My name is Lola. Did you see me on the EHS Áoat on July 1? That was my second parade this year. I am a female Border Collie cross, about 6 months old. I am multi-coloured; white black, grey and some brown. I love going on walks and being in parades.

Thank you to all who came out to make this a day a success!

Michel Cyrenne came to Estevan two years ago to embark on his career as the city’s community development manager. Cyrenne said the reason he loves Estevan is because you have that small town feel, sense of security and comfort, but with the amenities of a big city. Q. How long have you been in Estevan? A. Two and a half years. Q. Where did you come from? A. I moved here from Eastend, Saskatchewan, just down in the Shaunavon area. Q. Why did you choose to move to Estevan? A. My field of study has always been economic development and I know Estevan is in the centre of the oil and gas industry, and with the power development, I know that this is a very busy city. Q. Why did you go into the field of economic development? A. I have a lot of passion for the province of Saskatchewan and I thought that this community could have a large impact on the province as a whole. I thought I’d love to be part of this community. Q. How long have you held this position in Estevan? A. Two years. This is the job I originally came here for.

Q. What are your job responsibilities?

A. I oversee day to day operations of the organization as a whole, so long term and short term planning, financial planning and what not. As the Chamber of Commerce, our job is to basically be the voice of the business community, to act in their best interest. In terms of economic development, our priorities are to identify community needs and attempt to address those needs. Our third priority would be tourism development and marketing, so attracting visitors to the community and providing them with information.

Q. What are some ways you market Estevan’s economy? A. There already is a very strong business community, which gives people the opportunity to branch off that. We’ve got a huge oil and gas industry and the support that’s available between the business community is just huge. The money that is available in the community because of the entrepreneurship, it can have a positive benefit. I think a lot

of people are surprised that for a city of 12,000 people, the number of services we provide. Q. What are some issues facing Estevan’s economy? A. The housing and labour shortage. If you go on the Sask Jobs website for example, there is something along the lines of 570 jobs available right now in the immediate area. Probably half of those jobs are in the trades, oil and gas, so they are very good, very high paying jobs;

it’s just a matter of trying to get people here to fill those jobs. A lot of people have come down here and found work but just haven’t been able to find a place to stay, so they end up having to turn around and go back home. Health care is a huge priority too. We only have seven doctors right now and according to the people at St. Joe’s we should have about 14 doctors. Infrastructure and recreation, just ensuring that we got strong roads, and things like the new civic arena; just encouraging that sort of thing.

Our Past

July 6, 1983

Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter

This week’s column is for those of you who say World Cup soccer is boring. To each their own, but understand first the sense of pride that accompanies the sport of soccer. Does it remind you of something? How about the Roughriders? The same feeling of support, faith and encouragement lives in the hearts of the soccer fans as it does the Riders’ fans. Community and the sense of unity overwhelms their spirit as it does yours. I know Saskatchewan isn’t known to host the majority of Canada’s soccer fanatics, but I think the province has more in common with the sport than people tend to think. Soccer is a sport and this province is athletically driven, taking pride in its sports and athletes. No different are the fans of the European sport, football. World Cup is a sporting event that brings communities in most of Ontario and around the world, together; it’s a sense of unit. For my brother, however, it’s in his blood. Ever since he was little, him and my dad would plant themselves in front of the TV and watch hours of soccer, and I mean HOURS! Ever since then my brother has eaten, slept and breathed soccer. Ask him about stats, injured players, who plays on what team in what league and for how long; he’ll have the answer and spare you the hesitation. So for those, if there are any, that say soccer is boring, or what’s the point? I say this, it’s a sport that brings communities together; people from different cultural backgrounds bask in the glory of their country winning a nail-biting game. It broke my heart to see my team, Italy humiliate themselves along with France, Portugal and a few others, but I still will carry faith with me for the next four years when Italy returns to kick some butt and reclaim the cup!

