MARK LINKOUS

The Elusive Musician 1962-2010

Rock star Mark Linkous, best known as the leader of Sparklehorse, operated a secret recording studio in the mountains of North Carolina.

ark Linkous wasn't born to be a coal miner. Determined to keep out of the Virginia mines that consumed his family in the 1960s, he turned to music. He became a rock star, moved to North Carolina, and on March 6, took his own life. CNN. The New York Times. Rolling Stone. The Washington Post. The news of his death... shocking. "Shot himself. With a rifle. In the heart. Knoxville, Tennessee." An anomaly among rock stars. Popular, famous, but living shy and secluded in a small mountain town no one's ever heard of: Hayesville. The leader of an alternative rock band called Sparklehorse, he operated a secret recording studio in the heart of Andrews, and called it "Static King."

The studio album

After listening to some of her songs, Linkous was persuaded to produce two demo tracks for Martin's album. "We spent lots of long hours together at that studio," she said. "Everything in his studio was old. If he had to have a new component he would deface it in some way." At times production had to be stopped for up to three hours at a time just so Linkous could fix his vintage equipment, she said. "He was extremely Appalachian in his approach to everything he did," Martin recalled. "We're so lucky that he lived in these mountains as long as he did."

The elusive musician

"He was extremely shy, painfully so," recalled Angela Faye Martin, who worked with Linkous on the last album he produced prior to his death. He avoided parties and never wanted to be around more than four people at a time, she said. The two met in February 2008 when Martin, a Franklin-based singer and songwriter, traveled to Andrews to seek his expertise recording two demo tracks. The only problem, Martin said, was that no one seemed to know who Linkous was, let alone where his studio was located. Local record store owner Dean Williams was the only one who said he knew the elusive musician, but he wouldn't reveal the spot of the studio. Williams said he wouldn't even tell his friends when Linkous was in town after a tour. The few people who knew the whereabouts of the artist's lair kept the secret out of respect, he said. But the studio was never far from sight. Linkous rented a building across the street from the record store, Williams said. The record master described Linkous as "a close distant friend." It seemed as if Linkous "turned on a switch" when performing for a live audience, he said, but when the musician came off stage "he was a very private person, more private than any person I've ever met." "Even talking with Mark was like feeding berries to a deer," he said. "There was something very fragile about his personality."

Mark Linkous lays the bass down on Angela Faye Martin’s song, “Summer of Lightning” in his secret Andrews studio in 2009.

Despite a studio filled with "freaky organs," and a collection of old motorcycles, Linkous didn't fulfill the "slob stereotype" of most rock stars, Martin said. "He was the most organized person I've ever come across in music. And I've been doing music for a long time," she said. "I'm probably a better housekeeper because of him." After executives turned her music down, blaming the economy, Linkous decided to produce Martin's 10-song album himself, beginning in January 2009. "He was at a point where he needed to help somebody," Martin said. "He did it – by industry standards – for the tiniest little bit of money." When Linkous worked on a project, it completely captivated his attention, Martin recalled.

"He was incredibly diligent; he would rarely even pick up a ringing phone when you were working with him." At times Linkous would work for 12 hours at a time without eating or drinking, Williams said. "Compared to his peers, he lived without a lot," Martin said. "He was comfortable in his southerness." In September 2009, the album, "Pictures from Home," was completed.

Light in his music

In Williams' words, the music Linkous created was simply "undescribable," almost incomparable to any other artist. "There was light in his music; there was a lot of sadness but you could tell there was a joy in the midst of the sadness," Williams said. He had a soft-spoken vocal style almost like whispering, Williams described. "He put his heart into every piece of music that he made." Linkous was a "brilliant engineer, able to create surreal atmospheres," Martin said, adding that he'll long be remembered as a talented songwriter. "There's a lot of beauty and a lot of hope in his songs," she said. At times his music boasted strange rhythms and rock and roll themes, but most of it expressed his love for the natural, Martin said. "He was trying to extract the inner thoughts of these mountains," she said. "And he loved these mountains so much... This was a good place for him to be because he really, really needed quiet." A man of few words, Linkous expressed himself instead through a menagerie of instruments. "He could play anything," Martin said. "It was a pretty special chapter of my life getting to work with Mark." Linkous was also known for his avid reading. Edwin Arnaudin, a librarian at the Andrews Public Library, said he began listening to Linkous' albums after he met the musician. "It takes some getting used to," he said. "It's like a challenging novel – it takes a few times, but it's worth the effort."

