MAD MAN COCKTAILS revert to a better age martini lunches by Kerrice Mapes | photo provided | @TopekaBeer

No need to muddle, measure, share or stir. Simply twist, pour and enjoy. A summer trip to Old Town in Wichita changed my view on summer brews.

The Moscow Mule, made popular in the 50s and 60s is a cocktail made with muddled lime, vodka, ginger beer and garnished with a lime. The refreshing twist on a summer brew is the come-back king of summer/fall in Topeka. Strathman Sales Co. now distributes a ginger beer in Topeka for those who want to create this legendary cocktail themselves. You can pick up Crabbies at Fleming Place, Devlin’s Liquor on 29th and Pit Pass Club Liquor. [Be careful, this ginger beer contains alcohol, different to what you might get in a restaurant.] For those who want immediate satisfaction, pick up some Artys. The handcrafted drink is served ready-to-go in a bottle with carbonation provided to add to the legendary taste. Sold in 4-packs with 6.9% Alc/Vol.

Two years later, Topeka has been reverted back to a time of supper clubs and slower times (hello North Star) as Artys hit our libation scene. Arty’s RTD (ready to drink) cocktails include the hottest cocktail in America the Moscow Mule along with the Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet, and the Whiskey Old Fashioned Sweet & Sour. aseveneightfive

ARTY’S STORY Timothy Pappin and his nephew Ryan Mijal realized the need to bring Old Fashioned Wisconsin supper club drinks to the world in a convenient bottle. After two years of experimenting with formulas and recipes, they realized they captured the essence of the perfect cocktail. The first batch was bottled on July 7, 2012. 4

great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together in a supportive environment to transform homes, families and themselves,” Nikki MacMillan, volunteer coordinator of Topeka Habitat. Following Women Build, Topeka Habitat in partnership with First Congregational Church (FCC), will host a concert by Bruce Vantine’s Cornerstone Chorale + Brass. This acclaimed ensemble of 30 musicians from St. Louis will perform “Make Us One” on Sunday, October 5th. The performance will feature a unique combination of traditional choral and instrumental music mixed with spoken word and newly composed music. “This concert is about unity and inspiring people to come together for positive change. Habitat for Humanity is an organization that does just that” Tobias Schlingensiepen, senior Pastor of FCC. Tickets for the event are $15, seating is limited and all proceeds benefit Topeka Habitat. The week concludes on Monday, October 6th with the observation of World Habitat Day. Topeka Habitat will host its World Habitat Day event at 10a at their newest home located at 1717 SW Sieben. Registration begins at 4p at The Celtic Fox and the cost is $5 per person and/or five cans of food, which will be donated to Let’s Help Topeka. The event is organized by Kansas Karnage and Louie Creek, member, is excited for this years 3rd annual walk. “We had almost 400 people participating or watching the walk last year, I’m excited for even more participation this year.” Kansas Karnage is a local club with almost 400 members whose mission is to bring horror and Sci-Fi events to Topeka. Other upcoming events include a “Walking Dead” premier party at Reeds Lakeside on October 12 and hopes of hosting a major Con event. Kansas Karnage began in 2011 by a group of friends, most who were actively involved with Slash + Bash.

night of the living dead at hht “Night of the Living Dead” shows at Helen Hocker ‘til October 4 and is a fun and hilarious re-imagining of Geroge A. Romero’s legendary classic. Set in 1968 the film has been brought to life and placed on stage. The play lovingly examines the movie itself, the period in which it was made and the film’s undying influence on the horror genre.

movie at that time, and made the movie unpalatable to some and innovative and inspired to others. Even though it featured images of racial violence, cannibalism, and social anarchy, it was the grim, unhappy ending that stuck with people. It is a hallmark that has carried through the genre until today. No guaranteed survivors.

Night of the Living Dead was produced at a time of incredible social and political upheaval. The Vietnam war; the Civil Rights movement; the collapse of the patriarchal, nuclear family; and growing mistrust of the government and media are just some of the themes that influenced both the filmmakers and their audience. The film itself was met with controversy for featuring an African American protagonist and realistic horror images; both ground breaking attributes for the time period. The gritty, black and white cinematography made the action seem more like television news footage than a Saturday matinee horror film. This made the images that much more “real” and frightening to an unsuspecting audience.

The Topeka performance doesn’t disappoint and combines local cinematography with great talent. A must see.

