DUI case adjourned On April 5, Randy Mack’s case was once again before the Estevan provincial court, with judge Jeffery Kalmakoff presiding. Mack is charged with one count of driving under the influence (DUI) causing death in the January 31 death of Michael Pacholko. Mack’s lawyer requested an amendment to his recognizance. Prior to the ammendment, Mack was under house arrest and permitted only to leave his residence when accompanied by one or both of his parents. His lawyer requested that the recognizance be changed to allow Mack to travel to or from work, in light of the fact that he is looking to obtain employment with a trucking company out of Halbrite. This request was granted by Kalmakoff and Mack is now permitted to travel unaccompanied to and from work, provided that he report to the Estevan RCMP any changes in his employment status. His case was otherwise adjourned, as defence stated it was still waiting on full disclosure. He is scheduled to re-appear in Estevan provincial court on May 17 at 10 a.m.

Overactive Bladder Ruins Life DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I havetoruntothebathroomallday long. If I don’t make it in time, I have an accident. This has made me so nervous that I have given up on all thoughts of a social life. It’s ruining my life. If we go to a restaurant, I must have a table near the restrooms, or I won’t sit down. What can be done? I’ll try anything. -- P.G. ANSWER: Your condition is an overactive bladder. Conditions like a bladder infection can be a cause. Often, however, muscle contractions take place without

any cause ever being found. You have to see a doctor who can look for things that are easily treated, like an infection. If no cause is discovered, then you can reprogram your bladder to not react like this when it’s only partially filled. For two days, time the intervals between bathroom visits. Add 5 minutes to the shortest interval and hold off on urinating for that time interval for a week. Hey, my name is Tucker, I am still a puppy, I am just 10 months old, so I am full of fun & more fun. I am a male Terrier Cross, black. I don’t mind it here but I bet it would be great to have my own family and a yard to run in.

Please remember a pet is a life time commitment. We will be completing our outdoor run this Spring, we will then have 6 new dog kennels and runs, we would really appreciate donations to help us complete this venture. Thank-you. Check out the animals in our care at:

more-normal intervals. In extreme circumstances, a gynecologic urologist can advise you if a battery-operated device attached to the bladder is something you could consider. It stops frequent, unwanted and unneeded bladder contractions. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain what complex carbohydrates are. I see this term on all diet instructions. I don’t have a clear idea of what it means. What makes them complex, and how are they healthier than other carbs? -- W.L. ANSWER: Carbohydrates are starches and sugars. Fruits, vegetables and most grains (flours) are carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are long chains of carbon molecules. Starches are complex carbohydrates. Sugars are simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates don’t raise blood sugar as quickly as do simple carbohydrates, so they don’t provoke a great demand for insulin. That’s what makes them more desirable.

Looking to revive the can competition It’s heartening to hear that the City of Estevan has mustered up the fortitude to once again issue a challenge for the coveted Golden Garbage Can, that symbol of community cleanliness that is known far and wide, or at least in Weyburn and Estevan. The clean-up duel is on again. Which city will be declared the neatest and cleanest at a given point in time this spring? We understand completely that Estevan is totally dominant in terms of economic drive and community participation. In fact, without senior government intervention, the scales would have been tipped even more in our favour. But this competition isn’t about business and the general economy, it’s about loveliness. Heading into the contest, Weyburn has held the edge in previous years with its natural advantage of having a usually serene river flowing through its centre that can be used to emphasize all that is good about it. Weyburn is traditionally a finalist in the Communities in Bloom, provincial/national competition, so Estevan had some catching up to do in those departments. But now local Pure Energy members and other community advocates feel confident that the Energy City is back in the ball game.

Important questions on horizon

The competition isn’t just about flowers anyway. It’s about overall cleanliness, neatness, pride in property, both public and private. The fact that Estevan has automated garbage pickup, eliminating the spilled bags and littering aspect of that job while Weyburn hasn’t introduced that service yet, should weigh in our favour. For the past half dozen years, local volunteers and City employees have been very, very busy introducing floral arrangements and trees along our streets and boulevards, revitalizing our green spaces, sprucing up our public parks and sweeping our streets. All this has been done in the midst of unprecedented growth and a frantic construction schedule that lends its own challenges. Making new subdivisions appear pristine while attempting to install water lines and curbs is a big task. Civic officials tell us that 2003 was the last time the Golden Garbage Can was awarded, ending a long time friendly competition between our two cities. It seemed there just wasn’t any more spirit behind the contest. In fact, the event had been reduced to the point that a lame little plaque was being passed along to the winning community rather than the brilliant golden embossed garbage can. It seemed the can was too clumsy to carry from one city to the other. Well, the can has been unearthed in an Estevan storage room. We don’t know where the plaque is, although we can guess it’s in somebody’s desk drawer in Weyburn’s City Hall. We’re just happy to see that Estevan’s civic administration is willing to once again shout out to their neighbour to the north that “the game is on, we want the can!”

