Taking sides sends a message You might Much has been said about a former radio host who was fired recently from the CBC. I don’t want to delve too deeply into this, especially since so much about this bizarre and potentially disturbing situation is still unknown, but an alarming scenario has already reared its head. It involves the thousands of people who, so quickly, jump on the hold-on-toyour-horses-he-must-be-innocent bandwagon, a bandwagon that has garnered an unsurprising amount of momentum. I say unsurprising because it’s never surprising to see a charming young - or I guess in this case middleaged man, whatever - get caught in a messy web but still receive all the pity in the world, despite the, albeit unproven, alternative, that he did in fact commit acts of sexual violence. Now, I completely agree that a person losing his or her job because the company he or she worked for was displeased with the happenings in his or her bedroom, is unequivocally unfair. However, when allegations involving sexual violence and comments toward a colleague that go like “I want to hate f*** you,” crop up, how can one be

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling so quick to assume a seemingly innocent looking man is incapable of disturbing behaviour like this? It highlights the systemic problem that engulfs our society, and is represented perfectly by the fact that a man needs only to post a 1000 word essay on Facebook to garner 30,000 likes on his Facebook page alongside thousands more heartfelt messages telling him, “it’s going to be okay.” Women, however, risk further assault and ridicule when they publicly reveal a personal crisis. Just look at the recent GamerGate fiasco, a situation that largely revolves around a massive online mob that has forced numerous women in the game development world out of their homes as a result of death threats aimed directly at them and their family. That’s something that happens a lot to a woman when she reveals to the public that she’s being harassed. Only when she reports

it to the police is it finally taken seriously, sometimes. The women taking the brunt of this online harassment are just a fraction of the overall patriarchal landscape and me writing about it isn’t doing it justice. So I won’t try and describe it, or other cases, any further. But, is it not a huge problem that a police report has to be filed for a woman’s voice to be heard in cases of sexual violence? Shouldn’t all cases of sexual assault be taken seriously? Why is the idea that women fabricate these situations of assault so prevalent? Without a doubt, instances where a woman fabricated a story about sexual violence to get back at her boyfriend or husband for some reason I can’t think of right now, have likely happened. I’m also certain, that these instances occur a lot less, like, a hilariously lot less, than the alternative, where she’s telling the truth. As I mentioned, we don’t know the details and I’m not saying Ghome-

be from Saskatchewan if...

Excerpt from You Might be from Saskatchewan if… Volume 2 by Carson Demmans and Jason Sylverstre. shi did what the allegations claim. I’m just saying, there are, absolutely, two sides to this story. One of them, unfortunately, is being taken less seriously by a large group of people, who need to realize that the way they’re dismissing these serious allegations, could very well negatively influence other women who want to

come forward about being assaulted. As I finish writing this, the total number of women involved in this story rises to eight, one of which is Actress Lucy DeCoutere. That’s eight women, eight similar disturbingly similar stories of abuse. Doesn’t look like much of a conspiracy anymore, Ghomeshi.

Taming the beast, that is weather, isn’t easy If there is one topic that always gets discussed whenever farmers get together, it is the weather. When I was a youngster, I can remember the gatherings in the agent offices of local rural elevators. Farmers waiting their turn to deliver a load of grain would ‘hang-out’ over coffee and talk yields and weather. If the conversation lasted long enough, generally winter deliveries when time was less rushed than at harvest, talk might include the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs, or the local Ramblers, the senior team in nearby Tisdale. Weather, however, was always first up as topic. In most farm houses the first thing that happens after crawling out of bed in the morning is a trip to the kitchen where it is a 50/50 scenario whether the coffee pot is turned on first, or the radio to hear a weather forecast. Such is the reality of a way of life where timely rains, untimely storms and frost, or dayafter-day of extreme heat all have a direct impact on how much money the farm will generate in a given year. In recent years talk, at least in the spring, has meant talk about rain.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist The deluges which hit several communities hard on July 1, 2010, and the more general flooding of late June this year being the two biggest topics of conversation regarding weather long after the events themselves. It now appears severe rain events are likely to be more the norm in the coming years, at least, which is how larger weather influencing events on a global scale are being interpreted by some. Evelyn Browning-Garriss, an historical climatologist and author of the Browning Newsletter, told the 2014 Oilseed & Grain Trade Summit the eastern Prairies are in for more rain. According to a Western Producer article, “the new normal, which includes wet springs for Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan, is the result of the Pacific Ocean being in a cool phase and the Atlantic Ocean being in a warm phase.