[Spoiler Alert] And yet, possibly the most controversial element to The Night Of The Living Dead was the ending… Everybody dies. Even the hero doesn’t survive. That was unheard of for any

LOCAL FLAVOR

FOOD NINJA Henry's BBQ 3. Fists

I

stand alone. Waiting, watching. In the midst of the swirling scents of my foe I am momentarily disarmed. I regain my focus and move in on my prey, stalking silently like the wind, waiting for the moment to strike. I infiltrate the screen door of Henry’s BBQ inside Topeka Harley Davidson and am transported to another world. I am unprepared for my enemy and recognize I have an arduous battle ahead of me. I approach the counter and connect the first blow…

Friendliness

I am greeted upon my entry with a surprised smile. They never saw me coming but they rebound and rally their forces. My order is taken with swift precision and my senses become heightened as the nourishment is deposited on my plate. Politeness and gratitude reduce my defenses and I find it difficult to regain the upper hand.

Menu

Ninja’s RecommendationPulled Pork Sandwich 12

Abundant choices for this ninja. The decision for my meal was not an easy fight. I overcame the vast battlefield and chose my fate. I was defeated this battle but the war is not over. I will return to test my mettle with the other menu items… in time.

Atmosphere

A kind and quaint setting allows me to attack my meal in the quiet of my own booth with the gentle breeze of the fans and warm light of the midday trickling in through the window panes. I see the townsfolk coming and going, seeking to purchase new means of transportation from the Harley shop. It is a friendly environment that nearly removes all my defenses… but I am a ninja and I stand my ground.

Funds

For less than $10 I procure a sandwich combo meal including two sides and a drink. The portions for the money I pay are large and plenty to fill the battle weary stomach of this ninja.

Food

My taste buds are bombarded with flavors and I am helpless to stop it. Though a little thick, the baked beans are a power kick to the chest of flavor. The coleslaw flavor is unique and yet still leaves something missing. The meat… savory, delicious, disarming. I am utterly without force at this point. Bold flavor of the meat mixed with sweet tangy sauce delivers a blow to my defenses from which I cannot recover. Until then, this ninja needs rest and retraining to prepare for my next encounter.

MUSIC

king washington la indie-folk rock band tours to topeka

I

ndie-folk rock ‘n’ roll trio King Washington has “proved to be one the best bands playing in LA, and probably anywhere else for that matter.” [CWGMagazine.com] Lucky for us, they are embarking on their national fall tour which includes Topeka and 29 other cities. Drawing influence from a variety of artists and genres including Radiohead, Queen and bands of the British Invasion, King Washington was formed in 2005 by an 18-year-old Tyson Kelly (vocals/ guitar). With the addition of George Krikes (vocals/ guitar) and Billy Lee (vocals/bass), King Washington became a staple in the LA music scene with the release of their debut EP “Grenadine” in 2009. In 2012, the band released their first full-length album, “The Gears,” which was fully fan-funded and produced by Ambrosia’s Joe Puerta. The next year, King Washington released “The Overload” and set out on extensive touring. Having already completed seven tours this year alone, the band has played alongside giants such as Arctic Monkeys, Michael McDonald, Ambrosia, Peter Asher and Denny Laine. King Washington is gaining momentum fast. See these guys before the top all the pop charts at The Boobie Trap on Friday, October 10. This is recommended if you like Mumford + Sons, Radiohead and Cat Stevens. www.kingwashingtonmusic.com aseveneightfive 14

id you know that this year the Mulvane Art Museum celebrates 90 years of serving the Topeka community? And that most of what they do in the community is free and open to the public?

Mulvane Art Museum has been enjoyed by this artist many times over the years and especially their engagement with the public with meaningful arts experiences and their efforts to start the dialogue around important issues through the arts. Sometimes we can enjoy a place for ourselves and never realize the total impact it has on our city. I was surprised to learn that an estimated 50,000 people a year enjoy all the museum has to offer which includes 20,000 children. The obvious benefit of the Mulvane Art Museum is the ever growing art

collection. While international in scope, the collection emphasizes the works of artists in Kansas and the Midwest. The Museum also features the ArtLab: Look, Create, Understand education facility, public lectures, family events and community educational experiences for people of all ages and abilities. Then we can’t overlook the Museum’s visual art education program which provides extensive community outreach to children at after school sites, public and private school classrooms and preschool centers throughout the region. After 90 years of creating infectious community participation and influence in Topeka, it is fair to say that the Mulvane is an essential arts destination that must be celebrated by the community. Because most of their exhibits and activities are free, sometimes the Museum holds exciting special fundraising events to cover the cost of nurturing their activities. It is essential that we pause and take time to support this Topeka treasure.

