Outram – Torquay district happenings Submitted by Betty Ribling The first major event of the 2014-15 season for the Estevan Mermaids synchronized swimming club was held in North Battleford in late November. A skills development camp led by Synchro Canada was held on Nov. 22. That evening at the awards banquet, the Mermaids captured three trophies. Rebecca Duncan was awarded a trophy for most improved recreational athlete. Good job Rebecca. Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Roger Bezaire. Mr. Bezaire was born at Torquay. He

She completed the program with first class honours with distinction with a mark of 94. Her vocal teacher is Meagan Miller of Estevan who was also in attendance to see Rebecca receive the award. Bruce and Margaret Duncan and children and Barry and Doreen Duncan also attended the awards and reception that followed at the University of Regina. Congratulations Rebecca. Many Outram-Torquay residents attended the Festival of Trees event on Nov. 29 at Affinity Place. This is a fundraising event for St. Joseph’s Hospital. The meal was good and the entertainment was exceptional. I had

passed away on Nov. 26 at St. Joseph’s Hspital in Estevan at 93 years of age. Prayers were held Nov. 28 in the chapel at Hall Funeral Services. Funeral mass was on Nov. 29 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Estevan with Rev. Brian Meredith officiating. Mr. Bezaire farmed for many years in the Outram area. He was an exceptionally good neighbour and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. On Nov. 29, Rebecca Duncan was awarded the 2014 Royal Conservatory of Music gold medal. She received the top Grade 1 voice award in Saskatchewan.

the privilege of sharing a table with a former student, Leah Skjonsby formerly of Torquay. She was my Grade 5 student when I taught at Torquay. I was delighted to see her. There are many rewards in teaching. Congratulations to Paul and Stacey Mantei on the birth of their baby girl, Joylynne Emmarie Mantei, who arrived on Nov. 26. Joylynne weighed in at seven lbs., 13 oz. She has five brothers and one sister. Grandparents Wilma and Terry Mantei and great grandparents Lois Mantei and Henk and Johanna Lievaart are excited with the new arrival.

Embrace the true meaning of the holidays this year A wave of hilarity has ensued on social media surrounding a little $6 package received by thousands of people across the world that contained a dried up block of feces. I don’t know how to rewrite that first sentence without making it sound less awful, so I’m just going to move forward with my head held sort of high. The administrators responsible for the popular Kickstarted multiplayer party game known as Cards Against Humanity, a game anyone can order and print off to create their own cards for custom made fun, created a link to an online store with only one item for sale. That item was the aforementioned $6 package with the word “bullsh*t” on the side. Of course, people expected something special to come with the package, not what was advertised on the side of the box, which in case you’re wondering, was in fact, sterilized. A lot of the consumers who bought the package were big fans of Cards Against Humanity and got a good laugh when they discovered the true nature of their online purchase. Pictures of their brown trophy were posted on Twitter with an acknowledgement of the fact that they’ve been duped. Then there were those who actually got upset. Cute. When I read this story I laughed, but not for as long as I thought I would. It was obvious Cards Against Humanity was aiming to mock holiday consumerism - and mock it they did, bravo - however the painfully predictable way thousands got hooked into buying something that was cheap even when confronted with a clear as water message describing the contents of the box, was slightly disturbing. I don’t want this to sound too much like

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling the annual obligatory anti-consumerist rant, but in the light of the recent trap, which too many people fell for, it’s completely worth revisiting what society has turned our holidays into, despite a lot of our best efforts to keep it genuine, heartfelt and focused on family. A more prevalent problem in larger communities, no doubt, the holidays have become this toxic fog that clouds people’s sanity, turning them into, quite literally, stampeding animals that care for nothing but the 60” wide-screen with a $500 price drop that waits for them at the back of a store. For many, the holidays are nothing but a chore that requires them to dish out X amount of dollars to X number of people, while those who don’t see it as a chore bask in the light provided by the corporate market and obsess over the products they have on sale. It makes no sense saying that purchasing a large TV for someone you love is a terrible thing to do, but there are monsters out there who have literally killed for something that was on sale. It’s why certain people are so turned off by it all that they simply try to ignore the fact that the holidays exist. Some friends of mine are involved with the large family routine, which often consists of the always-interesting massive family dinners and

secret Santas. When these stories are recited, they’re frequently focused on the annoying family member who acted inappropriately during dinner or the how an aunt lost it when she saw her niece’s new piercing. As frustrating as those moments may be, that is what Christmas is about. The energy leading up to these moments of togetherness is so strong because it’s not every day you get to duke it out with your aunt, or more importantly, hug it out with everyone in your family. I grew up with a very small family. Our holidays were short and sweet and always spent together. I do wish I got to experience the large family get togethers, because the spirit of the holidays thrives in those scenarios, but I do appreciate the time our little trio spent under one roof during the holidays. In smaller communities like Estevan - when compared with places like Toronto - I feel like we’re some tiny rebellious force isolating ourselves from the wave of poison that tends to seep into a time of year that is in dire need of a marketing makeover. I recently covered a Christmas concert in Macoun, and the thunder of applause following each performance took me by complete surprise. Not because the performances were poor, they were super charming actually, it was because I was expecting people to be staring at their phones or catching up on sleep. It was the first time since I was a part of a Christmas concert as a little kid that I went to something like this, and even though I didn’t stay for the whole thing, the small taste I got lasted a long time. Entering a packed auditorium with so much positive energy was a holiday gift I think a lot of people could use.

LIMITED TIME OFFER!

with Brady Johnson Owner of Encompass Fitness and Yoga Studio

Get what you want for the holidays today..

How would you define yoga?

I would describe it as an all-encompassing activity that strengthens the physical body as well as the overall wellness of the human being. It uses breathing to induce relaxation through the mind and then transforms that with physical poses. The body goes through lots of different poses that help develop strength and flexibility and even healing.

What are some misconceptions surrounding yoga?

I think the biggest one that you need to be really flexible or very fit to participate. In reality you just have to be able to breath. There are so many variations of yoga. You can do yoga with seniors, there’s chair yoga, there are just so many purposes for yoga. Anyone of any age and ability can actually do this. For a while a lot of men thought yoga wasn’t for them. The stereotypical walls have broken down a bit.

What is your favourite part about it?

As a teacher I like to see the effects of yoga. It’s nice to be able to see students’ mental state improve after classes. You can really tell that someone has benefitted from a class, they’re so much more calm and at peace. Yoga uses the mind so much and that allows you to become in tune with your body and mind. The calming aspect that comes as a result are really big.

Page 7

Why do pro athletes turn to yoga?

Yoga is a great complement for athletes, especially since their personality is often ‘go go go,’ and very highintensity and strength-based. Yoga is a great way for them to focus on flexibility and their mental state. The mental aspect of a game is so important. In fact, I do yoga with the Bruins here in Estevan.

Candidates for community constable positions still being processed By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

It’s still unclear if Estevan’s RCMP will be receiving a community constable, but according to RCMP Sgt. Cate Rigaux, people who have applied to become one will likely enter the field by early summer 2015. “The candidates are in the security

clearance phase, which will be followed by training,” she said. “That’s expected to start in the New Year and depending on which applicants are successful will determine what community gets these community constables.” In an interview with the Southeast Trader in February, when the community constable pilot program was first

announced in Estevan, Rigaux said these special members will be in the schools as liaisons, visible as traffic officers and attending council meetings to hear concerns and feedback from citizens in different towns. Like the recently announced community safety officer program that has produced complementary law enforcement in communities like North Battleford that deal with low-risk crime, community

constables won’t replace existing RCMP members. Rigaux said each community constable would be employed for one year under the pilot program before it is assessed. She said if the pilot program is ultimately abandoned after that first year, the RCMP will try to find a position for the community constables elsewhere in the force, or have interested people complete training to become constables.

