Our Past

July 22, 1987

Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter

During my time here in the city one thing has caught my attention; one thing so common that it disturbs me. Drinking and driving seems to be part of the predefined norm here in Estevan. I have spoken to many-too many- people that have engaged in the illegal “sport.” Just recently I began attending court as part of my responsibilities here at The Mercury, and it just proves ridiculous how many people are appearing before the courts for the same thing: a DUI. Even more disheartening than the obscene amounts of drinking while impaired, is the lack of regret most of the accused portray. Some even have their friends join them in court and you can hear them snickering in the background. Let’s take a minute to grasp this concept. Drunk driving kills. It really is no joking matter and the insensitivity the crime receives is just beyond me. A few of these offenders have even committed this crime on more than one occasion, not learning from the mistakes of their pasts. The sad thing is most never learn of the gravity of this situation until it is too late. On a personal note, I know that when I make the decision to drink I immediately rule out driving. The thought of my car does not even enter my mind. I actually feel safer knowing it is parked and the keys are out of reach. There is no reason anyone should even consider the thought of driving while impaired. However, as any good opinion I will weigh in on the other side of the story as well. I have waited for a cab and the service is terrible. At one point I was told a cab would possibly be sent and they would do their best -the cab never came and we ended up walking home.

This week the Trader take readers back to 1987. Joanne Goulet was presented with a plaque for winning the Grundeen Ladies’ Open at the Woodlawn Golf Course. The musical theatre camp’s final presentation on Saturday at the Souris Valley Theatre had audience members applauding the remarkable presentation put on by participants.

‘Musical camp performance by kids was just wonderful’ By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury Souris Valley Theatre’s musical camp presentation last Saturday had audience members engaged the entire way through. Kids ages eight to 15 presented the acting skills, dance moves, and vocals they had learned during their week long camp. “Basically they presented the stuff that we worked on this week. We paired the kids up and

they presented some poems. Then they performed a song from the musical You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown called “Team and it all came together really well, said actor/performer Gillian Moon, camp coordinator. There were 15 participants in this year’s camp, which proved to be difficult at first, said Kevin Pownell, Moon’s assistant. “At first I thought it was going to be a bit too stressful trying to keep

all the kids organized and stuff like that, but as soon as they got more comfortable with us they warmed up to us, listened to us a lot better, and it was a good experience. “Because it was such a big group, there were 15 of us, we had to try to kind of split them up so we kept their attention and kept them having fun the whole time, said Pownell. Challenges did arise especially with the age differences said Moon, but

they were overcome. “Initially I found that the older kids were quite a bit more outgoing. We had some really shy young kids, but by the end everyone kind of worked together as a group. The older ones helped the younger ones and I think it worked out really well having all the ages there.

“It got really, really hot near the end of the week and four hours is quite a long time for some of these kids, so concentration sometimes could be a bit of a hurdle but we played a lot of games and kept them busy and gave them lots of breaks, said Moon. As for the overall

performance, both Moon and Pownell said they were not only impressed but excited. “I think it went great. The parents seemed to enjoy it and there was some laughs and lots of applause, said Pownell. “I think it was wonderful, added Moon.

‘Youths’ involvement in community helps shape a better future’ By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury

Being a youth in this day in age has progressively proven to be more difficult than even five years ago. With new drug, sex and violent temptations, it can be hard for kids to keep afloat. “I think if we can get kids involved and having some ownership of their community we are far more likely to see positive

impacts, said Jodi N., an Envision counsellor and public educator. The benefits of allowing children to feel involved and adhere to their needs creates endless possibilities for their future said Jodi. Jodi is also a part of a group called Investing in Youth, which meet monthly. “We meet with every youth category to see what their needs are, what they feel they are missing, and

we’ve seen the impact it has that they feel like they are being heard, that the adults are here and they are paying attention to what they feel. “I think there are multiple benefits. If the youth in our community feel more invested and more connected with the community, they are more likely to be positively involved, she said. Alicia Gooding, play park supervisor, said a benefit to getting involved in

the community at a young age is that it builds people skills for the future. “I think everybody needs to work with people they don’t know and feel a little uncomfortable so when you get older and you’re in the community working, you can relate to different people. I think it’s good for kids to be out of their comfort zone and learn something new, said Gooding. Jodi agrees that those who have an educated

sense of the community they live in grow into wellrounded individuals. “It contributes to a strong work ethic, it contributes to a sense of family on a bigger level. A lot of people in Estevan have been here a long time, their families have been here a long time, so being able to see a direct, positive result of things they are doing and feeling like everybody cares about them, not just immediate family. I think it’s going to help retain