Fighting depression

"Mark struggled acutely with depression," Martin said. "We didn't talk about it much, but you knew it... He was constantly seeking positives, ways to deal with it." See MUSICIAN Page 2B

PLANT RESCUE

Elusive Ephemerals By: Elaine K. Delcuze Columnist With the onset of warmer weather, I become anxious to prowl the woods looking for those glorious signs of rebirth and renewal. I remember in springs past how suddenly the ground layer of the forest burst into bloom only to disappear as the canopy layer overtook it. Those early blooming plants – trout lilies (Erythronium americanum), spring beauties (Claytonia virginica) and (Claytonia americanum), Dutchman’s breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) and squirrel corn (Dicentra cucullaria), hepatica (Hepatica nobilis), and rue anemone or windflower (Anemonella thalictroides) – all bloomed almost simultaneously, then disappeared without an above-ground trace within a period of six to eight weeks. Meet the early spring ephemerals whose typical life-cycle from leaf to flower to seed is fulfilled before the forest over story fills out. These plants of the Eastern deciduous forest manage to store enough

energy in their underground parts – corms, rhizomes, tubers, or bulbs – to keep themselves going until next spring when they will again send up leaves and flower stalks, and then before June disappear leaving no above ground sign that they were there. The natural world is constantly revealing its extraordinary diversity, unpredictability, and life- supporting functions to us throughout the year. The Preservation Committee of the Community Council of UGA’s Mountain Research & Education Center has two programs targeted at preserving this unique landscape. The Appalachian Native Botanical Sanctuary program encourages landowners to set aside a portion of their property as a native plant sanctuary. The Plant Rescue project provides trained volunteers to help identify native plant material that may be in harm’s way during land development so that it may be relocated to a safe area. For more information on these programs please visit our website at www.gmrec.uga.edu/commcouncil, or call 706-745-9317 (Jennifer Cordier).

The Blessed Blend featured in Folk School Concert The Blessed Blend will be featured in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 19 at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown. Admission is free. Donations are welcome. The Blessed Blend composes and performs music, blending Native American and Celtic sounds from these two ancient and still thriving indigenous cultures. Joseph and Laralyn RiverWind comprise The Blessed Blend. Joseph is Arawakan Taino Indian with ancestral roots in Galicia. The Arawaks Nation were the original inhabitants of the Caribbean Islands and Florida. Arbor Day tree planting advice North Carolina Arbor Day is just around the corner (March 19), marking the beginning of the planting season in the Tar Heel State. Everyone grab a shovel and get ready to start digging! But wait‌. Before planting a tree, make sure you know how to do it correctly, advises the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). How a tree is planted and initially maintained makes all the difference in the world. Too many people are content to simply plant a tree and don’t ensure that the tree has the chance to go on to live for many years. “Planting a tree is making an investment in the future,â€? says Sharon Lilly, ISA Educational Director. “You must care for and nurture your young tree so that it will pay dividends for years to come.â€? Tommy Talton performs at Sautee Tommy Talton is one of the best songwriters and guitarists of our time. Talton showcases not only his classic slide and guitar work, but his distinctive vocals, and passionate songwriting. His performances appeal to all ages, as evidenced by the wide age range of audiences at its live performances. Expect to hear music from many genres from blues, southern rock and country rock to Americana, R&B and soul. Rhythm & blues is not a complex musical style, and nobody understands this better than vocalist and guitar master Tommy Talton. Like other veteran R & B musicians, Talton does not care how fast he can play. He does not care how many chord changes he can fit into a measure, or how many tempo changes he can build into one song. What Talton does care about is texture, restraint, touch, and feel. He cares most about those notes that remain unplayed. Tommy Talton has spent his entire career searching out just the essential notes. Never showboating or grandstanding, he lays back, letting his refined flair for lyrical melodies and his velvety-guitar hooks speak for themselves. Tommy was a founding member of Capricorn Records group Cowboy. While in Macon, GA through most of the 70s, Tommy was a studio musician recording with artists such as Bonnie Bramlett, Chuck Levell Martin Mull, Corky Lang (West, Bruce and Lang, Mountain), Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Clarence Carter, country legend

