Bully Free Zone Students from across the Energy City were joined by their teachers, local emergency services, police and other community members to acknowledge the Day of Pink with a brief walk in downtown Estevan on Wednesday. Clothed in pink, the group of several hundred gathered at the Estevan Court House and marched down three blocks of Fourth Street that had been closed to mark the occasion. Cheers&Jeers Cheers to the Day of Pink walk in Estevan. It’s amazing seeing so many coming out and supporting our youth and getting behind a meaningful cause.

Jeers to tailgaters. Just stay off people’s bumpers, please. I don’t need to see you picking your nose in my rearview mirror.

Cheers to the city of Estevan for filling some of the potholes across the city. It was a long time coming.

Jeers to people who litter so much in parking lots. If there’s no garbage can nearby, just take it home.

Cheers to Bienfait for winning the Big Six yet again. Congrats! That was an amazing series.

Jeers to the lady who cut in line while I was waiting to see the doctor at the walk-in-clinic. Pay attention!

Cheers to the flower in my garden starting to sprout. They look so beautiful! Cheers to people who are getting out and enjoying the nice weather!

When should you Kare? I find it interesting how we live in a time where web sites and publications are previewing an upcoming game’s most violent moment’s, whereas in the 90s, the stories on those pages would be covered with angry protestors and parents who think their children are being exposed to lifealtering material. I appreciate the place we are in now. Yes, it’s one of those columns where I talk about video games, and yes, the game in question, if you haven’t already guessed, is Mortal Kombat X. Vi o l e n c e i n v i d e o games is a topic that has been beaten over society’s head countless times over the years, often perpetuated by acts of real-life violence that no one can make sense of. Video games, as a result, frequently become everybody’s favourite scapegoat, while gun and rape culture take a back seat. In the midst of all this, Mortal Kombat has stood tall and proud, continuously building upon its 13-year-old fighting franchise and the game’s popular fatalities. This was

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling emphasized by its 2011 reboot, which was spearheaded by NetherRealm Studios. Its aforementioned fatalities – gory finishing moves that are accessed by a series of button combinations – are now displayed in stunning HD and realistic graphics. Fatalities are arguably the game’s main attraction, and I’m not going to lie, is one of my favourite parts of the game as well. And in tandem with the game’s technical improvements and realistic presentation, people have become less and less sensitive about the violence, to the point where all the brutality has become a joke. The basic concept involving these onscreen warriors dishing out extreme bloodshed and still getting up for the

next round, is so silly and fun. The fatalities are over the top, to the point where they come off as comical, providing players with moments of hilarity and excitement, not objection and controversy. It’s a bizarre sight to behold, because Mortal Kombat led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in 1994. The game has cleverly built upon its initial video game roots and has become a cultural phenomena, one that is regularly namedropped and endlessly parodied on television. People have come to understand it’s a game that ultimately brings us together, even those who don’t play video games. Many have their interest piqued from the debate it causes.

The onscreen spectacle, interesting characters and intense, comical violence is hard to ignore, but easy to find entertaining. It’s a title the adult crowd can appreciate, most remembering full well where the game started and what it went through in the 90’s. But then, games like Hatred rear their ugly heads, and tarnish that fun and togetherness a game like Mortal Kombat achieves, despite its violent nature. Hatred let’s players assume the role of a serial killer who goes out on a killing spree, mowing down innocent civilians until the player quits or is taken down by the ingame police. The game is still in development, but has drawn a lot of negative attention. The presentation is dark and gritty, and is not surrounded by any story, character, or humour, whatsoever. In my opinion, Hatred crosses that line that Mortal Kombat drew farther away over the past decade. Mortal Kombat is extremely violent, but is set in a silly fictional world that doesn’t resemble ours and is chock-

full of pop culture references and an established fan base that continues to grow because of its increasing accessibility. Hatred is a killing simulation that doesn’t have an underlying message or purpose beyond its attempt to shock players. But violence is not shocking to us anymore, and a game that utilizes it so poorly is going be forgotten, perhaps temporarily enjoyed by a crowd of trigger-happy players who think the idea is hardcore and fun. I’ve seen parents sit in on a group of people playing Mortal Kombat, laughing at the implausibility on screen. I can’t see any group of people hunched around a computer playing Hatred. But that’s the nature of the video game industry, and I appreciated the fact that we live in a society that gives people the freedom to create what they want and allows consumers to acquire it, analyze it and discuss it. So, don’t feel bad if you play Mortal Kombat and love it. In fact, I’ll be online waiting for you to challenge me.

