Chocolate tasting a hit at the EPL chocolate tasting program, Trew’s answer was straightforward: “Because I couldn’t do wine tasting,” she laughed. “I’ve had lots of requests for a wine tasting, but we can’t do that here, so we went with the chocolate tasting. I knew a little bit about chocolate to start with so I thought this would be a lot of fun.” On the whole, Trew said her food programs are always well attended. The fact that the participants got to taste something

By Brian Rodgers of The Mercury You know that snap you hear when you break off a piece of a chocolate bar (be it Kit-Kat or Dairy Milk, etc.)? Well, did you know that the crispness of that snap is an indication of the quality of the chocolate? On Saturday afternoon at the Estevan Public Library, about 30 local residents learned about this tasty tidbit as well as several other facts about chocolate and chocolate tasting during “a taste of chocolate,” a program put on by the library’s adult program co-ordinator Taren Trew. During the hour-long program, Trew taught those in attendance about the history of chocolate, where it comes from, how it’s made and also the politics behind the manufacturing of chocolate. Oh, and of course, the program wouldn’t be complete without a little bit of chocolate tasting. The lucky registrants were treated to five different chocolate bars (and not the candy bar variety), from different parts of the world with varying amounts of cocoa content. Trew had on hand Cadbury Dairy Milk, Cocoa Camino Milk Chocolate, Cocoa Camino Dark Chocolate, Endangered Species Natural Dark Chocolate with Raspberries and Aequare Fine Chocolate Single Origin

as universally-loved as chocolate couldn’t have hurt either. “I was so impressed with the turnout. I had enough chocolate that we could’ve done up to 40 people, but 30 was awesome, and it’s great to see this many people and such a variety of people. I’d say, maybe a third of the people here today were my normal program goers that come to a lot of our stuff, so it was good to see a lot of different people out to take part in the program.”

Money Problems?

Start Fresh. We Can help. Estevan Public Library adult program co-ordinator Taren Trew shows off the five varieties of chocolate that participants had a chance to taste during “a taste of chocolate” on Saturday. Ecuadorian Chocolate. The chocolate in the Cadbury and Endangered Species varieties, although very different, originated in Cote d’Ivoire. African countries like Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana are the two largest producers of chocolate in the world. Other countries located within 20 degrees of the equator are also major chocolate producers. The Cocoa Camino and Aequare chocolates were

produced in Dominican Republic and Ecuador, respectively. The secret behind chocolate tasting, as hard as it can be, is allowing the chocolate to fully melt in one’s mouth, rather than immediately biting and swallowing. When the chocolate melts and coats the tongue, it comes into contact with all of the various taste buds, and as such, the person doing the tasting is better able sense

all of the subtle flavours within the chocolate, aside from just the typical taste we all immediately associate with chocolate. The participants were quite surprised by a number of the flavours they could taste when they allowed the chocolate to melt in this way: fruit, wood, nuts and even subtle hints of tobacco and hot spice. Perspective Mr. Rodgers’ Neighbourhood Brian Rodgers Estevan Mercury Reporter

Arguing with crazy people There’s an hilarious line in the movie Napoleon Dynamite that I thought would work as a seamless introduction to my rant for this week. At one point in the movie, the high school principal is talking to Pedro, a new student from Mexico, one of Napoleon’s few friends. Pedro had run into a little bit of trouble after creating a pinata made to resemble one of the school’s most popular girls - not a very nice girl either, mind you - and, although this was quite a hit amongst all of the geeks and misfits at the school, it didn’t impress the principal. The line goes, “Look, Pedro, I don’t know how they do things down in Juarez, but here in Idaho we have a little something called pride. Understand? Smashing in the face of a pinata that resembles Summer Wheatley is a disgrace to you, me, and the entire Gem State.” Without quoting any more of the movie (although I’d really like to), I’ll now turn the floor over to Reverend Terry Jones. If you’re not familiar with Mr. Jones - he’s crazy. Well, more specifically he’s that uber-Christian fundamentalist who (somehow) made headlines all over the world in the days and weeks leading up to Sept. 11 of this year for his plan to burn several copies of the Koran, presumably to commemorate or recognize the anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center - or something like that. And, although I very much disagree with Mr. Jones’ dimwitted plot to deface the Islamic holy book, he is not the person that I am most angered by in this whole mess. I could really care less what one man in Florida, who leads a tiny (50 member) congregation, wants to do in his spare time. No one should have cared about what he had to say. This whole debacle, which was talked about around water coolers all over the Western world - perpetuated in part by the media’s unnecessary coverage of it - in my mind, really sheds light on deeper, more troubling issues within our dominant society; most notably, an unwarranted fear of Islam. After a certain point, the issue became less about this insane reverend who wanted to burn a holy text - one that means so much to so many people