This week the Trader takes readers back 27 years. Play parks were just opening as school was just letting out. The kids enjoyed them then and till this day, they are still enjoyed by many. Just a reminder that the last day to join in on the fun this year is August 20, so don’t miss your chance to become part of Estevan’s history. Each week the Southeast Trader Express tells us what has happened recently, but we'll also give you a look in to the distant past. In other cases the abundance of water is simply more than most crops can deal with, so plants are yellowing, and not as thrifty as one would hope for. There is also a question about what impact the rain may have on fertilizer. There may be a leeching of nutrients away from a shallow plant root system, which means the investment in fertilizer may be at least partially lost. High amounts of precipitation leaves farmers with dead crops and a stressful work environment By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury With the excessive rainfall and thundershowers, it’s no wonder farmers are subjected to the amount of stress they are. With extreme moisture conditions, and in some parts of the province, flooding, farmers are losing their livelihoods. “It varies from situation to situation. The crops are actually standing in water for several days, and it can handicap the potential of the crops growing season. If they are just wet for a period of time, they tend to go yellow because their oxygen levels are dropping and it puts them under stress,” said Grant McLean cropping management specialist for the Agriculture Knowledge Centre. “Depending on how much moisture the crop is under, it can be beneficial and in extreme cases very detrimental to the advancement and growth of the crop.” However, farmers need know that they are not alone and should not have to face these issues solo, said Rick Bjorge, assistant director of regional services for the Agriculture Knowledge Centre. “We can help them talk about the issues that they are facing, and development plans to address some of the issues. Also there’s resources that are available that we can refer people to, so they can get the best information possible to help them,” said Bjorge. McLean said the province has witnessed over 200 per cent of normal precipitation between the months of May and June. The areas most affected are the northeast and east central portions of the province; canola, peas and oat are the most common crop farmed in these areas. “As far as having wet conditions certainly this area, this year has been very, very wet and I think the biggest challenge it’s over such a wide range of the province. In the past we have had isolated areas that have been under very, very wet conditions, but we’ve seen a significantly larger portion of the province affected by these wet conditions. “They were moist or in good moisture conditions coming out of the winter and then when you add additional rainfall on top of that, in many cases they are in surplus and in extreme cases, flooded conditions,”

U Pick Saskatoons Ready Now! Need extra cash? We need berry pickers! With the excessive rainfalls and chaotic thunderstorms, farmers are left struggling to save their crops and regain financial stability. said McLean. Bjorge said that with these weather conditions farmers undergo two significant stresses. “The two parts are financial stresses and then the impact that has on the farmers and the relationships they are in; a lot of people are just looking for some help, they explain their situation. We encourage people to call before the problem becomes a crisis,”

said Bjorge. McLean said that for some, their crops are too far flooded to recover, and like any business, this creates financial strian. “The real difficulty for farmers is they have very little control over the weather. Many of these crops that have been under water are not going to recover all that well. “I think that in any business, if you reduce the

New Phoenix immigration legislation compared to racial profiling PROVINCIAL The discovery of more than 200 dead cattle carcasses, which were strewn amongst a herd of cattle, starving, freezing and clinging to life, still haunts Llyod Howden. The horrific scene was found on a property near Outlook in March of 2009. Howden describes the case as one of the worst the Saskatchewan Humane Society has seen in the last 10 years and the worst he has seen during his time with animal protection services for the humane society. Amongst the dead cattle was a herd huddling together to protect one another from the cold, frigid winds. The cattle were visibly distressed and emaciated with no food or water, said Howden. Wayne and Barrett Robinson were fined $5,000, which is the most a person in Saskatchewan can be fined under the Animal Protec-

tion Act. Howden said the fine does not fit the crime and legislation has to be changed. “It was absolutely horrendous and it was very emotional for me,” he said. NATIONAL Taser International presented its co-founder and several expert witnesses at a public hearing in B.C., but it wasn’t enough to defend itself against the claim that its weapons can kill. The U.S. based company challenged the report into Robert Dziekanski’s death. The company claimed commissioner Thomas Braidwood’s findings were unfair. During arguments, Judge Robert Sewell asked Taser’s lawyer David Neave why the presence of the company at the 2008 hearings was not enough. Neave said that the

company still had no reason to believe Braidwood would reach the conclusions he did, which left Taser with no opportunity to properly respond. INTERNATIONAL On Tuesday, the Obama administration filed a lawsuit against Arizona for its “controversial immigration legislation,” and made a legal attempt to destroy the

measures, which Obama recently described as posing a serious threat to civil rights. The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in a Phoenix courtroom, alleges that Arizona “illegally elbowed its way into federal jurisdiction when it passed the legislation set to become law later this month.” The new state law allows police to question anyone they suspect is an

illegal immigrant. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said the state was forced to handle its illegal immigrant problem in the absence of any federal immigration reform. Brewer’s spokesman said it’s “a terribly bad decision.” “Arizona obviously has a terrible border security crisis that needs to be ad-

The Japanese art of origami, a hobby shared with the community By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury It was a hobby that began when she was just a little girl and her relatives came to visit; origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. “Origami was a hobby when I was little. We used to make it as a craft when cousins were over and things like that. It’s something I enjoyed and I thought it was something that would bring in a wide variety of people into the library, said Taren Trew, Estevan Public Library adult program co-ordinator. For event attendee, Kaye Hemus, the evening sparked an interest she had forgotten about many years ago. “I saw some origami being done when my kids were little and then I forgot all about it until I saw the sign; I thought I need to go and find out some more, she said.