people in this community, said Jodi. Listening to the needs and views of the youth in the community is sometimes something most adults ignore because of their own beliefs on what they think community youth should be doing. “I think as adults we have an idea of what we would like to see the youth in our community doing or what we suspect their interests might be, but speaking to the youth themselves it is really very different than we maybe would have anticipated. “As adults base what we think the youth would like or be interested in on our own experiences, as youth, and that is very different even if we’re five, 10 or 15 years out of being in the youth category. Things have changed drastically, said Jodi. With new technological inventions and the increase in youth’s accessibility to these advancements, it’s up to the adults to find ways of keeping kids engaged and providing them the knowledge of how to get involved. “We really have to be forward thinking in finding ways to attract the youth to more positive community focused activities, said

Jodi. When adults take the time to actually sit down and hear out the youth in the community, they will usually discover the appreciation kids have for someone who takes interest in what they have to say. “They have just been so flattered that some adults in the community have thought to ask their opinions and ask what they would want. “We can have an agenda of what things we think they would like to see, but without their input, chances are it won’t be successful, said Jodi. As for staying active, Gooding said the play parks and camps ran out of leisure services are a step in the right direction. “I find that a lot more kids today play video games than they used to and to get them outside in the fresh air and get some of that energy out is really good. I think it’s important for kids to learn new things and be able to experience that with new people. “With all my sports camps I’ve had a really good response. With the outside camps kids really want to learn new things and I think it’s good for Estevan, said Gooding.

‘Skateboarding not a means of acting out against the community’ By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury Skateboarding camp kicked off earlier this week with guest teacher and skateboarding competitor, Rick Milewicz. “He is actually pretty young, but he is really good with the kids and it’s good to have someone younger that they can relate to,” said Alicia Gooding, play park supervisor. The camp was run from Monday until Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and cost participants $25 to enroll. Milewicz, 15, was recommended to teach the camp by XS-IV, who picked him up two years ago and offered him a sponsorship. Milewicz has been skateboarding for four years and won his first competition his second year into the sport. He said what sparked his interest in skateboarding was the fact that it’s an independent sport. “I played hockey when I was younger and I didn’t like having to rely on other people. I was kind of a really independent person and with skateboarding it’s not like you have a coach on you saying you need to get this done. You set your own goals, you don’t have to work at anyone else’s pace. I just like the independency of it,” said Milewicz. The kids were taught the fundamentals of the sport during the three-day camp. “They’re learning the basics of skateboarding. How to properly balance, proper board maintenance, some tricks here and there. It’s just basically about your board, how to manipulate it

Gooding said that after speaking with Milewicz, he reassured her of his dedication not only to skateboarding but to helping others interested in the sport. “He says he’s more than willing to help kids even when they are not taking the camp,” said Gooding. “If they asked me to do it next year I would do it no

Milewicz said his main goal for the kids was to teach them that stereotypes attached to skateboarding are not true. “Skateboarding might have a reputation here known for being punks and misfits, so I want to show the younger kids to have a good attitude and show parents that skateboarding isn’t that bad of a thing,” he said.

After last Saturday’s game, the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ found themselves in poor field position that resulted from struggles with their punting and return games. Louie Sakoda punted five times for an average of 26.6 yards before coach Ken Miller said he had seen enough. “Louie was just having an awful day punting. Luca has punted reasonably well in his past, so I wanted to take some of the pressure off Louie and just figured the way to do that was to have Luca do that,” said Miller. Although Sakoda made no excuses for his performance, it was clear there had been certain factors that hurt his cause. “This wind here is always tough.” “We know that. We practise in it every day. Edmonton was bringing quite the rush - a few twists we haven’t seen. Feeling the pressure back there, it’s tough. When you get that sort of rush you’re always thinking about it. Coach felt I was a little bit rattled so Congi came in and took care of it. Hopefully I’ll be

NATIONAL A B.C. man made US$811,823 last Sunday and now waits to see if he can parlay that into $8.94 million. Matthew Jarvis of Surrey, B.C. is one of the November Nine, the finalists who have earned a seat at the final table of the World Series of Poker’s main event, which resumes in Las Vegas on Nov.6. “It’s pretty crazy. This is kind of every poker player’s dream. It’s nice that the dream has become a reality,” said Jarvis. •••

It looks like the Toronto Raptors have found their starting small forward. Matt Barnes tweeted a w a y o n M o n d a y, confirming reports that he will be joining the Raptors this year. The Raptors, having no room under the salary cap, will have to create a signand-trade deal to acquire Barnes from Orlando. However, without a deal officially announced, excluding Barnes’ tweets, fans should hold off on purchasing any Barnes jerseys just yet Remember it was just about one week ago that Tyson Chandler and Boris Diaw seemed destined for Toronto in a trade with

Charlotte, but the Bobcats scuttled that deal even after players received word and Chandler confirmed the deal publicly.

