There will be three pipers piping and two drummers drumming, but alas, no partridge in a pear tree. But how about one bedraggled captain? That’s the set up for six members of the Estevan Elks PPCLI Army Cadet pipe and drum band personnel this Friday. Twelve days of Christmas will be replaced by seven days of band camp. The five members of the pipe and drum corps accompanied by Captain Robert Rooks will be off to Penhold, Alberta where they will be attending the Prairie Region Honour Band instructional camp. It will consist of seven days of intense study and military training. The bagpipers attending the camp will be Master CorporalsAllan Mohrbutter along with Jesse and Wyatt Dunford. The drummers are Master Corporal Jordan Gervais and Corporal Eric McLean. Captain Rooks will take up the duties of pipe band co-ordinator at the camp that will see 11 pipers and 11 drummers advance their musical skills along with 60 members of a cadet military (brass) band. “The objective is to improve their musical techniques and skills while gaining leadership skills,” said Rooks. “The seven days of the camp will include some concentrated musical instruction along with military training and leadership skill building,” he added. The week-long exercise will conclude with a concert in Calgary before the cadets pack up for a return home and back to their regular classroom activities and instruction.

Budget expectations The provincial budget being brought down to the masses in Saskatchewan Wednesday is expected to be one of three types. By the time most readers get to view this editorial, the results will be in. At the time of this writing, however, we saw the options for Finance Minister Rod Gantefoer and colleagues being a (1) hopeful, (2) middle road or (3) hardline budget for the citizenry to absorb. Our bets are on Option 2, a budget of wait and see and expectations. A hopeful budget would simply be unprofessional and much too risky. It would have to count on a complete recovery of the potash sector, a continuation of an above normal oil income rate for the next 11 months, and unprecedented increases in the construction, financial and business sectors in order to pull it off. A hard line budget, well, we just don’t see this provincial regime having the moxie to pull it off. They’ve enjoyed being the nice guys on the political front for the past two years and they just don’t have it in them to do the 180 degree turnaround to become the tough guys in both political and financial worlds. They may not be next door to denial, but they’re living in the neighbourhood. That’s why we believed the Sask Party budget this time around was to be somewhere in the middle of the muck, poised for something to happen but having to do something in the meantime because budgets have to be approved every spring. Saskatchewan did not escape the recession, but we also managed to not get mired

Hail to the Hereford at 150 and beyond

down in it either. So give credit where credit is due. We were small enough and flexible enough to escape the big hammers of commerce. But Brad Wall and his crew became well aware of the penalties that had to be paid for inattention to detail. Potash is coming back, but don’t expect Gantefoer, Wall and their teammates to hitch any more wagons to that pony anytime soon. With Alberta making drastic changes to its oil royalty structure, Saskatchewan might also see a slowdown in that sector. Not much, but just enough to make us sit up and take notice. Bakken or no Bakken, oil companies play the game according to the rules in place at the moment, and at this moment, Alberta can still dominate the rules since they hold the trump cards with the corporate head offices and profit centres being located there … not here. With a rising loonie, losses in the film industry, housing and health care waiting lists, educational funding, and professional shortages all around, Saskatchewan faces some tough challenges ahead. We therefore believed this provincial government was going to present this “wait and see” budget, something that would allow Wall and Co. to hold the line while waiting for a turnaround that they expect will happen sometime later this year. They won’t be paying down any more debt. In fact they’ll add a few years worth to the bottom line in the expectation of better things ahead … sooner, rather than later. We hope they’re right. So we expected some difficult news in the budget, but no devastation either.

cattle over the ocean. It’s still considered a huge undertaking today, and we live in a time of jets and fast-traveling ocean liners. Even with such options we often look at moving genetics across the world as more easily accomplished as frozen semen and embryos, considering moving live animals too costly and hard on the animals. THE TRADER, FRIDAY, MARCH 26, 2010

HOLLYWOOD ... The town is still talking about Oscar. The Academy Awards have turned into more of a fashion show and partying event than a serious celebration of the best works in the business. It has come to be a Red Carpet event, with “What are you wearing?” instead of “Whom and what do you think will win?” And, where were Julia and Leonardo and a few other biggies? However, it is now in the past for another year, and the town is getting back to the business of making more movies with the thought of an Oscar win for next year. And aside to Naomi K. of Pensacola, Fla.: No, that was NOT a date with Chris Pine. That was his mother. And yes, he is already at work on another film. I’ll tell you more about it when I get it. Vanessa Redgrave, still mourning the death of her daughter, was honored with an Academy Fellowship by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Nothing new on her work schedule at the moment. It would be interesting to see her do a film

with son-in-law Liam Neeson. ... And Michael Douglas, from another award-winning showbiz family, gets feted by the Film Society’s annual Chaplin Award. Watching Michael recently, it’s amazing how much he looks like his father. More and more each day. WoodyAllenisnegotiating a film to shoot this summer, and Rachel McAdams is in negotiations to co-star along with Owen Wilson. And, as with all of Allen’s films, the plot is kept under wraps. As to his private life, Woody’s seems to be serene with his former stepdaughter Soon-Yi. As for Mia Farrow, one of his “formers,” I’ve no word on her at the moment. Hollywood still twittering over Elton John’s latest caper. At his “After Oscar Party” at one of the town’s top restaurants, he was so tired of hearing about the RED Carpet that he put down a WHITE one for his guests to tread on. And from what I’m told, the party was a whopping success. Aside to June D. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.: Yes, seats