What’s beating our wheat? In reading a recent article on growing concerns from some quarters over the quality of Canadian export wheat, I must say, the old adage about being careful about what you wish for came to mind. The Western Producer story quoted Erwan Boubet, chief executive officer of Geneva, Switzerland-based grain company IFACO. “It is the first time in our history that our clients are asking us to look for other origins in replacement of Canada,” he said in the article. “When you have been the main Canadian wheat sellers in West Africa for 30 years, it hurts when your clients say ‘OK, don’t bother me anymore with your crappy wheat. Sign me something else.’” Weather issues were cited as one reason for inconsistencies in quality, but as a sideline observer of agriculture for decades now, I dismiss that contention since weather extremes are hardly a new issue facing the industry. Heavy rains, late springs, drought, and early fall frosts have impacted quality in the past, but the system seemed capable of dealing with the issues before it became a buyer concern. Rail logistics took part of the blame too. The huge crop of 2013 posed an issue in terms of getting the crop off farm and into export position, but one might have thought, with huge stores of common quality grain, the ability to ensure consistent ship loads would have been

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist made simpler based on being able to access more grain in less spots on the Prairies. So what is a more likely the culprit here? Maybe the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association actually have exactly what they wanted, although a reality where the lone sales edge Canada has consistently had disappearing wouldn’t seem something they would have fought hard to achieve. But the WCWGA lobby might have to look themselves in the mirror to find one of those behind the current concerns. Those against single desk selling, the WCWGA lead along them, may be reluctant to admit the old Canadian Wheat Board did a better job of sourcing grain, and creating consistent loads for exports, but that is appearing the case. It is hard to argue that a single entity, with control of export sales, has more control of the system that do a fractured system of multiple company-sourcing products.

Grain companies also have profit for shareholders as a core goal, and while you might think that means farmers will see profits too, that is not the case. Big companies work on volumes and margins and gross tonnages alongside farmer needs. The two sides are not always going to be achieved in the same way, and company shareholder needs will always trump anyone else. Then there is the general philosophical tilt of our federal government. It’s rather clear they would be fine with a no rules at all agricultural sector, leaving big business free to generate profits in any way they can, and in this case the term big business does not mean land rich farmers. While not yet abandoning their entire role in the sector, the feds have changed the grain commission structure, and one has to wonder if those changes may not be another part of the puzzle in terms of customer dissatisfaction with recent wheat purchases. Canada has long managed to hold wheat market share based on this country’s ability to consistently grow and deliver a high-grade product. Without that ability, we become just another producer of so-so quality wheat, with the millstone of a high cost production and delivery system, trying to find sales. If recent changes are indeed the issue in quality control, the future, as much as it is one many prodders lobbied for, will not be a good one for wheat growers here.

Not much fun in the sun Province restricts tanning bed use by minors By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

This summer, those under 18 will no longer be able to use indoor tanning beds. Saskatchewan is planning to develop regulations that will prohibit the use of indoor tanning beds after careful analysis of the issue across the country, according to Health Minister Dustin Duncan.

Other provinces, including British Columbia and Ontario, already have regulations in place prohibiting youth from using indoor tanning beds. “Our young people are particularly vulnerable to the effects of indoor tanning, and this is one way we can help them lower their risk of melanoma,” Duncan said in a press release, noting the province’s regulations will be crafted

to take other jurisdictions’ experiences into consideration. Prohibition, however, is not the only way people can protect themselves, said Dr. Azeez Khan of the Arcola Family Health Clinic in Carlyle. “There are lot’s of studies and recommendations that say the use of vitamin D supplements can help prevent any side effects or adverse effects of UV