Browning-Garriss said they’re going to remain that way for a long, long time. “The Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which operates in 50-year cycles, switched to the cool phase in 2006, while the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, which turned hot in 1995, tends to stay in that phase for 40 years and then switch to the cool phase for 30 years. “Browning-Garriss said prevailing western winds take cool air from the Pacific across the Prairies in spring, where it meets with hot and wet air from the Atlantic. “The epicentre of that collision is near Manitoba’s Red River Valley, which means at least another 20 years of excessively wet springs for the area.” Back on a Prairie farm it might be a little difficult to get one’s head around the great oceans impacting weather here, or the idea the patterns are decades long. But the bottom line does seem to be more rain ahead, and that means farmers will be under the gun to get crops planted, and under the threat of losing acres to flooding. While there is nothing farmers can do to change the weather, it will require some innovative thinking to deal with potentially years of wetter than normal springs.

Hotel association becomes diamond sponsor for games The host committee for the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games added its second diamond sponsor on Oct. 28. The Estevan Hotel Association made a donation of $50,000 to achieve diamond status. As a result, the association got to choose a venue to be the title sponsor of, and they picked the soccer venue. Hotel association member Ruth Wall, who is the general manager of the Suburban hotel, presented the donation to committee member Kelly McConnell and soccer representative Kevin Mortenson. “It is very valuable to our committee to have sponsors joining us at this time. We have lots of work to do prior to the 1,800 athletes arriving in our city in July of 2016. Having sponsors we can count on ensures that we can make the Games the best possible Games for those athletes,”

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2014

said McConnell. Hotel association spokesperson Rebecca Westling said, “We are excited to be part of the Estevan 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games and all that it means to the community. We chose the soccer venue as we know there will be lots of athletes participating at that venue and because of the positive reputation that soccer has in our community. This is a very exciting way for the Energize Estevan funding from the Estevan Hotel Association to be utilized.” Wall said the association is “trying to initiate growth in the community,” thus the commitment. Three of the 13 venues for the Games have now been sponsored. Marketing and communications co-chair Brenda Lyons noted that the fundraising effort is “in its infancy stages.”

Drivers recognized at Speedway banquet Drivers from across southeast Saskatchewan were among those honoured with awards on Saturday at Estevan Motor Speedway’s annual awards banquet. The annual dinner recognized drivers, volunteers and the rest of the people who make the track work. Awards were presented, items were auctioned off and comedians provided the entertainment. The rookie of the year awards were given to Landon Runge of Lampman (hobby stock), Gary Goudy, Jr. of Stoughton (stock car) and Jett Big Eagle of Manor (modified). Also recognized at the banquet were the track’s 2014 season champions: Steven Pfeifer (modified and late model), Jordan Durward (stock car) and Brad King (hobby stock).

Meanwhile, two people were inducted to the Speedway Wall of Fame. The Wall of Fame is a permanent tribute to the hard work and dedication of volunteers from the beginning of grassroots racing to the present. The two inductees were Don Cook and Carl Maley. Cook has been a race fan all his life. In the 1960s, he raced snowmobiles and instilled that love of competition in his son Colin, who has raced in the modified class at the Speedway. Don was part of Colin’s crew during his racing years, and when asked if he would help with track preparation, he was more than willing to volunteer his time. Although he worked and farmed full time, he did track preparation for eight years. He