“Imagine Art for a Lifetime, 90th Anniversary Gala” on th October 10 at the museum. One of these occasions is

This is one event where you can show your appreciation and help to continue their important mission. As part of the event, they have invited artists to submit a piece to their silent auction to benefit the running of the museum and supporting their ArtLab and outreach efforts. Connie Gibbons, director of the Mulvane Art Museum, explained her hopes for the Gala, “We want people to come celebrate their experiences with the Mulvane over the last 90 years.” It is an anniversary party and the perfect opportunity to give back to the Museum for all it does for the community. In addition to the gala auction exhibit there will also be the Alumni Exhibition for the Washburn University Art Department which showcases new works by the University’s most active and successful living artists to date. It features graduates in every decade from the 1950s to 2010s.

It will be an evening of nostalgia for the Mulvane Art Museum and well deserved for first art museum west of the Mississippi River. Yeah I just threw that little awesome fact in there, just like that… because as you say to yourself “I did not know that!” (like I did when I heard it) you can understand the significance this organization plays in our history and our community beyond the obvious extensive collection of Kansas artist they house. The Mulvane Art Museum is supported by Washburn University, the Friends of the Mulvane Art Museum, Inc. (which you should join), and through gifts from corporations, foundations and individuals like you. Join the celebration of this great institution right now by picking up your phone and dialing 670.1816 or get on your computer and go to GiveToWashburn. org/Mulvane90 and get your tickets today for “Imagine Art for a Lifetime, 90th Anniversary Gala.” Tickets to Imagine Art for a Lifetime, Mulvane Art Museum’s 90th Anniversary Gala, are $90 each. aseveneightfive 19

absolute

a permanent reminder of a good time

A

bsolute Tattoo located at 1212 S Kansas Ave has been providing good times and memories for over five years. Owner Jacob Schell and his team of artists have created a tattoo parlor that provides high quality work, maintains a sterile clean atmosphere but has it’s own custom vibe.

“Absolute tattoo is a laid back, not your average tattoo shop,” said Jacob. “We are more relaxed than others with cell-phone, kid-friendly, grandma-friendly, even gun friendly policies.” Perhaps that might sound like mixed policies for one shop, but it works for Absolute. Think of it this way, they operate much like a family: there are kid friendly areas if a customer needs to bring their little-one with them to an appointment and screens / partitions to protect viewing of adult imagery. If you are not a parent and looking for a more relaxed adult-atmosphere, the shop becomes a gaggle of fun where the same guys can be known to curse like sailors and tell dirty jokes. It’s all about when the time is right for either

I started a new piece at Absolute Tattoo with Jacob and the experience was excellent and refreshing. The atmosphere is inviting and friendly. The attention to detail in the work was intense! From gathering information, finishing the design, placement and execution; great care was taken at every step to make sure that everything was perfect. That level of care is both welcome and necessary when you are making an enhancement to your body that you will live with for the rest of your life...” - Google Review by Daniel Benson

atmosphere, and at Absolute, the costumers and artists dictate that. And perhaps it’s reflective of the diverse background of his artists: Jacob being an artist since age four with a strong creative parental influence and a recent dad himself; Johnny who’s second passion is DJing and produces electronic music for the best raves’ Stan - the family man, who also shows his artist talents in curated shows and Dave, our featured cover artist this month! Having multiple artists on staff and being open six days a week, Absolute prides themselves on being able to accommodate their clients in a timely fashion, reducing client wait times. Absolute clients have a variety of tattoo needs but they are known for their specialization in portrait and cover-up tattoos. Jacob’s specific passion is in photo realism and realistic black and grey portraits. An artist P.O.V. he began honing in high school. Absolute’s artist passion mirrors the caliber of tatoos is on a rise. “Just pick up the latest tatoo magazines and see how far tattooing has come,” said Jacob. Many newer trends can be had, including Realistic Trash Polka Russian, Watercolor and Wicked Fantasy - all available at Absolute. Tattooing is not Jacob’s only passion. He is proud to be a father first and foremost, as well as being civic minded and donating to community events annually. His second passion / hobby is located in a second dwelling directly behind Absolute. Jake’s RV Pro Am is a premier 1/10th scale electronic off-road radio controlled racing arena. They host races almost ten months out of the year. Getting a tattoo is (for most) a life-long commitment. It isn’t something to skimp on financially or take lightly. Topeka is lucky to be home to several talented, licensed artists with varied personalities and proficiency. “But if you’re gonna sit with someone, spend some money and even share some “uncomfortable” moments, do it with someone who is friendly and you like,” said Jacob. That is what Absolute is to their clients. They invite you to come hang out, have a good time and leave with some incredible lifelong art. aseveneightfive

revolver plays the main screen Rob Bolivar, screeplay writer for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space 9, creates Sci-Fi movie about Stull, Kan. Soundtrack features local band, Revolver.