are assigned at the Oscars. Nominees are near the front and on the aisles, so they can hop up and quickly get to the stage. AND as a small aside, sometimes it happens that someone lands a seat next to someone they don’t particularly care for, and the icy air gets icier. Production has been halted on “Spartacus Blood and Sand” because, unfortunately, star Andy Whitfield has been diagnosed with lymphoma. However, he is being treated and says he will return to filming. Good luck, Andy! *** BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Clint Eastwood’s next will be a biopic of former FBI head J. Edgar Hoover. Eastwood will direct the yet-untitled opus. Carpet-Cleaning Tips Q: I saw a reader’s tip last year where they took their area rugs out and laid them on the snow to clean them. My question is, can I do the same for installed carpet? -- Fred G., Rockingham, Vt. A: While the snowcleaning method may or may not work for your installed

(wall-to-wall) carpet -- I haven’t tried the original tip myself, by the way -- just getting the carpet up and outside would be incredibly difficult and time-consuming. So I do not recommend trying this. Instead, vacuum your carpet very thoroughly and then rent a steam cleaner from the home-improvement store (some larger supermarkets also rent them) and steam clean the carpet. If the carpet is so downdeep dirty that it merely laughs at the efforts of a steam cleaner, consider installing new carpet. Very dirty carpet or carpet that’s been exposed to flooding or

large liquid spills that weren’t dried properly has a shorter life span and can harbor molds and bacteria that a steam cleaner may not get to. This creates an unhealthy living environment. Now, you might say at this point, “Replacing the carpet will be incredibly difficult and time-consuming, too. What’s the difference?” Well, ask yourself, is the amount of time and effort spent pulling up the carpet, hauling it outside in the snow and then reinstalling it a better investment -- personally and financially -- than if what you haul back inside is a new carpet (which will increase the value of your home)?

pets? I was at a friend’s house and saw that the Easter baskets the kids had unwrapped were sitting out on the kitchen table, candies strewn everywhere. Their curious terrier, “Rascal,” kept sneaking onto a chair to sniff around the goodies. I was so worried for him, afraid he would eat the chocolate eggs or ingest the foil wrappers. Please tell your readers to put away the candy in a place that’s hard

DEAR LEAH: You said it best, and I thank you! In the excitement of a holiday, it’s easy to leave a lot of things lying around where pets can get at them, including chocolate and other dangerous items. But pets are an important responsibility. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs, and dogs also risk ingesting other dangerous things -- like plastic Easter eggs that break into shards when chewed. Cats may chew on items that interest them, like the rustling “grass” that lines baskets. Be sure to pick up wrapping paper, tinsel or plastic grass, and fallen candies right away. Better yet, put pets in a separate area while the unwrapping is going on, and let them in after everything is cleaned up. If, after a celebration, your pet seems lethargic,

Enlarged Prostate Puts Squeeze on Urine Flow

Got stuff to sell? Advertise in the classifieds! 634-2654

D E A R D R . DONOHUE: For men with BPH, would you recommend the Prolieve System for treatment? It involves reducing the prostate with heat. Must it be done periodically to maintain symptom improvement? Any information will be appreciated. -- Anon. ANSWER: BPH - benign (not cancer) prostate hypertrophy (overgrowth) -- is a common condition of older men. The urethra -- the bladder’s drainage tube -- runs through the prostate. A large gland acts like a vise, squeezing the urethra and making it impossible for the bladder to completely empty. Large glands make men get up many times during the night to visit the bathroom. They make it difficult to start the urinary stream, and they can reduce the stream to a dribble. Minimally invasive procedures, many done r i g h t i n t h e d o c t o r ’s office, pare the gland so that a free urine flow is reestablished. The Prolieve System (a trademark name) delivers microwaves to the gland to shave the excess growth. In this and in similar techniques, instruments are inserted into the urethra by way of the penis and passed upward to the level of the prostate gland, where the microwaves are then

a c t i v a t e d . Ye s , I c a n recommend it. Quite often, the procedure need be done only once. However, it is possible that a repeat will be necessary to trim the gland again should it regrow to the size where it compresses the urethra. Other procedures include the Green Light laser, in which a laser beam reduces prostate size

