President’s Message Beatriz E. Terry, D.D.S., M.S.

I am sad to report that my year as your SFDDA president has come to an end. I cannot believe how fast this year went by! However, I am happy to report that I leave you in great hands with your incoming president, Dr. Jeannette Peña-Hall and the rest of our executive council. This year would not have been as successful if not for the help of ALL of them. I would also like to express a special “thank you” to Dr. Rodrigo Romano, our treasurer, who kept us on track and “in the black." In addition, our hard-working, yet tiny, staff at the SFDDA office, Ms. Yolanda Marrero and Jackie Quintero, managed to keep up with me, and my high energy. THANKS!! Your SFDDA has been very busy in the last couple of months. Our participation, for a second year, in the Mercedes Benz Corporate Run in April was a great success. We had a larger number of participants this year, very nice t-shirts, and we gave out toothbrushes & toothpaste to promote public awareness on dental health. Special thanks go out to Yolanda Marrero for designing the shirts, Patterson Dental for donating the brushes, and Platinum Sponsor Total Bank for their contribution. Please consider joining us next year or making a donation to the SFDDA Foundation to help fund these events. In May, we held the annual Women Dentists Reception at Cuba Ocho Gallery on SW 8th street, which also proved to be a great event. I would like to especially thank our sponsors and those who donated wonderful door prizes and raffle gifts. Please look at all the photos of these and other events in this issue.

On the political front, I attended this year's Dentist Day on the Hill (DDOH) in April in Tallahassee. Along with a group of other South Florida dentists, I had the opportunity of meeting with various state district senators and representatives. We discussed issues important to dentistry and were seen and heard throughout the Capitol. FDA even offered free dental treatment to needy children in the area through a mobile dental unit. Consider joining us next year! I had the privilege of attending, for the first time, in May, the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. This meeting, like DDOH, involved meeting with Florida senators, state representatives and/or their staff, to discuss issues important to dentistry on the national level. I must say, dentists are well respected at our nation's Capitol, and I look forward to attending again. Upcoming events include a free CE course on coding in May, and our annual Florida National Dental Convention (FNDC) in Orlando this June.I hope you plan on attending one or both. I leave my presidency fulfilled. I feel I have accomplished all that I had planned - and then some. I only hope that our association continues to grow and gain strength. And finally, THANK YOU for your continued membership and loyalty to our SFDDA! We could not accomplish what we do without you.

Rich’s Ramblings The Current State of Organized Dentistry More Questions than Answers Richard Mufson, D.D.S. Editor Haven’t we had this conversation before? How many times in recent years have we heard the same all-too-familiar questions - at numerous dental meetings, strategic planning sessions, in phone conversations, and at other mutual venues we have shared – regarding the current state or perceived well-being of organized dentistry? And among those on the list: Why is our membership steadily declining in recent years? Why has there been what has seemed like an infectious loss of interest in attending meetings and other organized events as compared to previous years? The list goes on: Why has the number of local affiliate societies in our South Florida district dwindled from six to a mere three? Why have affiliate membership roles declined from well over a hundred in years past to less than seventy? Or sixty? Or fifty? Or...who knows?

lost in space, as you are reading this.) The answers to these commonly asked questions have also seemed as predictable and repetitive to us by now. In many cases, they seem based on speculation and conjecture. In other cases, they are simply based on the hard realities of every day life. They may also depend quite literally on whom you choose to ask. The first and foremost of answers to help explain all this, most often seemingly put forth by those who have been around the longest, usually goes something like this: “It is a generational phenomenon.” It has been stated, so many countless times over, usually by the post-war baby boomer dentists among us, and/or their dentist parents, that upon graduation from dental school and starting a prac-

- Why have so many of us preferred to remain at home...rather than choose to connect with fellow professionals at local dental meetings or at other events within organized dentistry? -

