Q. Where did you grow up? A. I grew up in Winnipeg until moving to Estevan in 1984

back into working with people on the education side of things so that’s why I applied to the police service.

Q. What was the reason you moved to Estevan?

Q. Was this something you always saw yourself doing?

A. My family moved

A. I always saw myself working with people. When I was playing hockey, an RCMP officer approached me about getting involved in policing so I gave it some serious thought and I put it on the back burner for a period of time until I reassessed and realized it was really something I wanted to do.

Q. What were you doing before you joined the police force? A. I went to university in Brandon, Manitoba to become a teacher, but part way through my satudies I decided to lose the course and I joined my relatives at their business in Estevan (The Days Inn). I worked there for a couple of years and decided it wasn’t what I wanted to go into. Q. What fueled your interest in becoming a police officer? A. Working with people, helping people more; in particular kids. I wanted to go

was organized to educate the citizens of Estevan and the surrounding area about drugs and the effects themselves as well as the effects on our community.

Q. What is your favourite thing to do when you are not working?

Q. As far as drug busts go in Estevan?

Q. What would you say is your favourite part of the job?

A. We had one large operation in 2008 and one large operation in 2009. We have not embarked on anything as of yet for 2010.

A. I am involved with forensic identification and that’s one of my areas that I enjoy. But the drug investigation I would say would be my top choice.

Q. Do you feel drugs are a problem in Estevan?

Q. How long have you been apart of the police force?

A. Just like any other community in Saskatchewan or Canada, we certainly have our issues and we are trying to work with the community around us to combat those issues.

A. 12 years

A. Spend time with family and friends, absolutely.

Q. What drugs are the most common in Estevan? A. Cocaine is prevalent. Cocaine and crack cocaine, marijuana would be the second. Q. How have you handled a situation where a close friend or family member was involved?

Q. What is your plan to help rid the streets of Estevan of drugs?

Elegant Leather Expressions

A. I treat them as I do anybody else. Just because I know them as a family member, relative or a friend it doesn’t matter if you are a member of the community, I am here to protect.

A. As far as policing goes increase enforcement and an increase in education to the community. In the past I have been involved with Empower; it was a group that

Our Past

May 7, 1959

Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter

Time to shape up and pick up Estevan, the Golden Garbage Can contest has returned and you should want it now more than ever; remember it has been nine years since you claimed your last victory. All it would require is dedication and the drive to succeed; you have to want it Estevan. As a newcomer to this friendly city, which I now call home, for the life of me I cannot figure out why Estevan has lost in the past. Coming from the Steel City of Hamilton, Ont., a city fueled full of pollution due to the heavy steel manufacturers such as Dofasco, I see no reason why Estevan could not kick Weyburn’s behind. Although I know very little about the rivalry of the cities in this nail-biting competition, I can say I have driven through and stopped briefly in Weyburn and have noticed no difference in its cleanliness compared to that of Estevan’s, but maybe I did not drive out far enough. To be fair though Estevan, while on my tour of the city I happened to pass by Boundary Dam, and I was a little appalled by the overstuffed garbage cans and trash that lay, covering the once visible grass. When it comes down to it, the title lies within the hands of the people that make up this wonderful city. I think contests such as these are what brings the community together working as a team to accomplish something they can take great pride in. So why not start by picking up the garbage? In my opinion I think residents here just need a little incentive to get them moving in the right direction and once that is accomplished there really is no telling what else a city like Estevan is capable of doing. So get out there and pick up a piece of garbage, just one at a time is all it really takes so long as everyone is making their contribution. Remember there is no I in TEAM and when people unite it creates a force no one wants to reckon with. Go get ‘em!

To celebrate Estevan's challenge for the Golden Garbage Can we thought we'd give a look into the past and the way litterers were made an example of. Don't litter, help keep Estevan clean. Each week the Southeast Trader Express tells us what has happened recently, but we'll also give you a look in to the distant past. If you have a photo you'd think the readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Rose Ditaranto at: rditaranto@estevanmercury.ca

