Mick Bakke Q. When does fishing season begin in Estevan? A. It starts May 8, 2010. Q. Why is fishing a big deal in Estevan? A. I’d say it’s a big deal because it’s part of our heritage. I think for as long as we’ve been in this country, we’ve been hunters and fishers and it’s just continued right on. Q. How long have you been a conservation officer? A. For me, it’s been 29 years. Q. What interested you in becoming a conservation officer? A. I would have to credit my grandfather, he was a hunter/fisher and he introduced me when I was just a little guy and it became a passion. become a free for all. I think everybody would be out taking full advantage of our vast resources thinking that it’s endless and in reality it’s not. Q. What do you think fishing season does for Estevan? A. Southern Saskatchewan doesn’t have quite as much water as what the north does, but Estevan and area has three major reservoirs so we got some really good fisheries here. Boundary Dam has large mouth bass, which is the only place in the province and so we attract not only our local residents but we attract U.S. residents as well. Q. Is the fish in Estevan edible? A. Yes, it’s edible. I think with the two new reservoirs, Rafferty and Alameda, the mercury content is a little higher because they are new and that’s a natural thing. I

Q. Are people abusing the resources in Estevan? A. It goes on everywhere. People have this image of poachers skulking behind dark alleys or deep in the woods, but poachers is anybody who takes anything unlawfully. Poachers come in all shapes, sizes and forms and they exist everywhere; their presence is the reason why we are here.

think the recommendation is maybe a meal a week and perhaps children and pregnant women should abstain, at least until we see the levels start to dissipate. Q. Have you eaten the fish you caught? A. For sure and that’s pretty important because I’m not a seafood guy, I don’t eat a lot of fish. Some people don’t seem to like the bass here for whatever reason, but my experiences are it’s every bit as tasty as anything else.

Our Past

May 12, 1960

Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter

Fishing season is upon us and believe it or not Estevan, I love to fish. It all began when I was five years old. My brother was three at the time and a real mama’s boy, so whenever my dad would convince him to go fishing he would back out at the last second, cry and run to my mother. I made a decision right then and there that fishing was not just for boys and I volunteered to go with my dad. At first my dad was a little reluctant and over explained the process of fishing and how I’d be out there, by the lake, all day and couldn’t complain; I was more than ready. From that day forward I was my dad’s fishing pal and could not be happier. Of course at that age, I didn’t understand much about the mechanics of catching fish but they intrigued me nonetheless. I have always had a soft spot for wildlife and nature and it helped that fish was absolutely delicious. When I heard word that Estevan took great pride in its fishing, I was a little more than excited. Unfortunately I haven’t had the opportunity to fish for a few years now but I think it is about time I got back into the swing of things. I know that at first glance I do not seem like the type to fish and when I exclaim to others how much I enjoy it, they look at me puzzled and begin to laugh thinking I just told a joke. But I assure you folks, fishing to me is no joke, only a preferred pastime. I think it’s about time I got my fishing gear together and put it to good use, after all it has been years since I experienced the thrill of catching a fish. I wonder what kind of fish await me in Rafferty Dam? But I hear they are edible, which is a definite plus, since no one in their right mind would eat the fish out of Lake Ontario.

To commemorate the opening of Boundary Dam Power Station the City of Estevan and the Estevan Chamber of Commerce placed this full page ad in the Estevan Mercury. Each week the Southeast Trader Express tells us what has happened recently, but we'll also give you a look in to the distant past. The net operating income on average hog farms is being pegged at under $2,000 this year. That means a part-time job pouring coffee at one of the major coffee chains would make better financial sense. Hospital foundation raises over $300,000 at annual gala By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury This year’s St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation’s Spring Gala last Friday at the Beefeater Plaza, honoured the hospital’s financial donators and proved how generous the people of Estevan really are. “I would say we are in the $300,000 range which for a community this size is incredible,” said Normand Poirier, executive director of St. Joseph’s Hospital. Poirier said the foundation raised approximately $325,000 the night of the gala, not counting monies raised from the silent auction or raffles, which Roxy Blackmore, foundation director, said rang in at approximately $7,000. That night Spectra Credit Union finalized their $100,000 donation, which was paid in four instalments of $25,000 over the course of four years. “It’s all about providing service and giving back to the community. The community of Estevan and area is incredible when it comes to supporting initiatives like this,” said Tim Schroh, of Spectra. Poirier said the hospital totally depends on the generosity of the community and could not be more grateful. “As part of our operating budget, we basically get funded for staffing, utilities

and things of that nature, but there is very little in the way of operating expenses. “Everything medical, every piece of equipment seems to cost $50, $75, $100,000, we don’t have those funds. In order for the hospital to keep on running we are totally dependent on the community,” said Poirier. Ron Wilhelm, executor of Dennis Jenson’s will, donated $240,000 that night on behalf of Jenson. The year before, Wilhelm donated $300,000 in Jenson’s name. “It was a pleasure to do that. Dennis and I were really good friends and he was a single man, no children, so he wanted to donate monies to the hospital,” said Wilhelm. Jenson insisted the money be used to purchase medical equipment for the hospital. A plaque honouring Jenson’s selflessness is located in the hospital’s diagnostic equipment department. “This money is supposed to be used for equipment for the hospital so people don’t have to travel out of town,” said Wilhelm. Overall, Blackmore said she could not be happier with the turnout and support of the community. “I thought it was awesome. I’m overwhelmed from the support of the community.”

