Q. Where were you born and raised? A. I was born in Torquay, I lived there until I went to university. After university I taught in Torquay for 12 years. Q. How long have you been mayor? A. Five years. Q. What has been your biggest accomplishment? A. I think since I’ve been on, I’ve helped make it possible for the group to work together. When I first got on council before I became mayor in 2001, it was a very divided council. We tend to work really well together; we only disagree on the policy things not personalities or stuff like that. Q. What are some things that still need to be taken care of? A. We’ve got a list for a

long time; very little work was done in terms of our infrastructure, so that’s one of the main things. We are in our seventh year of our 20-year replacement of water mains, we have cast iron water mains that tend to leak and one time we were up to $500,000 to $600,000 a year just to fix them. Q. What are some goals for summer 2010? A. Right around the corner here, they are remilling the road because that is where the trucks come from, and of course you end up with this big swales, so it’s very rough. From Souris right till Kensington, the boulevards in front of people’s homes are often not taken care of. We will be scraping off those boulevards and putting crushed stone in, that will make a nice difference with how it looks. We’ve got another area I think is important. There’s an intersection called Rooney Road and Kensington where we want to put lights and tied in with that, because there really is nowhere to walk along there, we’re doing a pathway in front of Wal-Mart, which will hookup with that intersection. Q. What are some pressing issues facing the City at this time? A. The streets are a neverending battle, I mean we are

Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter

I know this week readers will agree with the rants and ravings of Rose. The reason being, this week I chose a topic that dwells in the conscious and subconscious of every human being; this week I’m talking about bad drivers. Yes, it is no secret they’ve been around for eons and yes, they have managed to work themselves into the crevices of our nerves, but something has to be said to possibly curb the behaviour of another potential bad driver. What sparked my ignition this time was a common act of bad driving I have seen a few drivers actively engage in. I was pulling away from the curve at the banking corner on Fourth Street and 12th Avenue, and proceeded to merge with traffic and was advancing through the GREEN light ahead of me. A middle-aged woman was proceeding to make a left turn as I was quickly approaching the intersection. I remind you all that my light was GREEN. This woman had the audacity to first try and cut me off, then when she realized the stupidity of the decision she was about to make, she then began to honk and scream at me as if I had done something terribly wrong. Well, this was not the first time this situation had occurred with me and I have had just as much as I can take. First off, the next time, I will not bite my tongue. Why should those who continue to drive like they got their license at an amusement park, believe they have committed no wrong? The situation that day got to me, pushed every button I had. But let me be fair to those of you who may have committed an act of bad driving before. I do admit we all have those bad days where mishaps and mistakes can and definitely will happen, but don’t be the one whose ignorance gets the best of them. The incident I listed is but one of the million mishaps performed each day and I could go on with things such as making a right turn from the left hand lane, but I am certain we all get the idea.

This week the Trader takes readers back to the summer of 1988, after the judging of the Golden Garbage Can competition took place. The trophy, along with the championship title, remained in Weyburn that year. Today readers are encouraged to make a difference and rewrite the pages of history by proving just how beautiful Estevan really is. Each week the Southeast Trader Express tells us what has happened recently, but we'll also give you a look in to the distant past. If you have a photo you'd think the readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Rose Ditaranto at: rditaranto@estevanmercury.ca

Macoun takes step into its expanding future by opening new village office By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury

Macoun took a leap into growth on Saturday, as its new village office was unveiled to the public. “We sure needed it. We needed a new facility to service a small town that’s growing,” said Macoun mayor Stu Sovdi With the wear and tear of a building over 30 years old, repairs, and lack of laboratory facilities, it was long overdue. “Our old office did not have a washroom and there was no room to put one in. We had to go to the Macoun Co-op or service centre down the road,” said Carmen

Vicary, village town office administrator. Vicary added that the last office was also attached to the water treatment plant and every time a pump broke and a leak burst, the town office suffered as well. Sovdi said the old office was just too small and outdated. “It’s just a better way to serve our residents. We updated to get more modern with the times,” he said. Vicary agreed. In order to coincide with the growing infrastructure, the village office had to expand “to accommodate the growth of the town.” “We have more homes coming in, more lots are be-