The True Jive Pluckers comprised of violinist and concertmaster of the Regina Symphony, Ed Minevich, guitarist Jack Semple, and bassist and principle bassist for the Regina Symphony, Steve McLellen said they fall under the Hot Swing genre of the 1930s. ‘Minor football league will meet fundraising goal of $100, 000’ It was a sold out dinner and a room full of proud and dedicated to the cause citizens of Estevan at this year’s third annual minor football fundraising supper. Guests included Saskatchewan Roughriders middle linebacker, Mike McCullough, and voice of the Riders, Rod Pedersen. Pedersen said the significance of his presence was to get the word out for Estevan Minor Football and help make money for the team. Adding a football team means big things for the city, said Pedersen. “I think it’s huge for a lot of reasons; the identity of the city, putting it on the map football wise.” Brian Senchuk, president of the Estevan Minor Football Association board, could not agree more with Pedersen about what football will do for Estevan. “I think it makes us number one; I think it puts us in the category of a bigger city,” said Senchuk. However, it’s not really about the city as it is about the kids involved, Senchuk added. “Having football adds character to kids. I think it makes them leaders, better citizens and that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day; it’s about the kids,” said Senchuk. Pedersen said it allows the kids to feel part of a team and adopt the notion of relying on each other for support as well as keeping them active and out of trouble. Former Minor Football player, Jarren Senchuk said he really enjoyed his experience on the team and thinks it will do wonders for the city and athletes involved in the sport. “I’m glad that Estevan got a football team. It helps kids stay out of trouble and it brings everybody together.” As for funds, the team has reached $50,000 of its $100,000 goal, said Brian Senchuk. “We are short and we will be short after tonight, but hopefully throughout the season we will be able to raise that. We are not here to lose, we are here to win and we will get that

$100,000.” Pederson said he wished Regina could be as generous as Estevan in terms of fundraising. “The money that this program has raised in

three years is staggering; it’s hard to believe. Obviously the city wants it to happen too.” Senchuk said if it was not for the city, this could not happen.

Pedersen’s long-term dream for Estevan is that they one day look back and realize the impact adding

this team to the city has made. “They are going to look back one day and say

I don’t know what we ever did without it, and they’ll say I can’t remember this city without football.”

The women wore training gear that bared their midriffs and cleavage, some even dawned a full face of make-up. However, when it came time to start, these women meant business and trained like men on the artificial turf field at the 1st Mariner Arena.

Riders general manager, Brendan Taman, told Boreham he had been traded as part of a deal in which the Riders got the first pick, overall, at Sunday’s CFL draft. *** For figure athlete, Kim Gonzales being a wife and mother are her top priorities. ‘Teamwork all it takes for city to win Golden Garbage Can contest’ After lying dormant for seven years, the Golden Garbage Can competition finally returns, giving Estevan its shot at redemption. Prior to this year ’s competition, the city was on a two-year losing streak that came to an end in 2003. Ly n n C h i p l e y, c i t y councillor and chair of beautification for the city, said citizens should not be discouraged, after all seven years has passed and Estevan was neither a winner nor a loser. “It’s not like we have done this for umpteenth years and never won,” said Chipley. Chipley thinks a comeback for Estevan is more than possible. “I think we have made some great strides in the last several years just in terms of how we see ourselves and how we would like to see ourselves.” Nancy Styles, Weyburn city councillor, said although Weyburn feels very confident because this

has been a process they have undergone for years, Estevan has made some progress. “Estevan has done some things in the past couple of years that might help them,” said Styles. From the new garbage pick-up initiative to beautifying Estevan with art, trees and flowers, both Chipley and Styles agree that Estevan is growing. However, Styles said it might be tough for Estevan to jump into the contest after all these years. “It will be a little hard for Estevan because when you get away from it then you have to organize everything up again,” said Styles. In order to revive the city and brush off seven years of inactivity, Chipley said citizens need to start thinking positive about themselves and where they live. With positive attitudes, Chipley encourages people to start cleaning up in their own backyards and work in a collective manner to

choice, said Chipley. “The benefit of a clean city would be we would look much, much better to people coming to the city thinking about moving to Estevan or opening a business here,” added Chipley. Styles said the benefits are many and there are no losers in a competition like this. “I feel that no matter who wins it’s totally a win, win situation because I think both the citizens of Estevan and Weyburn take a lot of pride in their cities and it just makes it better places to live,” said Styles. Chipley said she thinks keeping the city clean will make people feel better about Estevan. Styles could not agree more that when it comes down to the reputation of your city, a cleaner one is a better one. “I think these two southern cities can teach the rest of the province a thing or two about having a clean city,” said Styles.

