Cheers to the person who cleared the snow from our driveway at 436 Petterson Drive. We surely appreciate your kindness.

Jeers to the guy in dodge truck. You couldn’t be kind enough to move over when I was walking down the Avenue? Nope, you speed up and force me and my dogs to jump in to the deep snow in my neighbours yard. I hope you can read lips!

Cheers to the female maintenance worker at the hospital. She knows how to get a job done.

Jeers to shopping local. I just dropped $1,800 at a local store and the clerk barely grunted at me. No hello, thank you or anything.

Cheers to the city employee who cleared the roads last week on Souris Avenue. You did a great job scraping right up against the curb so people can have the widest road possible. Thank you!

Jeers to the Culture of tipping. I know we all have to make a living somehow. However, this tipping business is getting out of control. Everyone who gives a service expects a tip. Well, I also have to make a living but don’t expect a tip every time I smile at a customer or do my job well.

Cheers to the friendly staff at Tim Hortons on King Street for being so friendly when I can’t figure out what I need to order.

The team of Chaelynn Kitz (skip), Angela Hookenson (third), Taylor Marcotte (second) and Halynne Lamontagne (lead), along with coach Shane Kitz, advanced to provincials through a qualifying spiel in Tisdale. (Submitted photo)

Local curlers advance to provincials in Jan. A local curling team has advanced to the provincial junior women’s championship. Skip Chaelynn Kitz (Oxbow) and her team of third Angela Hookenson (Lampman), second Taylor Marcotte (Torquay) and lead Halynne Lamontagne (Oxbow) made it out of the third and final qualifying spiel in Tisdale on the weekend. The rink is coached by Shane Kitz of Oxbow. In the first game of the spiel, the Kitz team played Team Kerr from Regina. After giving up a steal of three in the first end, Kitz hit and stuck for a single in the second. After a blanked third end, Kitz stole one in the fourth and three more in the

fifth to take a 5-3 lead. After exchanging single points in the next three ends, Kerr stole a point in the ninth to tie the game 6-6. With hammer in the 10th, Kitz scored a single point to win 7-6. In their second game, the Kitz foursome played Team Golanowski from Saskatoon. They lost 9-1 in six ends, which dropped them to the B side. Their third game saw the Kitz rink facing Team Murray from Gainsborough and winning 9-2 in seven ends. In their fourth game and third of the day on Saturday, Kitz played Kerr again, winning 10-4 in eight ends to advance to the B final on Sunday morning.

The B final was a rematch against Golanowski. The game began with Kitz giving up a steal of two in the first, then scoring two in the second and stealing two more in the third for a 4-2 lead. Golanowski responded by scoring two in the fourth to tie the game. Kitz scored a point in the fifth and stole a single in the sixth. Golanowski got a single in the seventh. Kitz then scored a point in the eighth and stole one in the ninth to put them up 8-5. She then ran Golanowski out of rock sin the 10th end to capture a berth at provincials. The junior women’s championship will be held Jan. 1-5, 2015 in Humboldt.

Buzzfeed’s got nothing on us A few days ago, I participated in a graduation panel at Humber College in Toronto. I remember going to school there years prior, grinding through the journalism program and attending these panels. Journalism graduates who had found employment within their field of study would return to the school and interact with students, who would gaze upon these mythical beings returning to Earth, confidently spreading the message of hope to us earthlings, as we still struggled to understand our place in the universe. A lot of these graduates in the past and even today - specialized in broadcast and therefore found jobs involving a lot of on or off-camera work. I wanted to make sure I attended the panel this year because while I was in school, I was unsure if I’d ever find a job that involved newspaper reporting. I knew people were finding jobs after college, but where exactly remained a mystery, and the success stories that were brought to light often involved broadcast students. I wanted to reassure students that newspapers are still a thing, an evolving, shape-shifting, good-for-wrapping-breakables-but-also-forreading-about-news thing. “Print is dead,” was a phrase that singed by ear drums frequently in school, but I knew it wasn’t true. During the panel, a student brought up the internet news media company known as Buzzfeed, which pools trending topics and news stories from around the world and transforms it into an interesting mix of serious journalism and entertainment-oriented content. He said Buzzfeed and websites similar to it are essentially becoming the “go-to” place for news. He asked us what our thoughts were about that and what it meant for future journalists. I asked him where he lived, and he responded with Spadina, a fairly prominent

