The group hoping to earn Estevan the moniker of Riderville for one day is moving full steam ahead. The Estevan is Riderville committee was in attendance at Monday’s regular meeting of city council to ask for council’s support in their quest to win the competition which is being held by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in recognition of the club’s 100th anniversary. SpokesmanAlf Tide says the community that wins the contest will have the honour of being named Riderville for one day. The winning city or town will also receive $25,000 for their minor sports programs. Tide said the committee has entered the contest and are planning a number of events from May 16 to May 20. “Our kickoff, excuse the pun, is Sunday, May 16 at the Collage Cultural Festival,” said Tide. “We’ve planned a lot of events along with this. We are going to have watermelon carving, field goal kicking, passing and we plan to have a scrimmage game.” Tide added the committee has a number of events planned throughout the week culminating with a parade on May 20. They will also offer prizes to the best decorated house with a ‘Rider theme, the best decorated business and to the school that shows the most ‘Rider pride. “We want to get the whole community involved in this event and I promise you it is going to be a great week. Let’s make Estevan Riderville.”

Young Collie Obsessed With Animal Droppings DEARPAW’SCORNER: We have a lot of nature and wildlife surrounding our property, and much of that wildlife crosses through our yard and leaves “pellets” behind -- deer, skunk, fox, coyote and so on. Our 7-month-old bearded Collie,“Jesse,”isuncontrollably attracted to these pellets and eats them. How do I stop this behavior? -- Cindy K., Clinton Township, Mich. DEAR CINDY: Stopping Jessie from eating those wildlife pellets (droppings, really) is indeed difficult. Dogs instinctively seek out unusual odors and often lick or eat other animals’droppings as part of this behavior -- after all, droppings can smell quite strong. The most effective way to control Jesse’s behavior is to remove the source of the problem -- that is, the droppings themselves. This means combing through the propertypriortolettingJesseout, and picking up and disposing of all droppings. That can be pretty laborintensive, not to mention having Jesse go nuts watching you walk around the yard while he’s stuck inside.Another option is to fence off a portion of the yard big

AS THE WORLD enough for Jesse to run around, while keeping wildlife out. You may be able to combine a couple of methods. In addition to regularly cleaning up the droppings, take Jesse out on a leash and have him “go” in roughly the same area every day. He’ll soon associate this area as his elimination spot. Afterward, spend some time with him on basic obedience (sit, stay, heel) and walk him around the yard on his leash. When he darts out to sniff a dropping or other spot, give him a firm “come!” or “heel!” and, when he returns to your side, a small treat. In short, make obeying you more rewarding than exploring droppings. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Money Problems?

Hello, my name is Jackson, I am Shih-Tzu Cross, male, light and dark grey, cream & white. I was another one of the 4 dogs tied to the fence at EHS. I have since been groomed, I was very matted, one big ugly matte, so I am feeling good not ready for a brand new, hopefully happy adventure with a new family.

My name is Jazz, I am a Jack Russell Terrier cross, I am about 7-8 months old, female. I have short hair mostly white with some brown and black markings, I have the cutest curly tail. I am a little scared when I meet new people but I warm up quickly... oh yeah, I was one of the 4 dogs tied to the fence at the EHS one week.

My name is Lola, I am a puppy 3-4 months old, black, white with some grey right now I kinda have light curly hair, I am a girl. I am going to be a big girl when I am all grown up according to my foot size anyway. I was dumped off at Kendalls. I think I would love to live on a farm or acreage.

We are running low on cat food. Donations of hard food such as: Purina, Special Kitty, Whiskas, Friskies would be great... thank you.

