St. Francis College St. Francis College was founded in 1859 as St. Francis Academy by a group of newly arrived Franciscan Brothers from Ireland. The Brother’s mission was to educate young men from working-class families in the Brooklyn Diocese. St. Francis Academy provided a sound education with a rigorous curriculum and personal support, all for a modest tuition, characteristics that endure today. In 1884, St. Francis College received its Charter from New York State establishing a literary college which could award diplomas, honors, and degrees. In 1926, St. Francis College built a larger campus near its original site in Cobble Hill, where it remained until the 1960s when the College relocated to its current site on Remsen Street in Brooklyn Heights. The new location and opening the College’s doors up to women for the first time led to an influx of students from all five boroughs of New York City and beyond, doubling the student population. The cornerstone of the St. Francis College experience is academics. All students complete a core curriculum that offers a foundation for intellectual and professional growth; once completed, they choose from one of 74 majors, many in the liberal arts and others geared to specific professions, included a five year combined Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in Accounting. An honors program serves students of high achievement and a broad scholarship program supports those who are likely to perform well academically. An NCAA-Division I institution, St. Francis College offers students the opportunity to play for any of 19 varsity men’s and women’s athletic teams, including its men’s basketball team, whose program is among the oldest in New York City. Teams compete in many wellknown New York City venues such as the USTA National Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open, Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island and Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field. Today, first-generation college-goers and students of all backgrounds are among St. Francis College’s diverse population. Its CatholicFranciscan heritage, central to life at the College, allows faculty and administrators to embrace, support, and encourage all students as they pursue fulfillment of their dreams.

Athletic Mission Statement

The mission of the St. Francis College Department of Athletics reflects much of what is the mission of the College for all of its students. As a College founded upon Franciscan traditions, the promotion of the academic, spiritual, moral, mental and physical welfare of its students is at the core of St. Francis College’s mission. The Department of Athletics, as a component of the College, seeks to further promote the same values and welfare among the student-athletes. The Department of Athletics seeks to attain its mission through the creation of a healthy atmosphere were every student-athlete is treated as an individual. Further, the Department of Athletics is fully committed to fostering an atmosphere where no studentathlete will face discrimination based upon gender, race, religion, or any other factor. The Department particularly encourages the participation of female student-athletes and minority student-athletes. St. Francis College does not define the success of its athletic program solely by the won/lost records of its teams. Rather, the primary focus is a concern for student athlete welfare and personal development. In a truly successful program, the student-athletes display and develop leadership qualities, excel in the classroom and in the competitive arena, conclude their careers as student-athletes with a degree, and take their places in society as professionals in their chosen fields, all the while bringing credit to themselves and to St. Francis College. To achieve these goals of success, the Department of Athletics is committed to providing a high quality education, both on and off the field. The College provides its student-athletes with a system of resources and services, including facilities and equipment, quality coaching, the best medical care possible, and academic support. St. Francis College views its athletic program as a component of the educational process, and it is therefore compatible with the College’s mission of enhancing the intellectual, social, and spiritual growth of the student-athlete. Further, the College supports and encourages the involvement of all students in the work of the Department of Athletics, whether it be as a competing student-athlete, a participation in intramural and recreational sport, or through attending athletic events and supporting the teams and student-athletes who are representing the College. St. Francis College and the Department of Athletics are firmly committed to the highest standards of sportsmanship and fair play, as these values are a fundamental aspect of the College’s educational mission. It fully abides by the principles and regulations set by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Northeast Conference.

T

he Terriers enter the 2009-2010 campaign with a fresh new outlook and demeanor in hopes of forgetting their 4-25 season a year ago. With the addition of several exciting newcomers along with five returners, Coach Brenda Milano and her staff believe that they can vie for a Northeast Conference championship.