Taren Trew was more than willing to focus her attention on those who needed an extra hand at Tuesday’s origami lesson at the library. Trew said the event was something fun and light for the summer and a way to unite the many cultures in Estevan. Hemus agreed with Trew and said she enjoyed meeting the unfamiliar faces in the community. “I think it’s fun and

informative and you meet people from other cultures. It was a lot of fun, said Hemus. Trew said she was quite impressed with the night’s turnout. “Tonight’s turnout was really good. There were actually a few people who

weren’t even registered, so I’m glad I prepared extra. It was really nice to be able to share a little bit of the science and the more complex stuff. Trew said origami isn’t something she actively engages in on a daily basis, but is something she never leaves behind. “On my own, probably mostly around Christmas because I make a lot of these ornaments for the library. It’s not something I do as much on my own, I’ve kind of grown into other crafts, she said. Trew’s advice for those serious about embarking on the art of origami is to remain dedicated. “If you are wanting to make some of those intense 3D type structures, they actually have masters that do that in Japan, it’s a complex hobby. I would never say I am anything more than a beginner.

‘Cheerleading proves to be a lot of hard work and dedication’

SUMMER READING PUZZLE 1 Solve the puzzle and explore your library this summer. Your library has lots of cool books and activities that will make you “LOL”. Don’t forget to fill out the entry form and take it to your local library for your chance to win a book. Or, you can also drop it off at your weekly newspaper office or mail it to SWNA, 14-401-45th St. W., Saskatoon, SK S7L 5Z9. Winners will be drawn on September 30, 2010. Discover how much fun reading can be! (No photocopies please.)

By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury Begin with a passionate coach dedicated to the sport and add 10 to 15 hyper girls, and you get a three-day cheerleading camp. Bonnie ChepilKvamme has been sitting on the Saskatchewan Cheerleading Association executive for many years and has been coaching the sport for 18 years. For Kvamme it’s sheer determination and her love for cheerleading that has kept her motivated and is an inspiration to many young girls and boys. Coaching the threeday camp, which has been in operation for three years, began when Kvamme was approached by Andrea Stelnicki, who was in charge of parks and recreation at the time. “She was a long-time cheerleader and she heard about the strength of the program that existed in Estevan, so she asked if I’d be able to do that for younger children.” The participants in the camp are taught new, spunky, dance moves, the basic cheer motion, stunts and how to use pompoms. “They walk away knowing that cheerleading is a lot of hard work; they learn jumps they can do, they learn funky dances. It’s different for a lot of them, but it is a lot of hard work. “I hope a new appreciation for cheerleading is what they walk away with because it’s very athletic,” said Kvamme. The appreciation for the sport is one thing, but getting involved is another important aspect Kvamme stresses; the sport is for any gender not only girls, all are welcome. “Cheerleading is not just restricted to females, it is also a male sport; I wouldn’t say it is just segregated to girls. “We held Saskatchewan Cheerleading Association provincials here in 2006, and our gym was packed, there were over 500 people in attendance. I think it opened the eyes of many to see boys out on the floor doing the athletic portion of it. They don’t dance, they just lift, they do stunts,” she said. For the boys involved, it has proven to be a gateway to a new and exciting career, said Kvamme.

During Monday’s camp, girls aged eight to 12 learned new, funky dance moves, stunts, and how to properly use their pompoms. “They seem to have enjoyed it quite a bit. We’ve had boys who graduated from the Comp going on to cheer university teams, so it’s something they have taken with them.” As for the increase in popularity for cheerleading in the province,

Kvamme said she could not be more excited to have witnessed the growth. “It’s so nice to fuel that new interest, it’s very much so up-and-coming in Saskatchewan. If I can pass that love of it along, it’s great.”