street in Toronto. I followed up with “What kind of news has Buzzfeed written about your neighbourhood?” His face went into backtracking mode but moments later answered with a “probably nothing.” I looked it up after, and aside from a Spadina-based restaurant making a “Top 17 delicious junk food to eat in Toronto” list, news in the community wasn’t covered much. And by that I mean it wasn’t covered at all. I told him Estevan’s community newspaper has been running for over 100 years and people don’t go to Buzzfeed for their regular dose of news regarding happenings in Estevan and the surrounding area. Excerpt from You Might be from I’m sure many locals go to their Saskatchewan if… Volume 2 website occasionally to find out what the 20 most common names are for by Carson Demmans and Jason Sylverstre. badly-behaved children or for a challenging Grey’s Anatomy quiz, but beyond that, Buzzfeed is quite limited in terms Toronto, it’s kept alive by life-support, of what it can provide for a small community. like websites and Twitter/Facebook accounts. End of the year a struggle for survival December is a wonderful month marred by a constant barrage obligations and exhausting climate. It’s known as the crazy season for a reason. Everybody is a little more on edge than at most other times of the year. Things have to happen and things are happening whether we like it or not. It’s one thing to get caught up in the tidal wave and ride it out, and it’s an entirely other thing to get involved, to make something a little bit more out of the holiday season. It’s great to do something. It’s great to get involved and do your best to make the end of the year a special time in your life and the lives of people around you. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. And that’s what keeps me conflicted each December. I’ve said before that I don’t like to say no when an opportunity presents itself. I’d rather be the guy who’s open to adventure, who answers in the affirmative to doing more, and who wants to help out and make this time of year a little better for others, even if it’s just in small ways. It takes its toll, but I don’t have any delusions that I’m some kind of hero. Nobody gets

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers through this season unwounded, and we all just try to do our best. I just try to follow the example of others who I see getting engaged, helping out, putting on their yes-man manners. This means that through the desire to do more makes everything an obligation. This time of year lends itself to opportunity and invitations, options and endless activities, along with snow shoveling, a chore we’ve spent the previous eight months forgetting everything we’ve ever known about it. Primarily, it seems, there is gift giving, a philosophy I can get fully behind while my wallet has more trouble reconciling the concept. Every year there are more people to exchange gifts with, leaving less time and thought to go

into each individual one. But it isn’t just gift giving. There are suppers and events to attend, which are great, except when overcoming two nearly insurmountable impediments: inertia and cold weather. Combined, those two forces are extremely lethal. There is perhaps no worse month of the year to dig deep within yourself and find an ounce or two of extra motivation. We’re all suffering from varying levels of seasonal affective disorder, as the weather makes it unpleasant to experience the outdoors. The sun barely gets above the tree level, rising much too late and setting much too early. We’re in the waning days of a steady march toward the winter solstice, marked each year by the least amount of sunlight we’ll experience. We know it’s coming. We’ve been taking note of the changing light for months, but it’s in December when it’s too much, when I’m finally overwhelmed by the daily darkness. With more things to attend and your lowest energy levels since last December, this 12th month of the year is, for many of us, more a question of survival than enjoyment.

Catching up with old students DOUBLE DOUBLE By Betty Ribling Correspondent

The first major event of the 2014-15 season for the Estevan Mermaids synchronized swimming club was held in North Battleford on the weekend of November 21 to 23. A skills development camp led by Synchro Canada was held on Saturday. That evening at the awards banquet, the Mermaids captured three trophies. Rebecca Duncan was awarded a trophy for most improved recre-

ational athlete. Good Job Rebecca. Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Roger Bezaire. Mr. Bezaire was born in Torquay. He passed away on Nov. 26 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan at 93 years of age. Prayers were held Nov. 28 at the Chapel of Hall Funeral Services. Funeral mass was held on Nov. 29 at the St. John the Baptists Roman Catholic Church in Estevan with Rev. Brian Meredith officiating. Interment was at Estevan City Cemetery.