“Our motto for this upcoming season is one mind, one goal and one team!” said head coach Brenda Milano, entering her seventh season at the helm of the Terriers. “This team has the potential to do something very special if everyone continues to work hard in practice.” Coach Milano goes on to say that, “When adversity occurs we need to learn to lean on each other, pick each other up and help push each other through. We want to bring St. Francis a Northeast Conference championship. With thirteen girls on the roster and my wonderful coaching staff, we have the caliber to compete with anyone in the Northeast Conference. A big key for us will be maintaining our composure and continuing to improve our chemistry throughout the season.” There were a few highlights from last season. The Terriers ended a three-year drought in

the “Battle of Brooklyn,” as they defeated Long Island University. A month later, with a last second free-throw, St. Francis stunned the 2008 Northeast Conference Champions, Robert Morris Colonials.

Galandakova was able to change the game with her defensive presence on numerous occasions. Two new additions to the frontcourt to help Williams and Galandakova are Kim Snauwaert and Autumn Lau.

The frontcourt this season starts with Kendra Williams, a 6’4” senior, will be patrolling the paint for the Terriers. The Raleigh, North Carolina native has displayed flashes of brilliance during her career. Last season proved to be Williams’ best, as she recorded nineteen double-digit scoring performances. In addition to setting a new career-high in points with twenty; (accomplished on two separate occasions; vs. Albany on December 19th and at Central Connecticut on February 21st) Williams added five double-double performances. Kendra finished the year averaging 11.4 points and 6.7 rebounds a contest. Coach Milano will look to her senior forward as the focal point of the offense. “Kendra’s ability to bring strength and athleticism on both ends of the court will be an important starting point for us,” added Coach Milano. Barbora Galandakova, a 6’7” junior post player from the Czech Republic, will be looked upon to continue her defensive dominance while increasing her offensive production. Last season in limited action,

Snauwaert, a 6’1” forward from Roeselare, Belgium, has been a member of the Belgium National Team for the past three years. This past summer, the team finished second in the U18 European Championships. “Kim is excited to play ball in the United States” coach Milano offered. “She is very athletic and has a tremendous work ethic. Kim fits very nicely into both our offensive and defensive schemes. She runs the court well, has good range on her shot and is very smart on the defensive end. She will need to adjust to the physical nature of basketball in the United States.” Lau, a 5’10” small forward from Mt. Wolf, Pennsylvania, attended Northeastern High School. Last season, she was named YAIAA Division II Player of the Year. She averaged 24.1 points per game while establishing herself as the all-time leading scorer for the Northeastern girls’ program, with 2,301 career points. She had four 30-point performances while helping her school to

a third-place finish in the District 3 and to the second round of the PIAA Class AAA tournament. “Autumn will be an impact player for us.” Milano says. “Her and her sister, Amber, took a program that was on the decline and turned them into a power-house. Autumn is a versatile player who could hit the three-pointer and create scoring opportunities off the dribble. Her free-throw shooting will be an asset since she does a nice job of draw and finishing with contact. We will look to exploit any opportunity we have to score from the free throw line.” The Terriers are replacing a trio of starters in the backcourt as well. Kara Ayers, Kristen Miah and Karla Babica have graduated after enjoying tremendous careers. The Terriers will look to speedy junior guard Shannon Gantt to provide instant offense. In back-toback contests last season, Gantt recorded a career-high 11 points while playing in just twenty-one games. Senior shooting guard Melissa Weithman will be asked to step into more of a leadership role in her senior year. Weithman, who connected on twelve three-pointers last season, can be a threat from deep beyond the arc. The Silver Spring, Maryland native also showed a nice touch from the free throw line as she finished the 08-09 campaign a perfect 6-of-6 (100%) from the charity stripe. After sitting out last season after her transfer from the University of New Hampshire, junior Jacinda Williams will be looking to make a name for herself in the Northeast Conference. While at UNH, Williams saw action in 29 games. She contributed 4.0 points per game and distributed 48 assists. According to coach Milano, “In a group that has junior transfers and a new group of players; Jacinda is ready to step-up and grab the reigns of this team. She has the versatility to play both guard positions. When she is playing the off-guard, Jacinda will be run off screens. She has the ball handling skills to create for herself and her teammates. She has a scorer’s mentality and will be an important piece of the puzzle for us.” Joining the revamped backcourt are Tiara Dunson, Kayla Williams, Amber Lau and Stefanie Bingham. Dunson comes to St. Francis from Merced College in California. The 5’9” point guard, originally hails from Tracy, California where she attended West High School. Last season, Merced finished 2nd in their conference as Tiara led the team in scoring (9.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg). She was named to All-Central Valley Conference First Team. “Tiara reminds me a lot of Kristen Miah,”

