Kate-Lee Donohoe

“Our public computers are very popular. We have about 12 and I’d say they’re fairly busy all the time, especially after work until closing. People come in and they can check their email. Especially with the industry we have, the oil workers who are just new to Estevan and don’t have internet in their place yet can come here and use ours. We also have wireless in the library, so a lot of people are bringing their laptops in as well.”

One-on-one with Brian Rodgers Kate-Lee Donohoe grew up on a dairy farm just outside of Brandon, Manitoba. In Brandon, she completed a business degree from Brandon University, and then went to Halifax to complete her Masters in Library and Information Studies at Dalhousie University. Now, Donohoe is the Branch Manager at the Estevan Public Library, where she has worked for the past year. You grew up in Manitoba, and then finished school all the way in Halifax. How did you end up in Estevan? “I lived out there (Halifax) for two years, and I loved living on the coast, but I missed the prairies, so I wanted to come home. I think just being a farm girl I wanted to come home to be close to my family – and Estevan’s only two-anda-half, three hours from Brandon. So, it was just the right job at the right time, that’s how it worked out. The branch manager position – which is the same as librarian – opened up here, so I applied for it.” Tell me a little bit about the schooling that one goes through to become a librarian. “It’s a two year master’s program and you have to have a degree to go into it. At Dalhousie it’s called Masters in Library and Information Studies (MLIS). When you go to library school you can work in a public library, a law firm, or a medical library, anything like that, so they kind of just teach you a broad scope of things, like how to catalogue books,

what kind of books to order and stuff like that so you can go and work in any library, essentially.” I assume there’s a lot more to being a librarian than a lot of the public realizes. What are some of your duties? “We always make jokes at headquarters that we wear a bunch of hats. So, we do a lot of different things. I look after the advertising, the staff and personnel, the HR, I oversee all of the programs that my two co-ordinators work on, I go out in the public, I do marketing, I speak with city council about budget – it’s more than just ordering books (laughs).” How many people do you reckon come through the library, or use the library’s services on a daily basis? “We have a customer counter, and on busy days we see probably upwards of 250 to 300 people. Especially when we have programs or kids activities going on we see a lot of foot traffic in here. The public computers are busy too – a lot of people come in and use those. The children’s programs like story-time and toddler-time see a lot of kids coming in, and parents bring the other kids as well. If kids are down at the pool swimming we see a lot of traffic as well.” With a lot of information being online and easily accessible from a computer these days, do you ever feel like the library is becoming obsolete or dated? “I get asked that question a lot. I don’t think it is. I think we’re just changing

You also mentioned that there are public computers available within the library – do a lot of people use them?

Recently all of the Saskatchewan libraries grouped together under one provincial library card. Can you explain what that’s all about?

with the times. Just two months ago we launched e-books, so now people can download books, but you have to have a library card to do it, and it’s free still. So, if we’re not sending out hard copies, we can still get in e-books. It’s changing, but I don’t see the libraries dwindling or anything.” What else are you doing in the library to keep it up to speed with technology? “Here in the library we offer “Tech Tips with Taren,” (Taren Trew, adult program co-ordinator) so anybody can come in here and get one-on-one sessions with her with any computer questions – hard or complex. We try and do at least one technology program a month, whether it’s learning how to use excel, or learning how to do Christmas letters online, or clipart, or downloading your pictures. So, we do try to focus our programs to have some technology in them.”

“It’s called the Saskatchewan Information and Library Services Consortium (SILS), and basically the line is “one province, one card” – so if you have say a Regina card, and you want to come sign out a book, you can sign it out at the Estevan library, go back to Regina for the weekend, read it, finish it, and still drop it off in Regina. Anywhere you are in the province, as long as you have a card, you can use any of the services. How is that going over with people? “It’s very popular. A lot of people are really liking the service, and they’re also finding the books they want a lot quicker because they have access to 315 libraries now across the province. So, if you have a hold on a book, chances are there’s probably 20 copies of it, instead of two like before.”

