Think of a four-letter word. Gotcha! No doubt your mind just conjured up something ugly that would have gotten your mouth washed out with soap in by-gone days. My parents weren’t prudes, but damn and hell were the two worst words I ever heard them say. Those rare utterances always surprised me. After we married, Buddy became a walking lexicon for his naive wife. Being a Mississippi country boy who went straight from high school to the Navy, he was well acquainted with what I call gutter language. Some unfamiliar words he interpreted had more than four letters. Buddy taught me that a “broad was a non-complimentary term for a worldly woman and that a bitch was not only a mother dog but an uncomplimentary description of a nagging female. It didn’t take long for me to fondly attach

Nothing about me is simple. I have had metastatic adenocarcinoma, histoplasmosis, renal azotemia, and an acute myocardial infarction. How could the four-lettered crud be so bad? Memory fades at my age, but I do believe this crud was the most complicated, congestive, cotton-picking cold in my lifetime. While lightening may not strike twice in the same place, the crud does. We had hardly changed the bed sheets when Buddy relapsed. Round two of crud for him. Buddy and I are polar opposites in many ways so it should not be too sur-

prising that we handle illnesses differently. I prefer to suffer in silence. Should an unexpected sickness require that I disturb my doctor’s golf game you can be sure I am nigh unto death. Buddy, on the other hand, has his doctor’s cell phone number on speed dial. My philosophy regarding something like the common crud is that “this too shall pass. Buddy’s isn’t known for such optimism. When he picked up the phone last week, I quickly intercepted his call and sent the hearse back. As much as I dislike throwing money away on a cold that would likely cure itself, a doctor’s visit had to be cheaper than a funeral. It is always possible that this crud could be masquerading as the Swine flu. The smiling doctor, who knows Buddy quite well, obliged him with a double-barreled shot, a prescription for antibiotics and a steep bill for sympathetic services. CRUD! REEL MEMORIES #121

Is there something better than man?

By: William V. Reynolds Columnist

Have you ever wondered if there is something somewhere in the universe better than man? Although many religions view man as the ultimate creation, this is probably a fair question. In any case, it’s the question addressed by this classic movie made in 1968. The movie is loosely based on Pierre Boule’s novel with an original screenplay written by Rod Serling who is perhaps best known for his TV series The Twilight Zone. Twentieth Century Fox departed from Serling’s screenplay because of the expense of constructing futuristic sets. In spite of this, the film retains some of the qualities of the original story. The chief one being the satire of modern civilization. Four astronauts crash land on a planet after hibernating for about 2000 years. Upon landing, they discover that the woman among them is dead because of a leak in her hibernation chamber. Realizing that they have landed on water instead of land,

myself to the term “lady.â€? Toilet talk isn’t humorous to me either. When I was a teen-ager, my friends would tease me because I blushed at the slightest suggestion of anything lewd. Half a century later I still blush. Some things were just meant to be private. Start talking about constipation or gassy exuberances and likely you’ll lose your audience. What occurs in the bathroom ought to stay within the confines of the necessary room built for that purpose. I must now confess that a new fourletter word has entered my vocabularyâ€Śâ€œCrud.â€? It isn’t in the dictionary, but I can define it easily because Buddy and I have both had this convoluted cold in the past few days. He got the crud first. For days I endured his sneezing, coughing, laryngitis, dirty tissues and ill mood. Just as he was getting over the worst of his crud, my head started buzzing. Nasal passages dripped like a broken faucet and my voice sounded like a man’s.

