President’s Message -Ernesto R. Perez, D.M.D.

To quote Buddha: “Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.” As simple (and somewhat humorous) as that quote may be, I find it very applicable to all of us today.

This year is quickly coming to an end, and most offices are busy finishing treatment plans for patients before their insurance benefits end. Our families may also be in a rush getting gifts for those we love and planning get-togethers with close friends. It is a laundry list of things to get done before January 1 and, in my case, throwing a wedding as well.

But, I would like to take an opportunity to reflect and give thanks. I want to thank all the members that make our association so unique. I thank all of you, and very significantly, those in leadership positions who take time out of their demanding schedules to contribute to the profession. I also wish to say “thank you” to our executive director, executive assistant, and membership coordinator, for without these three highly talented individuals, the SFDDA would not be the powerhouse district that it is.

I personally would like to thank God for all the people who have blessed my life. Giving thanks is a rewarding practice because recognizing others is to realize how gracious God is, and how blessed our lives are. With the pandemic slowly coming to an eventual end, life and the importance of health cannot be more underappreciated or overstated.

Let us all take time to acknowledge those who have passed, and be gracious for our own health and wellbeing. So, as we bid adieu to this year and welcome the new one, please remember to be gracious and give thanks. May God continue to bless this association, its members, and their families for years to come.

In My Opinion - But NO, it’s Yolanda’s Opinion Richard A. Mufson, DDS, Editor This page is usually reserved for the Editor, but I will write the editorial for this issue. It’s not that Dr. Mufson could not do it, but we’re giving him a little break.

So hence, I’ve got this one, and I’m going to write about him. I don’t think we thank Dr.Mufson enough for what he does for the association. For years, he has lectured our members on the statemandated courses, including the newest courses.

We’ve had the pleasure of hearing him play at our past Women’s events and providing us with Karaoke at our socials. He even schleps his sound equipment to North Dade-Miami Beach affiliate meetings for the speaker’s use. We are looking forward to having him DJ for the “Havana Nights” dinner dance in December.

We are lucky to have him in our district, and I wanted him to know how much we appreciate all Dr. Mufson wrote and played the music that we that he does for us. He may not like that I’ve put hear on the SFDDA podcast, “Ain’t That the Tooth.” him in the spotlight like this, but it’s better to ask And he was a guest on the show, along with Dr. for forgiveness. We want to hear your story! Be a guest on the podcast! We have enjoyed bringing you exciting guests with fascinating stories about their work, lives, and challenges for the past year. It's been a great way to get to know each other a little better. We have even had people tell us that it was nice to hear they weren't the only ones dealing with life's ups and downs. Others have enjoyed the non-dental hobbies of some of our members, such as Drs. Richard Mufson and Michael Ragan, who shared stories of their lives within the world of music.

We have learned more about the legislative process and dealing with insurance issues with Joe Anne Hart and Casey Stoutamire from the FDA. Their expertise opened up a world of information so crucial for practicing dentists and those in dental school.

Once we knew that we would be heading back to our regular in-person meetings with our affiliate societies, our officers, Drs. Ernesto Perez, John Aylmer, Tim Franklin, and Gabriel Quinones, came to the podcast to talk about the fantastic events planned for the incomng year and how much they were looking forward to shaking hands and breaking bread together again.

Our next episode features Dr. Nicole McGrath-Barnes, recipient of the 2020 Lucy Hobbs Humanitarian award for her work with children in underserved communities.

It has been wonderful to have students from Nova telling their accounts of what it is like to be a dental student, their hopes and fears upon graduation, and how and where to start looking for work and associateships. Dr. Alan Friedel and his associate, Dr. Alejandra Zambrano, talked to us about how the process of finding the right associate is a two-way street, where both parties should ask many questions. This episode is one of our most listened-to episodes.

When Dr. Cesar Sabates was elected President-Elect of the American Dental Association, we invited him and his campaign crew to talk about running a campaign during a pandemic. Because of the cancelation of most dental meetings and travel prohibited, all of the campaign speeches and Q&A were via "Zoom." This new dynamic changed the landscape of running for office at the ADA. Other popular topics include the work-life balance of members who choose to own a practice, raise a family After the pandemic, we had to accommodate many and serve in leadership. Drs. Mariana Velazquez and changes, especially as we returned to work and tried to Irene Marron-Tarrazzi made it sound fantastic and make our worlds normal again. Both Drs. Oscar Peguero doable. Dr. Marta Gainza showed us that you could have and Michael Eggnatz gave a remarkable account of what a career in dentistry and be an innovator – creating a new it was like to return to practice and how the American business that solved a problem in the dental office. This demic also caused us to move further and faster into that conversation is a great way to get to know the E.D.s and world. how they run the day-to-day.

We covered the joy of volunteering, from the Mission of Mercy to Donated Dental Services with Dr. Michael Eggnatz, Dr. Dan Gesek and R. Jai Gillium. Further along the theme of volunteering, we had a conversation with Dr. Theresa Cheng, winner of the ADA Humanitarian Award. Dr. Cheng treats combat veterans and their families pro-bono and encourages others to volunteer and see a combat vet in their office. Their stories are fascinating and insightful.

If you've missed any of our episodes, I ask you to take a moment and start listening, and I promise you will enjoy them.

There are more to come, but the podcast is about you, our members. Don't be shy if you have a story or an idea. We'd love to have you on the show. Just call the office at (305) 667-3647 or email southfloridadistrict@gmail.com