18

coach Milano offers. “She has floor-general instincts but is more offensive minded. Her height creates defensive matchup problems for our opponents. Her work ethic, leadership and floor-knowledge will have an immediate impact of this team.” In high school Tiara was awarded numerous honors including Female Athlete of the Year, All Tri-City League First Team, and Defensive Player of the Year. Kayla Williams is a 5’6 shooting guard from Iowa Western Community College. Williams is originally from Humble, Texas where she attended Humble High School. Last season, Williams averaged 15.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and shot 36% from beyond the arc. She led the team in scoring and was named to the All-Region XI First Team. Kayla set the record for most three-point field goals made (163) in a career and in a single season (85). Kayla gives St. Francis another player who can put the ball in the basket as she dropped a career-high 31 points in a game last season. At Humble High School, Williams showed continued improvement as she was named to the All-District Honorable Mention team, then All-District Second Team and finally District’s Most Valuable Player. Kayla was named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star Team. Coach Milano when asked about Kayla mentioned that, “Kayla is the 1st Mid-West player we have brought to the Heights. She is a hard working, athletically gifted player. She is very enthused to bring her talent to the East Coast. Kayla has amazing range from the beyond the arc and can penetrate through the defense to find scoring chances in the paint.” Lau, a 5’9” guard from Mt. Wolf, Pennsylvania, is the older of the Lau twins, born a minute before sister, Autumn. Amber is shooting guard and also attended Northeastern. She averaged 17.4 points per game and was named to the YAIAA Division II First Team. “Amber was an enormous part of Northeastern’s success in turning around its program. As freshmen, I expect both Amber and Autumn to have immediate an impact on our program.” When asked about if a sibling rivalry would exist, coach Milano ensures that “there is no rivalry. In fact, they both are tremendous shooters, crafty ball handlers and extremely unselfish. They do a wonderful job of creating opportunities for themselves, each other and their teammates. They work extremely hard and compliment each other’s style.” Bingham is a 5’8” combo guard, from Willingboro, New Jersey. She attended Willingboro High School where she competed

as a two-sport athlete (basketball and tennis). On the hardwood, she averaged 22.3 points and six rebounds per game. Her accolades include being named Burlington County Player of the Year for the 2008-2009 season, and the All-South Jersey and AllBurlington First Teams. During Stefanie’s career, Willingboro won the Group II State Championship and captured the Liberty Division Championship. “Stefanie, in my opinion, was a steal in the late-signing period. She is fearless, strong, athletic guard. Her explosiveness and speed with an pleasant addition on both ends of the floor,” Coach Milano adds. The Schedule The Terriers will open the 2009-2010 slate on the road on November 13th against local rival Manhattan. St. Francis will have their first home contest against Hofstra on Nov. 18th at 7:00 pm. The team will then head Upstate to square of against UAlbany on Nov. 23rd. St. Francis will host two more games to end the month of November, first, against Fairfield the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 25th) and Army (Nov. 30) at the Pope Physical Education Center. Seventh Season ‚ Hometown: Boonton, N.J. · Alma Mater: Wagner College, Seton Hall University

renda Milano enters her seventh season as head coach of the St. Francis College women’s basketball program. In her first season, she led the 20032004 Terriers to an eight win season. The next season, the wins steadily increased to ten, while guiding St. Francis to the 2005 Northeast Conference Quarterfinals. It was the Terriers first appearance since 1999. Milano’s coaching style helped transform a new atmosphere in Brooklyn Heights as the 2006-07

22

season proved to be a year to remember. Milano’s bunch recorded a 13-18 overall record, her most successful season to date. St. Francis would enter the Northeast Conference Tournament as the eight seed, taking on the Long Island University Blackbirds, the tournaments top seed. The Terriers would pull out the upset, as it was the first time that the school has qualified for the semifinals as well as being the only # 8 seed to upset the # 1 seed in Northeast Conference Tournament history.