Mixed signals The provincial government is sending out mixed signals these days. In their haste to indicate they are showing fiscal responsibility in a strange new world that informs them they suddenly don’t have enough money to spread around at will, they appear a bit lost. This is a government that has instructed their Crown corporations to “come on home,” with no more, or very limited international market access. That in itself, is a strange edict for this regime that claims they are friends to big and middle-sized businesses. So with a Saskatchewan only focus, they then pull the plug on Saskatchewan’s only local television network, SCN. Arguments can be waged as to whether the local channel was worth the effort and $2.5 to $5 million annual upkeep. The fact that nobody from government had even contacted SCN administration in the past two years, to even bother to find out what they did, how they did it, and how many millions of dollars were being injected into the provincial economy because of it … speaks volumes. Apparently the government mind was made up well in advance. So SCN was yanked with no consultation, a network licence is lost (SaskTel is not a broadcaster and therefore cannot inherit the licence contrary to the government’s word), distance education programming is left to drift and local TV just doesn’t matter. A strange edict for a government that claims they are bringing business home to Saskatchewan. Earlier this year, SaskTel was pulled out of their international business projects. Some were showing success, others were struggling. But it didn’t matter what the businesses were showing, they were told to pull the plug and come home. Then it was announced that a certain segment of SaskTel’s information services based in Saskatchewan, were being cancelled and the jobs were being outsourced to California.

Home on the new range a dilemma for wildlife

So what was the message being sent with that decision? A few months ago, the provincial government announced that they had entered into an agreement with Northland Power, an outside power production business, which allows them to build and operate a natural gas fuelled power generating plant near North Battleford. Apparently SaskPower is incapable of such a project or perhaps Northland has promised to deliver electricity into the provincial grid at a much lower cost. Of course we doubt that very much since Northland will have to be feeding profits and dividends to their shareholders outside the province, as well as maintaining their contractual obligations in Saskatchewan. We’d love to see the numbers attached to this project once it’s up and operating. We just can’t see how it can be done at a lesser cost than what SaskPower could do with a similar mandate. The skeptic in us suggests that we never will see the real numbers attached to this deal since transparency probably wasn’t built into the agreement. We hope we’re wrong, but we suspect that electrical power coming from the North Battleford area plant will be at least a bit more expensive to produce and deliver. Naturally the increase will be easily hidden in the ongoing and overall cost increases that are being implemented by SaskPower and government to cover natural growth and the need to answer to new environmental demands such as the clean coal pilot project near here. It will be easy to blame the major clean coal project at Boundary Dam for the upcoming financial shortfalls at this Crown corporation. Forget the fact that SaskPower has been raped and picked clean by previous administrations as well as the current one for the past 10 years without them breaking a sweat over plans for the future. We’d love to see these mixed messages receive a little clarification from this administration in terms of just where they think they’re heading, but we’re not going to hold our breath in anticipation. And as far as Enterprise Saskatchewan is concerned … well, don’t get us started on that one!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Reward yourself for what’s sure to be a dynamic week with a getaway to someplace wonderful, hopefully with a wonderful someone. You’ll return refreshed and ready for what’s ahead. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS

(January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. ANSWER: The rotator cuff is a band made up of the tendons of four back muscles. The tendons wrap around the topmost part of the upper arm bone, the humerus, to keep the bone in the shoulder socket. Tears of the rotator cuff are a common problem and one of the principal causes of shoulder pain. Small tears can heal on their own. Larger tears almost always require surgical correction. All surgical procedures demand respect. Something can always go wrong. Most people who have had surgery

“Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 1” by Stephenie Meyer and Young Kim (Yen Press, $19.99) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell In case you’ve been living on a desert island for the past couple of years, the gist of the novel “Twilight” is this: Quiet girl moves to gloomy town and falls for brooding classmate, who turns out to be equally drawn to her, despite the pesky fact that he is a vampire who might at any moment snap, kill her and consume all her blood. With talk of soulmates, destinies and lots and lots of yearning, it’s pure

wish-fulfillment for romantic misfits who just long to be understood. Perhaps that’s why the stories seem to have struck a chord not just with dreamy tweens, but with readers of all ages and backgrounds. In addition to the hit movies and endless parade of tangential merchandise that surround the “Twilight” phenomenon, now there’s another version of the original story being offered up to these voracious fans. In concert with author Stephenie Meyer, artist Young Kim has created an extremely faithful graphicnovel adaptation of the tale. The book is labeled “Volume 1” and only covers the first half of the prose version, but it’s a strong enough effort to