exposure,” Khan said. He noted other lipid lowering drugs and supplements are available, but said vitamin D is the strongest defence against melanoma. Reducing sun exposure in general, he added, can help greatly. Khan said recent clinical studies have shown that teens and people in their

early 20s have a 75 per cent greater chance of obtaining melanoma and other forms of skin cancer through the use of indoor tanning beds. Chemical changes in the body occur through the usage of tanning beds, Khan said, resulting in the increased risk of melanoma. “Surprisingly, the studies also found out that tan-

ning beds can be addictive,” he said. Though the studies clearly show the dangers of youth using tanning beds, Khan said the evidence is not so conclusive with adults. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of sunscreen usage for people of all ages who spend time outside on a sunny day.

Finding the right family car Parents have a host of options at their disposal when the time comes to buy new cars for their families. While dad might have long dreamed of driving the fastest sports car on the market, such a vehicle does not make much practical sense when car trips figure to be made with kids in tow. Finding the right car for a family depends on a host of factors, as what makes a good vehicle for one family will not always make a great choice for another family right down the street. When choosing a car for their families, parents can consider the following factors to ensure they choose the vehicles that best suit the needs of their broods. Cost While cost should not be the only consideration when choosing a family vehicle, parents must determine their budget before beginning their search for a new ride. Aside

from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people will ever make, which only highlights the importance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families. Luxury cars, SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive vehicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids with college educations to consider might find that less expensive vehicles make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leasing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, which can be pricey, while buying outright affords vehicle owners to choose the level of coverage they are most comfortable with. Determine insurance costs on a given model before driving offthe lot with the pedal to the metal.

Use Family cars are rarely limited to getting mom or dad to and from work and for trips to the grocery store. Today’s kids are more active than ever before, and chances are their schedules are as packed as their parents’. Consider the many chauffeuring trips you will have to make in the years to come, and choose a car that is equipped to handle those trips. Parents who double as soccer coaches may benefit from buying minivans that can easily store all that sports equipment, while those whose children participate in activities that take them far and wide may want a car that’s especially fuel efficient. Comfort Luxury vehicles may provide the most comfortable ride, but parents who are not yet ready to go that route need not sacrifice comfort in favor of practicality. Families spend lots of time in their vehicles, and summer vacations or winter holiday road trips are that much more enjoyable when everyone is riding in comfort. While comfort might not be the foremost priority for parents, it is something to consider when buying new family vehicles.

Did you know Private sellers may know that the amount of mileage on their vehicles will go a long way toward determining their asking price, but they may not know that certain mileage milestones can affect how prospective buyers view their automobiles. For example, savvy buyers know that manufacturer warranties tend to expire after three years or 36,000 miles,

Fully Guaranteed Workmanship

Family size The size and potential size of the family also must be considered before buying a new car. Kids grow up and get bigger, and parents who want to have more children down the road should consider just how big they want their family to be before buying a new car. Look for a car that not only suits your family now, but one that will cater to your family’s needs down the road as well. Overlooking this important factor now may force you to replace the car you ultimately buy sooner than you had hoped. Safety Safety is the top priority for many parents as they purchase new cars for their families. Look for a car with a high safety rating and a proven track record of ensuring passengers survive accidents. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (www.iihs.org) as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (www.nhtsa.gov) test and rate new vehicles for safety, and parents should look up the results of these tests and ratings on any vehicle they are considering purchasing for their families.

whichever comes first. That may make a vehicle less attractive to buyers or inspire buyers to ask that the price of an extended warranty be deducted from the asking price of the vehicle. Another important mileage marker to consider is the 60,000-mile marker. Upon reaching 60,000 miles, many vehicles need certain upgrades, including new brakes. Sellers who wish to

unload their preowned vehicle as quickly as possible may want to make these upgrades prior to selling their vehicles and showcase the service records to prospective buyers. If not, sellers should be flexible with their asking price, as buyers are likely to know thatsignificant maintenance could be just around the corner for a vehicle that has exceeded the 60,000 mile mark.

