Hwy. 64 opens, rafting season starts April 16 marks the re-opening of Highway 64 through some of the most scenic areas of Tennessee. And the next day, Saturday, April 17, is the beginning of the 2010 Rafting Season for Ocoee Adventure Center, one of the most unique rafting experiences on the Ocoee. “We are thrilled that the road is finally re-opened, but that’s not the only reason we’re predicting a betterthan-ever season, said Larry Mashburn, president of Ocoee Adventure Center. “After a long and cold winter, many people are excited to get outside and experience the outdoors with their friends and families. The Ocoee is a dam-controlled river with a consistent water flow so our guests are always guaranteed great water levels. And each trip is a unique adventure experi-

encing Class III and IV whitewater on the Ocoee. Ocoee Adventure Center offers guided raft trips along the upper and middle sections of the Ocoee River. Each is about five miles long and takes approximately three-and-a-half to four hours. “We believe in having fun on the water and taking our time with guests who raft with us, Mashburn said. “The majority of our guides have been with us for several years and know every rapid, eddy and wave in the river, so the trips are exhilarating adventures. Highway 64 was closed last November following a massive rockslide. As a result eastbound traffic from Cleveland and Chattanooga was See Rafting, page 2B

Columnist When I was a kid growing up in the 1940s and 50s, I usually got to go to the movies about once a week. That was usually on the weekend. There was almost always a Western together with some other feature, but one of my favorite parts was the serial movies. In those days Republic Pictures and Columbia Pictures were the most prolific producers. I learned to love a cliffhanger, and I still do. Now put that together with an intriguing question, “Whatever happened to Israel’s Ark of the Covenant? Steven Spielberg asked that question and came up with an interesting solution. (Incidentally, the Church of Ethiopia claims they have the original Ark, but most serious students of the subject think that it’s more likely a copy.) Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) is, to quote a fellow teacher of mine, “pure entertainment. Spielberg pays tribute to the serial movies of my childhood in this

ON NASCAR

Kasey Kahne – He’s dreamy By: Cathy Elliott Columnist Each January, the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) holds its annual convention and awards banquet in Charlotte. It’s a fun event, and it’s always nice to see the sometimes underappreciated motorsports media corps rewarded for its hard work. The portion of the program attendees either look forward to most or absolutely dread, depending on how photogenic they are, is a slide show of media members going about their business during the previous season, punctuated by pithy comments from a current NMPA executive board member. On one particularly memorable evening a few years back, the slide show included several totally random shots of Kasey Kahne, to which Mike Hembree, current NASCAR editor for SPEEDTV.com and that year’s purveyor of pith, would simply deadpan: “Kasey Kahne. He’s dreamy. About the third time this happened, the audience joined in with the refrain,

very entertaining piece of work. Doctor “Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), a very adventurous archaeologist, is sent by the US government to retrieve the Ark of the covenant before it falls into the hands of the Nazis. You always need a good villain for your story and the Nazis are perfect for this one. Anyhow, Indiana finds himself in Egypt along with a former girlfriend Marion (Karen Allen) and a good friend, Sallah (John Rhys-Davies). Indiana succeeds in recovering the Ark from its burial place, but is betrayed by his arch enemy Bellog (Paul Freeman). Bellog of course turns the Ark over to the Germans but Indy is able to retrieve it after a running fight with a truck driver and other henchmen. This is one of the best dramatic uses of Yakima Canutt’s famous stagecoach drag. Indiana and his friends managed to get the Ark on board a ship, but the ship is intercepted by a German submarine. The Germans take the Ark to an island in the Mediterranean and Indiana follows threatening to blow it up unless they turn it over to him. Bellog

and I have to confess I haven’t seen a photo of Kahne since without “He’s dreamy, providing the background music in my head. Silly, yes, but it now seems that others share this opinion with the NMPA. There’s a slight chance you missed this snippet of recent NASCAR news, because I have it on pretty good authority that some people actually do live in caves, hide under rocks and vacation on the moon. So for all two or three of you, here’s the deal. Hendrick Motorsports announced on April 14 that Richard Petty Motorsports driver Kasey “He’s Dreamy Kahne would be taking over the No. 5 Chevy, currently piloted by Mark Martin, beginning with the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. The contract was described as being “longterm, which after further investigation turns out to mean something like “five years and then we’ll see. Speculation has run rampant since the announcement, as even the most mathematically challenged among us figured out fairly quickly, that something significant lies between the current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season and the 2010 season; namely, that would be the year 2011. There are so many theories flying around that all we seem to be missing is a grassy knoll.