by Jesse Matheis

Horror flicks hit the Topeka landscape once again and no surprise, Stull, Kan. is the landscape. Screenwriter Robert Bolivar, a veteran of the Star Trek franchise, will use Topeka and Lawrence talents this September

22

to help him create the film. Rob’s first full screen credit was the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode entitled, “Body Parts.” He is also currently in the process of resurrecting Star Trek Enterprise on Netflix with Doug Drexler, a Star Trek alumni. What tops it off is that local band, Revolver, is doing the sound track. Without giving too much away, the film will center on the legends and stories surrounding Stull, Kan.

Revolver + Robert Bolivar Tell us a little bit about your band, Revolver, and how you guys got started together. Revolver is made up of four members; Chris Moran-bass guitar, Adrian Chilson-drums, Dan Kious-lead electric guitar, and Matt Dittmer-lead singer. Chris and Dan have known each other since high school and from the local music scene. Both have been playing the guitar for over twenty years. They originally played in a band together named, “Under the Radar.” Once that band filtered out, they decided to start another Cover Band that would become Revolver. Revolver got its name after several musicians came and went. The idea came from the image of a revolving door due to musicians coming and going frequently that was later shortened to the name, “Revolver.” Chris discovered Matt Dittmer was a singer from a mutual friend and colleague that worked with both of them in the same profession. Matt was approached by Chris, tried out for the band and the rest is history. He has been their lead singer for the last five years. Matt’s background is in theatre from his high school and college days. Adrian Chilson joined the band approximately three and half years ago. Adrian has been playing drums for over twenty years and has been all over the country performing live with bands of various genres. Who were your personal influences musically growing up? All four of us come from different backgrounds and musical influences. Some of the bands that have been influential for most of us we cover in the sets we perform such as Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Ted Nugent, and AC/DC to name a few. Dan reports having influences from all different genres and lists the band Rush as a big influence. For Adrian in general a lot of 80 and 90’s rock. Chris reports 70’s rock as a big influence for him. Matt lists his influences in a variety of different genres including bands like The Doors and Pinky Floyd to different R&B artists such as Marvin Gaye and Al Green as well as various musicals. So you guys travel around NE Kansas and Missouri, what is your favorite part about traveling? The best part of the travel and playing new venues is seeing new sites and meeting new people and gaining new Revolver fans. Although the travel, set up, and all involved in putting on a show is hard work, if we can get new people to enjoy our music it makes it all worth it. Tell us more about the soundtrack to the new Sci-Fi Horror film by Robert Bolivar, a screenplay writer for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space 9. It will based on the myths surrounding Stull, Kan. How did you come upon this opportunity?

“There is so much rich history here...stories that should be told. I was very impresed with local legends. There is such an untapped well of talent and hisory that is overlooked in the Midwest. The time has come to change that.” -Rob Bolivar. Yes, we are very excited to be a part of this opportunity to be involved in creating the soundtrack for this movie. Chris and Matt know Rob through his work as a foster parent. Rob has been to see Revolver perform and mentioned to Chris that he was looking for local musicians to be a part of making a soundtrack for his movie and asked if Revolver would be interested. We of course said yes! Rob: There is so much rich history here... stories that should be told. I was very impressed with local legends, there is such an untapped well of talent and history that is overlooked in the Midwest. The time has come to change that. What will the soundtrack consist of? We have just begun creating the soundtrack and it is in the very early stages so it is kind of hard to say. It will more than likely be a mix of “creepy tunes” and hard rock and roll. What are your hopes for the band after recording this album? We do not really have any expectations following the soundtrack. We are just happy to have the opportunity to be involved and to have fun with the creative process. If it happens to go somewhere that is great, but not necessarily what we are expecting. No matter what we will continue to play live music, which is what we love to do. Will you and your band have a cameo in the film? This has not really been discussed but we are all for it! When will filming begin and will Robert be looking for local talent for his film? Rob: I would like to start filming in the fall; the film lends itself to that time of year. I generally work with a Company back East. But I rather use all local talent and facilities to make it a true KS/MO It looks like Revolver and Rob have their work cut out for them and so do we as a city that supports the arts. They will be asking for volunteers for all kinds of jobs in the near future. I for one will be volunteering my skills as a photographer, actor and anything else they may need. You should too! aseveneightfive

time machine

Celebrating two years. Records and Memorabilia

When a store like Time Machine annouces its anniversary...we should collectively raise our hands to the gods of rock, and rejoice.