Great apps drivers can use Smartphones are a convenient tool that few people can now imagine living without. Smartphone-toting moms and dads know they always have a camera on hand to take quick snaps of their youngsters, while foodies rely on their smartphones to find nearby restaurants or read reviews of eateries while out on the town. But drivers also can benefit from smartphones thanks to the following apps. · Waze: Commuters who download Waze to their smartphones may wonder how they ever navigated their daily treks to the office without this useful app, which allows drivers to share real-time traffic and road information with their fellow motorists. Drivers can use Waze to save time and gas money and make their com-

mutes less stressful. Drivers who use Waze can actively report accidents and find the least expensive gas prices posted by fellow drivers in their community. · GasBuddy: While fuel prices dipped in late 2014 and stayed low into 2015, today’s drivers are still conditioned to find the most affordable gas prices around. The GasBuddy app makes it easy to do just that, as users can share gas prices in their community, which fellow drivers can then peruse to find the most affordable filling stations along their driving routes. Drivers can even enter their city, ZIP code or postal code to find the cheapest gas in their vicinity. · AAA Mobile: AAA members can use the AAA Mobile app to access AAA services on their smartphones. Such services include trip

planning, member discounts and roadside assistance. The app also includes a mobile version of the motor club’s popular TripTik® Travel Planner, which makes it easy for smartphone users to find club-approved hotels, restaurants and attractions. Drivers can even create and share trip itineraries between their desktop and mobile devices. · Insurance: Nearly every auto insurance provider now offers its own mobile app to policy holders. Such apps may allow drivers to pay their bills, view their insurance identification cards, peruse their policies, arrange for roadside assistance and report claims among other things. These apps put your auto insurance provider at your fingertips and can make it much easier to manage your policy.

Alameda Aces are provincial champs The Alameda Aces outshot the Naicam Vikings 1312 in their two-game, total goals series of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association`s bantam C provincial final to become champions. In Game 1 of the final, Alemeda defeated Naicam 7-6 at home. In Game 2, on the road, the matchup resulted in a 6-6 tie, but the Aces had enough goals to win the series and provincial title. In the final game, Alameda led throughout most of the contest until the Vikings score three unanswered goals early in the period to

gain a one goal advantage. The Aces responded later in the period to tie the game. Each team had their scoring chances to break the tie, and Alameda goaltender Tyren Dorrance made some key saves to keep the score tied. Cole Brooks led the scoring for the Aces by recording had a hat trick and Dahlyn Klassen contributed with two goals. Also, Mykel Bierman added a goal for the team. Many fans of the Aces travelled with the team for the final game to support them.

ADHD drugs linked to suicidal thoughts According to Health Canada, clearer warnings of the risks of suicidal thoughts and behaviours are being added to its prescribing information for drugs used to manage attention hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. The stronger warning labels are being introduced after reports of suicide-related events emerged in patients treated with ADHD drugs. These events included thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts, and in a small number of cases, completed suicide. Health Canada noted in an article on March 30 that these events have been reported at various times during treatment, particularly at the start or during dose changes and after patients stopped using the drug. The ADHD drug known as Strattera was identified as a drug that may result in suicidal thoughts and tendencies in 2005, but the new information obtained by Health Canada suggests these risks may now apply to all other ADHD drugs. ADHD drugs are only available by prescription and are authorized for use in adults and children over the age of six. Health Canada posted the following

brand name and generic ADHD drugs available in Canada: ADDERALL XR (mixed salts amphetamine extended-release) BIPHENTIN (methylphenidate controlled release) CONCERTA (methylphenidate extended release) DEXEDRINE (dextroamphetamine sulfate) INTUNIV XR (guanfacine extended release) RITALIN (methylphenidate) RITALIN SR (methylphenidate extended release) STRATTERA (atomoxetine) VYVANSE (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) Health Canada suggests parents, family members and friends should monitor for suicidal behaviour in patients taking ADHD medications, during and after the ADHD medication is not being used. For more information, visit healthycanadians.gc.ca

Health Canada will be adding stronger warning labels on ADHD medications that will clearly outline risks of potential suicidal behaviour, after reports of patients developing such tendencies while using various ADHD drugs.

Now Hiring Cooks: Three twenty something-year-olds try to recapture their wild college years by starting their own off-campus frat house.