Despite having three starters on the injured list, the 2007-08 Terriers were resilient and made it back to Northeast Conference tournament. Last season, Milano was able to achieve personal milestones in her coaching career. The Terriers ended a three-year drought in the Battle of Brooklyn as they defeated Long Island University, giving Milano her 35th Northeast Conference victory. A month later, with a last second free-throw, St. Francis would stun 2008 Northeast Conference

Champions, Robert Morris, giving Coach Milano her 50th career victory, the most wins by a St. Francis College women’s head coach. Milano gained her early coaching experience at Northeastern University as a graduate assistant and at Seton Hall University where she earned a master’s degree in sports management. Before coaching, Milano spent time at Integrated Sports International, sports marketing firm where she put to work her B.S. in marketing from Wagner College (1995).

In 1998, Milano came to St. Francis College as Assistant Coach for the Women’s Basketball Team and served as the College’s Assistant Athletic Director of Business Affairs, positions she held until 2002. After a brief stint at Hofstra University where she served as first assistant, Milano returned to St. Francis for the 2003-2004 campaign to lead the team as head coach. As a student-athlete, Milano was an outstanding member of the Wagner College Women’s Basketball Team. She served as team captain for three seasons and was named Most Valuable Player her junior and senior year. She was a member of the Second Team All Northeast Conference (1992-93) and

Northeast Conference All Newcomer Team (1990-91). Before a career ending knee injury her senior year, she scored 1,046 total points, an accomplishment that earned her a spot in the Seahawks’ 1,000-point club. Milano currently ranks 19th on Wagner’s all-time scoring list. Milano has high expectations for her team in 2009-2010. This year’s team, despite losing four seniors, will look to the senior leadership of Kendra Williams and Melissa Weithman. The team, with a mix of key reserves and new faces, will have a fresh new outlook and demeanor in hopes of forgetting a season ago and hope to vie for a Northeast Conference championship.

A

ssistant Coach Dionne Dodson embarks on her second season with the Terriers. Dodson joined the Terriers’ coaching staff this last summer. “Dionne is an outstanding addition to our coaching staff,” said Milano. “Her experience in recruiting and onfloor coaching is a tremendous lift to our program.” Dodson spent two seasons at Fordham University where she was involved in all aspects of the program. Assistant Coach sue wicks

Fourth Season · Hometown: Center Moriches, Long Island · Alma Mater: Rutgers University

S

ue Wicks, former Naismith Player of the Year Award winner and former Assistant Basketball Coach at Rutgers University, is in her fourth season as the Assistant Coach of the St. Francis College Terriers. Sue is a former WNBA all-star who played with the New York Liberty from 1997 to 2002. “We are truly blessed to have such a quality individual as Sue Wicks as a member of the coaching staff.” said Milano. “She has both played and coached at the highest level and adds a wealth of knowledge and experience to our staff. Our post players are able to learn the position from one of the best. Sue is also a tremendous recruiting asset for our program.” Wicks, a native of Center Moriches, New York, played for Rutgers University from 1984 to 1988. While at Rutgers, she was named a Kodak All-American in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and in 1988 she won the Naismith Award as well as National Player of the

Year Awards from U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Women’s Basketball News Service and Street & Smith. She was Player of the Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1986, 1987 and 1988, winning the Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP award in 1986 and 1988, and sharing it in 1987. She also was named to All-Regional Teams in the NCAA tournament in 1986 and 1987 and won a gold medal in the 1987 Pan-American Games. As the most highly decorated player in RU history, she holds the Rutgers records for points scored (2,655), rebounds (1,357), scoring average (21.2 ppg), rebounding average (10.9 rpg), field goals made (1,091) and attempted (2,099), free throws made (473) and attempted (641), and blocked shots (293). The scoring and rebounding totals are records for a male or female player at Rutgers. Following her college career, before the WNBA was founded, Wicks spent more than 15 years playing professionally overseas in Italy, Japan, Spain and Israel. In