Page 4

all around the world - and more about what the “even crazier” Muslims were going to do in retaliation. Even President Obama spoke out, under pressure from army officials, and condemned Jones’ actions on the grounds that it would put American troops fighting overseas in danger. There was never any discussion, as far as I could tell, about the fact that, if Jones had gone through with his plan, that he would have been performing a downright disrespectful and childish act against a perfectly peaceful religion - as peaceful as Christianity at any rate (if that counts for much). Maybe it was implied? Who knows? But it seemed that no matter who you talked to, or what news station you happened to be watching, the general feeling was that Jones’ actions would immediately set off a second 9/11; a slippery slope, to say the least. Did anybody really think that some crazy guy in Florida, burning 150 copies of the Koran was going to add fuel to the anti-American fire burning in the hearts of a select group - a small minority, mind you - of violent Muslims? Aren’t the few violent sects who are currently engaged in combat with American troops already fairly desperate and ruthless in their approach to gaining ground? Do you really think the actions of some guy in little old Gainsborough, Florida are going to strengthen or weaken the resolve of these fighters? No. Quite simply, the only reason this story ever took off in the first place is because people really like having a reason to talk about scary Muslims. The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 were really horrible and despicable acts of violence on America. But that’s exactly what they were: terrorist attacks. Terrorists don’t ever represent a majority - they are, more often than not, crazy people. The people who carried out those acts probably weren’t all that much different in their devotion to their religion than silly old Mr. Jones. Is Islam the threat? Or are crazy people the threat? Because America certainly has their fair share of those. And, aside from a few serious, but isolated acts of violence, I don’t see the Afghan (or Iraqi) army sending fighter jets overseas or dropping ground troops onto American soil. I’m not typically one to harp on the media, - I am kind of a member of it, after all - but in this particular situation, whosever desk this assignment initially came across - whether it was the local press in Gainsborough, or CNN, or CBC - should have just tossed it out. After all, there would be no hatred to incite if this particular pastor had been ignored. Instead, he was heard loud and clear across the world. It’s like that old cliché, “if a tree falls in the forest and nobody’s around, does it make a sound?” The whole of the Western world was suddenly re-invited into a conversation about how potentially dangerous Muslims are. And that brings me back to the quote that I started this rant with. Connect the dots. I’ll spare you my rant on that whole ground zero Islamic mosque/cultural centre debate. It would probably be fairly similar.

World Vision church relations director shares first-hand account of Haiti earthquake By Brian Rodgers of The Mercury For all of the horror stories heard in the days, weeks and months following the Haitian earthquake disaster, very few of the writers, reporters, politicians and aid givers who were relaying the information afterwards had actually experienced the quake. They certainly saw the devastation and the after-effects of the earthquake, but very few of them had a first-hand account of the minutes during and directly after the tragedy. Willard Metzger, the director of church relations for World Vision Canada stationed in Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario is one of the exceptions. Metzger arrived in Petionville, a suburb of Port-au-Prince (the Haitian capital) on January 11, 2010. The church leader was making his seventh trip to the small island country, set to host a sponsorship visit by a group of fellow church leaders from Fredericton, New Brunswick the next day. Metzger spent the 11th and the early part of the 12th finishing preparations and making sure everything was in place for the arrival of his colleagues. Little did he know, in those hours beforehand, that his preparations would go in vain. It had been about three years since Metzger had been to Haiti, and in the early part of his trip he marvelled at some of the positive steps he could see the country

Members of World Vision Canada, Willard Metzger (pictured) and Chris Schroeder appeared at Estevan Alliance Church on Monday to share the accounts of their experiences overseas to a small gathering of local residents. taking. “I remember actually being quite impressed by the strength of the new infrastructure that I saw,” said Metzger, during a stop in Estevan on Monday. “Some of the roads that hadn’t been paved, were paved; there was certainly a strong United Nations presence; and I was told there was a brand new, huge luxury hotel that was being built by Haitian investors. So, it felt like some things were starting to come together.” There was also a noticeable optimism among the Haitian people, Metzger said. “There were peaceful

times for years - since the last election, anyway. That strong UN presence certainly brought a sense of security and stability also.” On June 12, when his colleagues from Atlantic Canada arrived in Haiti, Metzger picked them up and the group returned to their Petionville hotel. An orientation session was scheduled to take place in the hotel’s dining room at 6 p.m. and then the group would spend the remainder of the trip venturing into Port-au-Prince, as well as the Haitian countryside. Shortly before 5 p.m., Metzger received a cell phone call from Paul-Emile