Trucks I think that I’m going to save up all of my pay cheques from the Mercury and put them away so that someday, when I’m all grown up, I can buy myself a big, sparkly, four-wheel-drive truck to get me to places I need to go. Namely, 1) the golf course on sunny days, because I need the box to haul my single bag of clubs; 2) work, because I need tons of torque and jacked up hydraulics in order to navigate through flat-except-for-pot-holes Estevan; and 3) the gas station, because driving around with this much style requires me to hit the pumps every three days. Tonaya Marr I personally fail to see the point of owning an oversized truck if all you Estevan Mercury Reporter need it for is to get home and back every day. They make cars for that. I’ll admit that the winter weather can get pretty nasty, but with a reasonable amount of common sense, it’s fully possible to get around Saskatchewan on a winter day in a car. At one time it was a case of ranch hands coming off the range to compete in events they knew well because they did it every day. But, does it still hold relevance today? The same questions certainly apply when a cowboy slips off a horse and yanks a steer’s head around until it is forced to the ground. There are those who will suggest the event shows people an aspect of ranching. Is it an aspect that puts a good light on the business of raising cattle though? It’s not that ranchers should be ashamed of what they do to care for their stock, but that doesn’t mean it is good public relations to flaunt some of the more violent aspects of it, and make no mistake about it, steer wrestling and calf roping are violent. The rodeo question becomes more focused a year like this, a year where six horses died at the Calgary Stampede, five of those in chuckwagon and rodeo events. Rodeo and the west have always seemed synonymous, but In most cases a cowboy climbing on the back of a horse or increasingly there is pressure on the sport from those who are bull isn’t going to cause great trouble for the animals. Macoun woman makes one-of-a-kind birdhouses out of recycled items By Brian Rodgers of The Mercury

The Estevan Farmers’ Market is the place to go if you’re interested in buying neat, interesting, or tasty products with that special homemade or homegrown touch that you just won’t find in a department store. The oneof-a-kind items sold at Doris and Gordon Geske’s booth are all of the above and more. The Geskes, who own a ranch just west of Macoun, offer up homemade baking, gift baskets, key chains, denim purses, and many other personalized items. But perhaps the main attraction at the Geskes’ booth is the array of handcrafted rustic birdhouses Doris makes out of recycled lumber, branches and deer antlers. “I always have enjoyed doing woodwork and it gives me a way to use my creativity and to express it in a different way, and it’s kind of evolved – I started off making simple pattern birdhouses and got a hold of some log lumber from my brother-in-law and started working with that and finding different ways of using it, said Doris, who has been a fixture at the farmers’ market for the

past three years. “I like to reuse stuff and make use of simple stuff. I don’t want to go out and buy new wood, I want something that looks

to knock together the basic box, but when I start putting the branches on, it takes longer to do that. It has to be the right one, and you try this and you try that. I find a lot of times you can’t stop too soon. Sometimes it won’t look right. I’ll have a birdhouse that I really think is ugly until I start putting the finishing stuff on and I’ll say ‘oh yeah, now I like it,’ said Geske, who works as an education assistant during the school year. Setting up a booth at the Estevan Farmers’ Market has also helped the husband and wife duo reach out to customers traveling through the Energy City from all over Canada and the United States, which Geske said is one of the reasons she likes coming back. The bird house buyers are often as unique as the bird houses and cater to different individuals’ preferences. “It’s interesting – sometimes she’ll end up carrying a birdhouse for a couple of years and then the right person comes along and that’s the one they want, said Gordon, who’ s been happy to support his wife over the years, buying woodworking tools

“Some people like to go away for a weekend – well, this is what I like to do, this is my getaway, to go out to my workshop,

and setting up a workshop for her. For Doris, the love of creating and and the ability to socialize with buyers from across North America is bound to keep her coming back to the Estevan Farmers’ Market for years to come. “Some people like to go away for a weekend – well, this is what I like to do, this is my getaway, to go out to my workshop, she added.

Doris (front) and Gordon Geske have been setting up their booth at the Estevan Farmers’ Market for the past three years. Doris creates unique bird houses made from recycled lumber, branches and antlers.

- Doris Geske older – to me that’s more appealing. Because deer antlers aren’t necessarily readily available, when Geske’s supply began to run out, she worked out a deal with a member of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. In exchange for more deer antlers, Geske offered to trade him her bird houses, for use as raffle items. Now Geske has no trouble gathering antlers, which she says make great perches on the bird houses. The antlers are also a selling point and eye catcher for hunting enthusiasts, Geske said. There’s an art to the bird houses as well – each one has its own unique look and It’s not just a matter of throwing together the house and then adding branches and antlers. “It doesn’t take long

• If you’re a sailor you’re probably familiar with the hazards of being out on the water: high seas, storms, hidden reefs. You probably wouldn’t count whales among the dangers, but you’d be wrong. It seems that on a recent day sail

out of Table Bay Harbor in South Africa, a couple on a 30-foot sailboat were whale-watching when one got too close for comfort. A 40-ton whale they had been viewing breached right next to the boat and landed on the deck, breaking off the mast and then thrashing around before sliding back into the water. The whale lost some skin and blubber, but was otherwise unharmed; the couple were lucky to still

have a seaworthy craft and made it safely back to the harbor. • Statistics show that the average 5-year-old boy today weighs about 10 percent more and the average 5-yearold girl about 8 percent more than children of the same age in the 1980s. • Those who study such things say that the word “daisy” started out as “day’s