where profit margins are such that they could pay far more for the seed than can the current human food sector. Of course growing such crops will mean dealing with identity preservation protocols, contract sales, and similar issues, but those are already rather common place in farming, again especially in dealing with canola. While such prospects do hold out the promise of greater returns, they One of the things agricultural producers have been hearing for quite some time is how what they produce will one day garner higher prices, not for food do fundamentally change the purpose of growing crops. We have already seen a backlash of sorts over grains and oilseeds being for humans or livestock as has always been the market for farm produce, but diverted to the biofuels sector by those fearing it will only lead to higher for the chemical components within the crops. There are two questions that come to mind when contemplating that prices which many in poor countries already can’t pay. If farming for crop components catches on, those concerns will be possibility. Lost pet leaves heartbreak behind DEAR PAW ’ S CORNER: My dog Coco, a small miniature Schnauzer, has been lost for six months now. I have tried to contact many people, such as the police, animal control and my vet, and placed posters around the neighborhood; however, nothing. It’s very painful, the idea of not knowing how he is doing. I don’t know if he is alive, or if I’ll ever see him again. So what can I do about this situation? - Veronica,

Hightstown, N.J. DEAR VERONICA: I’m sorry to hear that your dog is still lost, Veronica. It’s heartbreaking when a pet disappears. You’ve tried contacting all the local resources possible, which is the recommended first step. You might want to check back in to animal control, as well as call around to shelters in a wider area to see if they have taken in a dog fitting Coco’s description. If you have a picture, even better. Several lost pet Web sites can be found online, as well. Pets911.com has a section where lost pets can be reported and found, or stray pets can be listed. Petfinder. com, perhaps the best-known

service, also has a large lostpets database. A totally free service is www.missingpet.net, homepage of the Missing Pet Network, which is maintained by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. When listing your pet, be sure to include his age, breed, coloring, size and weight, what type of collar and tag he’s wearing, where he was last seen and any personality traits. If he answers to a certain call or likes a particular treat, mention that. Do not mention a reward in the listing. Consider also getting an e-mail account from one of the free e-mail services online and using it as your main contact. Also, be on your guard against online theft. If contacted about Coco, don’t give out credit card or Social Security numbers, your home address or other secure information. Send your pet questions to Sam Mazzotta at ask@ pawscorner.com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Find more pet resources at www. Spring Onions Flavor the Season There’s nothing like the intense flavor (or the smell) of an onion. Wild onions were among the first foods that mankind gathered and ate and are one of the first signs of spring. Onions are in the allium family, along with garlic and shallots. Spring onions are one of my favorite varieties. Spring onions are also called green onions, young onions, pencil onion and scallions. Scallions aren’t as fully ripened as a green onion and should not have a bulb. Spring onions are the milder, first stage of a mature onion. If left in the ground to grow, they’ll form into an onion bulb. Larger, older, spring onions may have limp or faded stalks and a stronger flavor than the smaller ones. Spring onions should be small and thin, with a firm base at the root tip and crisp, bright green leaves. Select spring onions that are not fully developed with a white bulb end and long green stalks. The flavor of the leaves is milder than the root end. Spring onions will keep for 5 to 7 days when wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigerator. Spring onions are a

great source of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and f i b e r. T h e y also contain a substance that prevents the formation of blood clots. Eating onions also helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. To p r e p a r e s p r i n g onions, cut off the roots and peel away the outer layer to remove any lingering dirt. Next, rinse the leaves, spreading them gently with your fingers to get at the dirt in the crevices. Both parts are edible. Although the white bulb is most often listed as part of recipes, the green leaves should also be incorporated in the recipes and as a garnish. You also can use the

leaves to add a wonderful burst of green color, to tie up appetizers into a package or to use as a frilly, edible garnish. To curl the ends, cut off the roots and all but about 3 inches of the green tops. Slice the tops lengthwise down from the green end into the white section. Put the leaves in cold water and chill for several hours to curl them. While spring onions are best served raw, they’re also delicious grilled or sautéed. Spring onions should be added during the final stages of a recipe for maximum flavor. Ty Cobb Autograph Q: I have a booklet that was written by Ty Cobb and produced by Hillerich Publishing, “The Science of Batting.” He was a neighbor of mine when I lived in California, and he signed this item to me personally, “To Joyce, my friend, Ty Cobb 8/26/49.” Would you have any idea of its value? -- Joyce, Sun City West, Ariz. A: It is probably worth more than you might think. I checked Sports Authority, an Internet clearinghouse for memorabilia, and discovered that a signed baseball by Cobb generally sells in the $5,000 to $8000 range; a photo, $3,500 to $5,000; and a clipped signature, $1,000 to $1,500. You can contact this business at its e-mail address, email@ keymancollectibles.com. At History for Sale, another Internet business specializing in autographs, a signed letter by Cobb was listed for $5,999. You can contact the firm at 1-800425-5379. Judging by these amounts, your booklet could be worth more than $5,000. The way to nail down a value is to consult with an