1997, she returned home for the inaugural WNBA season to play for the New York Liberty. By 1999, Wicks had assumed the starting center position for the Liberty, due in part to her defensive skills. She developed into an All-Star player, participating in each WNBA All-Star Game until her retirement. In 2000, she was awarded the Kim Perrot sportsmanship award. In 182 WNBA games played, Wicks scored 823 points, for a total of 4.5 points per game, had 182 assists for one assist per game, recovered 788 rebounds, for a total of 4.3 per game, and had 158 blocks, for a total of 0.90 blocks per game. She finished her WNBA career with the eighth most shots blocked in WNBA history. Sue Wicks was named to the Rutgers Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994 and was inducted into the University’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 2005. Last April, she was enshrined into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame. She is only one of two Rutgers women’s

basketball players to have her jersey retired. This past July, Coach Wicks, along with Erik Spoelstra and David Fizdale of the Miami Heat (NBA) arrived in the Philippines on July 28th to hold basketball clinics from July 29th, to August 1st. “It was a tremendous experience to represent the United States, the WNBA, and St. Francis College in this once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Wicks. “During the trip, we conducted clinics, visited schools and spoke to youth about the importance of an education, positive health practices and respect for diversity.” Wicks goes on to say, in her blog about the trip that, “I know I speak for our entire envoy when I say that we were overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality of these amazingly resourceful people. I feel truly blessed to have had this wonderful opportunity of sharing with the Philippine people.”

History of the Women’s Basketball Program St. Francis College boasts one of the oldest basketball programs among New York City’s colleges. St. Francis put its first players on the court in 1896, only five years after Dr. Naismith invented the game. From the college’s inception in 1859 until September 1969, St. Francis was an all-boys’ school. The fall semester of 1969 marked the first time laywomen were admitted to the college. In 1973, five years later, the first St. Francis College women’s basketball team was formed. The first women’s basketball coach was Christine McGowan, who led the team to a 9-5 record in its inaugural year. Jeanne Zatorski was the first woman in St. Francis College history to score more than 1,000 points in her collegiate career (197579). The 1975-76 season gave the women’s team their first postseason play-off bid. That season, the team also turned in the highest win total in school history with 16. In 1977-78, the team played in their first regional tournament, where they eventually lost to Fordham University and ended the season with a 14-13 record. The most prolific scorer, male or female, to wear a St. Francis basketball uniform was Karen Erving (’87-91). During her four-year Terrier career, Erving amassed 1,929 career points. In addition to owning the school’s all-time scoring record, Erving also holds career records in rebounds, field goals made, field goals attempted and free throws attempted. Former Terrier coach Christine Cunningham ‘(91-95) was one of the most dominant players in St. Francis women’s basketball history; she currently ranks among the leaders in most of the school’s women’s basketball records.

In the last five years, four prolific players have etched their names in St. Francis College history. Katja Bavendam ’08 is the all-time career leader in block shots with 236 , while also setting a new career mark for rejections in a season with 93, as she accomplished that milestone during the 2006-2007 season in addition to becoming the 11th member of the 1,000 point scorers club. Tiffany Hill ’08, the second leading scorer in St. Francis history with 1,764 and 10th member of the 1,000 point club, enjoyed a stellar career in Brooklyn Heights. Hill was named to the 2004-05 All-Rookie Team,

and followed up with a 2005-06 and 2007-08 NEC Second Team All-Conference selection while being ranked 10th in three-point field goals in the entire NCAA in 2008. Galloway, New Jersey native Kara Ayers ’09, was the 12th member of the 1,000 point club, while attaining the secondhighest free-throw percentage for a career at 79%, and the third highest free-throw percentage for a season at close to 85% (137 of 162). Kristen Miah ’09, the Chester, Pennsylvania native set a career total of 431 assists, thanks to a remarkable 2006-07 and 2008-09 season in which Miah dished out 138 and 131 assist, respectively.