What will KK do next year? Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. both have contracts extending to and through the end of 2011, and call me crazy, but I’m guessing that Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson’s deals with HMS extend into the afterlife. So why, fans are wondering, would Hendrick Motorsports sign a contract with such a talented and popular driver without having a car for him to drive? Just think of it like shoe shopping. Man, woman, child or horse, there are certain styles of footwear that fit us better than others. So naturally, whether it is Cole Haan or Converse, Ferragamo or a farrier’s iron, we naturally gravitate toward those same choices over and over again. They suit us. Hendrick Motorsports is like that. Their drivers are unique individuals with their own personalities and driving styles, but they have some similarities, too. They look, dress, speak and conduct themselves in an appropriate way. They are not only role models; they are NASCAR poster boys. They convey a positive image for the sport. Kasey Kahne – who is dreamy, in case you didn’t know -- is a brand that fits well in this closet. He definitely looks the part; still young with a long racing future ahead of him, his good looks have been the subject of many

makes a bargain with him because he’s sure Indiana wants to know what’s in the Ark as much as he or anyone else. The scene where the Ark is opened is one of the most dynamic special effects scenes on film to date. The flesh seems to melt from everyone around except Indiana and Marion who avoid looking at the phenomenon. In the closing scene we see the Ark encased in a crate being stored in a humongous warehouse with several other similar artifacts. Meanwhile Indiana is proclaiming that these fools don’t know what they’ve got. Today we give a reel memories salute to Steven Spielberg and the cast and crew of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). an amusing TV commercial. Anyone who has watched the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Awards Banquet has probably noticed he isn’t all that comfortable with formal speech-making, but he’s a generally cordial person with a calm manner of speaking and a low-key personality not much given to controversy. And lest we forget, he’s a good driver. He was the Cup Series' Raybestos Rookie of the Year in 2005, and made the Chase for the Sprint Cup field in 2006 -when he won six races -- and in 2009. No one can say with any degree of certainly at this point exactly what car Kahne will be driving in 2011, but why get so worked up about it? There are plenty of options, with Stewart-Haas Racing being the most commonly mentioned for now. What we do know is that Rick Hendrick has said he will be competing in the Cup Series full time in 2011. And we know the car will be a fast, competitive one. How can we be so sure? That’s easy; the legendary Rick Hendrick agrees that Kasey Kahne is, in fact, dreamy, and if you want to second-guess THAT guy, you’re entirely on your own. Because Mr. Hendrick understands full well this time honored purchasing principle: If the shoe fits, buy it. Or at least sign it to a long-term contract.

Rafting: t $POUJOVFE GSPN QBHF # diverted north through Tellico and around the gorge to Ducktown. The Tennessee Department of Transportation has taken the opportunity to widen the road at 15-mile-perhour curve midway between the put-in and the take-out so that the bus and vehicle passage there is now extremely safe, Mashburn said. The roadway repairs delayed the opening of the rafting season by nearly six weeks. Fortunately, the rockslide did not damage any of the dams or the river’s infrastructure. The rockslide came just feet of hitting the Ocoee #2 dam which is the “middle put-in where rafters put in to begin their adventure. The Ocoee River is located in Southeast Tennessee and was the site for the whitewater slalom events in the 1996 Centennial Olympics. It is the only Olympic River in America that people can experience the exact same conditions, rapids, and water levels that the Olympic competitors experienced. The Ocoee is a Class III and IV river and is characterized by large rapids with names such as Humongous, Godzilla, Table Saw, and Grumpys. Ocoee Adventure Center is locally owned and operated and has been operating on the Ocoee since 1997. Rafting trips run on both the Upper Olympic section and the Middle section. Ocoee Adventure Center is a one-stop-shop not only offering whitewater rafting adventures but also offers guided mountain biking, whitewater kayak instruction, and flat water kayaking trips in the Cherokee National Forest as well. Ocoee River Rafting is open for rafting on the weekends only in the months of April and May. Beginning May 27, rafting is open five days a week (Thursday through Monday) through Labor Day and then weekends only until the end of October. Please call the reservation office at 1-888-732-8622 for trip times and availability or book online at www. ocoeeadventurecenter.com.

Restaurant benefits scholarship campaign

Brother’s Restaurant, with locations in Young Harris, Ga., and Murphy, N.C., will host a Community Night for the Young Harris College Local Scholarship Campaign on Thursday, May 6. Brother’s Restaurant will donate 15 percent of their sales between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. to help benefit scholarships for local students attending the College. Young Harris College President Cathy Cox will greet attendees at the Young Harris Brother’s Restaurant location. Members of the Young Harris College Board of Associates will also volunteer at the restaurants throughout the evening. “Members of the College community and local citizens will have an easy opportunity to support the 2009-2010 Local Scholarship Campaign simply by eating dinner

and bringing their families and friends,” said Local Scholarship Campaign Chair Rick Davenport, of Rick’s Rental in Blairsville, Ga. “We want to encourage everyone to splurge a little by ordering dessert too!”

About the Local Scholarship Campaign

More than 150 students from the surrounding counties of Towns, Union, Fannin and Gilmer in Georgia and Cherokee and Clay in North Carolina are currently enrolled at Young Harris College. Reflecting a commitment by the College and the local community to these students, the Local Scholarship Campaign was established to raise funds to support the educational goals of local students at Young Harris College.