the living astronauts escape their space ship in the nick of time as it sinks to the bottom of the lake. Wandering over the planet they seek signs of life. To their amazement they find a society that is what they call an upside down civilization. The apes rule and man is a primitive animal unable to communicate verbally. During their initial encounter with the humans, they are attacked by the apes who are looking for slaves and specimens for scientific experiment, much as modern humans use lower primates in today’s society. George Taylor (Charlton Heston), who has been captured along with one of his fellow astronauts, is imprisoned but is unable to communicate due to an injury to his throat. He is finally able to communicate with chimpanzees Zira (Kim Hunter) and her fiancÊ Cornelius (Roddy Macdowell). But their boss Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans) demands a hearing to find out why Taylor can talk. During the hearing, Zira and Cornelius are accused of heresy. Later Dr. Zaius meets with Taylor and tells him that he will be lobotomized as well as emasculated because he cannot be allowed to

continue to exist. Zira and Cornelius escape with Taylor and a mate he has chosen from among the humans, Nova (Linda Harrison), to the forbidden zone where evidence of human civilization exists. Dr. Zaius pursues them at the head of a troop of gorillas. In the fracas that follows, Taylor manages to take Dr. Zaius captive where he negotiates his release and the use of a horse so that he and Nova can escape. As Taylor makes good his escape, Dr. Zaius destroys the evidence of the human civilization. Meanwhile, Taylor finds evidence that the human race has destroyed the civilization that he knew. The film won one Academy award for best makeup and was included in the American film Institute’s list of 100 years . . . 100 thrills. Today we give a reel memories salute to Planet of the Apes (1968). William V. Reynolds is the author of “Murder in the Okefenokee available at McCaysville Public Market and Pat’s Country Kitchen in McCaysville; Parris Pharmacy, The Book Nook and Ingles in Blue Ridge; Book Nook in Blairsville; and Phillips and Lloyd in Hayesville.

A dozen or so members of an Organic Gardening class concluded their study with a field trip to the Herb Crib on Trackrock Church road Tuesday, March 16, 2010. Taught by Jennifer Cordier, local organic gardener and wild plant preservationist, the course was offered by the Institute of Continuing Learning (ICL) at Young Harris College. Herb Crib and also a certified organic gardener, showed the group around. Her six acre plot includes a wildlife and wild plant area, trout pond fed from local springs, and her herb garden. She grows and sells culinary and medicinal herbs at the site from May to October. Karen explained the difficult process of becoming a certified organic gardener, including a lengthy application process, visits by inspectors, and paying a heavy fee. She learned her first skills in the field from her father in Germany. Her farm has been in operation for 14 years.

She gets most of the natural material for fertifilizing from nearby Trackrock Stables. “With some 50 horses there, she said, “I always have more composing material than I need.. Karen and her husband also have a greenhouse for starting seed and growing exotic plants. Though the beds were still dormant under the chill late winter weather, in growing season they are prolific. Herb s include golden oregano, echinea, lavender, tinsey, red sage, anise, blue, pink and white hyssop. Also in the garden are lung wort, thyme, camomile and

majoram, among others. The organic gardening class met on Tuesdays for eight weeks. Members had the opportunity to test the Ph level in soil samples they brought in from their home plots. They also tested for potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus levels and learned some organic techniques for improving the soil. Earlier in the class the group made another field trip to the Cordier farm on Ivy Log road where Jennifer showed by example the techniques of growing plants without chemical or artificial means.

New Georgia museum announced

Frances Brooks, Secretary of the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum of Carrollton, GA, was the featured speaker for the March 22 meeting of the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild. Plans for the quilt museum began in 1998, with funds being raised by the Georgia Quilt Council, a statewide organization. The Council was later awarded a block grant as part of the "Highway 27 Initiative" for the establishment of the museum. The former Carroll County Courthouse is undergoing renovation to house the new facility, which will open in the Spring of 2011. Similar to the famous quilt museum in Paducah, Kentucky, the Georgia museum will have extensive exhibits, shows, classes, a shop, historical items, and a reference library. The seventy-six quilt organizations in Georgia have been invited to send a quilt for display to represent their group. Dolores Knight, long-time member of the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild, made the king-sized "Double Wedding Ring Star" quilt

Show features young talent, veteran director Agatha Christie mystery opens April 9

