outh Florida Gay News presents to you our second annual neighborhood guide to ‘The Drive,’ capturing the heart and soul of Wilton Manors, one of the nation’s leading gaycentric communities. If you come to this island city, surrounded by rivers, believe it or not, you get more than our annual canoe race. You are in the epicenter of one of America’s leading gayborhoods, where gay men and women congregate daily in boutique businesses, local restaurants, and popular nightclubs. If you are looking for a night out or a place to eat, a gay lawyer or lesbian realtor, there is a good chance you will find one in this guide or walking down our ‘Drive.’ Once a trailer park and a retirement community, Wilton Manors is now a thriving, emerging urban village. A colorful collage of pedestrians and residents come together each June for Stonewall, and we celebrate a day that is precious and prideful. We come together to acknowledge just how far the LGBT community in America has come. We see it everyday locally, and we want our community to count, our lives to matter. After the parades and parties are over, this guide will still be a keeper for tourists and travelers seeking to learn more about our community. Carry it in your back pocket and share it with your friends. This guide and our community is a year older, but we still have a song in our hearts and a smile on our lips. We have controversy and color, bite and a bark. We are here, and we are heard. But life is not handed to us on a silver platter. We have to work for it.