Hockey legend Bob Probert dead after sudden collapse PROVINCIAL Quarterback Darian Durant and slotback Andy Fantuz of the Saskatchewan Roughriders received playerof-the-week honours. Durant was named the offensive player-of-the-week with a unanimous vote after he guided the Riders back from a 33-12 third-quarter deficit to a 54-51 double-overtime win over the Montreal Alouettes last Thursday. Fantuz received the Canadian player-of-the-week honour after he hauled in two touchdown passes in the Canada Day game. Wide receiver Rob Bagg was a runner-up for the Canadian award. *** Roughriders’head coach, Ken Miller says “he never wants to be penalized again for a substitution error.” The Riders pulled off a win despite spotting the defending Grey Cup champions a 33-12 thirdquarter lead, and allowing Tim Maypray to return a missed field goal for a 125-yard touchdown. Coach (Ken) Miller told us that he wants the 13th man to remain in the stands for the rest of the season,’’ middle linebacker Barrin Simpson said Monday after the Riders practised for first time since the Canada Day victory. “I’m with

him on that one. We need the 13th man in the stands and not on the field. That one shouldn’t have happened. We got that corrected and I’m pretty sure it won’t happen again.’’ NATIONAL A legendary on-ice brawler who secretly fought his personal battles with alcohol, drugs and the law until he discovered redemption in the hearts of his children, is dead. Former Detroit Red Wing and Chicago Blackhawk Bob Probert died unexpectedly Monday after he collapsed in a boat on Lake St. Clair near Windsor, Ontario. Probert was only 45years-old and is described as being “largely misunderstood” by his long-time agent and criminal lawyer. *** Justin Morneau of New Westminster, B.C. beat out Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and Mark Teixeira of the New York Yankees to line up at first base at Major League

Argentina soccer coach, Diego Maradona declared his “chapter” over on Monday. However, the country’s local football association and a close friend said he has not yet resigned. “It’s done, my chapter has ended,” said Maradona, just two days after Germany’s astonishing 4-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals. “I gave everything I had,” he said. A spokesman for the Argentine Football Association said Maradona had not officially resigned and would meet with AFA president Julio Grondono after the World Cup had ended.

Are our eating habits getting better? Written By The Public Health Nutritionists of Saskatchewan With the Support of Population Health Promotion, Sun Country Health Region There are four food groups in Canada’s Food Guide: Vegetables and Fruit, Grain Products, Milk and Alternatives, and Meat and Alternatives. Good nutrition means choosing a variety of foods from all four food groups every day. How are you at choosing a balanced variety of foods from all four food groups? In the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), over 35,000 Canadians were asked what they ate in a 24-hour period. Results showed that, on average, Canadians ate healthy food. The CCHS also found about half of Canadian adults did not eat enough vegetables and fruit for best health. In 2009, a similar survey was done by the Dairy

of a healthy diet and are needed by our bodies. For example, many of the vegetables and fruit we eat may help prevent some cancers and can lower the risk of heart disease. Whole grains may lower the risk of heart disease. Milk and Alternatives keep our bones healthy. The Meat and Alternatives group gives us is protein; protein is needed to build and repair cells. These surveys suggest we have some work to do to improve eating habits. Choose a variety from each food group each day. Visit Health Canada for more information on Canada’s Food Guide or to build your own food guide. For more information, contact Barb Wright, Public Health Nutritionist, Sun Country Health Region, Estevan; Phone 637-2469 or e-mail: bwright@ schr.sk.ca bwright@schr.sk.ca

Farmers of Canada and Dietitians of Canada. This survey showed many Canadians chose food from only three of four food groups, missing an entire food group. Vegetables and Fruit and Milk and Alternatives were the two food groups that were missed most often. Although many adults ate food from all four food groups, some adults were not getting the recommended number of servings from the food groups. When looking at the two surveys it seems some Canadian adults are not always selecting foods from all four food groups every day. There were reasons given as to why adults did not eat from all four food groups. Some said they did not know how important some of the food in Canada’s Food Guide is for good health. Others stated they did not know that they needed to include all of the four food groups in their diet. All foods in Canada’s Food Guide are a part