Mr. Bezaire farmed for many years in the Outram area. He was an exceptionally good neighbor and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Many Outram and Torquay residents attended the Festival of Trees event held on Nov. 29 at Affinity Place in Estevan. This is a fundraising event for the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation. The meal was good and the entertainment was exceptional. I had the privilege of sharing a table with a former student, Leah Skjonsby, formerly of Tor-

quay. She was my Grade 5 student when I taught at Torquay. I was delighted to see her. There are many rewards in teaching school. Congratulations to Paul and Stacey Mantei on the birth of their baby girl, Joylynne Emmarie Mantei, who arrived on Nov. 26. Joylynne weighed seven pounds and 13 ounces. She has five brothers and one sister. Grandparents Wilma and Jerry Mantei and greatgrandparents Lois Mantei and Hank and Johanna Lievaart are excited with the new arrival.

Hounds edge Bruins in shootout It was a high-scoring affair that needed a shootout to decide, and in the end the Notre Dame Hounds came out on top. The Hounds defeated the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins 5-4 on Tuesday at Affinity Place. Notre Dame, playing the Bruins for the third straight game, led 4-2 after the first period. But the Bruins tied it up during a strong second and pushed it to overtime. Four shootout rounds were required, with Hounds defenceman Spencer Trapp scoring the winner. Austin Lightfoot got the visitors on the board on a power play less than three minutes in, beating goalie Tyler Fuhr from point blank range.

Bruins defenceman Josh Rieger tied the game two minutes later on a feed from Keegan Allison, sending teddy bears flying on Estevan Mercury Teddy Bear Toss night. Just 39 seconds later, Jared Martin restored the Hounds’ lead. Less than two minutes after that, Cory Anderson scored shorthanded on an odd-man rush to put Notre Dame ahead 3-1. Allison got the Bruins within one at the 12:45 mark on a power play, potting a goal on the doorstep. Anderson’s second of the game came four minutes later to give the Hounds a 4-2 edge. Mahlon Head netted the Bruins’ third goal at the 14:40 mark of the second period.

A few minutes later, with 56 seconds in the period, the puck deflected high in the air and landed in the crease, where Wyatt Garagan jammed it past goalie Benjamin Patt. The Hounds outshot the Bruins 13-4 in the third period, but the frame went scoreless. Shots on goal were 37-25 for the Hounds, with Fuhr making 33 stops and Patt stopping 21. The Bruins are on the road this weekend. They will visit the Melfort Mustangs tonight, the Flin Flon Bombers on Saturday and the Nipawin Hawks on Sunday. They also have a pair of home games next week, hosting the Mustangs on Thursday and the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. at Affinity Place.

Coalers grab second straight win It was a quiet week in the Big Six Hockey League, with only three games. On Friday, the Bienfait Coalers got their second straight win, edging the Arcola-Kisbey Combines 7-6 on home ice. On Tuesday, the Wawota Flyers defeated the Oxbow Huskies 5-2 in Oxbow.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

• Is it a great price? Before you rush to stock up, read the signs in the grocery stores to make sure the item that looks like such a good deal really is. Sometimes, products are "featured" with a tag that looks like a sale price, when the real price is only pennies more or no savings at all!

On Wednesday, the Carnduff Red Devils were to visit Wawota. The Red Devils remain in first place at 5-1, with their lone loss coming at the hands of the Coalers. Bienfait is in second place at 4-2, followed by the Redvers Rockets (3-2), Wawota (3-2), Midale Mustangs (2-0-1), Arcola (2-5) and Oxbow (0-6). Carnduff’s Isaac Friesen and Dan Moriarty, as well as Wawota’s Brent Struble, are tied for the league scoring lead with 14 points apiece. Friesen leads the league with nine goals.

Page 7

The rest of the top 10 include Bienfait’s Brennan Wrigley (13 points), Wawota’s (Riley Riddell (11), Jon Gaudet (10) and Justin Lamontagne (10), Arcola’s Troy Miller (10), Carnduff’s Trevor Geiger (10) and Arcola’s Tayler Balog (nine). Midale’s Shane Marsh has the top goals-against average at 1.44. There are three games this weekend, beginning with Redvers at Oxbow tonight. On Saturday, Midale visits Wawota while Bienfait is at Carnduff. On Tuesday, Midale is in Bienfait. Wednesday sees Carnduff in Wawota and Arcola at Redvers.

