Bruins skate away with win By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

Tyler Fuhr stopped 43 shots on route to a 6-3 win over the Yorkton Terriers on Feb. 4. Hoping to carry the momentum from last week’s overtime thriller victory against the Flin Flon Bombers, the Estevan Bruins traveled to Yorkton to take on the Terriers who currently sit in last place in the SJHL. Levi Barnstable opened up the scoring for the Bruins halfway through the first period. Wyatt Garagan scored the only goal of the second assisted by Barnstable. Signs of life emanated from the Terriers in the final

The annual McLeod series kicked off in Weyburn on Feb. 4 between the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs and the Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles. Part One of the series went to Weyburn, as their senior boys won 68-63, while WCS’ girls team won 47-45. The teams face off again in Estevan on Feb. 11 at ECS.

period, as Cortlan Procter, Joshua Ellis and Corwin Stevely each scored a goal to give the Terriers a fighting chance. The opportunity, however, quickly slipped away. Kurt Sonne and Mahlon Head each scored a goal, while Lynnden Pastachak caused further damage to the Terriers, scoring two goals late in the third, one of them being an empty netter. Matt Kustra had 30 saves for Yorkton. The Bruins will put their five-game winning streak on the line tonight when they play the Nipawin Hawks at home. The Hawks are sitting in second place in the Sherwood Division.

Josh Rieger tries to get to the puck first in the neutral zone against the Flin Flon Bombers on Jan. 28.

Vaccinate your kids, the obvious choice Another day, another nonsensical fear emerges in our society. This time, it’s about the measles vaccine, which even before the outlandish statements claiming it gives your child autism – which it does not – was still one of the leading causes of vaccinepreventable childhood mortality according to the World Health Organization. How is a potentially fatal disease that we’ve isolated in the mid-fifties and developed a vaccine for not being used by 100 per cent of the people on this planet? Of course, 100 per cent is not possible, but we’re still far from immunity. In 2014, there were nearly 56,000 cases of the measles worldwide, 16 of them were in Saskatchewan within the first four months of the New Year. Let’s briefly go over what having the measles entails. You get a minimum of a four-day fever, a head cold, a horrendous cough and rashes all over

You might be from Saskatchewan if...

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling your body. Complications may occur in a few cases, ultimately leading to death. It’s an airborne disease that is more contagious than Ebola. Despite all the knowledge and all the resources, we have a minor outbreak in the U.S and all but two provinces in Canada – Ontario and New Brunswick – do not have mandatory immunization policies. Even Ontario and New Brunsw i c k , h o w e v e r, h a v e loopholes that allow parents to use philosophical and religious exemptions to prevent their child from being vaccinated, loopholes that are hilariously abused as showcased by the abysmal 43 per cent vaccination rate at Toronto’s Alpha Alternative Jr. School.

Did I mention that measles is more contagious than Ebola? Our beloved canine partners are required to get their shots to prevent a multitude of complications and illnesses from spreading and we dare not give pet owners who refuse to do these things any leeway. Do we not want to protect our children and the human race in general the same way? Saskatchewan offers publicly funded vaccine to children. It’s been proven time and time again that it is not only safe but also effective. Medical research has come a long way, and yes, the smallest fraction of people you could possibly imagine do get a reaction to the vaccines. According to

Excerpt from You Might be from Saskatchewan if… Volume 2 by Carson Demmans and Jason Sylverstre. health officials, however, the risk of measles infection upon vaccination, which is extremely rare, is more frequent than possible side effects of the vaccine itself. We have a lot more to

worry about in our world these days, so let’s not create a baseless argument against a vaccine that’s been saving lives and visibly decreasing the number of cases of measles across the globe for decades.

Using tech wisely, not because of hype In general terms, farmers have been rather open to adopting new technologies. That adoption may not come overnight, but there are always those willing to take the plunge, going back to the first farmers to hang up their horse harness and opt for a tractor. I am sure there were neighbours who thought them mad when they traded perfectly good horses for a smoke sputtering mechanical contraption, but in time tractors revolutionized farming. In my time, which extends past a half century now, we have seen similar dramatic changes into farming. We went from straw-bedded hogs that kept a few head to a farm, to multi-thousandsow units with tons of technology running feeding, monitoring, and electrical within the barn. We went from an era where 50 per cent of farms were left fallow each year, to one where continuous cropping is near universal. I can remember many farmers thinking early adopters of direct seeding were destined to fail. Global positioning system tech followed something of similar pattern, as did acceptance of genetically modified canola varieties, although I would suggest the broader acceptance of both was quicker.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist In my mind farmers are now much more ready to try the innovative as they work to enhance returns. There is, however, a technology adoption curve, said Tracy Greier, with Farm Credit Canada. She spoke to farmers in Canora Jan. 28, and said only about 2.5 per cent are innovative, first-in adopters, with 13.5 per cent in soon after as early adopters. The bulk follow, once the bugs have been worked out thanks to the efforts of early adopters, with the last 16 per cent lagging behind the majority. Those numbers are likely universal, whether talking direct seeding tech for farmers, of flat screen televisions for the general public. Some people want the gadgets the day they come out, others take a wait and see approach, and some lag waiting for the day it finally makes sense for them to take the plunge.

