The 2022-23 school year was full of excitement, renewal, and gratitude. All through the year we felt and heard our community’s appreciation for opportunities to be together—as students, teachers, current families, and alumni—to build community and experience the best SA has to offer.

This year we also made significant progress toward our strategic initiatives. We continued the development of our campus, as we looked into the future of SA and considered how we can evolve to meet the needs of learners today and tomorrow. We made notable progress in enhancing our offerings to our students across academics, athletics, and the arts. As the fiscal year ends, so does my tenure as Board Chair. During the last six years, I had the privilege and opportunity to serve this community with a commitment to advance the mission of the Academy and enhance the educational experience for our students. While this came with many challenges, it resulted in many rewards. Overall, I am proud of the work we have accomplished together and am confident in the course we have charted going forward. Since my time as a student at Sewickley Academy, I have been perpetually impressed by the generosity and commitment of our loyal donors. By coming together through independent gifts, contributions to the SA Fund, attendance at special events, community partnerships, and so on, our community has helped amplify our growth and create a lasting impact that allows Sewickley Academy to flourish and remain strong for years to come. As we approach the 2023-24 school year, I hope each of you will consider making a meaningful contribution to support our students, faculty, and staff. In preparing the Annual Report each year, I enjoy the opportunity to reflect upon the many accomplishments that we, as a school community, have achieved. At our core, Sewickley Academy is built around academic excellence. It is the primary reason that students and their parents choose our school, and our guiding principle in preparing students for not only college but beyond into their careers. All of our additional extraordinary programs and activities flow from the establishment and enhancement of a strong academic base. Accordingly, this was a primary focus over the last year. The first order of business in assessing and strengthening curricula across all divisions was the appointment of an Associate Head of School, whose primary responsibility would be oversight and implementation of academic strategy and operations. I was pleased to welcome Chris Anderson into this role, and she was a familiar face to many, as Chris was a longtime Senior School math teacher and Department Chair. She left SA in 2011 for Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, PA, where she served most recently as Academic Dean. We are so fortunate for her willingness and enthusiasm to return to Sewickley and take on this important role.