Pfeifer, of Bowbells, N.D., narrowly edged out Mason Big Eagle in the modifieds and Tyson Turnbull in the late models. Durward, a native of Trenton, N.D., emerged as the stock car champion after a chaotic finish which saw four drivers going in with a legitimate chance to win. Gregg Mann was the runner-up. King, who is originally from Alaska and now lives in Parshall, N.D., dominated the hobby stock circuit early and then held on to beat out Leevi Runge. The Clint Prette Memorial Award normally goes to a sportsmanlike driver, but the EMS board decided to do something different this year, and the Prette family was on board. This year, the award was presented to volunteer Tim Pippus.

has attended all but two races since EMS was built in 2000. Maley began his racing career in the 1960s with his two brothers. Racing was in their blood from the beginning. Together, the Maley brothers and their dad, who was in the pit crew, took dirt track racing to a new level. Maley has won various championships and was an integral part of the early racing scene in Estevan. He has travelled to many American tracks, promoting EMS every chance he gets. Maley retired from racing around age 40 and has never missed a race at the Speedway since. Trevor Gowen was the master of ceremonies for the evening, and three comedians provided the entertainment: Tyler Penner, Paul Rabliauskas and Mike Green.

Show Some Love... Adopt a Pet! Hello. My name is Bowser. I am a 2 year old male shar-pei cross. I am quite a shy guy, and need someone who has patience for me to adjust. Pretty please come down to visit me! I also LOVE other dogs! They make me come out of my shell. If you have a pet that is vaccinated I would love to have a play date! Did I also mention I am fixed and have been here for quite awhile?

Hi! I’m Darby! I am only a year old and I am a Pyreneese x German Shepherd. I’m a very smart boy and very affectionate! I had a check up with a vet, and I need a surgery on my left back leg so I can be 100%! Will you sponsor me? Feel free to come down and grab a sponsorship form from the Estevan Humane Society as well.

Spayed and neutered pets are much happier pets. The Estevan Humane Society reserves the right to refuse any adoption.

Thank you for your continued support!

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2014

with Kevin Kobitz

co-ordinator of the Estevan Student Basketball Association How did this league get started? About 10 years ago, a woman named Debra Lindquist wanted to give her daughter more opportunities to play basketball because she loved it so much, and so she started up this league. She asked me to coach with her and that’s how ESBA got started. You’ve mentioned before how the league has been kept on the ‘down low,’ over years, but there’s still a big turnout every year. What draws these kids in? It’s another alternative to hockey that kids can get involved in. It’s also a cheap sport to get into. It also takes place one night a week so it doesn’t tie them up and they still have a free weekend. Kids who aren’t that into basketball still come out for those reasons and learn some of the basics and have fun. It’s a huge draw for kids that are really into the sport. Do you have a favourite moment from the past 10 years? I have a lot of memories of that involve kids having fun and learning the game. Some groups have been better than others but I don’t have a particular group that stands out. It’s just nice to see a kid I taught here in kindergarten play basketball at the Comp. and get to that higher skill level. That’s something I love seeing.

You don’t seem to have trouble getting the kids to show up. Has it been hard getting coaches to join the league? Well, we started off with four coaches, which over time dwindled down to two. But word of mouth has attracted a lot of volunteers who are committed to coming out and helping teach kids some basketball. Shane Davenport (teacher from Westview School in Estevan) and I have been at this for pretty much the entire time this league has been

around. I was born and raised here, too, so it’s nice to have something like this up and running around here. What is the league’s ultimate goal? The goal of this league is to create better basketball players for the future, for high school and other levels of play. Teach them fundamental skills, here, so they can carry those skills and develop them as they reach that next level of play. What is your favourite part about basketball? Everything (he laughs) I love everything about basketball. But I really like teaching it, I always have. Seeing kids get better at the game and knowing I had something to do with it always makes me happy.