The 16 girls who participated in Pretty Tough on Dec. 12 and 13 created posters explaining why feminism is important to them.

A weekend for the girls By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

There’s never a bad time for a get together that involves making new friends, having fun and talking about feminism. Pretty Tough: A Celebration of Beauty and Strength, organized by Envision Counselling and Support Centre was spearheaded by one of its counselors Lorelei Lachambre, who arranged for some of the extra funding Envision received from the Quota Club of Estevan to go towards a two-day rental of the Metochos Camp where the sleepover was held. She said this was Envision’s first time running the camp and the idea of running a two-day camp for girls was a “no-brainer,” considering her previous experience running a variety of leadership camps. “The camp is for teenage girls coming together and talking about girl power, self esteem and body image,” Lachambre said. “We had a big discussion about feminism and why we should support it, what it means to them and why equal rights for women are important.” The event ran Dec. 12 and 13 and included a number of activities for the 16 girls in Grade 9 and 10 who attended. Following some introductory games on Friday, Envision art therapist Allyson Fisher paid a visit and made a big presentation about expressing oneself through art. Owner of Encompass Fitness in Estevan, Brady Johnson, came in to teach the girls some empowering yoga and talk about the importance of being active. “Fitness is about keeping active

physically, mentally and spiritually,” she told her audience on Saturday morning after the girls had breakfast. All the food was funded through the Access Communications Children’s Fund. Johnson recited some personal stories and experiences she endured as a young girl and stressed the importance of setting goals. “Women empowerment is important,” she said after her presentation. “I’m really happy to be a part of this.” Envision counselor Skylar Gunderman also made a presentation about self-care, dealing with stress and selfesteem, which was followed by a discussion led by cyber violence project co-ordinator Juli Dzuba about the many issues surrounding cyber violence. Lachambre wrapped things up with a presentation on body image. Lachambre said there were initial concerns surrounding the number of girls who would sign up. “It’s not an easy sell,” she said. “It’s not like basketball camp where you go in and develop a certain skill.” The turnout, however, was close to the maximum number of girls the camp was able to hold, which was 20. A big highlight from Pretty Tough, Lachambre said, was the girls’ retelling of popular Disney movies that involved damsels in distress, but rather than act out the princess in peril scenario, they flipped things around and turned the female characters into the heroes. “The girls really get it,” she said about the young group’s understanding of feminism. Avery Wheeler, a Grade 10 student from Estevan Comprehensive School took a moment to speak with the Southeast Trader after Johnson’s yoga class and said she really appreciated the atmosphere provided by the event. “Everyone is different and there is nothing wrong with that,” she said. “It’s not a judgmental place, and I’ve met a lot of new people.” Lachambre said she is interested in organizing a similar event for girls in Grade 7 and 8, or girls in their senior years of high school.

Provincial News

Health card renewal required by Dec. 31 Residents with provincial health coverage who have not received their health card renewal stickers in the mail are encouraged to contact eHealth Saskatchewan before Dec. 31. The stickers validate health cards for a three-year period from Jan. 1, 2015, to Dec. 31, 2017. “Saskatchewan health cards ensure people are covered for a variety of medical services,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said. “We want to make sure all residents have an up-to-date sticker on their health cards so their health coverage is not interrupted.” Residents who have not received their renewal packages in the mail should update their personal information at www.ehealthsask.ca

Residents can also come to eHealth Saskatchewan at 2130-11th Avenue, Regina, to receive their renewal sticker or call 1-800-667-7551. eHealth’s hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 24 and 31. The most common reason for people not to receive their renewal stickers is because they have moved and not updated their address with eHealth. This year, eHealth Saskatchewan mailed health card renewal stickers to more than 689,000 households in the province between Sept. 15 and 30. For more information on health benefits, visit www. health.gov.sk.ca/health-benefits