Try rubbing a bit of it over a small cut for faster, more natural healing. • "To separate yolks from egg whites, simply crack eggs into a shallow bowl and 'suck' the yolk out using an empty plastic water bottle. Early school start next year welcomed By Norm Park normpark@estevanmercury.ca

The Ministry of Education’s decision to change the legislation regarding their edict not to begin a school year before Labour Day is being met with approval from various educational sectors. The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation issued a release stating they were in favour of legislative amendments announced by Education Minister Don Morgan about the proposed changes that will allow a school year to start prior to Labour Day in years when Labour Day falls after Sept. 5. The administration at the South East Cornerstone Public School Division also voiced approval of the move, which will now give the school calendar builders a little flexibility in designing a new 197-day, 950-hour academic year. The move was pre-

cipitated by the fact that Labour Day falls on Sept. 7 in 2015, which would have created a major problem. And, 2016, wasn’t looking that promising either with a Sept. 5 Labour Day. Randy Cline, STF’s vice-president, said “we see the introduction of this legislation as a first step in addressing some of the issues impacting teacher and student time. “This change allows school boards to be more flexible in creating calendars in order to reflect local needs.” Cornerstone’s director of education Lynn Little, who has worked on school scheduling as part of her previous duties as superintendent of education, said she knows first-hand how challenging it can be to design a school calendar that teachers, families and administrators can all embrace. “This change is absolutely positive because it will allow us to get those

950 hours in and still organize all the (school year) breaks,” Little said. “If the legislated changes aren’t made, we couldn’t have done it without cancelling a break in February or reducing a Christmas or Easter break or lengthening the school day. This gives us a little predictability and continuity for the future.” Little agreed the 201516 school year would have been the most challenging with the latest re-start imaginable of a school year. “Frankly, if the change wasn’t made, the traditional February break would have been in jeopardy,” Little added. Kelly Hilkewich, the deputy director of education for Cornerstone, is charged with the task of forming a committee that will come up with three options for a proposed school year calendar in 2015-16. Those options are then presented to all Cornerstone employees who vote for

their preferred dates/breaks with the results going to the board of trustees for approval or rejection. The public board also works in tandem with the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division and its board to provide continuity in scheduling for students throughout southeast Saskatchewan. “We were contemplating an amendment was in the works, so Kelly waited a bit to work on this item,” said Little, noting that usually the options are voted on and a new school calendar adopted early on in the new year, but this slight delay would probably not hinder the process. Cline noted the teaching profession supports changes to the school year and school day that will focus on creating optimal teaching and learning environments for students based on sound, current educational research and developed collaboratively and transparently.

WAITING ON PROGRAM

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2014

Police focus on impaired driving throughout December The traffic safety spotlight for December is impaired driving. Law enforcement across the province will be increasing resources and paying extra attention to drivers impaired by either alcohol or other drugs. “The holidays are almost here and people will be getting together with friends, families and co-workers to celebrate the festive season,” said Andrew Cartmell, President and CEO of SGI. “It’s important to plan for a safe ride home if you will be drinking alcohol this holiday

season to ensure not only your own safety, but that of others sharing the road.” Impaired driving remains a top contributing factor in fatal collisions in Saskatchewan. In 2013, it was the number one killer on our roads – 29 per cent of all fatalities were alcohol or drug-related. During the holiday season alone (Dec. 1, 2013 to Jan. 3, 2014*), there were 109 alcohol/druginvolved collisions provincewide, resulting in 39 injuries. “You may think you’ve had only a couple drinks, or

you’re not that impaired – but if you have to convince yourself you’re okay to drive, you’re probably not,” said Cartmell. “Don’t put your life or anyone else’s at risk. Make a conscious decision to not drink and drive.” There are many options to get home safely: choose a designated driver in advance, call a cab, call a friend or family member to pick you up, use a designated driving service, take the bus or call Operation Red Nose in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and The Battlefords.

SGI also has a free SafeRide app to help you keep track of your options. Earlier this year, SGI implemented several recommendations made by the all-party Special Committee on Traffic Safety to make our roads and highways safer. Saskatchewan now has tougher penalties for driving

while impaired by alcohol or other drugs, including: • Zero drug and alcohol tolerance for drivers under 19 years of age, and for all drivers in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program and Motorcycle GDL program. • Drug-impaired drivers are subject to the same