Sovdi in terms of where Macoun stands growth-wise. Vicary said that for those who have lived in Macoun for all or most of their lives, this illustrates to them the fact that the community has the ability to flourish and

Toronto mom who fed baby cocaine since birth gives no explanation for her actions PROVINCIAL A Regina man was camping in his backyard with his nine- and five-year-old sons at their home on Halleran Crescent last Sunday when they were awaken by the sound of their van door opening. Grant Hughes saw four people attempting to break into his van at 4 a.m. and jumped the fence to chase after the villains. Hughes was able to grab one person as the three others fled. At first the teenager seemed calm as they waited for police to arrive. To Hughes’ surprise, the boy pulled out what Hughes described as a 10-inch blade and swung around and stabbed Hughes six times. Hughes was able to gain control of the teen when he grabbed his arm and shook the blade loose from the teenager’s grip. Hughes then flipped the boy over and held him down until police arrived. Hughes said if he did not gain control, he does not believe the boy would have stopped stabbing him. NATIONAL A 17-year-old mother and 37-year-old grandmother were arrested on Monday after a baby

girl was killed after she was mauled by two huskies. The 17-year-old is the infant’s mother and faces charges of criminal negligence. The baby was attacked in Saint-Barnabe-Sud, a small town about 70 Kilometres northeast of Montreal. The baby girl was in a car seat on the floor of her home when she was approached and later killed by the two dogs. The dogs did not belong to either the mother or grandmother but to a couple who shared the home with the women. The couple was not home at the time of the incident. The mother and grandmother were home but had stepped outside longer than they had anticipated to. When the women re-entered the house, the baby girl was dead. ••• A Toronto woman who was convicted last year of assault causing bodily harm, aggravated assault, failing to provide the necessities of life and administering a noxious substance has been identified as Tamara Broomfield. Broomfield was convicted after feeding her infant son, Malique, cocaine for more than a year straight.

The amount of cocaine Broomfield fed to her son was enough to classify him as a heavy user if he was an adult and has now left him permanently brain damaged. The identity of the mother was only revealed after the court lifted a publication ban at her sentencing hearing after a request was made by Malique’s father and grandmother. Malique’s father, Steve Fitz-Charles, said he wanted the ban lifted so the public would understand the reasoning behind why his son behaves he way he does. Fitz-Charles said he wanted his son’s name to be revealed so he can access the treatment he needs instead of being ridiculed. Malique is now developmentally delayed and has impulse control and attention disorders. He is now required to take Ritalin and other medication to control the possibility of seizures. Malique also suffers from a sleep disorder, cognitive difficulties and requires oneon-one supervision at school and home.

said to have been considered a high-risk, dangerous student at his high school. Mohamed Mahmood Alessa was removed from his local high school, North Bergen High, and was taught in a private

room at a public library with a security guard present. Alessa was born in the U.S. to Palestinian immigrants and was eventually placed on home instruction three months after transferring from an Islamic

high school in 2004. North Bergen High School spokesman, Paul Swibinski said it was not a specific incident or physical altercation that made Alessa dangerous, but rather a pattern of behaviour.

THE TRADER, Friday, JUNE 11, 2010

For Chris Henderson coming home never felt this good By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Home is where Chris Henderson’s heart is, and last Friday’s performance gave the artist a chance to reconnect with his roots. The former Estevan Idol winner, whose debut album, Follow the Signs, launched his country singing career into first gear, performed in the city at last weekend’s cabaret. Henderson said Estevan Idol was certainly a part of what started the path he is currently on. “I think it’s a really great thing, it helps a lot every time you have an opportunity to have your name in the media or perform in front of a crowd. “It’s just great exposure; a great opportunity to get a start,” said Henderson. Although Estevan Idol boosted Henderson’s identity in the music industry, it was the Country Talent Search in Regina where he got his first break. Henderson’s prize for his victory was the ability to record one country song. It was that very song that got him recognized and it wasn’t long after that the hit was picked up by radio stations. Henderson went on to record his first album, which he said has been scraped to the bone. “My first album has run its course. I’ve been do-

ing a lot of writing this year, I’m going to start a second album in February of next year, and hopefully it will be out by the end of next year,” he said. Henderson has also performed and still performs with some, bandmates, Daryl Carver, Tyler Wanner, Kylee Glover, Sean Hayward, Curtis Keller, Jason Hill and the late John Pain. Henderson said performing in Estevan could never get old because it’s always nice to come back home. “It’s wonderful; we have played in Estevan probably, at least a half a dozen times in the last three years. The more times that we play down there, the more people that come out and see us and the more support that we have gotten every time,” he said. Henderson added that it was great to have his home community get behind and support him. “I’m just excited to come back to Estevan and see everybody again.” Currently Henderson said he is performing, but not touring.