give readers hope that the rest of the planned series will be equally effective. Mostly black and white with a few judicious splashes of watercolor, Yo u n g ’s v e r s i o n o f “Twilight” is certainly appealing visually. The style of the layout, characters and backgrounds owes much to the contemporary [SET ITAL]manhwa[END ITAL] techniques common to comics in Kim’s native Korea (similar to [SET ITAL]manga[END ITAL] in Japan) -- the art is vivid, fluid and inviting, with a soft, often sketchy quality that’s pleasing to the eye. Meanwhile, the narrative is brisk and easy to follow, deftly hitting all the important plot highs that the expectant fan will be waiting for with palpitating heart. For while it’s certainly possible for this to be a reader’s first exposure to “Twilight,” it is even more likely to be a supplement to the story for those who have already digested the plot elsewhere. A Real Humdinger Whenbaseballrollsaround each spring, so does its own peculiar vernacular, words that have crossed outside the lines and into our everyday lexicon -- in other words, clichés. I used to work for a woman at CNN who would come back from executive meetings exasperated. She was frustrated, she told me, with a woman executive whom the men seemed to really like. She was convinced it was because she was very adept at using sports terms in her presentations. “Home run, I get ... but she saysthingslike,‘We’regoingfor a base hit here,’ or ‘We’re trying to advance the runners.’ What doesthatevenmean?”sheasked. So one night she broke out pad and paper, and we dissected her presentation, with me supplying the appropriate sporting terms, terminologythatwouldnodoubt endear her to her executives. “We’rehopingtogetagood pitch to swing at so we can drive itintothegapforacleandouble.” “I’mnotadvocatinggoingforthe long bomb here ... this is smashmouth football ... three yards and acloudofdust!”“It’saone-timer to the stick side!” She never told me how well-received her presentation was, but she did say that they looked at her as if she had lost her mind. Every season we hear the terms: dinger, southpaw, rain check, closer, cleanup and for the most part we know what they mean. Southpaw seems to throw a lot of people off, and that’s exactly what the term was supposed to mean. The term supposedly began in the 1800s when a lefty was on the mound, and since most ballparks faced east to prevent batters from having to look into the sun when they hit, it was said the pitcher’s delivery came from the “south side.” “Dinger” is another term that inspires debate. Some say it has its roots in the old exclamation “humdinger,” as in “that swell gal is a real humdinger!” Others claim it stood for the sound of the ball clanging off metal bleachers. Otherssaythat, intheoldendays, away games were transmitted back to hometown announcers over the phone and they would “ding” the receiver to signify a home run ... or something like that. Like the annoying feeling you get when you become conscious of your breathing, now you’re ready for your next staff meeting. Listen as your sales rep describes the real “hit or miss” situation, as your guy in R&D proclaims something to be a “game changer.” Now that you know, you can get a leg up on your competition by thinking outside the lines and coming up with a few turns of phrase yourself. Hit it out of the park!

Q: How is actress Maura Tierney doing in her breast cancer treatment? Will she be back on TV soon? -- Greta D., via e-mail A: Maura’s representative, Christina Papadopolous, said that the 45-year-old actress “has finished treatment and is doing very well, and is happy to move forward with the next phase of her life. That next phase happens to be returning to the FX network’s action-drama “Rescue Me, where she’ll return in 2011 for four episodes as Denis Leary’s love interest during the show’s seventh (and final) season. *** Q: I thought Conan O’Brien was going to be heading to Fox with his late-night talk show, but now I hear he is going to TBS. Is this true? And is he taking over George Lopez’s timeslot? -- Trista W., Seattle A: Conan recently announced that he will indeed be bringing his latenight-hosting duties to TBS. His show will air at 11 p.m., with George Lopez taking on the midnight timeslot with “Lopez Tonight. However, make no mistake: There is no animosity in this timeslot switcharoo. George is the one who actively courted and pursued Conan to sign with TBS, and he couldn’t be happier that Conan accepted. “ I c a n ’t t h i n k o f anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in, George said. “It’s the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy. With a reported eight-figure deal, as well as allowing Conan to own his own show (which he would not have

A: While the former “Dawson’s Creek star hasn’t revealed if there are wedding bells in the future for him and girlfriend Kimberly Brook, I do predict plenty of diapers and pacifiers. She was the epitome of grace, beauty and talent. How are her friends and family doing? -- Edith D., via e-mail A: Not surprisingly, Dixie’s family is heartbroken by her passing on April 10 from complications of endometrial cancer at the age of 70. Husband Hal Holbrook released this statement: “This has been a terrible blow to our family. We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy. Friend and former “Designing Women costar Annie Potts told People magazine: “Dixie Carter was a Goddess.
