NEWS

CITIZENS’ OPINION What do you think about the Canadian government’s plan to get rid of the mandatory long-form census, in favour of a voluntary short-form one? “I think it’s a bad idea because they get a lot of information that they use for other things from the census. If they have a voluntary short-form, most people aren’t going to fill it in and they’ll have nothing.” -Barry Olson, Estevan

“We’ve been doing it for a long time, and we need to have the long-term records of how people have been growing, because if we see how people have been changing then we can do things to accommodate that. It’s frustrating for all of my friends who have been doing research.” -Katie Salmers (Political studies and English student, U of S), Estevan.

“I don’t think it’s going to work. You’re never going to get a full idea of what’s going on by doing that. Not that you get the best idea with the long census anyway, because people just run through it. Now, it’s just going to get worse.” -Keith Staar, Calgary

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Avoid adding to the tension around you. Even a well-meant reaction against something you perceive as unfair could be misunderstood. Let things calm down, and then talk about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for romance for unattached Bovines, and a good time for reinforcing the bonds between partners. Children’s needs are important during the latter part of the week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A compliment from a surprising source sends you wafting way up into the clouds, where -sorry to say -- your view of what’s going on is obscured. Come on down and face some reality. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Even a family-loving person like you sometimes can feel you’re at the end of the line with contentious kinfolk. But things can work out. Re-

member that it’s better to talk than walk. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A job-related move might hold more positive surprises than you’d expected. Go into it with confidence, and look for all the advantages it offers. Then decide what

you’ll do with what you find. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Driving yourself too hard to get something done on a deadline you set up can backfire. Ease into a more realistic finish date, and add more breaks to your work schedule. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of humor can brighten any dark period, and your laughter can dispel those gray clouds swirling around you. The weekend presents a

surprising but welcome change. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about the words you use, especially in touchy situations. The old Chinese saying that the spoken word is silver, but the unspoken gold could well apply here. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some facts could emerge to shed light on unresolved past problems. What you learn also might help explain why a once-warm relationship

suddenly cooled down. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t let your pride get in the way of checking into what could be a great new opportunity. Get the facts first, and worry about procedure and protocol later. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A health problem in the family might have other relatives assuming that, as before, you’ll take over the health-care duties. Surprise them and insist they share in the

caretaking. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A series of changes can be unsettling, but in the long run, it can pay off with new perspectives on what you plan to do. Keep your mind open to the possibilities that might well lie ahead. BORN THIS WEEK: You might be under a “royal” sign, but you have a wonderful way of embracing everyone as an equal. Hi, my name is Manny, I was just a kitten in this picture, I am all grown up now. I am neutered with all my vaccinations, I would be a great choice for the Farm Program - those little mice wouldn’t have a chance with me around.

My name is Ryker, I am another good candidate for the Farm Program. I am independent, strong and muscular. I also have all my vaccinations and I am neutered so I am ready to go whenever you come for me, I will be waiting.

Hello, my name is Susie, I am a female Tabby, spayed and as cute as a button. I love to be held and cuddled, I turn on my purr. I do have a little problem, I guess I am classified as a special needs cat because I have something called Cerebellar Hypoplasia which means I have uncoordinated motion which means sometimes I fall down and have some trouble walking. Once I get going I can move pretty quick... but I am a sweetheart. We have ALOT of kittens, so cute, so curious, so sweet! Come & see us okay??

Expressed Opinions Tonaya Marr Estevan Mercury Reporter

Pie to Save the World You can’t turn on your computer without reading some depressing news bulletin. Global warming is melting the ice caps. Obesity is still on the rise. Mel Gibson is running amok, shouting profanities and cursing out his ex-wife. Everything is so negative, and it always feels like there’s a constant threat to humanity (especially with the whole Mel Gibson thing - that’s terrifying). However, one nice thing about this world we live in is our ability to make changes and to improve our situations. With this in mind, I’ve devised a fool-proof plan to save the environment. That’s right, the whole environment. I don’t want any special recognition should this be successful. Maybe just the occasional pat on the back, or for fewer people to cut me off on Fourth Street. Anyway, Estevanites have always claimed that we live in the sunniest place in Canada. If this past summer is anything to go by, I’m not completely convinced, but they must have some evidence to back this up. I propose using the wonderful Saskatchewan sunlight for more than just a glowing tan; I want to generate some energy. No more of this air polluting, coal-dust causing power, I want clean, affordable energy that comes from something more sustainable than coal and oil. Because we’ll always have the sun to count on - if we don’t, well, then we have bigger