ENTERTAINMENT

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A plan you’ve kept on hold for a long time finally could be greenlighted. But in typical Aries form, you’ll need to be sure that everything is in place before you hit the “start” button. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Others might urge you to act more quickly on your ideas. But you’d be wise to follow your Bovine instincts and get more facts to bolster your position when you finally present it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might be tempted to accept the wellmeaning offer of a friend to act as an intermediary in a dispute. But you know best what it’s about, and you can handle the challenge. Good luck. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Entertainment can play an important role this week. Enjoy some wellearned diversion with people you care about. Something especially wonderful might come from this well-spent time. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Catnaps and playtime are in order for Leos and Leonas who need to take some time off from their hectic schedules to restore their energies and rebuild their mental muscles. Have fun. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Virgos will need to keep an open mind this week about choices that seem improbable. A closer study might well reveal possibilities that might have been overlooked. Stay with it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A disappointing outcome of a well-intentioned effort should be seen as a lesson in how to do it right the next time. Note all your changes and have your new plan set up by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Travel plans might need readjusting because of changes in the costs previously agreed to. Deal with the problem as quickly as possible to minimize any delays that might result. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your honest approach to an unsettling experience draws admiration from others. Use their positive feedback to build support for your program to introduce needed changes. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Travel is strong in your aspect this week, and so is nostalgia! You might want to consider planning a trip to a place that holds some very special meaning for you. Bon

voyage. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A job-related situation could provide an opportunity you hadn’t considered before. Look it over carefully and see where and how you can tailor it to fit your needs. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Showing strength as well as sympathy helps you deal with a difficult personal matter. It also helps you set an example for others when it’s their turn to get involved in the situation. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of making people feel comfortable without losing one whit of your own dignity in the process.

Rider Pride swept over the city last week and continued on to the weekend. From a friendly competition amongst schools as to who illustrated the most Rider pride, to a parade and carnival, Estevan lived, breathed, ate, slept, and bled green. Way to go residents you sure showed your team where your loyalty lies through green hair, green jerseys and apparel, decorated business windows, and Rider flags waving proudly in the wind. Now all you have to do is wait for game night when the Roughriders win the Grey Cup!

Strawberries -- The Perfect Summer Fruit Strawberries have been considered a tasty and nutritious treat for hundreds of years. Nutritional experts believe that strawberries are as close as you can get to a perfect fruit. They're low in calories (27 in 100g) and fat-free, but packed with nutrients, includingvitaminsand antioxidantsthatbringnumerous health benefits. Eating just five strawberries gives you more vitamin C than an orange. The vitamin content in strawberries drops quickly, so you need to eat them as soon as you can after they've been picked. Thestrawberrygotitsname from the common practice of growing berries under straw to protect them from winter cold and late spring frosts. A member of the rose family, the strawberrysometimesgivesoffa rose-likearoma.Manyspeculate about how the luscious fruit was discovered. It is known that the strawberry goes as far back as the Romans, and perhaps even the Greeks. The strawberry plant was originally grown in Northern Europe, but wild species also are foundinRussia,ChileandNorth America. At one time, wild strawberries grew everywhere from Canada to the Carolinas and westward beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Before modern refrigeration, a day of "strawberring" meant a long day of picking, followed by gorging on delicious strawberry treats -- pies, tarts, shortcake and all the ripe strawberries the family could consume. Berries that were not eaten were preserved as jam, jelly, sauce, strawberry vinegar andstrawberrytonic, amedicinal drink. The remaining berries were dried on flat rocks for several days. These dried berries would be used throughout the fall and winter in breads, cakes, puddings and porridge. The first American species of strawberry was cultivated in about 1835. Today, the strawberry is the leading small fruit crop in the U.S. It is farmed from Florida to Alaska, with the largest strawberry growing centers located in California and Florida. When picking or buying packages of strawberries, look for ripe, shiny and brilliantly colored berries without any soft or brown patches. Never buy strawberries that are green or hard, or that look dry, dull or wrinkled. When buying berries packedinabasket, checkthebottom to see if there is a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed. Always dispose of any berries that have signs of mildew or are rotten, as they'll contaminate the rest. Refrigerating strawberries ruins the flavor, and the strawberry aroma is easily picked up by other foods in the