A: In recent weeks, I have received at least six or seven letters about beer cans, trays and related brewery memorabilia. For Norm and the others who have contacted me, let me introduce Allan Aprea -- a collector, appraiser and expert in U.S. and Canadian brewery items, including cans, trays, signs and lights.

He can help you. His contact information is 24 Chestnut Road, Chatham, NJ 07928, and ajaprea@verizon.net. *** Q: I recently purchased two bronze statues at an antiques shop. I would like to know who sculpted them, when and values. -- Helen, Southberry, Conn. THE TRADER, FRIDAY, APRIL 9 , 2010

H O L LY W O O D . . . Selleck fans are happy to learn that “Tall Tom is about to make a deal to star in an untitled drama pilot. By the time you read this it should be a “done deal. We don’t know too much about it for now. His last outing in “Las Vegas was a flop. More on this as we find out. Meanwhile Tall Tom tends his avocados and rides his horses. Aside to Doreen M. of Austin, Tx. Yes. I saw Lana Wood (Natalie’s sister) on the tube where she talked about learning more details about Natalie’s death. Personally I feel she should close the book. Stirring up a lot of unpleasantness won’t do any good. AND to all you tourists looking for celebs: A place to find them outside of Beverly Hills is The Grove at Farmer’s Market in Hollywood. Food stalls, stores, eateries, etc. Stars are sure to be there. So, good luck. You might even find yourself seated next to a “big name at one of the outside dining spots. Jennifer Lopez is “in talks to star in a remake

of the romantic comedy “Overboard. The 1987 version starred Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Looks like JLo is making a big push back into pictures. Her last film was “El Cantante back in 2006. However, weep not for the lovely Lopez. She has a good life off screen, and big successes on. I am climbing on my “soapbox to have my say about Tiger. What

the heck? Why all the commotion? He didn’t kill anybody, or rob a bank, or do anything criminal. All he did was stray a bit sexually. How many other men AND women haven’t? So. Let’s get on with golf. Aside to Miriam K. of Kansas City, Kan. You ask if I knew Joan Blondell personally. Yes, I did. When I first moved out here from New Orleans

she lived next door. So, I came to know her, her children, her doggies and about her past career. Also that she was a loving, giving, talented, temperamental person. I was privileged to be a part of her life. Many questions about Chris Pine. And I am lucky enough to be a close friend of his agent and thus able to answer your questions. The main one: Does he have a steady female liaison? The answer is NO. Not at the moment. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. Mel Brooks is one of the most beloved characters in Filmtown. So most everybody who could make it turned out when he got his star on the Walk of Fame. He is a bit older and a bit more time-

worn, but that BIG SMILE is still there -- and so is his sense of humor. BITS ‘N’ PIECES: That California couple who bragged on “Dr Phil about making $100,000 selling shoplifted toys on Ebay has been sentenced to Federal prison. Be careful what you snatch and sell! ... Sissy Spacek could be coming back on the Tube. She’s got a pilot “out there that may be sold by now. ... Paris?? Lindsay!! Britney! ALL’S QUIET at the moment. ... Believe it or not: Back in the old days, Vivien Leigh received $15,000 for her role as Scarlett O’Hara, which was back then considered an astronomical price!

Prep Kids Early for Making College Picks While millions of enthusiastic basketball fans recently made their “March Madness” college team picks, thousands of high-school seniors with acceptance letters in hand began the process of whittling down their final pick for the college they’ll attend this fall. For them, it is another kind of ballgame. With a May deadline fast approaching at most colleges, these students are deliberating, crunching numbers, weighing the pros and cons, and some are even revisiting campuses in these final days. Big questions loom: Do I want to live near or far away from home? Sunshine or snow? Big city or small town?