LONG ISLAND VS. ST. FRANCIS (NY) During the 1993-1994 season, St. Francis College and Long Island University contested the first official “Battle of Brooklyn” in women’s basketball. The Battle of Brooklyn has been a tradition between the two schools in men’s basketball for over thirty years. The annual game is dedicated in tribute to all women who have played collegiate basketball. Each year, a Most Valuable Player trophy is awarded at the conclusion of the contest. Last season, the Terriers ended a three-year drought, as they defeated the Blackbirds 49-48, on January 17th at the Wellness Athletic Center in the 16th Annual “Battle of Brooklyn.” Senior guard Kara Ayers (St. Francis NY) tied the game at 47, and with that basket became the 12th member of the St. Francis College women’s basketball 1,000 career point club and sealing the deal being named the Most Valuable Player for the contest. She finished the game with 11 points while junior Kendra Williams (St. Francis) finished with 14 points and nine rebounds Season 1993-1994 1994-1995 1995-1996 1996-1997 1997-1998 1998-1999 1999-2000 2000-2001

About The Northeast Conference Providing Opportunities. Building Futures. NEC New Media/ Television

NEC History

By providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom, the Northeast Conference (NEC) has charted a course of steady growth since its inception in 1981. Now in its 29th year of service, the NEC’s new Strategic Plan has established a blueprint for the future as the Conference strives toward becoming an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. The NEC can trace its roots back to 1981, when the league was first established as the men’s basketball-only ECAC-Metro Conference. A single-sport entity at its inception, even the league’s most ardent supporters during its formative years could not have envisioned a transformation into a burgeoning 12-member, 22-sport conference. The remarkable success story of the conference began to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the next 20 years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-in access to 13 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball). Though the NEC has featured various looks since its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner remain part of the current 12-school alignment. They are joined by Monmouth (admitted in 1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989), Central Connecticut State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred Heart (1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member, which will give the league a six-state geographic footprint with access to such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence. NEC member institutions now compete in 22 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. Men’s lacrosse will begin competition this season and officially become the league’s 23rd sport in 2010-11.

More widely-recognized than ever, the NEC is providing a number of new ways in which its growing fan base can follow the action. The Conference began by fulfilling its strategic plan-driven new media initiatives in 2008-09 when it launched its own YouTube channel, created NEC On The Run podcast segments, and added NEC Flashbacks, a video ondemand archive, to its website. More recently, the league dove into the social media arena by launching a Facebook page and offering periodic news updates via Twitter. Further enhancing its multimedia efforts, the league will begin webstreaming a women’s basketball game of the week in 2009-10, and raise the number of NEC championship webcasts from five to eight. To supplement one of the premier regional basketball television packages in the country, the conference also produces a football package and a preseason basketball show entitled NEC Countdown to Tipoff. Over the last five years, the Conference has televised nearly 150 events, as the league’s coverage area expanded to over 50 million homes. Along with flagship station MSG Network, other regional television partners include MSG Plus, FSN-Pittsburgh, MASN, Fox College Sports, Cox Cable and the Connecticut Sports Network. In 2009, ESPN broadcast the men’s basketball championship game for the 22nd straight year, while ESPNU carried the women’s championship game, marking the second time in as many years that the women’s contest reached a nationwide audience.

Academic Success

The Northeast Conference’s commitment to academic excellence translated into national recognition for both individual student-athletes and the league’s member institutions as a whole in 2008-09. NEC student-athletes graduated at an 83.8 percent rate, which is well above the national average of 78 percent according to NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data. Likewise, a total of 19 NEC teams garnered public recognition from the NCAA for their latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The league placed 42 representatives on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams, five of whom went onto garner Academic All-America Honors. The first team honorees were Fairleigh Dickinson’s Matt Maher (baseball), who was a third team recipient in 2008, and Wagner’s Andrea Lazzari (softball). Saint Francis (PA)’s Eric Reifsteck (field hockey, second team), Monmouth’s Ben Evenden (tennis, third team) and CCSU’s Yan Klukowski (soccer, third team) were also honored for their academic and athletic performance. Evenden was a nominee for the prestigious Rhodes Scholar Award, while Wagner swimmer Alexandra Tomlinson was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. On a conferencewide level, more than 2,000 student-athletes qualified for the NEC Academic Honor Roll, nearly a 25 percent increase from the previous year. Saint Francis (PA) posted the highest GPA in the conference to claim the NEC Institutional Academic Award for the first time.

