Celebrating 15 Years

of Wellness This year Seven Oaks Hospital Foundation will be honouring the Wellness Institute’s 15 year anniversary at their annual Gala.

15 years ago Seven Oaks General Hospital’s Wellness Institute opened its doors and changed the way we think about health care, lifestyle and physical fitness. A broad-base of community and healthcare leaders came together to respond to the need for chronic disease management and prevention measures. The results transformed the hospital and the community. This international, award winning organization was founded on the principle that everyone, regardless of their condition, can benefit from the practice of healthy living. By promoting active living, supporting healthy lifestyle change and helping clients learn to manage their own chronic conditions, Wellness Institute has helped create a healthier community.

at Wellness Institute those members were more physically active, less likely to smoke and reporting better health status than the general population. Additionally their use of preventive medical services increased while hospitalization and Emergency Department visits were lower. One of those members is Dwight Trudeau who joined in 1999, “The people here are fantastic! There are so many different sectors represented: the young, the old, the injured, cardiac rehab patients and those like myself who just want to get fit. I believe that each and every one of them is here for a purpose; to get well. That’s where you grow as a family here at the Wellness.”

Today many thousands of people have benefited from programs at the Wellness Institute. With services like the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs, the many health and fitness classes and the individualized membership services provided by degreed and certified staff, the attention to quality is apparent to everyone who attends.

Dwight, who has used a wheelchair for over 20 years, said, “You can’t put a value on health. If I was to stop what I’m doing now, it would probably shorten my lifespan because of my diabetes and other conditions. Stopping is not an option, it’s a lifestyle change, is all, and it’s like getting married. You don’t do it just for today or tomorrow, you put it in your life whether you have time or not. It’s worth it.”

A 5 year study showed that Wellness Institute is achieving the original goal of a healthier population. Wellness members, on average, faced more health challenges and started with poorer health behaviors (smoking, exercise, diet) but after two years

This year's Foundation Gala, "One Sweet Affair", will take place on Thursday, October 11th and will feature a one of a kind culinary competition. Dr. Kevin Saunders, the Wellness Institute’s founding and current Medical Director, will be the keynote speaker for the evening.