et’s face it; the era of the locally owned and operated independent record store like Paul’s, Mother Earth, or Budget Tapes and Records are about long gone.

So when a store like the Time Machine, announces its two-year anniversary, we should collectively raise our hands to the gods of rock, and rejoice.

Internet sites like Amazon, iTunes and others, have practically made this type of store obsolete. And, even though Best Buy and Walmart, do an adequate job stocking new releases; if you’re looking to explore an artist’s back catalogue, you’re probably out of luck. And if you want it on vinyl, you might as well forget about it.

If you read this publication frequently, you might remember our barely contained excitement in the 2012 article announcing the existence of the record/memorabilia shop. Nothing has really changed much in the last two years. The little shop with a rock and roll heart is still located at 21st and Washburn, and it’s still packed to the rafters with the best selection of advertising and rock music memorabilia in Topeka.

Superman record player Charlie Dieker and Brent Smith continue to man the controls of the Machine, offering friendly indispensable advice to all curious time travelers passing through the portals of their cozy little shop. The atmosphere of the Time Machine is not unlike the record shops of old, when magic filled the air; a place where the rock and roll literati could come together with friends and colleagues, to exchange ideas and anecdotes about the bands and music they love. “I just want everybody who comes in to have a good time,” Brent states, “whether they buy something or not.” Smith said the store had a tough go at first. “We had a lot of odds against us, but our customers, and media support, like this magazine, pulled us through.” The store has been doing well enough to take on some extra help. Depending on what day you come in, you’ll have a chance to meet Musicians Institute of LA graduate and Hocus Pocus Glassworks employee, Chandler Lightfoot. And rocker Steve Moss, holds down the fort, when his band, The Midnight Ghost Train isn’t touring the globe.

Within the four walls of the Time Machine, you’ll find, not only some of the rarest and coolest rock and roll collectibles in the city, but an extensive array of receivers, turntables and speakers to assist in assembling your own personal time machine. And yes, you’ll find vinyl. The Time Machine houses a most eclectic and heavily rotated collections of vintage recordings in the city. Picture discs, colored vinyl and 7-inchers abound. The store has even been stocking a modest selection of brand new reissues, including Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon on 180 gram vinyl. So, if you’re looking for the best selection of rock and roll collectibles and vinyl records, both vintage and new (sorry, no Bieber or GaGa), look no further than the Time Machine, located at 21st and Washburn. Unfortunately, unlike another famous time machine of British origin, it isn’t bigger on the inside. aseveneightfive

tips for fall wine sipping seveneightfivers are always looking for great wine tips. Thanks to Paula Moulton, Sonoma wine expert, contributor for Wine Enthusiast and currently one of only 20 people in the world who has passed the wine course earning the prestigious Cordon Bleu Wine Management degree in France. She gives us Topeka wine lovers some advice. Whether for gifting or enjoying over a feast here are some tips from Paula: Be Adventurous: Dare to be different and pick your wine based on the beauty of its label as long as it fits in with your price range. You may be surprised to learn that wine labels oftentimes reflect the personality of the wine in the bottle so perhaps your eye will be your trainer for the evening. Don’t Forget to Share: Wine is about sharing, so bring the gift of wine based on what you would pick to drink yourself. What About The Rules: Break the Rules! Your host/hostess is making pizza, but you only drink white wine and you’ve heard that red wine is traditionally paired with pizza. You might be surprised to learn that a full-bodied white and even a sparkling white or Champagne pair well with pizza. Tips for Pairing Wine For The Holidays: In general, I pair wine using a simple technique that I learned from a famous sommelier in France. “Wine pairing should be looked at like we look at couples. There are two types of couples in this world: There are the couples who are similar to one another and make each other whole almost like being one person and then there are the couples who are completely opposite and one would never put them together.” Yet both couples work together and form a powerful bond. Check out more of Paula’s tips at paulamoulton.com. aseveneightfive