Why has it been so challenging of late to keep even our three affiliate societies up and running, as they have struggled to find new members, or find new volunteers to serve as line officers? Is it possible we may be at risk in the very near future of losing our local affiliate societies altogether? Why have so many of us preferred to remain at home, pulled away by other aspects of life, rather than choose to connect with fellow professionals at local dental meetings or at other events within organized dentistry? Why has no other team in NFL history been able to duplicate the Miami Dolphins’ undefeated 1972 season? (Sorry, I just wanted to see if you were paying attention, or just 4

tice of dentistry – it was simply unheard of, or unfathomable, for anyone to consider not belonging to organized dentistry. Attending local dental meetings, while interacting with, and enjoying the camaraderie of, others in the same profession, took place with little thought of any other options. Belonging to the ADA, for the great majority of those comprising these two (or more) prior generations, is not unlike mom, apple pie, or belonging to one’s local church or synagogue. In other words, not belonging was - simply put - not an option. Then came the children and grandchildren of the continued on next page

baby boomers - generations X and Y (or GenX and GenY, as they are sometimes referred to), generally thought of as being born within the general time frame of the mid-1960’s to the year 2000. Although challenging for many observers to rigidly define and categorize these groups or cohorts by precise time frames or stereotypical cultural differences, many have taken note of sociologic studies suggesting that this latter group of younger professionals, as compared to their post-war and baby boomer predecessors, are different in a number of respects. One difference singled out more frequently than others is that of being more self-absorbed, and choosing to focus more on their own internal world, rather than the one revolving around them. “Generation Me” has also been used when referring to those within GenY and those within the latter part of GenX.

ent that meeting via email, phone, and/or video conference would be more preferable than traveling to a meeting in person.

Another major difference setting those in the younger generations apart from their more senior counterparts is no doubt related to the huge advances in technology they have so universally embraced and utilized. Spending time with friends on Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Instagram, or listening to Spotify and Pandora, has taken precedence over wanting to travel outside the home or office to meet and converse with others faceto-face. How many of us have noticed that when meeting with friends, or even having dinner with family at home or at a restaurant, others in the room or around the table are often more involved in interacting with friends on their smart phones or other personal devices rather than with those of us present in the same room?

And finally – the one answer which seems to be the most common denominator, or the great equalizer as it were, in this conversation: “They just don’t see the value in belonging to organized dentistry.”

Many in the younger generation (boy, I am feeling very old as I an writing this!) have also made it readily appar-

Other answers to the aforementioned questions have had no relation to age or technology. A varied number of pressures and stressors taking place within many of our personal lives – whether related to the economy and finances, the challenges of raising children and other family issues – are clearly different than the post-war Ozzie and Harriet and Ward and June Cleaver households many of us knew in years past. The net effect of this, many presume, is that we are choosing to place an ever increasing percentage of our focus and time on the personal, rather than the professional, aspects of our lives when away from the office.

“But wait a minute,” many of us respond. “Do they really not see the value in the tremendous legislative and lobbying effort put forth over the years, with positive results benefiting all of us in dentistry – members and non-members alike - nor the benefits and savings enjoyed from the myriad of group insurance plans negotiated on our behalf, nor the numerous journals and other publications made available to members, nor the vast world of research and other information at our disposal via the ADA Library archives, nor the advocacy delivered on our behalf in areas of coding and nomenclature, or holding insurance carriers accountable for legal and ethical practice (as in the continued on page 7

victorious court decisions we celebrated a few years ago when the ADA sued Aetna, Cigna and two other major carriers for alleged racketeering), all the excellent continuing education programs made available to us (and the list truly goes on...)?” Really? Do they not see and appreciate all that? Or is it that they really know it exists but choose not to acknowledge seeing it?

from close to 80% of all practicing dentists at one time, to somewhere below 65%, and inching ever closer toward the 50-60% mark. Is it possible we may one day resemble the American Medical Association, which represents below 20% of all US physicians, and who as a group have virtually zero voice or advocacy in the every day practice of their chosen profession? The term “organized medicine” essentially does not exist. Will the term, “organized dentistry” one day be relegated to a memory from the past?

For many others in recent years who have chosen not to belong, another angle is at work. Yes, I know, I get it – it is simply easier not to shell out the thou- Or, do we simply have to face the fact that, in life,

- For many others in recent years who have chosen not to belong...it is simply easier not to shell out the thousand plus dollars each year, but yet still reap many of the same benefits as those who literally and figuratively “pay their dues.” sand plus dollars each year, but yet still reap many of the same benefits as those who literally and figuratively “pay their dues.” However, the largest unanswered question looming now before us, and perhaps the most significant yet: Are we in danger of altogether losing the entity of ‘organized dentistry’ as we have come to know it? Our membership ranks on a national and state level have precipitously dropped in recent years

“things change” around us, whether we like it or not. As one of many countless examples, who ever thought that the one place where we could make a phone call with some expectation of privacy, or if you happened to be Clark Kent – to take off your suit and tie and jump into action as Superman, would also one day cease to exit? But alas, we come back to more questions than answers. By the way, haven’t we had this conversation before?

