bonnie Sherman), Alistair (Troy Davidson), Norman (Theo Reyna) and a Musician (Steph Taylor)---have put together a show and taken it on the road to raise money and awareness about their situation and the history of their town. What follows is an inventive loopy, wildly funny hour of entertainment that includes storytelling, interpretive dance and tales

acted out with action figures. One of the best moments is when the cast dances to Cher’s “Believe?” a segment made even funnier by Reyna’s lack of rhythm. Then, there’s the Shoe Dance, which features three pairs of orange sneakers, a tribute to real-life Todd Domboski who encountered a sinkhole in Centralia in 1981. Those two chapters alone are worth the price of admission. But all that wackiness is grounded with real heart, and Davidson, Reyna and Sherman do a terrific job of infusing each moment of Centralia with the emotion of three people who are brought together through shared disaster and their devotion to their hometown. In “Centralia,” director Paul Tei has found an apt theatre piece for his artistic vision. Tei’s “Centralia” is an immersive experience that begins even before the cast takes the stage. His wink-to-the-audience set is like a theme park ride, setting the scene for a story so bizarre it has to be true. Imaginative, goofy and poignant, Centralia is one of the highlights of South Florida’s summer theatre season. Centralia runs through Aug. 31 at the Sand Box at Miami Theatre Center, 9816 NE 2 Ave., Miami Shores. For more information, visit MadCatTheatre.org.