Page 4

issues to worry about - while fossil fuels are due to run out sometime in the next ten to 100-ish years. My scheme is a two-part plan. The end result would be solar panels having been installed on every building around the world. Of course we’d have to start somewhere, with the perfect location being Estevan - we’re not so big that this project is impossible, and we have the reputation as the “Energy City” to uphold. The energy generated by the solar panels could be routed into the current SaskPower grids, though my knowledge of these things is limited and I can only guess at the amount of modifications that such a change would require. Let’s say though, for the sake of my plan, solar power can easily be transferred into the grids, and stored for days (or weeks) like those of this summer when the sun simply refuses to shine. If storage isn’t possible, there will continue to be the Boundary Dam and Shand power plants available to supply “just in case” energy until the time that fuels run out. The major flaw, if you haven’t already picked up on it, is money. How can a community like ours afford this project? This is where my brilliant scheme comes into place: in order to raise the money needed to purchase the solar panels, we will hold dozens of highly successful, highly profitable pie bake sales. Yes, pie. Pie will save the world. Besides being absolutely delicious, pie can prove to be a struggle to make, causing many people to decide to go without it. By offering homemade, scrumptious pies to people of both our community and those in the surrounding area, we can make some serious cash, while maintaining a reputation for being a top-of-the-line energy producer. We’d be frontrunners in the movement to go green, and I think that’s something all Estevan residents could be proud of. These changes won’t happen overnight. It’ll takes dozens of years before enough money can be raised to fit each Estevan roof with a solar panel. But by making the changes, starting the process, we can make a difference that will affect every generation to come. Selling pies to raise the money may be slightly unrealistic, albeit undeniably tasty, but it’s an idea. Not an obesity friendly idea, mind you, but an idea from which morebrilliant-and-less-shortening-based ideas may someday stem. We’re an ambitious and hard working people, here in Estevan. In a society wherein the future seems so depressing and lunatic-filled, we need to generate some new options to consider.

www.estevanmercury.ca to the environment since plastic seems to be forever in the garbage dump - because I have noticed repeatedly groceries seem to run about $20 a bag. So that assessment held; sort of. I say sort of because when I got home I realized one of the bags was not groceries at all. There was antiperspirant, body wash, hand soap and other items which went nowhere near the refrigerator or food cupboard. I can also assure the bag was easily $20, and suddenly the food, which will be the basis for a week, or more of meals for yours truly, comes in at about $50. Our grocery bill is so rarely only food these days, but yet we seem to perceive the money spent in a grocery store is directly attributable to the food we eat, and that is not the case. It should also be realized the cost of food in a grocery store is still generally cheaper than eating out. This is not a new topic for me, but one which was brought The same Sunday I decided not to cook, and headed out to once more into focus for me earlier this day, so when I sat a local fast food restaurant where I ordered a burger with fries down to write this week’s column it was a natural to touch on - yes, upgraded to poutine - and a drink. The meal was far from once more. large enough to fill a plastic bag from a grocery store, but it did The issue is the one surrounding the supposed high cost ring up on the cash register at just short of $14. By CALVIN of food. DANIELS While buying food and cooking at home is not as expensive Agriculture It’s a lament we often hear from consumers, that a trip to Trader as consumers seem to think, there is an aspect of the cost of food Columnist the grocery store is an expensive one. which is more confusing than the consumers’ view, and that is So Sunday I looked at the cupboard, and like Old Mother Hubbard, how little farmers receive. it was pretty much bare. I sat down and wrote up a grocery list, and While there is no easy way for this writer to determine exactly how headed bravely to the store, which not surprisingly was busy. much of the $50 in groceries, or the $14 in fast food, would have made Now I’ll admit I didn’t stick to the list exactly, but I was pretty its way to a farmer’s pocket, I do know it would be an abysmally small good, and when I finally got to the till it took four bags and 75 bucks portion. That is a one of the great underlying problems of the farm sector: and I walked out of the grocery store. that the primary producer has no way to recoup their operational costs It was interesting that it took four of the in-store plastic bags - yes, from the market place, which ultimately leads to our dinner table. This I left the cloth ones at home, even though I know that is not being kind is something that needs to change.

Souris Valley Museum Pioneer Camp Curtis Phillipchuk constructs a paper fortuneteller with a little help from Souris Valley Museum curator Twyla Exner. Phillipchuk and 11 other kids between the ages of 7- and 11-years-old took part in the museum’s Pioneer Camp from July 19-23. Several activities were organized to give the campers a taste of life during the early 1900s in Estevan. The kids learned to make pioneer-era food from scratch, including taffy, butter, ice cream and candy, they wrote with dip pens, planted their own beans, toured historical landmarks in and around Estevan, and played plenty of games.A second session of the camp will start on Aug. 2 and run until Aug. 6.

Slow food for better health Written By The Public Health Nutritionists of Saskatchewan With the Support of Population Health Promotion, Sun Country Health Region Have you ever wished for life to slow down for a while? For a change of pace, try ‘slow food’. It doesn’t come in a package, but slow food is simple and it can be fun for everyone. Grab and go meals have become a way of life for most of us. A large variety of processed foods, frozen dinners, and fast foods are available. Many people now spend very little time making meals. The fast food industry is changing our food culture, and it is having an alarming impact on our health. Rates of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are growing. Another danger is the risk of losing our food heritage. In 1986, Carlo Petrini of Italy started the Slow Food movement in part to save foods that are disappearing due to the rise of processed foods and modern farming. The Slow Food movement also provides taste education and links producers to consumers through events and projects. Local groups organize events and activities for members, children and teachers. For example, members may take part in a tasting workshop or children may visit a local

farm or farmers’ market. Slow Food is worldwide and is growing in Canada. This is no surprise since ‘slow food’ can benefit everyone. Replacing fast food and processed foods with those made from basic ingredients promotes good nutrition. Sharing meals with others and meeting new people while preparing foods can be a great social experience. Slow food can help people make food choices with awareness and responsibility, changing our relationship with food in a positive way. Slow Food believes in recognizing the importance of pleasure connected to food. Here are some fun slow food ideas: * Make home made noodles or perogies with a neighbour. * Plant spinach seeds with your children and help them make a salad with fresh spinach leaves. * Make bannock with a parent or elder. * Visit a local farm to see where food is grown. * Set up a School Gardens project. * Host a Taste Workshop. Slow food has rewards for physical, social, and mental well-being. Slowing down can be a great way to protect health and traditions. Visit www.slowfood. ca for more information.

for were actually booked by the previous curator, Cheryl Andrist. I think that part of my curatorial theme has followed or extended from what she had done, but I’m also trying to bring in more contemporary artists and younger artists who are making it in major cities. A lot of our artists are coming from Montreal and Toronto and Calgary. So, I think what we’re trying to do now, just to appeal to the people in Estevan, is bring in stuff that’s familiar or that have elements that are familiar.

One on One with Brian Rodgers Griffith Aaron Baker grew up in Regina where he received a bachelor of fine arts degree in sculpture from the University of Regina in 2004, and then studied at Concordia University in Montreal, where he completed a master of fine arts degree in sculpture in 2009. Now, Baker lives in Estevan, where he has worked as the director and curator of the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum since June 2008. You grew up in Regina, then finished up school in Montreal - how did you end up in Estevan? “It was definitely this job that brought me here. It’s really difficult to find jobs in my profession at my age - I’m only 29-years-old. The best job that I could get is probably being a professor at a university, because it pays better than anything else. Curating is more arts administration, rather than art, so I don’t get to do as much of my own personal sculpture work as I’d like to, but the trade-off is money. So working at the EAGM is kind of a foot in the door then? “Absolutely. But, with that being said, I don’t have any intentions to leave per se. We’ll see what happens, I might be here for the rest

of my life. As curator/director, what are some of your duties and responsibilities?

How do you get a hold of people from around the world and then get them interested in showing their art in Estevan?

“I basically look after all aspects of the EAGM, from paying the bills and accounting, to advertising, marketing and writing up contracts for artists - that would be the director side. And then on the curator side, it’s physically bringing in artists to exhibit. We’ve got four gallery spaces and then the museum too. So, I’ll research current trends in contemporary art, finding artists from across the world to bring in, and then try to figure out which works will appeal to the people here and to try and present diverse exhibitions based on what people have said about previous exhibitions. So, it’s actually quite a broad scope of little things that add up to a whole lot of work.

“The gallery that we have in Estevan is actually really nice. You wouldn’t think about it, because Estevan is a relatively small centre, but the gallery’s been around for 30 years and it’s brought in some really cool artists - we’ve had Pablo Picasso’s works here at some point in the last 30 years. There’s a lot of really neat stuff that’s been coming through here. So, it’s probably not the hardest thing to convince people to come and show here. But, just by being in the middle of the art milieu, I know a lot of the artists that we’re bringing in, so I guess I connect with them that way. So, they’re friends, or friends of friends, and it just so happens that their work fits in with the theme that we’re trying to bring to the people of Estevan.

What do the people of Estevan like to see in art exhibitions?

Do you also try to get in a lot of Saskatchewan artists as well?

“I’m not sure yet. It’s a funny thing with art galleries – you program two years in advance. So I’ve been here for two years and two months, and my shows just started a few months ago. Before that, the shows that I was physically here setting up and taking down and dealing with the artists

“Yes. We’re actually funded by the Saskatchewan Arts Board. They give us basically all of the money that we use to pay the artists and have receptions and all that sort of stuff. One of their requirements is that at least half of your exhibitions must be of Saskatchewan artists. So, we follow that - in fact

Shop all Summer Long

probably 70 per cent of the art that we bring in is from Saskatchewan. But, I don’t pick the exhibitions based on politics or anything like that, I pick it if I like the work. So, if anybody out there wants to have an exhibition here, all of the details are on our website, anybody can apply, you don’t have to be a professional artist. How would you describe Estevan’s interest inand appreciation for art?

province in terms of money allocated towards arts and culture. You could drive from one end of Quebec to the next, and go through art galleries in places one-eighth the size of Estevan and see phenomenal international artists - the equivalent of AC/DC in terms of the artworld, because they have an appreciation for it, and they have a lot of tourism.

“Honestly it’s more than I thought it would be, because it is an industry city. Everybody likes art, but in that same sense, art can be fairly alienating in itself there’s a lot of weird stuff out there. I guess that’s where the balance of finding something that’s both aesthetically appealing, but also challenges you a little bit comes in. I think overall, the people that I’ve met and who have come to the gallery, have been art supporters women who have been here for forever-and-a-half, and were instrumental in getting this organization built from the ground up 30 years ago. But we even get oil riggers coming in here. And a lot of our patrons are kids, and kids love everything. So it’s interesting to see them come in to a really conceptual, highly academic exhibition and just say what’s on their mind - because kids do that - and get everything completely right. So, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to appreciate art, it’s about what you like and what you don’t. So, is part of your mandate to bring in stuff that people wouldn’t necessarily get a chance to see, and that will challenge people? “That’s exactly it. Coming from Quebec - the French really appreciate arts and culture. It’s the largest

NEWS Tourism is big in Canada these days, and with Estevan being so close to the border, the other half of our patrons are tourists from the States. So, I’m trying to follow the Quebec-ideal of - it doesn’t matter what size you are, you can still have pretty cool stuff.