Another notable addition to our leadership team was the arrival of Jamie Nestor as our next Head of Senior School. Jamie came to us from Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, NY, where she spent 12 years, beginning as a Latin teacher and concluding as Upper School Dean. Her commitment has already shown measurable results with our AP scores exceeding state and national standards, the induction of 12 students into the Cum Laude Society, and four National Merit finalists. She has also spent the year planning and preparing a substantial overhaul to our academic and college advisory program to be implemented in the 2023-24 school year. Stay tuned for updates on this and other exciting and innovative new initiatives coming to the Senior School. The Middle School also saw enhancements in curriculum and personal growth opportunities for students. These included increased academic minutes in all five core courses in order to further achieve maximum classroom learning potential; the addition of new computer science courses for each grade level, such as programming animations, consumer electronics, and artificial intelligence; the addition of skills labs; a new advisory program aimed at making high-character decisions; and the return of the class trip. The end of this year also brought the end of the
tenure of Dr. Shannon Mulholland. We will miss her dynamic presence and leadership after six years as Head of Middle School and over 20 at the Academy. In the Lower School, we implemented a streamlined literacy curriculum with consistent threads across grade levels. We grew our support services, which includes regular screenings to identify students who could benefit from enrichment and individualized instruction. We also expanded our after school activities program, which is a student favorite, with a variety of offerings daily, ranging from athletics to sewing to science buddies. There is most certainly an option to appeal to everyone. Similarly, we were pleased to introduce full-day summer camps for our youngest students. Of course, when it comes to building the life of the school, academically and otherwise, our leadership team can only plan, guide, and oversee, up to a certain point. It is our faculty who are really the “boots on the ground” making our initiatives happen day-to-day. With 71% of faculty currently having advanced degrees, several more are working towards their masters and doctorates. Further, a number were honored to be invited to present at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) annual conference and at the National Future of Education Technology Conference (FETC).
It gives me great pride to see our own experts out representing Sewickley Academy on a national level. I also experience that same sense of pride on a daily basis when I see our teachers at work both with their students and with each other. I am truly grateful for this remarkable group of talent. While stressing the importance of academic achievement, we must also instill in our students a sense that learning extends beyond the classroom and is not a strictly individual endeavor. In that vein, we saw numerous awards brought home through the wide variety of activities our students participate in beyond campus. A small sampling includes our Model UN team taking numerous awards for Best in Delegation and position papers at both Model EU and Model UN conferences; first place wins for one Senior School and two Middle School students at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Competition, along with three second place Middle School winners; an AllStar Performer named at the PA Thespian Conference; our Whoa!Bots robotics team made it to the playoffs in the Southwest PA qualifier; both of our Esports teams made it to the playoffs in their first year of competition; and the Senior School Math Team placed second in Pennsylvania in the Purple Comet! Math Meet.
Finally, I must take this opportunity to acknowledge the many people who work in partnership to advance Sewickley Academy’s mission throughout the year. I cannot emphasize enough that it is the collective community, including all of our parents, alumni, families, and friends, who enable us to chart these accomplishments and proceed to build upon them. EDUCATIONAL IMPROVEMENT TAX CREDIT (EITC)
75% Tax Credit
Since 2001, Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program has allowed businesses and individuals to lower their tax bills by donating to private schools, scholarship organizations, Pre-K programs, and other educational enrichment initiatives. The EITC tax credits were created by the legislature for the purpose of providing tuition assistance in the form of scholarships to eligible students. The Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) – Special Purpose Entity (SPE) program provides individuals with a 75% tax credit for donations to a nonprofit scholarship or educational improvement organization. The tax credit increases to 90% if the individual commits to make the same donation(s) for two consecutive years. Our goal at Sewickley Academy is to provide equal access to academic excellence for children in our region. Every year, the number of students applying for financial aid increases and continues to exceed available funds. Support, through the EITC program is essential to achieving this goal.
HOME and SCHOOL ASSOCIATION The Home and School Association is a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization with a purpose to support the education of the children at Sewickley Academy by fostering relationships among parents, faculty, and the administration. Home and School membership include all parents, legal guardians, and other persons standing “in loco parentis” with a child or children enrolled and attending Sewickley Academy, as well as all members of the faculty, staff, and administration of Sewickley Academy. 10

36TH ANNUAL AUCTION:
The reviews are in, and...Sewickley Academy topped the charts! Thanks to the generosity of a sell-out crowd and online donors, the SA Auction was #1 at the box office on Saturday, April 22, 2023. In fact, it was a blockbuster year with more than $460,000 raised! Funds donated impact SA students across academics, athletics, arts, and more, and help faculty and staff with resources and professional development opportunities. This year’s auction also exceeded the goal for Breakthrough Pittsburgh and our Fund-A-Need initiatives! As always, the true stars of Sewickley Academy are the students, and they did not disappoint at Lights, Camera, Auction! Freshman Emma Ehan and sophomore Avni Kathju shared their experiences on the service trip to Belize, junior Max Peluso and senior Ibrahim Khan literally sang for their supper as they shared the significance of Rea Auditorium to their SA experience, and senior Isaac Ulloa explained how Breakthrough Pittsburgh has been life changing for him. Great job to the Advancement Team and much appreciation to everyone who participated in making the 17th Annual Hansen Cup Memorial Golf Outing a tremendous success! Despite having to navigate a date change and windy course conditions, the day was filled with fun and philanthropy in memory of W. Gregg Hansen ’77. With more than 100 golfers and the support of 20 contributing sponsors, inducing an extra push from our matching donors, more than $86,000 was raised, well surpassing the $70,000 goal! The net proceeds will support the W. Gregg Hansen Memorial Scholarship Fund, including the contribution for the 50/50 winner, Mark Bazzone, who generously donated his winnings to the scholarship fund.