Brothel owners face charges in Saskatoon PROVINCIAL A former top public servant in Saskatchewan has been summoned by a Manitoba judge to stand trial for the murder of his wife. Mark Stobbe pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder for the slaying of Beverly Rowbotham, 42, at their home just north of Winnipeg in October 2000. Stobbe’s three-week preliminary hearing has come to an end. Provincial court Judge John Guy ruled there was insufficient evidence to take the case to trial. *** Police surveillance conducted over the winter months, revealed groups of men leaving an alleged brothel across the street from Saskatoon City Hospital. The men, who remain anonymous, answered provocative advertisements and postings by the brothel’s owners listed on the Craigslist website. Three women face outstanding charges. Orphaned children show happiness exists in Watoto village through song and dance

Polite, happy, and vibrant are the words that describe the children of the Watoto villages in Uganda as they danced and sang their way into the hearts of the Estevan community last Thursday night. By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury The performance by the Watoto’s Children’s Choir last Thursday at the Estevan Church of God helped shed light on the circumstances orphaned children in Uganda face day in and day out. Watoto, the Swahili word for children, currently have two established villages in Kampala, Uganda and one in Gulu, a war-torn community in northern Uganda that help shelter over 2000 children. The villages consist of homes for the children and their house mother, a school, medical centre, a community centre and an agricultural project. Each home is suited to house eight children and their mother, providing a normal, healthy environment for the kids to grow up in. Julius Anuari, a team leader in a Watoto village, said he feels honoured to be a part of the children’s growth and development and feels the village gives the children the chance to have a dream. “They are very talented. They are growing to be somebody; they have been given an opportunity to grow up and the opportunity to dream.” Watoto child, Gloria Tushemerirwe, could not agree more with Anuari and said the village makes her happy. “I like it because they

have given me everything I need. We all have our own bed to sleep in and we eat many times a day,” said Gloria. The choir ’s performance that night featured traditional African cultural song, dance and vocals and had the crowd dancing and even singing along with the children. “I want people to leave this place, one, with

hope knowing that you don’t have to be in Africa and an orphan to be hopeless. I want people to leave also knowing they can do something, it’s not how much of a problem there is to solve, it’s how much of a solution can I be,” said Anuari about Thursday night’s performance. Gloria said it made her feel extremely happy to see people dancing to

her and her fellow choir members’ music. “It felt good,” she said. Anuari said the choir feels connected to Estevan because of previous visits and felt it fit to return.

As for the city and multiculturalism, Anuari said people loosen up around children no matter what culture they come from. “People loosen up because hey, who cares,

after all you know these are children and how can you say no to children. “It’s another way of getting to show people that hey, you can live together; it’s a culture thing we can share,” he said. 10053PS02

The band is set to perform in Estevan, May 15 at the library despite losing their instruments in a flood earlier last week. Dogs faced disappointing loss at home opener Sunday By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Tempers flared at the Big Dogs lacrosse team home opener against the Prince Albert Predators, as the Dogs played their way to a devastating defeat, losing 16-3. “They realized pretty quick where they made the mistakes,” said Big Dogs coach, Evan Handley. “Of course they are disappointed with the outcome but they can see where there is room for improvement and where they have to work hard and that’s what lacrosse is about.” Pre-game, Handley was confident in how his boys would perform but said the game would be tight. Predators’ coach, Terry Lang, said his boys were prepared for the game and felt confident because they had beaten some fairly strong teams in the North. Lang also understands however, that Estevan is just starting out and hasn’t reached the Predators’ level. “Estevan is kind of a new program with lacrosse so we know they’re just starting up. They remind us of Prince Albert about five to six years ago. “ T h e r e ’s g r o w i n g pains and a wide spectrum of abilities and once they work that out, I think Estevan will be a little more competitive,” said Lang. As for the Dogs future

games, Handley remains faithful. “We can surprise some people. I definitely think we will be in every game, compete and work real hard; we practise hard,” said Handley. As for mistakes that were made, Handley said the team needs work on its defence and making the right plays on their offence. Lang said he’s happy about how his team performed. “I feel good about the

win. I was happy that we had balanced scoring. I was happy that some of our younger guys got a little more floor time. “I think they showed really good emotional control out there, they didn’t retaliate,” said Lang. Handley credited the Predators for their game performance. “They played good, they’re young, they’re quick and they got a lot of talent on their team; they move the ball well. They did a really good job.”

Even though the Big Dogs played their hearts out in last Sunday’s game they were little competition for the overly confident Prince Albert Predators.