I suppose I fall into the lag pool. I tend to be satisfied with something that has worked for decades. As an example the telephone. Yes I understand the cell phone offers connectivity all the time, but I question how critical that is. I have more years behind me than ahead, and I can’t point to a single time where a cell phone would have been more than a convenience, as opposed to a must. Certainly farmers or anyone in rural Canada has some added safety with a cell phone, if they have coverage, but a cellphone does not take the place of a winter survival gear in the trunk, yet how many cell phone users venture out in winter with no more than running shoes on their feet? So while new technology has benefits, they need to be weighed. Farmers need to understand that tech is a tool. Too often we fall into that murky area where the tool becomes a time consuming toy, like a cell phone, where you take pictures and play games and consume time with fun apps. That said, farmers are great at maximizing what tech can provide them, but as more and more must have gadgets arise, (do we really need a computer toothbrush to measure how we brush?), we need to be sure we are adopting out of need/benefit rather than hype and advertising.

Getting creative for Heart and Stroke By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

Going door to door asking for pledges is a frequently used method for young canvassers helping the Heart and Stroke Foundation, but a couple of local girls are altering the formula. “We’re doing it for grandpa,” said Miley Granberg, who decided to create valentine cards and sell them in packs of 10 for the Jump Rope for Heart initiative at

her school in Pleasantdale. Miley teamed up with her cousin Anna Lise Weinrauch to create the cards for her grandfather, who suffered two heart attacks and a stroke. “But he’s still alive and we love him,” Anna Lise said with a big smile, adding he’s already ordered a couple for himself. When asked why go with Valentine cards, the answer was a swift one. “It’s much more fun than going door to door,” Anna Lise explained. Miley’s mother Melina Reich said that over 160 cards have been ordered so far. “It’s been a lot of hard work, but it’s definitely fun,” Miley said. Recipients of the cards can expect glitter, glued on hearts and hand drawn pictures. Anyone interested in purchasing a pack of handmade Valentine cards can contact Melina directly at 306 421 5749 or on Facebook.

Cameron Robock

On February 7, 2015, nominate Cameron Robock as the NDP Candidate for Estevan Dear fellow New Democrats:

During this time I have developed a bright vision for our riding and our province. I left the oilfield after over a decade of dedication in order to help raise our young family. I acquired a union job for the first time in my life which gave me an understanding of the power of a unionized group. I believe in the importance of family, friends, and farming traditions. I believe a strong economy is a diverse economy that is both vibrant and just. Living in Estevan gives my family and I a strong connection to the hard working people of Estevan and area.

Drilling companies are expecting a difficult first and second quarter. File photo.

Tough 2015 inevitable for drilling industry Employee retention a focus amid slumping oil prices By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

The year of 2015 will be about surviving the storm. The drilling forecast for 2015, produced by the Petroleum Services Association of Canada, shows a major decrease in wells created, a result of the current glut in oil production that’s emerged due largely to a simple lack of demand and according to PSAC president and CEO, Mark Salkeld, there’s no indication that prices are going to rebound any time soon. “The stage is set right now for low oil prices,” he said, adding that on a minor high note, the industry closed out the year of 2014 better than originally expected back in October. In Saskatchewan, and more prominently in the areas surrounding the Energy City, work in the oil fields is continuing at a steady rate but a tough first and second quarter is expected. “We’re bracing for pain,” Salkheld said. “These companies are getting as much work done as they can now before the slowdown and at the same time, they’re coming up with strategies to retain employees because this will turn around, and you need key people in place to make that happen.” Jim Kopec, general manager of Panther Drilling Corp., said work has been lined up for the near future and that three out of their four rigs are currently operational. The loss of some workers has been a set back, but it’s one that Kopec has seen numerous times while working in the drilling industry, an industry, he added, that’s seen far more ups and downs in the past. “We had one rig working for one company for four years, going into its fifth, but 20 years ago that was unheard of,” he said. “We have such a good work force and you hate to lose them, but I’ve been involved with

oil field drilling for 40-some years and that’s just the industry.” Kopec said since his involvement with the drilling industry, the past 12 years have been the most consistent in terms of oil prices and their direct effect Panther’s business, which in 2009, when oil prices crashed and fell below $40 per barrel, was still functioning admirably with the boom in the Bakken. The vast landscape of oil fields southeast Saskatchewan sits on top of comfortably and the excitement surrounding it has diminished dramatically. Combined with the growing number of drilling companies in the area, adversity in the business is expected. “You just have to remain optimistic,” Kopec said. PSAC’s drilling forecast, when compared with drilling forecasts produced by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, both of which forecast steeper declines in activity than PSAC, is a message of hope for the not-so-distant future. “We might gain normality in prices sooner than later, but it’s going to be tough,” Salkeld said. The annual drilling forecasts are based on natural gas prices, crude oil prices and the Canada-US exchange rate. In addition, PSAC uses relationships with members of the oil field sectors across Western Canada to gain an understanding of where each of them stands in terms of activity. “We talk to these guys from Weyburn and the Estevan area, and we get a sense of the up front, front line perspectives,” Salkeld said. Following a number of focus group discussions and the massaging of “massive” amounts of data, a prediction is made.