Cesar, an official from World Vision Haiti, who was set to take the group through their orientation. Cesar told Metzger that he was in his office only a few minutes from their hotel, and could essentially meet with the Canadians as soon as was preferable. Back in the hotel’s dining room, Metzger posed the question to his colleagues: we could do orientation right now and have the rest of the night free to do as we please, or we can go back to our rooms for an hour and meet again at 6, as was previously scheduled. One of the New Brunswick church leaders came

forward with a shrug and said, “ah, let’s just leave it as it is,” Metzger recalled. So, the group went their separate ways. At 5:53 p.m., mere minutes before the group was scheduled to re-assemble in the hotel’s dining room, the infamous 7.0 magnitude earthquake unleashed its wrath on Haiti. Metzger - who was up on the hotel’s top floor - and his crew were completely unharmed by the quake, however, part of the hotel did collapse, and the roof above the dining room - right where the group was to meet - imploded. “It came down to one

person deciding, ‘let’s just leave it as it is.’ That’s the difference between being buried under rubble or not,” said Metzger. This had not yet sunk in, though. Metzger was, after all, in his room, unsure what exactly was happening, or how bad it actually was. “At first I thought it was an explosion; like a bomb had gone off in the hotel right by me, because it was so massive; so gripping and loud,” he said. “Or, I thought that maybe a huge transport truck had just crashed into the side of the building. But, this lasted for 30 seconds, so I ruled out explosion and collision, because it just kept on going. “Then I remember thinking, ‘this is an earthquake! But I’m in Haiti - who has ever heard of an earthquake in Haiti?’” “Thirty seconds doesn’t sound long, but that’s a long time when you’re just standing there and everything is shaking around you. I didn’t feel danger then, I was just trying to make sense of it all. Earthquake isn’t part of my normal context. “Even then, when it finally stopped, I had no idea of the scope,” he continued. “I remember thinking, maybe it’s just my part of the hotel and I need to tell the desk clerk I didn’t do all of this damage and it wasn’t my fault.” Shortly after, however, after venturing from his room, Metzger was tipped Continued on Page 6

In fact, the area remained a bustling area of activity for all of the days that Metzger was there. “We were one of the few hotels standing, so we became the media centre. There was just international media from everywhere. We kind of got shoved in the corner more and more.” Although it was admittedly a little frustrating at the time to be pushed aside and overrun by the world’s press, Metzger said he realizes how important the coverage actually was for bringing the desperate situation in Haiti to light; something that will provide a backbone for the rebuilding process in the

years to come. “That’s probably now, what gives me such hope,” said Metzger. “There was just such an overwhelming response of generosity. I really think this is going to create a platform in Haiti, it will bring a new day for the country. It’s not going to be easy - you’ve got a government that was barely functioning before this disaster; about a third of them were lost. It’s going to be a tough rebuilding process, but I think the response has been so massive and continues to be, and it’s going to force, I think, a new day of collaboration, as long and as tough as it’s going to be; a new day of accountability.” Metzger was evacuated from Haiti on Jan. 15 and returned to Canada where he has been ever since. The blog entries that Metzger authored in those frantic days right after the quake have since been compiled into a booklet, distributed by World Vision, called, A personal reflection on the Haiti earthquake. As of late, Metzger has been travelling through Saskatchewan, making stops

NEWS along the way to tell his story, which is what brought him to the Estevan Alliance Church on Monday evening. Together with Chris Schroeder, a regional team leader for World Vision who recently returned to Canada after doing work on a project in Zambia, the two told their stories in a short, approximately hour-and-a-half long presentation called Stories from the heart: World Vision’s reflections on Haiti. Prior to the evening’s presentation, Schroeder and Metzger spent the day sharing their accounts with school groups around the city. Metzger said the tour has been a way of reaching out and getting in touch with some of the many World Vision sponsors in Saskatchewan, keeping the scenes and accounts from Haiti fresh in everybody’s hearts and minds. “This is sort of a way to say thank you and to report back on what’s been happening in Haiti. There’s been such a response of generosity and we want to give people a first-hand account of what happened.”

My name is Duffy, I am a neutered male, grey and white. I am very young and have the energy of a kitten. I love to play and play.

Keller is my name, I am a DMH big male, tan & white. When I came to EHS I was a little scruffy but I am looking pretty good now. I eat very well, I love to eat that is the best part of my day. I would be a great couch partner as long as we could have snacks watching t.v.

My name is Maggie, I am a girl, I have short hair, my coat is white with some tabby markings. I was dropped off in the lobby at EHS with my two kittens. I am all done being a mom so now I would like to Ànd my forever home... come and see me and kittens.

We still have a good selection of kittens to choose from, remember we are waiving the adoption fee on all our kittens just asking for a deposit on neutering or spaying which you will get back. Check out the animals in our care at:
