“This year’s Idol went very, very well. I think this year, most people would agree that our Junior Idol show was the bigger show to watch, there was a lot of competition going on there, it was a lot of fun. “I have to say that this is one of the best year’s I have ever seen. We’ve had a lot of good comments, a lot of excited people and not too many upset people. Everybody was pretty satisfied. “Hopefully next year will go just as well. I look forward to seeing what comes of it, but every year is a little different you never know.”

Normand Poirier

Normand Poirier is the executive director at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The shortage of physicians in the community is one of the biggest challenges the city currently faces. However, Poirier said he remains confident and on the hunt to bring in more doctors to serve Estevan’s growing population. Q. How would you describe your role at St. Joseph’s Hospital? A. I’m the administrator, I basically make the wheels go round and I keep the facility in operation. Having said that, I rely very strongly on a great team, so I’ve got an easy job because I’ve got really great people. Q. What does having this role mean to you? A. It’s a great sense of personal satisfaction and community involvement. Along with the industry, health care is one of those pillars that supports the infrastructure of Estevan. Q. What is the most

challenging part of your job? A. It’s always the resources. It often is money and basically sometimes staffing. Right now we are going through a shortage of physicians, so that’s very challenging. We want to keep the programs going and we want to satisfy the needs and the expectations of the community. The challenges change from day to day, but it’s always about resources.

Money Problems?

Q. What is your favourite part of your job? A. Signing birth certificates, we send out honourary birth certificates. It’s kind of neat to think your name is on little Joey’s commemorative birth certificate. Q. What is the hospital’s greatest challenge at this point in time? A. The shortage of physicians, the needs of the community, which keeps on expanding. We have limited resources and a few physicians in town. Those poor

souls are working very long hours, they are on call, and it’s very stressful, very demanding. For the well-being and to satisfy the community’s needs, as well as to relieve the ever increasing pressure on the existing Estevan physicians, recruitment is the number one issue.

Start Fresh. We Can help. Q. What is currently being done to address the issue of the shortage of physicians in the city? A. There is so much ef-

Hi, my name is Sunny D, I am an orange and white male cat, neutered with all my vaccinations, I am a little sad I was adopted to a family and had to come back because they had allergies, I really loved having my own family and space, I hope I will find a new family soon.

Hi, my name is Devina, I am a pretty black and white female. I have a split personality. I can be sweet as sweet can be and then not so nice but this usually only happens why they want to put me back into my cage, I don’t like that cage, I would rather be playing with my feline friends.

Aren’t we cute? We are very lucky to be here, our mother was ran over accidently but the people stopped to check on her and heard us in the ditch. They took us home for the night and brought us to the EHS the next day. There are 5 of us, 4 females and 1 male. We are orange or orange and white, we are fluffy, soft and sweet. We are all ready for our forever families, so come and see us.

Remember our Farm Program is on again, neutered and spayed cats with vaccinations for a minimal charge. All we need is your land description. We are running low on cat food again, our cats prefer FRISKIES, WHISKAS, PURINA, SPECIAL KITTY. Check out the animals in our care at:

Our Past June 14, 2000

Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter

Fake nails, acrylic or gel, painted pink, purple, green, blue, etc., I wouldn’t go a day without them; until I moved here, that is. When I moved to Estevan I was excited to see that a variety of nail salons were available to me, until I actually made some calls and realized how far from home I really was. Seventy dollars for a full set and $40 to $50 for a fill, really? I could get a full set of acrylic nails for $20, and yes, I know acrylic is a bad word here in Estevan, but even a full set of gel nails was only $30 and $20 for a fill at home! OK, so once I wrapped my mind around the price, I thought it’s all right because this is my necessity, my nails need to get done. However, my first experience was a disaster. My nails were hacked up, rough, and were just plain unacceptable. I decided right there that I would just have to suffer as a woman without her nails done. Then I happened to ask a lady at work who had performed such a fantastic task on her nails, and she laughed as they told me she did them herself. The thought had crossed my mind too that I could just purchase a fake nail set from the drugstore and do it myself. But I remembered the previous time I had attempted to do my own nails and how much of a disaster it had turned out to be, so I quickly disregarded the idea. It wasn’t until a couple weeks later that I was browsing through Wal-Mart, and came across the nail care aisle. I couldn’t help but get lost in all the colours and designs of the various nail kits, and succumbed to my temptations and purchased a pack. Needless to say I decided to apply the nails earlier this week and was surprised by how real they looked! The point of my column this week is to prove that when applied, one’s self-sufficiency can prove to be more reliable than most perceive it to be.

cal fair. It was held, and probably still is, on the grounds of Silver Stream School, a rural school long ago closed. The fair had that old country feel to it. Area farmers brought their hogs, beef and dairy cattle, grain sheaves. Women brought garden produce, sewing, and preserves. The booths had the best food; homemade pies that made anything a bakery could manage simply second rate. There was a fastball tournament, with each division in the rural municipality putting up a team, although that evolved to just be teams from the area. Bringing the community together in appreciation of multiculturalism, one ethnic dish at a time By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury

This year’s multicultural day potluck dinner last Saturday at Estevan’s St. Paul’s United Church drew in a crowd much smaller than the previous year’s. “Last year we had close to 200 people so this is a little quiet, but it’s a chance to get out and talk to people and get to know them,” said Pam Gunnlaugson, immigration and settlement co-ordinator for the Southeast Community Settlement Committee. Although there was a smaller turnout than expected, everyone enjoyed themselves, as they laughed, chatted and ate the delicious ethnic food which ranged from Polish perogies, Italian lasagna, Palestinian lentil soup, to everything in between. “I think it’s a good way to bring the community together and raise awareness of all the different cultures in Estevan because people don’t even realize that there are multiple cultures here because we don’t have enough of these events going on,” said Katie Burham, an English as another language instructor at the Southeast Regional College. Marilyn McCutcheon, chairwoman of the Estevan Literacy Group said the event was a success because those from different cultural backgrounds came and shared their customs with the community. She added that multiculturalism in the city has come a long way. “They can share their ethnic foods for one, that’s just so easy. As we look around tonight we see all these beautiful ladies in their gorgeous sari sets, that’s so nice to see that. “We’ve had a lot more immigrant population come to Estevan in the last five years. One of the things that we really needed to do was share our language of English with them so they could communicate with other people,” said McCutcheon. As an instructor, Burham has seen the immigrant population boom firsthand and said it’s a benefit for the city. “Almost every day or every week we have a new student come in. I think it’s great to see diversity in Estevan. It’s not something we used to have a lot of, and so now it’s great to see a lot of different cultures. “It’s a great chance

Residents, such as these five women sported traditional dress from their native land. for me to learn about their culture as well as them learn about our community and the different events that are going on so they can integrate into the society we have here,” said Burham. McCutcheon agrees with Burham and thinks acceptance is the Canadian way. “That is really what a Canadian person is, we are quite open to that. Quite frankly we need people to come and work in our community. We are very happy to have skilled workers from other countries be a part of our community,” she said. Gunnlaugson said that the community is real-

izing that with the labour shortage, they will need to bring in more people to fill jobs. “Of course employers always hire Canadians first, but when you hit a crisis where you can’t keep your businesses open because you don’t have employees, then you realize that alternative strategies might answer that,” said Gunnlaugson. Although most of Estevan’s current population came here for work, many do not stay to build a life, said Gunnlaugson, and that’s what the committee she works with is trying to encourage. “Most people move

here for work, they move here to take care of their family because they don’t have anything in their home

countries, and it’s safe. A lot of people have small children and they’ve been through tragedies, they’ve

witnessed war, they want to raise their kids in a small community that is welcoming,” she said.

Corner Gassed cast and crew say rehearsals are running smooth By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury

Rehearsals kicked off June 21 for the Souris Valley Theatre’s comedic, all-Canadian musical spoof of the hit TV series, Corner Gas. For eight hours a day, cast and crew of Corner Gassed go over every line, every position, every song and every dance until it is perfected. For cast members it hardly seems like a job because it’s doing something they have a passionate drive for. Getting prepared for the role seemed to come easy to a few cast members as they sat around their mock campsite and joked. “I did a lot of watching the original TV show to get some ideas - it’s based quite loosely, but just bringing small town Saskatchewan characters and putting them in a musical setting,” said Gillian Moon who plays Tracey, the spoof character of the original Lacey. “I did the show for nine months already, so I was nine months prepared,” said Kevin Pownell who plays Frank, the spoof character of Hank. “I’m fairly familiar with

the show, but coming to Estevan is really cool. I live in Calgary now, but I grew up in a small town in Saskatchewan, so it kind of feels like coming back to a place I’m familiar with even though I’ve never been here before,” said Jolee Alberts who plays Sandra, the spoof character of Wanda. Bringing the play back to where it originated from falls nothing short of necessary, said cast members. “It is exciting because it is such a Saskatchewan story. I mean, the towns we performed this in previously were not in Saskatchewan, so it’s kind of like it should be performed here,” said Alberts. “It puts a little bit more pressure on us, because now we are in front of the hometown crowd and we have to make sure we get the jokes right, and not offend anyone,” said Pownell. Even Randy Apostle agrees with his cast members. “I’ve been coming out to Estevan for probably 20 years. It’s been really great to watch how the theatre has grown, to watch how the community has embraced the theatre, and it’s wonderful to

Carla Ritchie, stage manager and lighting designer, said the show is right on track and everyone is more than confident that it will be a success. “I think it’s going really well, we are in a really good place. Everything has been blocked and they’ve learned

all the music and they’ve learned all of the dances, so now it’s just doing it over and over again,” said Ritchie. Ritchie is responsible for the general running of rehearsals and the show performances. Apostle agreed with Ritchie. He even joked when asked how the performances would turn out. “As every director in the world will tell you, it’s going

to be brilliant,” he laughed, “We are having a great time. It’s a wonderful, very talented cast, our musical director and choreographer. It’s just been really so far fun for

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A perplexing situation needs to be dealt with in order to avoid problems later on. Rely on both your own sense of what’s right and the advice of someone you trust to help work it out. Take some time to reassess what went wrong, and then see where things can be set right.

sider making some changes in your plans. This is good; don’t resist it. Instead, go with it. it, I absolutely love it; I’m hoping one day they do something like that.” Derosier carries her pager with her 24 hours a day, seven days a week and said her employers at Diversified Services couldn’t be more supportive. “We carry our pagers 24 hours a day. They are very supportive of that; it’s their way of helping out the community by letting one of their employees just go.” Derosier encourages women who are interested in joining the fire department to shed their misconceptions. “I encourage any woman out there to come and apply. I think it’s really a rewarding thing to do and don’t feel intimi-

dated because the guys are very, very supportive. It doesn’t matter - sex, age, or whatever, you are part of the team.”

until afterwards that you kind of think what could have gone wrong there. “You just go on adrenaline. Once the pager goes off, the adrenaline just goes right now and all you focus on is what you have to do to mitigate that situation,” she said. Although at times, and in some places, women are criticized for believing in themselves and performing tasks that were once thought to be a man’s job, Derosier said discrimination is not the word that comes to her mind. “I definitely wouldn’t say discrimination, no, I never felt that; more encouragement. It is almost an admiration because it’s like ‘wow a female in the fire department.’ I encourage other people to do it too, because they do see that a lot people say, ‘wow I didn’t know females could do that’,” she said. Derosier attributes most of this encourage-

“Pray, I do before every call. I’m on victim services too, so before every call I always pray on the way for those people and that we are going to do the best job we can.” Not only does Derosier put out fires, she also helps the Estevan Police Service in relieving a victim’s loved one’s grief. “What we do is we support victims of crimes. We always assist the law enforcement with the next of kin notifications, which is probably one of the toughest things, but also the most rewarding thing when you can help somebody through a time like that,” she said. At times, Derosier admits a situation can be frightening. However, in the heat of the moment, fear stands still. “Probably any of the situations can be a little scary and that’s where your training and your adrenaline takes over and it’s not

For Derosier, it was sheer determination that focused her desire to serve her community. Looking back, she said she would not change a thing. As her pager goes off, her adrenaline skyrockets and as she leaves her house, Derosier prays, not only for herself, and her fellow firefighters but, most importantly, for the victims.

ing experience. “We do a nationally certified program, it’s called NFPA 1001. We are certified, then, to be a firefighter anywhere in Canada. “I found it challenging, yes, but exciting. It’s a really in-depth course that you really know what you are doing after,” she said.

Wakeboard clinic for proved to be a big splash By Rose Ditaranto Of The Mercury

Last Saturday’s wakeboard clinic featured a guest, professional wakeboarder, who taught a boat of six girls aged 10 to 21 a few tricks and enhanced their already acquired skills. “They were taught how to ride and if they knew how to ride, they were taught new tricks. They did really good, they all enjoyed it,” said Angela Johnson, president of the No Boundaries Wakeboard Club. Eleven-year-old Ashlyn Cooley of Oxbow said she got started in the sport about two years ago, and said she has no plans of ever backing away. “I got started a couple of years ago because my parents wakeboard and they wanted to show me how. I think it’ll be something that I’ll have fun with for the rest of my life,” she said.

Cooley said it was exciting to be surrounded by others who share her passion for wakeboarding, and even though she knew most of what was taught, there were a few tricks she hadn’t thought to engage in. “It was a lot of fun being in a boat full of girls who enjoy the sport. She helped us with riding the opposite way than you usually would; just getting comfortable with stuff that you normally wouldn’t do,” said Cooley. Johnson said the event was simply for fun, as is the sport, but girls can choose to go towards the competitive stream. “It’s for fun. You can go competitive if you want, it’s up to you,” said Johnson. When asked whether or not she believed sports were just for boys, Cooley answered most articulately and without hesitation: “I think as long as you’re dedicated to it, anybody can.”

‘Innocent Waterloo football players can move schools’ PROVINCIAL Andy Fantuz of the Saskatchewan Roughriders has not claimed a 1,000-yard season but is noted as the best receiver in the CFL; for now. ‘Riders’ head coach, Ken Miller, said he believes that Fantuz is “good for 1,200 or 1,500 yards, if he can stay healthy. Quarterback Darian Durant said that if they keep him healthy and make sure to put him to the correct positions for plays, he can

definitely “see at least top Canadian in Andy. Injuries have been holding Fantuz back for the last couple of years, but Durant said he came to camp feeling good. NATIONAL Football players at the University of Waterloo set a deadline today for 1 p.m. ET for the school administration to overturn their decision to suspend the program for one year. If the administration

does not make the change today, most of the 53 players will sign on with other schools. Earlier in the week, Canadian Interuniversity Sport said that they will allow Waterloo players to transfer to new schools without penalty. Waterloo decided to cancel the 2010 season after discovering that some players were using performanceenhancing drugs. ••• The Montreal Cana-