Athletic Achievement

Reinforcing its presence on a national stage, the Northeast Conference sent representatives to NCAA Championship events in 14 different team sports in 2008-09, while NEC studentathletes individually qualified to compete for an NCAA title in men’s outdoor track & field. In its longstanding effort to increase studentathlete opportunities, the Conference began sponsoring women’s bowling as a championship sport and immediately grabbed national headlines for its successful inaugural season. Five of the league’s seven bowling members occupied a spot in the final regular season edition of the NTCA Top-20 Poll with No. 2 Fairleigh Dickinson defeating top-seeded Nebraska to advance all the way to the semifinal round of the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship. Lock Haven found itself ranked amongst the nation’s Top-25 as it marched toward its third consecutive NEC field hockey title. In football, Albany became the first NEC team in nearly a decade to post back-to-back undefeated seasons within league play. In a game televised nationally on the YES Network, the Great Danes blanked Pioneer Football League champion Jacksonville, 28-0, in the third annual Gridiron Classic. Robert Morris men’s basketball, which has won 50 games and two NEC regular season crowns in two years under head coach Mike Rice, captured its league-best sixth NEC title with a 48-46 last-second victory over Mount St. Mary’s before a nationwide ESPN2 television audience and a school-record crowd at the Charles L. Sewall Center. On the heels of its perfect (18-0) run through the NEC women’s basketball schedule and second NEC Tournament title in four years, Sacred Heart gave third-seeded Ohio State all it could handle in NCAA first round play. Individually, 13 NEC student-athletes received All-America honors in their respective sports. Lock Haven’s Blair Wynne, the only threetime Player of the Year in NEC field hockey history, was named to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America Second Team for the second consecutive season. NEC men’s soccer had its most successful year since 1987 with three players acknowledged at season’s end for their play. Quinnipiac’s Graciano Brito earned his second straight NSCAA/adidas All-America honor, and was joined by FDU junior forward Samson Malijani on the third team. Brito and Monmouth’s Angelo Amato were third team College Soccer News honorees. In addition to five football AllAmericans, Monmouth’s John Nalbone became the latest NEC player to reach the NFL when he was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2009 Draft. Former Wagner pitching great Andrew Bailey, a 2006 draft pick, broke into the big leagues in a big way during 2009. A non-roster Spring Training invitee, Bailey won a place in Oakland’s bullpen before earning a spot in the MLB All-Star Game three months later. Hoping to someday follow Bailey’s rise up the professional ranks, five of the NEC’s finest were taken in the 2009 MLB Draft - Long Island’s James Jones (Mariners), Monmouth’s Ryan Buch (White Sox) and Brett Brach (Indians), Quinnipiac’s Chris Gloor (Giants), and Wagner’s Kyle Morrison (Nationals).

For the second straight year, Sacred Heart captured the Northeast Conference Commissioner’s Cup, recently renamed in honor of NEC Commissioner Brenda Weare, who passed away in June. The Pioneers claimed the women’s cup for the third year in a row while earning the men’s cup for the first time ever to complete a clean sweep. The Pioneers established new Cup records for overall and women’s points in the process.

In The Community

The NEC, its member institutions and studentathletes have made community involvement an important piece of its mission. In 2008-09, the NEC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee made its annual visit to the Cancer Recovery Foundation in Hershey, PA in February. That same month, conference members participated in “Think Pink” Day, a global effort organized by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The NEC made efficient use of the $75,000 it received from the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Grant Program last season. Expanding its base deeper into local communities, the Conference saw its women’s basketball attendance increase by 20 percent to establish a new league record.

Evolving and Expanding

In recent years, the Northeast Conference has taken aim at upgrading the caliber of the league’s championship sports and enhancing the opportunities and experiences for the more than 4,000 student-athletes that compete in the conference. Set to become the NEC’s 12th full-time member, Bryant has begun competition within the conference as it moves through the NCAA reclassification process. The Conference has also secured automatic access to the NCAA Division I Football Championship playoffs beginning in 2010, making football the 14th team sport in which NEC student-athletes are guaranteed a chance to compete for the NCAA crown. New sport sponsorship in women’s bowling and men’s lacrosse (2010-11) will create further opportunities for NEC student-athletes. Set to embark on a number of branding, sportsmanship and community initiatives as part of the league’s Strategic Plan, the NEC and its member institutions are committed to the future growth of the Conference.