in a similar manner. TUNA -- transurethral needle ablation -- is another minimally invasive procedure, done in a like way. It employs radio waves to reduce prostate size. All of these methods work. The most important element in making a choice is the doctor’s skill in the technique. Medicines are another possible route for handling an overgrown gland. Drugs can relax tight muscles in the prostate and in the outflow tract of the bladder to permit better urine flow. Flomax and Uroxatral are two examples. And medicines like Proscar and Avodart shrink the gland, but they can take months to work. The booklet on this gland and its problems discusses these issues in greater depth. • “I love vegetable soup, but I find that the canned soups don’t have enough actual vegetables and are very high in sodium. My daughter will make me a great big pot of homemade veggie soup about once a month, and we portion it out into singleserving plastic containers. Once they cool, we freeze them, and I have a constant supply.” -- V.B. in Ohio • When spray-painting a small item, tuck it into a paper shopping bag. You can spray it without the overspray being a big deal. You also can use this technique when spray-painting something outdoors on a windy day or when working in your garage. If the item is larger, try to find a comfortablesize cardboard box. • Wrap aluminum foil around doorknobs and wall-mounted lighting fixtures when painting. It will avoid drips and spray. • “To make salads for lunch, I wash and cut my salad greens and then portion them out into zipper-top plastic bags. I put an appropriate amount of dressing in a small, sealable container and stick it right in the bag with the greens. When I get to work (or to the park for a picnic), I pour the dressing into the bag and shake to distribute it. Then, I just dump the salad into my bowl.” -- P.M. in Oregon • To clean and deodorize a microwave, spoon 2

tablespoons of baking soda into 3 cups of water in a Pyrex or heavy glass measuring cup. Boil for 2-3 minutes in the microwave; let sit for 2 minutes and then wipe out the inside of the microwave with a cloth. Rinse the cloth with the soda water and wipe out anything left behind. Pour the water down your drain with some vinegar to freshen that as well.

DEAR PAW ’ S CORNER: My 4-year-old Dachshund, “Miss Itzy,” is very aggressive with all of my neighbors, friends and some of my family. However, she’s a sweetheart around my granddaughter and greatgrandchildren. She has to wear a muzzle when she gets her nails trimmed or goes to the vet. I’m so afraid she will bite someone. I love her to death and don’t want to get rid of her. Can you help? - Maria, Marion, Ind. DEAR MARIA: You should find out what your granddaughter and greatgrandchildren are doing that makes Miss Itzy so calm around them. (Do they have dogs of their own? How do they train their dogs?) There’s something about the way they interact with your dog that really calms her down. Miss Itzy is likely aggressive due to anxiety. The clues in your letter -aggression toward strangers, the groomer, the vet -- show that she’s got a lot of worries about these strange people. The groomer and vet are easy to spot -- most dogs do not like nail trimming or getting exams and shots. Another question is, how do you act around neighbors, the vet or groomer? Do you get anxious (maybe because you’re worried that Miss Itzy will get anxious)? Dogs are really good at reading owners’ emotions, and Miss Itzy, devoted to you as she

is, will get more anxious, and even take a protective posture, if she thinks you’re afraid or in danger. Talk to the veterinarian about prescribing antianxiety medication for Miss Itzy, and talk with a professional trainer, if possible, about ways to train your dog to settle down in unfamiliar situations. Also, observe your own behavior in different situations and try to keep a calm and level voice, even when your dog is barking her head off.

Eggs-quisite Natural Dyes and Designs Bring back the past by dyeing your Easter eggs the way it used to be done -- with natural items straight from the kitchen and garden. Here’s what you’ll need: --Hard-boiled eggs or blown eggs (see below for how to blow eggs) --Nontoxic, safe food items such as blueberries or red cabbage leaves for blue, walnut shells, tea or coffee for tan, red beets for gray. Experiment with what you have on hand.

--Medium-size saucepans (one per color) --Water --Vinegar --Slotted spoon --Strainer --Mixing bowls --Cooking oil and soft cloth Pour 1 cup water into a saucepan and add a handful of an item such as berries, or cut-up fruits and vegetables. Bring to a boil and simmer about 15-30 minutes until the water turns the color you wish. (The eggs will dye in a lighter color than the color in the pan). Strain the colored water into a small mixing bowl. Add 2 teaspoons of white vinegar to each cup of liquid. Add eggs to the natural dyes. Turn them around occasionally. Note that colors will be subtler than commercial dyes. Remove

the eggs with a slotted spoon and let them air dry. When dry, polish with a small amount of cooking oil applied to a soft cloth. Refrigerate boiled eggs. Drying Tip: For a convenient drying rack for blown eggs, set several wooden skewers in a chunk of floral foam. Insert skewer through the hole at the bottom of the dyed egg. Extra idea: Onion skin dyeing method with plant designs. Place 2 or 3 handfuls of loose yellow onion skins in a saucepan. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Simmer 15-30 minutes. Add 2 teaspoons white vinegar. Strain and cool. Meanwhile, arrange one or two nontoxic flat leaves, ferns, fresh dill or parsley on blown or boiled eggs. Carefully cover the

egg with a piece of doubled cheesecloth. Gather the cloth snuggly, and tie with white string. Wrap several eggs. Set them in onion dye until desired reddish-brown shade appears. Remove from dye. Let dry before removing cheesecloth and plants. Here’s how to blow out the contents of eggs: Poke a small hole with a straight pin at each end of a washed raw egg. Carefully wiggle a toothpick or wooden skewer into one of the holes to break the yolk. Place a drinking straw over the hole on top, and blow through the straw, collecting the contents of the egg in a small dish. Rinse out the empty shell and let dry. Store in an empty egg carton. *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s award-winning television