Young actors It is always exciting for the Licklog Players to welcome new young talent to the stage. In Agatha Christie’s, The Mousetrap, audiences will get to enjoy Jacob Harris and Kate Scroggs. They play Giles and Molly Ralston, young owners of a country manor guest house. They also have secrets that make them possible suspects in a murder. Jacob graduated from Murphy High School. While there, he became interested in theater through his work with Laurel Adams. He took part in many plays that Adams did with the high schoolers. He put aside theater, other than helping with sets there, while he received a BFA degree from Auburn University. Now that he has graduated and is waiting to start work on an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Ashville, he is taking the opportunity to get back on the stage. He is having fun getting to know his character and working in a real “who done it.” Kate Scroggs isn’t actually new to the Licklog Players. She started with the junior program there, Peacock Pride, and was in some shows. She went away to college attending Appalachian State where she got a Master’s in Public Policy with an emphasis on Non-profits. Then she joined the Air Force and is still an officer in the Reserves. She missed theater, and as she is pursuing further studies and working, she is squeezing in time for the play. She is a talented actress, and Licklog is glad she came “home.”

Veteran director and artist Edie Kleinpeter and her daughter, Karin have worked together on many shows for the Licklog Players. Agatha Christie’s, The Mousetrap, is the latest collaboration at the Peacock Playhouse. The show will run April 9-11 and 16-18. Edie is a director highly respected for her tightly knit plays. Karin is a talented artist who creates muchadmired sets. The Mousetrap is a murder mystery with many twists and turns. It is set in an old English country guest house. Karin has turned the stage into a comfortable, slightly worn, country manor. Edie and Karin will bring many things from home to give the set authenticity such as an Oriental rug, some antiques. Karin has a Master’s in Fine Arts and currently supervises student art teachers for North Georgia State. She is not only a creative artist, but is equally at home with a hammer and a miter saw. With a little help she not only designs the sets but builds them. Edie has her own fan base of regular theatergoers who know her final product will be well put together. The Mousetrap is a classic “who done it” with everyone a possible suspect. One audience member each night will win two free tickets to the next show if they guess the killer and have their name drawn at the end of the show. The box office opens March 29th from 9-1 Monday-Friday. You can call for tickets toll free 677-691-9906 or 828-389-8632. Call anytime, leave a message and your call will be returned. Tickets are $13 for adults and $8 for students. Evening performances begin at 8 with Sunday matinees at 2:30.

Thompson named artist of the month Art Works Artisan Centre is proud to present Ann Thompson of Hiawassee as April’s Artist of the Month. Come by Art Works on Saturday, April 3rd, from 1 – 4 pm to meet this talented artist. You will also have the pleasure of watching Judy Brotherton, this month’s demonstrating artist, as she quilts with vintage fabrics from the late 1800’s - 1930’s. This event is sponsored by the Mountain Regional Arts and Crafts Guild, Inc. Ann Thompson began oil painting over 45 years ago while living in Germany. After traveling the world with her Air Force husband and raising a family, Ann, who was born in Hendersonville, NC, returned to her mountain roots where she now focuses on her art. In 1993, she began working in watercolors and experimenting with new styles of painting. “In my paintings, the process and artistic growth are just as important to me as the finished piece,” Ann shares. “ Each time I begin painting, I hope to create a ‘memorable’ one that touches the viewer for more than a fleeting moment For me, there are no limitations except for self.” Ann is a signature member of the Georgia Watercolor Society. Her award-winning paintings have been included in national exhibits sponsored by the Louisiana, Georgia, and Rhode Island Watercolor Societies. She has been published in an International Artist series of “how to” books, the Georgia Heritage Center’s Experience Art, and was the cover artist for the March 2006 Laurel. Her work is presently available at Turning Creek Artisans in Clayton, the Sautee-Nacoochee Center Gallery in Sautee, and Art Works Artisan Centre in Hiawassee. Judy Brotherton has been quilting for the past ten years. Her lovely quilts hang from the loft railing at Art Works and immediately catch your eye when you walk in the door. Judy especially likes finding fabrics in antique stores to use in her quilts, such as the old printed feed sacks people once made into clothing. Ann’s work will be featured throughout the month of April at Art Works, located behind the Holiday Inn Express on Big Sky Drive. Hours are from Monday through Saturday from 10 – 5. For more information, call 706-896-0932.