ARE SATURATED FATS HEART HEALTHY? Written By The Public Health Nutritionists of Saskatchewan With the Support of Population Health Promotion, Sun Country Health Region Recently reviews of studies are questioning whether saturated fats are bad for your heart. Does this mean the guidelines for heart healthy eating have changed? Heart healthy nutrition recommendations are based on how different types of fats affect cholesterol levels in the blood. LDL or “lousy” cholesterol and triglycerides tend to clog up arteries and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. HDL

or “healthy” cholesterol helps clean up arteries and decreases the risk of heart disease and stroke. What can we do to change our blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels? * Choose foods with monounsaturated fats. These fats lower total and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and increase HDL cholesterol. * Choose foods with polyunsaturated fats since these fats lower LDL cholesterol. * Choose foods with omega 3 fats. These polyunsaturated fats lower LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure and may improve HDL cholesterol. * Eat fewer foods with saturated fats since these

fats increase total and LDL cholesterol. * Avoid eating foods with trans fats since these fats increase LDL cholesterol and decrease HDL cholesterol. What are the main food sources of the different types of fats? Polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and omega 3 fats are found in non-hydrogenated vegetable margarine and oils, nuts, seeds and fish and their oils. Saturated fat is the main fat found in fatty meats, high fat milk products, butter, lard, palm and coconut oils and some processed foods. The most harmful trans fat is in processed foods that list “partially hydrogenated” vegetable oil or shortening as an ingredient. These fats are chemically altered or

“hydrogenated” to make them similar to lard and butter in cooking and baking qualities. Simply reducing saturated fat intake does not appear to decrease the risk of heart disease. The nutrient that replaces the saturated fat is more important. Replacing saturated fats with healthier polyunsaturated

vegetable fats and/or whole grains, decreases the risk for heart disease. On the other hand, replacing saturated fats with refined carbohydrates (white flour, sugar) does not decrease the risk of heart disease. Heart disease risk increases if foods with saturated fat are replaced with processed foods high in trans fat. Based on these

findings, more studies need to look at which foods are best when they replace saturated fats. Bottom line: The guidelines for a heart healthy diet have not changed. Follow Canada’s Food Guide and choose foods that contain non-hydrogenated fats and oils to decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke.

not for sale, I would like to know its approximate value. -- Fern, Sun City, Ariz. A: It’s a shame that you don’t have the complete sideboard since the piece that you have is handsome and an intact item is always worth the most. I suspect you are right about it being oak and think it was crafted sometime during the

early decades of the past century. I have seen similar items sell in shops and at flea markets in the $75 to $150 range. *** Q: I have two perfume bottles, one large and one small. The smaller one still has contents. Is there any value to these bottles? -- Marie, Howell, Mich. A: You have asked me a question that is impossible to answer. It’s a little like asking if an old car has any

value. If it is a 1925 Stutz Bearcat, the answer is yes. On the other hand, if it is a Ford Pinto that has seen better days, probably not. Some perfume bottles are, indeed, collectible. For example, a limited issue “Scarlette O’Hara” bottle by Pinaud is currently selling for about $75. Other bottles by such makers as Lucien Lelong, Gidding, Caron, Coty, Elizabeth Arden and Avon also are popular with collectors. To find out the value of

your bottles, you might want to consult a good price guide. I recommend The Antique Trader Perfume Bottle Price Guide by Penny Dolnick, available at www.amazon. com for $14.99. *** Q: I have an Emmett Kelly collection that includes several limited editions. Where can I sell them? -Cheryl, Southbury, Conn. A: The market for massproduced instant collectibles is rather stagnant in the pres-

memorable NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers, it’s a good time to revisit one of the key segments of the longtime rivalry. And if you were a fan of basketball during the 1980s, then reading “When the Game Was Ours” will be like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket of memories. Sportswriter Jackie MacMullan does a great job of letting NBA greats Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Larry Bird tell the story of their time in the league, when they helped push it to newfound

levels of success. The book (which makes a great companion piece to Seth Davis’ “When March Went Mad”), reveals how much it galled Bird to lose to Johnson in the 1979 NCAA championship game. The pair took the NBA by storm that same year, yet they would not meet in the NBA Finals until 1984, when Bird’s Celtics beat Johnson’s Lakers in seven games, a victory that prompted Bird to tell a teammate: “I finally got him. I finally got Magic.” Johnson would turn the tables the next season, and he would win one more against Bird in 1987.

Between them, Johnson and Bird captured eight of the 10 NBA championships during the ‘80s, but the crux of their relationship was an unrelenting drive to be better than the other person. Such an approach left little room for friendship, but a commercial filmed in 1985 featuring both stars helped them forge a new bond, one that continued to grow through their respective retirements and the 1992 Summer Olympics into the friendship they share today. Magic and Bird simply go together, then and now. MacMullan helps capture the

rivalry that fueled the best basketball many fans say they have seen. Michael Jordan is often proclaimed as the greatest NBA player ever, but he lacked the suitable foil that Johnson and Bird had with each other, and the Lakers and Celtics still have today. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