The plates were revealed on Monday by Premier Brad Wall and mascot Gainer the Gopher and feature the team logo and phrase “Pride Lives Here. *** A quivering and tearyeyed general manager, Brent Parker ended his era with the Regina Pats hockey team. Pinkney opened with four on the first end against the U.S. and stole deuces on the second, third and fourth ends, later stealing another point on the fifth. INTERNATIONAL The agent for Erica Blasberg, an athlete in the Ladies Professional Golf

Association (LPGA), was found dead and police say they are investigating the circumstances. A spokesman for the Henderson, Nevada police said the death occurred overnight and did not make it clear whether foul play was suspected. Blasberg tied for 44th in her only LPGA Tour event of the season in Mexico two weeks ago. *** The Associated Press says it will conduct a re-vote for the two awards given to Texans linebacker, Brian Cushing at last season’s end. The decision was made after Cushing’s four-game suspension last week for violating the football league’s policy on performance enhancing substances. Cushing was awarded AP’s Defensive Rookie of the Year and second-year All-Pro. Jarius Byrd could be the new winner.

Love for wildlife drives rehabilitator to continue caring for her mammals By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury For Cheryl Winkler, it’s sheer passion that drives her love for wildlife, which enables her ability to rehabilitate mammals and ungulates (hooved species) back into their natural habitat. “I think everybody starts out with a love for wildlife. I mean children naturally gravitate to animals. I guess I just never lost the fascination with them,” said Winkler, of Moose Mountain Recoup and Release, a wildlife rehabilitation centre ran from her family home and acreage in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. Winkler accredits her sympathetic and caring nature to her growing up on a farm and being surrounded by animals on a daily basis. Winkler said she has been taking in strays and rehabbed raccoons for most of her life and when she gained recognition for her services, she became licensed. “People end up knowing that you do, so they end up bringing you the animals. I ended up getting licensed to do all mammals and ungulates.” Although Winkler is

licensed by the government, she does not receive funding and relies solely on the public for donations, which she said are minimal. Winkler has been licensed for three years now and said her centre cares for everything from “coyotes to foxes to fawns to raccoons to squirrels.” Mick Bakke, Estevan’s conservation officer, said he commends the work rehabilitators do but stresses the importance of being licensed before embarking on the path of wildlife rehabilitation. “Wildlife requires different treatment than domestic animals. It’s not something you can just jump into. Nobody can possess

wildlife unless they have a permit,” said Bakke. People need to shed their constant disregard for wildlife and their habitat and start paying attention to the impact they have on natural resources, said Winkler. “All mammals, we live in a high area for wildlife. With progress in the province, all the animals that come into our care, the problems have been caused by human causes.” Winkler said animals “get the short end of the stick” and thinks we owe them. “We were placed here for stewards for our wildlife and so far I don’t think we are doing a very good job of it.”

Winkler said she was appalled by how far behind the province is when it comes to providing its wildlife with rehabilitation centres. “I did a recent Google search, and Saskatchewan is miles and miles behind the other provinces.” Currently, Winkler said, there are 67 centres inCanada. Forty-one are in

The Wall Government is giving health foundations across Saskatchewan access to patient contact information without your consent? Despite disapproval of Saskatchewan’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, Brad Wall’s Sask. Party is perfectly comfortable violating your privacy. Health foundations will now have access to private information of patients for fundraising purposes to cover the Sask. Party Government’s own financial mismanagement. In a short time, Brad Wall has run up a $1.3 Billion deficit and now you are paying the price. Is Brad Wall and his Sask. Party a government you can trust? ARIES (March 21 toApril 19) You might not like some people’s idea of a surprise. But you could be in for a pleasant shock when someone finally sends a reply to a request you made so long ago that you almost forgot about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a time to expect the unexpected. So don’t be surprised if a decision that just recently seemed final suddenly opens up and leaves you with another chance to make an important choice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a different tack on a work project might rankle some colleagues. But the positive results of your innovative course soon speak for themselves. Celebrate with a fun-filled weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Meeting new associates can be awkward, even if you’re in a high positive phase right now. Best advice: Make them feel comfortable, and you’ll soon forget your own discomfort. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good time for you social Lions to blow-dry your manes, polish your claws and look like the Fabulous Felines you are as you make new friends and influence the influential. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expectations run especially high this week, and you should feel confident in your abilities to take advantage of what might be offered. A colleague has some advice you might find helpful. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent flurry of activity leaves you in need of a little breathing space, and you’d be wise to take it.

Page 23

Close family members should have an explanation about an emergency situation that just passed. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An insensitive act makes a difficult situation more so. But try not to waste either your physical or emotional energies in anger. Move on and let others fill the clod in on the facts of life. S A G I T TA R I U S (November 22 to December 21) It’s a good time to look into that training program or college course you’ve been considering. You might have a good place to use those sharpened skills sooner rather than later. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Education dominates much of your aspect during this week. You might want to start checking out those summer session courses that could help advance your career plans. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Progress often comes in fits and starts. But at least you’re moving straight ahead with no backsliding. You should soon be able to pick up the pace and reach your goals in due time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be wary of a deal that gives confusing answers to your questions. Remember: It’s always risky swimming in unknown waters, so you need all the help you can get to stay on course. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing people together and creating close friendships wherever you go. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