help Estevan stay clean all year round and not just at contest time. The reason the City decided to stop entering the competition was due to the fact that citizens only decided to clean up during the contest and neglected responsibilities afterwards. “They felt that a whole bunch of emphasis was placed on a four week window to get the city clean and it wasn’t ongoing; it wasn’t something people continued to do,” said Chipley. It’s simple, said Chipley, all anyone has to do is pick up after themselves, after all “the city is not your mother.” “If they spent a half an hour once a week tidying up their property we wouldn’t have to have this competition; we would win it hands down all the time,” said Chipley. Citizen efforts will not go unnoticed. The area that cleans up the best will win a park bench to be located in a destination of their

Should Dogs Roam School Playground? DEAR PAW ’ S CORNER: I walk early every morning around my neighborhood, and almost every time I walk past the elementary school, I see people letting their dogs run around the grassy part of the playground. This is right around sunrise, before school opens. I don’t think this should be allowed. What if a dog leaves a nasty “surprise” for the kids? Who should I call to report this? -- Concerned in New England DEAR CONCERNED: While you raise a good point about dogs possibly leaving waste behind after romping around the playground, there doesn’t appear to be any other harm done from

your description of what’s going on. Before calling to report these dastardly evildoers, be sure to check municipal, county or school board regulations about pets. There probably are regulations about when and where pets can’t go -- like inside the school or on the grounds during school hours -- but there may not be any rule stopping pet owners from letting their dogs romp on the grass at 6 a.m. I’m somewhat ambivalent about telling you how to stop a dog owner from letting his dog play in a controlled area. It’s become very difficult for urban and suburban owners to find open, unregulated places for their pets to play. But it’s certainly your right to voice your concerns, to the city or the school board.

A Kingdom Strange: The Brief and Tragic History of the Lost Colony of Roanoke by James Horn (Basic Books, $26) Reviewed by Larry Cox What happened to the lost colony of Roanoke remains one of the most

intriguing mysteries in our national history. In May 1587, 118 men, women and children sailed from England for the Chesapeake Bay. After three difficult months at sea, the group arrived not at their planned destination, but rather Roanoke Island off the coast of present-day North Carolina. The colony planned to establish the City of Raleigh, named for Sir Walter Raleigh, who hoped the settlement might grow into a thriving port. Faced with attacks from

local Indians, the group moved inland. When they began to run short of supplies, their leader, John White, returned to England for help, but it was three long years before he was able to return to Roanoke. When he did, he discovered the colonists had vanished, leaving only the word “Croatoan” carved on a tree. Even after 423 years, the fate of the colonists remains a baffling riddle. Dr. James Horn, historian and author, sheds new light on the lost colony of Roanoke in his new book. Horn is

convinced the colonists did not intend to establish an agricultural settlement, but instead to use it as a base for explorations into the interior, where they believed both gold and a passage through the mountains to the Pacific Ocean could be found. According to Dr. Horn, when White returned to Roanoke and found the strange message, he assumed the settlers had gone to live with friendly Indians on Croatoan Island, about 50 miles south. Dr. Horn builds a solid case that

even though some of the colonists did, indeed, go to Croatoan Island, most of them journeyed into the mainland to settle along the Chowan and Roanoke Rivers. After more than four centuries, Dr. Horn brings us as close to the truth of what happened to these early colonists as we are apt to get. This is historical reporting at its very best. kles Equipment: • Cupcake pans (mini and regular) • Paper baking cups available in a variety of colors and prints. Find them in supermarkets, party, craft or specialty cake decorating stores. • Resealable food-storage plastic bags for piping icings and glazes. Tip: Baking Pans A box of cake mix makes 24 to 30 cupcakes in regular-size cupcake pan. There also are pans that have mini, large and jumbo cups. If you have only one pan and a recipe calls for more cupcakes than your pan will make, just cover and refrigerate the rest of the batter while baking the first batch. Cool the pan about 15 minutes, then bake the rest of the batter, adding 1 to 2 minutes to the bake time. An easy way to fill baking cups is to use an ice cream scoop. Use one that measures out 1/3 cup batter when filling regularsize cups. Use one that measures out 2 tablespoons batter when filling mini cups. Frosting Tips: • Carefully dip tops of cupcake into the frosting, give a slight twist and remove. Finish off with a swirl of a knife if needed. • Dip frosted cupcakes into bowls of nuts, colored sugar, sprinkles or other decors for easy decorating. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