Oil field activity creates population boom in small town of Torquay By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury With a recent boom in oil field activity and cheaper housing, Torquay’s population is on the rise. “I think the population boom is from the lack of housing in Estevan and people seeing Torquay as a quiet place to live, and a lot of oil field activity in this area,” said Torquay mayor Mike Strachan. Strachan said he believes Torquay to be the perfect setting for those looking to purchase their first home or raise a family. “It’s actually a reason-

ably priced place to buy Mayor Mike Strachan says Torquay’s a house, so population has jumped from 183 to new fami- about 215. lies looking to buy their first house, they kind of look to here as the place to be. “It’s kind of a nice little change. I find that most of the people that have can, but they can also stay came from Alberta have out here and relax,” said commented on how they Strachan. However, with the find it so quiet and if they growing lack of amenities need to go into the city they

available to residents, Strachan said he hopes to see more businesses interested in opening up in Torquay. “We’re always looking

for businesses to open up in Torquay. I sure hope t h i s i s n ’t the way it’s going to be for a while. When you look at it we’re actually only 25, 30 minutes from Estevan, so it’s not all that far of a trip for people,” he said. Strachan said the increase in population builds opportunity for the town

to grow. “The more population, the more government funding we get to try and improve living for residents in he village here. It will give people another choice on where to live, where to come and start their lives.” In their last census, Torquay had 183 residents. Strachan said now he believes it has grown to about 210 to 215. “I think in any place there are always pros and cons to everything, so there probably is some uninviting stuff to Torquay, but we like to look on the positive out here,” said Strachan.

Nova Scotia man convicted of 13 sex crimes PROVINCIAL TD Bank Financial Group has reported that the record setting wet weather, which has taken the province by storm this spring and summer will put a damper on Saskatchewan’s economic growth this year. The report issued on Monday said that eight million acres will likely be left unseeded this year, which leaves the negative impact on gross domestic product growth in the province as large as two percentage points. However, crop insurance, government financial aid and reconstruction activity will help alleviate some of the dismay, the report said. ••• Basically everything but the kitchen sink littered the now empty campsites where the Craven Country Jamboree took place. Heavy rainfall prior to the jamboree created a mess for organizers and campers but did not seem to affect the high spirits of those who attended the summer festival.

“Once we got past the weather issues, it turned out to be a great weekend,” said Kim Blevins, director of marketing and communications for the festival.

NATIONAL Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh, a former Nova Scotia business man, has been convicted of 13 sex crimes committed against boys in the 1970s. MacIntosh faced a total of 26 charges of indecent assault and gross indecency involving three complaints. The charges against MacIntosh, 67, date back 15 years ago in a case that required prosecutors to extradite him from India. The three complaints filed this month stated that MacIntosh had repeatedly fondled and performed oral sex on them when they were between the ages of 11 and 14. The three men alleged that the incidents occurred back in the 1970s across Nova Scotia. MacIntosh admitted he had performed oral sex on two of he complainants in

his testimony, but added that they were older than the age of consent at the time and that it was consensual. ••• Devastation struck Twillingate, Newfoundland after news spread of the death of two well-known young brothers after a weekend boating trip accident off northern Newfoundland. “Everybody in the town of Twillingate knew these two young kids,” said Jack Troake, who fished the scenic but deadly waters off the northeastern coast for almost 60 years. Troake said the boys reminded him of the kids who grew up in the 1940s and ‘50s because they were always jumping in, doing stuff, helping out and bursting with energy. The bodies of the boys, who were age 10 and 12, along with a man believed to be in his 40s, were found Sunday after what was supposed to be a quick test run in a four-metre open boat.