Dr. D r. Melisa M Christian, Christian, a Fortress Fort ress r Dentist. Dentist. I live in Dallas, Texas. There is wonderful opportunity here, and diversity. There is also a really great running community. I practice in a general dentistry office with the most supportive and energetic staff. I became interested in dentistry after meeting a dentist who inspired me by the way he made his patients feel so comfortable. I recharge by running. It’s an avenue to find your inner strength and do things you never thought possible. I compete in marathons and triathlons, and I also volunteer coach. In 2008, I competed in the Olympic Marathon Trials in Boston. I love teaching. I’ve taught second year students at Baylor College of Dentistry how to design and fabricate removable prosthodontics. It was an amazing experience! I’d love to teach again when I have more time. I hope to make a difference in my patients’ lives. Dentistry is more than restorations, it’s caring for people. Making patients comfortable and helping them trust me is just as important as making their smile beautiful. I recommend Fortress professional liability coverage. I chose Fortress after discussing it with fellow faculty at Baylor. The coverage is broad, and I feel comfortable knowing that I have a trusted provider.

Over 14,000 dentists trust Fortress with their professional liability insurance. When you choose Fortress Insurance Company for your professional liability coverage, you can be confident that your practice is protected. We are owned and operated by dentists and only insure dentists. Aggressive claims defense, valuable risk management and outstanding customer service are why dentists all over the country have selected Fortress. Our local agents are responsive and knowledgeable too. To get Fortress protection* call Ron Backer at Gracey-Backer, 800-272-6055. Tell him Dr. Christian sent you. Fortress Insurance is owned and operated by dentists.

Some Thoughts on Our World of “IT” My Avatar Ever since the “Information Age” (also known by a host of other names: Computer Age, Digital Age, Age of Information Technology [“IT”], New Media Age) came into our lives – we seem busier than ever! Our new world of high-tech communication and our social media devices were supposed to make life better, and simpler.

-Yolanda Marrero, Executive Director ing their dog outside in the wind, or scolding rowdy kids while on the call, or sitting at a busy restaurant, and you know what that means.

I am neither from the older, nor the new, generation. I sit uncomfortably in between. I am too old to want to keep up with the new technologies and too young to not keep up with the new technoloI don’t think it has, really. Sure, we stay in contact, gies. I like not having to lug a laptop to a meeting, our lives are open books on the internet, we share when I can whip out my tablet or e-reader. I like to photos instantly, and we create events on-line, we get email on my phone and keep up with silly send emails, text messages and tweets, and in things like my friends’ latest Facebook posts. But turn, expect instant answers and results. on the other hand, I really like being surrounded by my friends and colleagues at meetings, especially

I rather like seeing the discomfort on the faces of others... just as Iike seeing the look of accomplishment when we come to agreement and solidarity on a given subject.” “Let’s meet by phone, by teleconference, by video conference.” But wait - I need a camera…and I can’t really see the agenda, or the faces of my fellow meeting attendees filling the screen. Sheesh! What happened to the days of us gathering, in person, in one place, where I can shake your hand when we meet, and when I can look at your face as you raise your hand in protest, agreement, point of order, or whatever it is you are going to say? I rather like seeing the discomfort on the faces of others when a meeting goes “out of order,” just as I like seeing the look of accomplishment when we come to agreement and solidarity on a given subject. After all, it so much better reflects the human side of whom and what we are. I kind of miss all that on a phone conference, you know, not to mention that someone is always walk-

when we do not get together that often and these are the few opportunities we have to actually see each other, or meet someone new. Yes, meeting in person slows us down for just a moment in our lives. But, it also improves our oral communication and helps bring everyone to light, unlike electronic meetings where some people tend to fade into cyber-space. As our affiliate society meetings now wind down and close up shop until the fall, as we install new officers for the incoming year, and start to make plans for the future - let’s not forget that we still have beating hearts inside of us, and it is so nice to actually sit across from one another at an actual (not virtual) “live” meeting, where we can see each other’s faces, feel the camaraderie, and as I also truly believe - accomplish so much more. 15