refrigerator. Store the berries in acoolplace.Strawberriesshould be lightly rinsed, not washed, beforeserving, andeatenassoon as possible. This recipe for Strawberry Flower Cups is an easy way to serve fresh berries as a dessert or to use as a beautiful decoration. The strawberries are cut to resemble flower petals then stuffed with sweetened cream cheese. It's a cool, delicious way to showcase these beautiful berries! Preserving history for those who find treasure in what another deems trash By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury What one sees as a nuisance or a wasted space, another discovers a gem in the rubble, a diamond that shines so full of life past, present and future. Roche Percee Park was not only a place to host a family picnic, but it housed

native rituals and was home to many early settlers. Its rich history and fond memories are what continue to keep those like Mary Rose Boyer and Ingrid Beahm intrigued and dedicated to the park’s preservation. Boyer’s family has lived in Roche Percee for at least 150 years. She grew up listening to stories past of fond

You don’t find very many places nowadays where it’s uncultivated and you can just enjoy as it was. - Ingrid Beahm

times and long days enjoyed in the green space of the park. Boyer said it is through these memories that her passion for the land was fed. “I come from around here and I’ve always been interested in the history of the area because my family is part of it. “I grew up hearing stories about who did what, not gossipy stuff, but things I later learned at school that were a part of the history. I had this interest in history from the very beginning,” said Boyer.

For Beahm, who lived in the area for 29 years and whose grandmother and grandfather settled in 1911, the land is home and a part of who she has become today. When the park was decommissioned in the 1980s, it was heart wrenching for Beahm and left her and her family at a loss for words. “I think that I was devastated when the park was decommissioned because I go back to the day I remember my dad rushing down there on a Sunday morning to put lawn chairs and so on, on top of picnic tables, to reserve some for a picnic later on. You had to because this whole place would be full on a weekend,” said Beahm. As for Boyer, when she got wind of the bad news it was a little nauseating. “We heard rumours, maybe it was a little stronger than a rumour that the park was going to be fenced and used as grazing land. It made me feel sick,” she said. Boyer and Beahm agree that the land is so rich in its natural resources it would be a crime to deprive the youth of to-

day of what it can offer and its thick history. “It makes you feel good just to go down there and hear the birds sing. Even as it is now, you can sit there and get a kind of peace from being there even in the state it’s in. “Across the river is our historical sites, our sacred sites that are important to the First Nation’s people, so obviously it was a location that they revered as well,” said Boyer. Beahm said the peacefulness stems from some of the land that is

uncultivated and can be seen for its natural beauty. “We are looking for people to come and use the space again because it’s such a protected area, that so much of it is uncultivated, which means that it has rare plants and grasses and just that peaceful feeling that nobody has done anything with this. “You don’t find very many places nowadays where it’s uncultivated and you can just enjoy as it was,” said Beahm Until this very day residents in and around the area in the neighbouring towns and villages have not one

unsettling thing to say about their experience at the park; no one is left speechless when it comes to the sharing of better times, said Boyer. “All the people I talk to have a park memory to share,

something that they used to do either individually or as a family down at the park. I find that very encouraging to say the least. “You realize just how important this park was in

the past and what we are doing is trying to restore the park so that people will continue to have good memories about the park,” she said. Beahm said she has heard nothing but positive feedback

from residents who say they are all very excited. Both women are a part of South East Tours and Trails Inc., and have attained a lease from the government which allows them to continue to

operate the Roche Percee site as an unofficial green space open to the public, promote the use of the land to First Nations people as a sweat lodge and cultural camp, explore the future develop-

ment of an interpretive centre and regional museum, offer future tours of the area, and to explore the option of combining the park offerings with picnic sites and non-serviced overnight camping sites.