THE TRADER, FRIDAY, JULY 30, 2010 has doubled in size. We’ve got a new floor in our main gallery, so there’s been quite a bit of capital expenses incurred over the past two years that, for the most part, have been funded through the Spectra Community Foundation and the City of Estevan. So, we’re kind of slowing down with that and trying to get back into more programming. And what are you currently working on within the EAGM? “We are getting a new floor in the Northwest Mounted Police Museum within the next month or two. We’ve been concentrating on making the facility a little bit better and a little bit easier for us to work through. And then, the next couple of years will be concentrated on getting out in the community a little bit more and marketing ourselves and bringing more people into the gallery. Can you shed some light on what it takes to make it as an artist in Saskatchewan, or even Canada?

Have you implemented any major operational changes in the gallery since you took over the job? “We’ve done a ton. One of the biggest issues that I heard from Cheryl Andrist, and before her from Brenda Barry-Byrne, was the space requirement. We’ve done quite a substantial amount of moving around the walls. We’ve got a brand new education room that has doubled in size. Our permanent collection

“Luck (laughs). Unfortunately, it’s 90 per cent luck. You have to be in the right place at the right time. I’ve been fortunate in that my sculptures have been picked up by quite a few people in Quebec, so I’ve been in internationallevel exhibitions there. I’ve shown at a lot of places in Saskatchewan, but the thing is, Saskatchewan has a very closed art community - it’s a good community, there’s a lot of friendship and everybody knows who everybody is, but the major funders like the Mackenzie or Mendel Art Galleries tend to show the same groups of artists again and again. I think that’s slowly changing, but it’s still actually quite difficult to make it in Saskatchewan. If you want to be a national or

international artist, you’ve got to show quite a bit - like all the time and everywhere, which is draining too, because most art galleries are not for profit, so they only have so much money. As an artist you also have to know how to bring in other sources of income, because you’re never going to be able to sell your artwork on a monthly basis and get a monthly cheque until that luck kicks in. Before I started this job I was probably working between 12- and 16-hour days making art, and then on top of that applying for exhibitions and grants. How do you find any time and energy to create these days? “It’s difficult. I had a commission for the Dunlop Art Gallery that I completed in the fall of 2009, and since then I haven’t done much of anything. I’ve been concentrating on working here at the art gallery and we bought a house when we moved here, so we’ve been fixing that up a little bit. I think I’m going to get back into making stuff. Setting deadlines for yourself is an important thing. I’ll apply for exhibitions and because people are booking two years in advance you have to apply before you’ve even made the work, just to get it. So, I’m applying for exhibitions right now, for work that I’m intending to make over the next year and a half. And if I get those exhibitions then I’ve got a set deadline to have that work done by or else I’m not going to get paid.

SUNDAY, KNOWN Biblically as “The Sabbath” or Lord’s Day, has been of considerable benefit to all mankind. It has its roots in Scripture. The Sabbath principle is embodied with the Ten Commandments, which were given for all men and for all time. Following the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, the first day of the week became a weekly reminder of His risen presence. Whereas the 7th day speaks of God’s work in creation, the 1st day reminds us of His love in redemption. For more information contact: CLDA, Box 1369, Picture Butte, AB, T0K 1V0. TM1-12

• This is an easy do-it-yourself project: Cut a bleach or laundry detergent bottle in half. Use the handle to scoop pet poop, and the bottom as a receptacle. You can line the bottom with a plastic bag and do the whole back yard. Tie the bag and dispose of it in the trash. Store-bought scoops can cost as much as $20! • “I have a lot of plastic film containers around, since I still like to take regular photos. But I have found a use for them that crosses over into digital. I store a couple batteries in a container and stick it in my digital camera case. That way I always have a fresh refill ready to go.” -P.E. in Massachusetts • After you have addressed a package using a felt-tip marker, either rub it with a white candle or cover it with tape to protect it from rain. • A great camping tip: “To keep ants off your

camp table, bring four clean tuna or cat-food cans. Fill them about three-fourths of the way with water and stick them under the table’s legs. The ants can’t climb up the legs.” -- K.R. in Georgia • Keep tablecloths and cloth napkins from creasing by rolling them around a cardboard tube and securing the ends with fabric ties. Store in a drawer. • Clean the screens on your patio or window with a carpet scrap. Cut a carpet scrap to fit a block of wood, nail it down and use it to clean the screens.