‘OTS women’s golf tournament gives ladies in the oil-field a social outlet’ By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury The opportunity to socialize; an outing; the chance to meet the women behind the phone calls and e-mails; the women’s OTS golf tournament is held every year in recognition of the females in the oil field industry. “This is our 13th year. It came about when some of the members of the OTS men’s team recommended that the women start our own, so we decided to get going with that. “Basically it’s a networking type of tournament for women who work in the oil-field industry to get to know one another, and put names to faces. So many of these people that we work with and talk to don’t get to really see each other,” said Cindy Romanyk, Enbridge employee and an organizer for the event. “I think it’s im-

portant because so many of us work in the offices and don’t get out to meet the other women, I mean we talk to them over the phone and stuff like that, but as far as actually getting out and meeting people we don’t, because that’s just not our job,” said Tanya George, also an organizer for the event. It’s a Texas scramble, 18-hole golf tournament where 144 women are welcome to join. So far about 120 spots have been filled and although the deadline was June 28, George said she will be accepting applicants until the beginning of next week. “We are getting close to full, so if anybody is thinking about it, give us a call. If they want to golf they have to get their names in,” said George. For George the tournament broadens her social circle and allows the women who work with one another every day to finally meet

and greet. “It just gives you a broader spectrum of people that you know, and I just enjoy meeting people. You know, working in an office all day you don’t really have a lot of social interaction with outside companies,” she said. As for feedback, both Romanyk and George agree the women are very much appreciative of the event. “Very well, there are a lot of women in the oil industry that do golf in it, and I think from what I can tell they’ve been having a good time and it’s a fun way to get out and socialize and get to know one another. I think overall it’s been a positive function,” said Romanyk. “The way the women have fun is the main thing. They really appreciate us going through all the work to put this together and put it on for them,” said George. Working in a male dominated industry, Romanyk

and George said there may not be as many event opportunities for the women. “There seems to be not as many opportunities for the women to get out and network and socialize, so I think this is a really good way to promote women within the industry,” said Romanyk. “I guess the men’s is bigger because there are more men working in this industry than women. It’s just a male dominated industry. “It’s great, the guys are great with us and really supportive of us,” said George. Romanyk said the balance of women and men in the office is stable and she could not be happier with her 16 years of employment at Enbridge. The tournament takes place Friday, July 16 at the Woodlawn Golf Course. Dinner and prizes are to be looked forward to after the tournament.

The Wall Government’s financial mismanagement is putting valuable programs and services at risk, forcing many Saskatchewan people and businesses to pay large increases on their utilities and property taxes? The Wall Government projected its total deficit in the 2009-10 budget at $24.8 million; however the release of Public Accounts, Vol. 1 exposes a massive increase in last year’s total deficit to $409.2 million -further proof of the Wall Government’s financial incompetence. The people of Saskatchewan have become the latest victims of the Wall Government’s damaging cuts to health care, longterm care facilities and the cancelation of the Saskatchewan Children’s Hospital. Is the Wall Government one you can trust? For more information Contact the NDP MLAs P: 787-7388 E: caucus@ndpcaucus.sk.ca

Meeting Your Half Orange: An Utterly Upbeat Guide to Using Dating Optimism to Find Your Perfect Match by Amy Spencer (Running Press, $22.95) Reviewed by Katy B. Olson With the sea of selfhelp books flooding the local Barnes & Noble, it’s clear that positive thinking is the remedy “du jour.” But there are few books on positive thinking and relationships as both bubbly and informative as “Meeting Your Half Orange” by

Amy Spencer. While her approach focuses on finding romance, the author’s buoyancy is contagious and her tips applicable for the most significant long-term relationship you’ll ever have: the one with yourself. “Putting off things that will bring pleasure into your daily life,” she writes, “is doing yourself a disservice. ... You deserve to be happy right now -- not just beginning on some vague day in the future when your true love comes along.” But the book does promise that readers will find their “half oranges.”

So, what’s a half orange? As Spencer writes, a half orange is “a translation of the Spanish phrase ‘mi media naranja,’ which means ‘my half orange’; used to describe, in love, one’s sweetheart, one’s beautifully perfect other half.” Spencer uses neurological research on positive psychology, coupled with personal anecdotes and helpful guidelines, to illustrate an exciting, positive-thinking-paved path for finding that missing half orange. The book is peppered with useful tips for “love-visualization” -which Spencer says is key to first picturing, then finding the perfect mate -- such as imagining next Valentine’s Day or describing the ideal birthday, and equally informative cautionary tales. The philosophy guiding “Meeting Your Half Orange” is the author’s simple belief that everyone deserves a “big love.” In the final pages, she writes simply, “What does it take

to believe you deserve a great love? Because while you may not know whether or not you deserve love, I know you do. We all do. And we can be better, brighter human beings if we’re given the chance to have it.” (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