Komarnicki recalls Ottawa shooting By Jordan Baker editor@estevanmercury.ca

Estevan’s Ed Komarnicki never thought he’d see the day where a gunman stormed the Parliament Building. However, it happened on Oct. 22. Shot and killed was Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was standing guard at the Canadian War Memorial, and then stormed the Parliament Building where he was shot and killed in a fight with security forces. Komarnicki was in the Conservative Party caucus meeting representing the constituency of SourisMoose Mountain as MP when the events unfolded. In the meeting just off the hall where the gunfight happened, Komarnicki huddled up with his Conservative peers where they barricaded the door to prevent entry and waited for news. “You think that something like this could happen,” said Komarnicki about some sort of an attack at Parliament. “But you certainly don’t expect it to happen.” He said they hear noises from time to time throughout the Parliament Building, so “you don’t react, but I think when the rapid fire shots were heard inside the room, there’s no doubt people knew something was wrong. The first instinct is to get out. I’m not sure that’s wise, but that is the instinct. “When I was in caucus I heard a boom or booms and thought that was an unusual sound. Then I heard live fire like pops from a handgun, and I realized something untoward was happening outside. I heard more shots and there were quite a few of them, so the first thought is who is firing and why are they firing?” The shots were being fired in the hall just outside the Conservative caucus meeting room where Komarnicki was. The questions came fast, and there were lots of them. Some would be answered before long but not all. “The first reaction is what’s going on? Obviously it was something bad not good. Who’s firing? How many people are in the building? What does it mean to us in the room? The first reaction is to leave the room if you could, and I think security thought it would be best to just lock the doors to prevent them from coming in.” So they stayed in the caucus room, locking and barricading the door with furniture.

“The height of the tension was wondering who’s involved? How many? And what can you do?” said Komarnicki. Those were the unanswered questions the MPs were waiting to learn inside Parliament, while Canadians everywhere waited for the same answers. “The biggest concern was in the next 15, 20 minutes, while you were sizing up what the situation was. It was fair to say those of us inside had the view that if somebody’s coming through, if it’s one we can probably do something about that. If there’s more than one, then there’s probably nothing you can do, especially if they’re armed. You just, sort of, wait and see what happens.” After time passed, he said the tension inside the caucus room went down. Security went from room to room throughout the building, scouring offices, and in some cases, breaking into rooms in order to complete a full assessment of the situation. Nobody else was found and after the confusion made way for greater clarity of the events, it was determined by police to be a lone gunman. Komarnicki was among his Conservative Party peers for the remainder of the day, sitting tight until about 6 o’clock that evening, when they were permitted to leave Parliament. Not long after the final shots were fired, the MPs were briefed by Kevin Vickers, the sergeant-atarms, who said the person who had gained entry was shot dead. “The thoughts that I’ll mostly remember for a long time is hearing the shots and also walking out, being escorted out of the House, with what appeared to be sharp shooters around and a row of heavily-armed personnel who formed an alley between the building and the bus.” Komarnicki said going back the next day and sitting in the House of Commons was therapeutic for the MPs and for him in particular. “I would say the mood in the place was jubilant, not celebratory, but in some sense defiant that we’re here, that we’re not going to be cowered and we’re going to move forward.” Komarnicki said partisanship was torn down temporarily within the House, as the MPs came together as colleagues of the Canadian stripe, rather than combatants of varying political views.

Join us in standing on guard for Cpl. Nathan Cirillo’s son On October 22, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was shot and killed as he stood on guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Glacier Media, which owns this newspaper, has started a crowdfunding campaign in his honour. The money will be donated to a trust fund for his six-year-old son. Both FundAid and Fundrazr, our crowdfunding partner, have waived the service fees. Cpl. Cirillo was motivated by the values the men and women in our Armed Forces have died for. We invite you to join us in paying tribute to his life. Go to FundAid.ca and search for We Stand On Guard For Cpl. Nathan Cirillo’s son

If a special menu is what your interested in, we can discuss a plan for you and your guests.

We also serve our regular dine-in menu, we will set up a special buffet or customize a menu. Dine in or we will cater to your location.