SPORTS

A faced paced weekend for the adrenaline junkie in all of us By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Racers geared up and pushed their pedals to the floor this past weekend, as they raced their way into the adrenaline counts of Estevan residents. Pure Energy Weekend proved to be pure excitement for the folks in the city. Whether it was motocross, the drag races or Estevan Motor Speedway’s second race of the season, the weekend was far from dull. “I think everybody enjoys the Pure Energy We e k e n d b e c a u s e i t ’s all about the races. A lot of people just come for the weekend,” said Judy Istace, motocross point keeper and racer. Estevan’s current motocross track has been up and running for four to five years now, said Istace, and the sport itself is a sight to see. “I think it’s just interesting to watch. It’s a neat sight to see them do what they do. It’s more than just going around in circles; it’s definitely a talent,” she said. Jim “Frosty” Forrest, drag racing president, said the weekend races gave local residents something to do and a chance to get out and have some real fun for the weekend, and out of town spectators a chance to witness what Estevan can offer. Drag racing in Estevan began in 2003 through those like Forrest, who have been interested in the sport for about 40 years. Forrest said the event is meant for those with the need for speed to release the urge in a safe and controlled environment. “It’s a positive thing for young people to come out and race their cars in a safe environment. “It brings people out to see and understand how it works. I feel it was very successful. I feel like we did a petty darn good job,” said Forrest. James Gustafson, Estevan Motor Speedway president, said Rider pride was prevalent with racers like Jim Harris who had his car custom designed with Roughrider decals. Gustafson said he could not have been more enthusiastic about the races this past weekend. “The stock cars were really fast and the guys that were in first and second place worked their way up to through the cars to turn their position, so it was pretty exciting. We had a great finish to the race,” he said. Although Gustafson

could barely contain his appreciation for last weekend’s races, he was a little disheartened by the lack of fans in the stands. “We were surprised that we didn’t get a larger turnout. The car count was decent but the fans had a very busy weekend. I guess with all that was going on and with the weather being so iffy, I think some of them decided not to take the chance. Our fan count was down some,” he said. Istace said she was actually surprised by the number of people who came out to the show. “The turnout was pretty good, the weather turned out good. We were a bit surprised because you never know, sometimes we have a good

Drag Racing Motorcross turnout and sometimes we don’t,” she said. Forrest said that based on their paid admission, excluding free ticket giveaways and such, drag racing had a fan count of 500 to 600. “It was excellent, we just had a really good day,” he said.

Going, going, GONE! 2010 Grey Cup tickets sold out after a week PROVINCIAL Regina golfer, Kent Eger qualified to play in the U.S. Open golf tournament on Monday. The U.S. open is set to start June 17 at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links and Eger said he couldn’t be more excited. Eger won a sectional qualifier at ColumbiaEdgewater Country Club in Portland, Ore., with a two-round total of eightunder-par 134. Eger, who is a regular on the Canadian Tour, lives in Scottsdale, Ariz. and fired a three-under 68 in the first of Monday’s two rounds, followed by a five-under 66 to earn him medalist honours. ••• The Roughriders put the 2009 Grey Cup loss behind them on June 6 as they opened up their main training camp at Mosaic Stadium. Six hundred watched last Sunday’s “spirited ses-

sions” – the first time the Riders were in shoulder pads and uniform since they lost the Grey Cup game 2827 to the Montreal Alouettes in 2009. It’s hard to fathom exactly what happened back in that 2009 game when the Alouettes fired back from a 27-11 fourth-quarter deficit to come out victorious. NATIONAL This year’s Grey Cup has yet to begin, but tickets for the highly anticipated game are already sold out. Just a week after tickets sales began, the Edmonton Eskimos told the public that all tickets that were available for the championship game at the Commonwealth Stadium Nov.28 were snatched. With all tickets sold five and a half months before the big game the Eskimos have set a record for the fastest sellout in the 98 years of the Grey Cup. •••

An injury is no match up against Toronto Argonaut Steven Turner, who one day after he ruptured his left Achilles tendon was seen on the field. The Argos’ slotback and running back took part in huddles and offered teammates words of encouragement that day. Turner said he “worked so hard for this” and it is not something he will give up on so easily. The 23-year-old “fell to the turf” during Monday’s practice and had to be carted off the field.