A shooting on a northern Afghan military base on Tuesday left two American civilians and two Afghan soldiers dead. An Afghan soldier responsible for training others at the base outside of Mazare-Sharif opened fire during a weapons exercise. The shooter was one of the two Afghan soldiers killed. It is still unclear whether or not he was targeting someone or if bullets had gone astray. It is also unclear how many people fired weapons. ••• Experts and activists at a global AIDS conference warned that AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is

Early indications have shown that the number of people newly diagnosed with HIV has climbed again last year.

was down on one knee pointing a dark coloured umbrella at police when he was shot dead by an RCMP officer early Sunday. RCMP were responding to a domestic assault complaint at a home in Okotoks, south of Calgary, Saturday evening. Police believe they were confronted by a man with a shotgun; the man was the only one in the house. Police had found “written materials” in the 39year-old man’s home that suggested he was suicidal. The investigation concluded that the item the man had pointed at police was not a firearm at all and in fact was a dark umbrella with a silver tip.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes We steam and slice sweet potatoes and then give them a turn on the grill to create this deliciously unexpected side dish. 2 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled if you like 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper Parsley, for garnish 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered, direct grilling on medium. 2. In 5- to 6-quart saucepot or Dutch oven, place collapsible steamer basket and 1 inch water. Cover saucepot; heat water to boiling on high on range top. Cut sweet potatoes into 1/2inch-thick diagonal slices. 3. Place potato slices in steamer basket; reduce heat to low. Cover saucepot and simmer 12 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are just fork-tender; do not overcook. (Potatoes can be steamed a day ahead and refrigerated until ready to grill.) 4. Transfer potato slices to jellyroll pan; brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper to season both sides. Place potato slices on hot grill grate. Cover grill and cook potatoes 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly charred and tender, turning slices over once with large metal spatula. Transfer potatoes to serving bowl; garnish with parsley. Serves 4. • Each serving: About 245 calories, 4g total fat (1g saturated), 0mg cholesterol, 170mg sodium, 50g total carbohydrate, 6g dietary fiber, 3g protein. Smoky Grilled Tomatoes Use balsamic vinegar -- the salad dressing staple -- to add deep rich flavor to a cherry tomato side dish prepared on the grill. Tangy with hints of caramel, the versatile vinegar keeps indefinitely, and there’s no need to splurge on pricey, traditionally aged aceto balsamico: We tested this dish with a variety of regular supermarket brands, and it’s delicious. 2 pints cherry tomatoes, each cut in half 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 sprig fresh thyme 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1. Preheat outdoor grill on medium-high. On 30-inch by 12-inch sheet of heavy-duty foil, combine cherry tomatoes, vinegar, olive oil, fresh thyme and salt and pepper. 2. Fold in half and crimp foil edges all around to create a long, narrow sealed packet. Place packet on grill and cook 8 minutes. Serves 4. It’s no secret that many hardworking Americans are deep in debt, and some are just a paycheck or two from being homeless and on the street. Many dig themselves into a financial hole without even realizing it. Case in point, Tommy Myers, a 73-year-old retiree from Dayton, Ohio. Myers and his wife, Marcia, bought a modest home for $60,000. Their monthly payment was $526, which covered the mortgage, taxes and insurance. All went well until Marcia became ill. While wondering how they were going to cover her mounting medical bills, Myers was contacted by a man he sarcastically refers to as his “guardian angel,” a salesman for the consumer-finance giant Household Finance Corporation. The fast-talking salesman gulled Myers into a new mortgage that he claimed would solve their financial problems. With its hidden charges and confusing terms, what the new mortgage actually did was bump up the payment to more than $1,400 per month, which led to foreclosure. Myers and his wife, who now live in a seedy trailer park, are fairly typical of the casualties brought about by shady subprime mortgages. Author Gary Rivlin, who has written for The New York Times, Newsweek and Wired, investigates the flourishing poverty business in his new book, “Broke, USA.” It is a disturbing look at trends that have become commonplace in America since the Great Crash of 2008. Rivlin says the tough economic times have become an opportunity to expand and grow for mercenary entrepreneurs who have taken advantage of an era of deregulation to devise high-priced products to fleece the credit-hungry working poor. These include instant tax refunds, payday loans and check-cashing outlets. If you’ve wondered why our country is in such an economic mess, this gut-wrenching expose provides many of the answers. Asian Noodles Peanut butter isn’t just for kids’ lunchboxes anymore! It adds protein and flavor to family meals from breakfast to dinner. 12 ounces fettuccine 1 package (10 ounces) shredded carrots 1 package (6 ounces) snow peas 1/2 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup low-fat ginger vinaigrette 1. In saucepot, cook fettuccine as label directs, adding carrots and snow peas during last 2 minutes of cooking. Reserve 1/2 cup cooking water; drain fettuccine mixture. 2. In same saucepot, blend peanut butter, vinaigrette and reserved cooking water. Add fettuccine mixture; toss well. Serves 4.
