NC Attorney General Blasted For Support Of Gay Marriage A Durham attorney running for governor in 2016 says it’s logically inconsistent for expected gubernatorial candidate Roy Cooper to oppose election and marriage laws while defending them in court as North Carolina’s attorney general. Ken Spaulding said Wednesday that Cooper

should appoint an independent counsel to represent the state in lawsuits challenging the election law and a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage or recuse himself from the cases. Spaulding and Cooper are both Democrats. Cooper has said his office has shown it can successfully defend the state in litigation

no matter what his personal views are. Spaulding says Cooper’s decision to remain on the cases is costing taxpayers additional money. Republican Gov. Pat McCrory hired private counsel to defend the election law because of Cooper’s public statements about the law. From the Associated Press

Man Found Guilty in Daniel Zamudio’s Murder Four Chilean men have been found guilty of firstdegree murder for killing a gay man and carving swastikas into his body. Daniel Zamudio’s murder set off a national debate about hate crimes in Chile that led Congress to pass an anti-

discrimination law. Judge Juan Carlos Urrutia said Thursday that Patricio Ahumada Garay, Alejandro Angulo Tapia, Raul Lopez Fuentes and Fabian Mora Mora are guilty of a crime of “extreme cruelty” and “total disrespect for human life.”

Two Charged in Bullied Girl’s Suicide It was a cold-hearted online post that a Florida sheriff said hastened the arrest of two girls, aged 12 and 14, in the bullyingsuicide case of 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd repeated the older girl’s Facebook comment almost word for word at a news conference Tuesday. “‘Yes, I bullied Rebecca and she killed herself but I don’t give a …’ and you can add the

last word yourself,” Judd said. But in an interview with ABC News that aired Wednesday, a couple identified as the 14-year-old’s parents said their daughter would never write something like that and that the girl’s Facebook page had been hacked. Authorities in central Florida said Rebecca was tormented online and at school by as many as 15 girls before she climbed a tower at

The judge said the attackers also burned Zamudio with cigarettes, beat him with glass bottles and broke his right leg with a heavy stone before they abandoned him in a park in the Chilean capital on Oct. 3, 2012. The sentence will be read on Oct. 28.

an abandoned concrete plant and hurled herself to her death Sept. 9. But the two girls arrested were primarily the ones who bullied Rebecca, the sheriff said. They have been charged with stalking and released to their parents. Rebecca is one of at least a dozen or so suicides in the past three years that were attributed at least in part to cyberbullying.