Will the educational and social environment be a good fit for me?And ultimately, how much will it cost? A good college decision is made when preparation and thought are done well in advance of this major life step, according to Dr. Linda Parkyn, professor of Spanish at North Park University in Chicago, who assists parents of young teens in her “College 101” seminars. She believes parents can help students as young as middle-school-age to see a larger purpose in life and to view their education as preparation for their goals. Here are practical tips to help your teens begin thinking about post-high-school and college planning: 1. Expose your children

to a variety of people engaged in different types of careers, and talk actively about career choices and vocations. Tell them what you like about your job and explain what is challenging and rewarding. 2. Seek volunteer opportunities to connect each of your children’s dispositions, likes and dislikes with potential career options. Discover interests and service projects together, and look for exemplars who can model for your kids. 3. Present college not simply as a job-training site, but as another opportunity to gain tools, flesh out interests, try new things, meet interesting

THE TRADER, FRIDAY, APRIL 9 , 2010

What’s the Matter With Kansas? A few years ago, the top prospect in professional baseball quit the game. His heart just wasn’t in it, but more importantly, his mind wasn’t either. And as any baseball player can tell you, 90 percent of the game is half mental. I’m not going to belabor the metaphors and analogies here. That pitcher was (and remains) the Kansas City Royals’ Zack Greinke, the 2009 Cy Young Award winner and one of the top pitchers I’ve ever had the pleasure to see work off the mound. This may sound blasphemous, but Greinke reminded me a bit of Greg Maddux last year in that he had exceptional command and control, but unlike Maddux, Greinke posesses a devastating fastball. Be that as it may, Greinke had to take a leave of absence because he wasn’t sure if he liked baseball and, one presumes, he wasn’t happy or sure about a lot of other things in his life. One only needs to read Andre Agassi’s compulsively readable memoir to understand this mindset.Today’s professional athletes begin practicing at an almost abnormal age and are pressed by domineering factors -- usually family -in order to reach the upper echelons of the game. That can lead to issues. By all accounts, Greinke is uber-competitive, and winning all the time (or, in the case of the Royals, knowing you should have won the game) can lead some athletes to question the worth of winning in view of its cost. Take Tiger Woods, for example (and if you’re 89 percent of the hot blondes in the country, you may have already). Winning The Masters and the other majors out there isn’t enough of a high after a while. Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain and Gene Simmons will tell you the same thing. It’s lucky for baseball and those who love this uniquely American game (no matter what the Revolutionary War-losing Brits say) that Greinke, with the aid of a few pharmaceuticals, got his head straight. The story of how he did so is a testament to the Royal organization, which, in the Kauffman tradition, supported him through his crisis all the way. A few weeks ago, Danny Duffy, one of the top Royals

prospects, quit the game. Duffy, 21, was ranked by Baseball America as the eighth-best prospect in the organization after going 19-10 with a 2.49 ERA in 52 games last season. So why is Danny done? Maybe he didn’t like the idea of toiling in Missouri baseball mediocrity. Maybe he didn’t want to spend his summer in AA Arkansas. Whatever the matter may be, it’s something the cash-strapped Kansas City Royals better figure out soon. Prospects may spoil on the vine, but they certainly don’t grow on trees. “The Devil’s Rooming House: The True Story of America’s Deadliest Female Serial Killer” by M. William Phelps (Lyons Press, $24.95) Reviewed by Larry Cox Lizzie Bordon became famous for probably murdering her stepmother and father in turn-of-the-century New England. But a lesserk n o w n c o n t e m p o r a r y, Amy Archer-Gilligan, is much more interesting. Amy dispatched two husbands and possibly as many as 66 others in a fashion reminiscent of “Arsenic and Old Lace,” a Broadway play that was loosely based on her case. In his new book, M.

William Phelps, tells the shocking, true story of this Victorian murderess in fascinating detail. In 1901, Amy and her first husband, James Archer, opened a nursing home for the elderly in Newington, Conn. It was one of the first facilities of its kind and was so successful that a second one was opened in nearby Windsor six years later. Mr. Archer died shortly after the move, and Amy soon found a second husband, Michael Gilligan. Even though he was the picture of health, he, too, died, but not before he had drawn up a will leaving his new wife all of his estate. The Archer Home for Elderly and Chronic Invalids became a rooming house of death. Patients who moved into

the home paid $1,000 for what they were told would be lifetime care. The frequent deaths occurred whenever Amy received an application and needed a vacant room. To get that vacancy, she relied on arsenic. When a newspaper writer became suspicious, authorities were notified, and Amy was arrested. So began one of the most sensational investigations and trials of that era. Phelps -- whom Radio America calls “the nation’s leading authority on the mind of the female murderer” -- conducted extensive interviews and sifted through official trial transcripts and newspaper files to bring readers faceto-face with the matron of what the media of the day billed as a “murder factory.” (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