The Young Harris College Board of Associates, a 29-member group of local business and civic leaders who serve as ambassadors for the College as well as a sounding board for the community, leads this effort. Each fall the Board of Associates launches the annual Local Scholarship Campaign in an effort to assist in providing aid to the students coming to Young Harris College from these six communities. Students like Julie Kelley, a sophomore allied health major from Union County, benefit from the scholarship money raised. “By receiving support from the Local Scholarship program, I have been able to stay close to home to attend college. I was not ready to move somewhere else for college, and I don’t think I would have achieved as

much if I had moved away to a bigger school. This is home for me,” she said. Sophomore Kendric McDonald, an education major from Cherokee County, N.C., said, “My scholarship has meant a lot to both me and my parents. When deciding which college to attend, cost was a determining factor. “Thanks to the Local Scholarship Campaign, I was able to attend the college of my choice and play baseball at Young Harris College.”

‘Run for Your Wife’ now in rehearsal

The Blue Ridge Community Theater is in rehearsal for the next Main Stage play, Run for Your Wife, by Ray Cooney. John Smith is your ordinary London cab driver. He owns his own car, sets his own hours, is hard working, punctual and lives a very ordinary life...with the exception of his two wives, Mary and Barbara. One night John stops an old women from getting mugged and gets knocked unconscious. After being checked over at the hospital, he is taken to his home with Mary by a local police officer, Detective Troughton. However, that

After realizing his predicament, John tries to get home to Barbara while keeping both his first wife Mary and Detective Troughton from finding out about his second wife. Enlisting the help of his upstairs slacker neighbor, Stanley Gardener, John heaps one lie upon another to get back to Barbara and back on his very precise schedule. All appears to be well until another police officer, Detective Porterhouse, arrives from a neighboring district investigating the case of two cab drivers

named John Smith, both mugged on the same night but having different addresses. Quick thinking Stanley exaggerates several more lies to create a new John Smith for Detective Porterhouse, while keeping the truth from Mary. As the lies pile up and craziness ensues, Stanley and John try valiantly to keep the nosy detectives busy, John's suspicious wives from running into each other, their sex lives straight and all of their stories together. Run for Your Wife is a fast paced, slap-stick, laugh a minute romp that leaves you in stitches and begging for

Mozilla Firefox makes a better web By: Bryan Hughes Bryan@wncSentinel.net Sometimes it's not so much about the website you are looking for, but rather the vehicle you used to get there. A great majority of people are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer to browse the web, and that's fine - if you enjoy having your pages displayed wrong, being vulnerable to viruses, and having your pages crash on an hourly basis. In walks Mozilla Firefox to answer the call of sub-par web browsing. Firefox is a sleek, easy to use, highly secure, and ultra-fast web browser. The speed alone is a reason to drop Microsoft "Internet Exploder" and start using Firefox. As their website puts it - "It's like trading a minivan for a sports car." Pages load faster, they display properly and the entire program just works - without needless interruption. The browser is also incredibly customizable, you can theme it to look however you so desire, and

you have full flexibility to change the layout of your buttons and tabs. Bookmarks are easily imported from your old browsers, and you can break your bookmarks down into categories for a more efficient web experience.

Firefox is also highly secure, with every new upgrade of Firefox you can be sure that the developers have implemented the latest fixes for any security vulnerabilities. In

fact, if you accidentally browse to a website known to contain viruses and security threats, the page will be blocked entirely. The browser itself is infinitely expandable. The program was written in "Open Source" code meaning that everyone has access to the original "blueprints" behind the program. This has allowed for independent programmers to create a myriad of applications that integrate seamlessly with Firefox. Now you can get your Twitter updates, Facebook updates, FTP downloads, and even your news and stock feeds right on the sidebar of your browser, in real time. Something you won't find with Internet Explorer. There are thousands of reasons why you should be using Mozilla Firefox but the best way to find out is to use it yourself. So don't just take my word for it, head over to firefox.com and download your free copy of the latest software.

Beware This Sweet Shrub

By: Carol Chandler Plant Rescue Team Writer It has been a beautiful spring. My walks between the woods and my gardens are always filled with new delights as native plants emerge and bloom. Many I am still learning about. Besides being beautiful even to the tiniest, most plants have some sustaining benefit to life in its environment. Most of my cultivated plants are heirloom or native and have benefit to ourselves and some form of wildlife. They include blueberries, apples, cherries, oaks, and hickories. I noticed this plant on our property several years ago. Now I see it spread each year to a new location. Although indigenous to the southeast, it is more plentiful in the southern Appalachians. It is considered endangered in many locations. Its scent is enticing; its maroon to brown blooms are lovely; but this native plant’s fall seeds, held neatly in sacks, are poisonous. Calycanthus floridus L. is commonly known as Sweet shrub, Strawberry bush, Sweet Betsy and Carolina allspice. It is quite beautiful. But, I have not yet learned of any significant benefit to sustaining wildlife. I need to study this more. The Cherokees