Kitty Wells, Alex and Livingston Taylor, Arthur Conley of Sweet Soul Music fame, and more. He toured extensively throughout the U.S. with Cowboy and with the Gregg Allman tour, from Carnegie Hall (as special guests) to Fillmore West in San Francisco and most cities in between. Tommy was also the guitarist on Gregg Allman’s “Laid Back album. Tommy lived and toured in Europe throughout the 90s and formed a group there, called The Rebelizers, with members of Albert Lee’s band, Hogan’s Heroes. By and large, it is as rare as horse feathers in a pillow to recommend musicians or artists with unbridled abandon. Typically, one person's stack of musical CD treasure is another's bathroom doorstop, making such recommendations tenuous at best. In the case of Tommy Talton, however, there is no possible way to over-endorse him. Grab your hat, dust off your listening ears and prepare to be impressed by one of the finest singer/songwriters/guitarists in the South! Talton performs in the Sautee Nacoochee Center Theatre March 20th at 8pm. Tickets are $15.00 plus tax for members and 20.00 plus tax for non members. Tickets are available on line at www.snca.org or by calling the Center box office at 706-878-3300. The Sautee Nacoochee Center is located at 283 Hwy 255, just north of the Old Sautee Store at the intersection of Hwy 17 and Hwy 255 in northeast Georgia.

8B The world's most authentic anatomy lesson found right in Midtown Atlanta By: Bryan Hughes bryan@wncSentinel.net Preserving the human form is something that artists have done for centuries, using every type of medium from mud and rock to paint and canvas. In more recent times these works of art have commonly been displayed in exhibits and museums for the enjoyment of the masses. I recently had the opportunity to visit one such exhibition. In fact, this exhibit allowed me to become very well acquainted with the subjects on display. Meet Tim*, the very agile, athletic fellow posing above. Much like many of the people depicted in art museums, Tim is dead. However, for this exhibition, that is where the similarities end, and the astonishment begins. Tim's entire body has been methodically pulled apart and preserved in a polymer. He was then strategically pieced back together and posed to showcase how our muscles work when we're in motion. At Bodies the Exhibit, Tim isn't merely depicted on canvas or cast in concrete. In this case, he IS the exhibition. It's an interesting and unique concept to think that Tim will be present for every unveiling of his exhibition, considering that Lisa Gherardini was about 300 years too late to see her portrait put on display for all to see in the Louvre. For most, the notion of walking through room after room of cadavers with exposed organs, would seem too ghastly to stomach, and believe me - Bodies the Exhibit has met with a slew of controversies. However, when deciding to see "Bodies" for yourself you have to put all of your preconceptions aside and look at it for what it really is - an artistic and scientifically invaluable display of the human body. In the course of one afternoon, I learned more about the way the body works and my own physical makeup, than I did in my eighteen weeks of tenth grade biology (perhaps I should have paid closer attention in school). As I walked through the exhibition, I stared, completely bewildered by the design of the human body. Throughout the duration of my visit, I had to repeatedly remind myself that these were once living breathing humans. The exhibition takes you through every single "system" our bodies have - from our circulatory and nervous systems, right down to our organ and reproductive systems, each one displayed for the scientific marvel that it is. Of particular interest, was the way an entire circulatory system was completely extracted and preserved. Every single vein, artery, and organ involved in pumping our blood was cast in plastic and illuminated with a haunting hue of crimson red. Seeing it in front of you, it's almost as if you can feel your blood flowing through all of the intricate tunnels and passages right down to your toes and fingertips. Many of the specimens on display had died of various diseases and ailments. The damage done by cancer, stroke, and heart attack was abundantly apparent in quite a few of the subjects. On display was a smoker's lung - completely charred from years of smoking. To the right of this was a clear plastic bin containing cigarette packs that had been voluntarily donated by exhibit patrons, obviously moved by the dismal idea of having charcoal for lungs. Even though I don't smoke, the images from the various exhibits will be forever etched in my mind as a constant reminder to take care of my own body. Bodies the Exhibit is a head to toe journey that examines the human form at all stages of life, including our time in the womb. This exhibition is something that all people should take the time to see for themselves, and there is no way to truly describe the overwhelming effect it can have. The educational value is priceless. "Bodies" would make a fantastic field trip for High School students, Medical Students, even Doctor's and Therapists. The exhibition is open until the end of May at Atlantic Station in Atlanta, and you can find tickets and more information online at bodiestheexhibition.com. As for our friend Tim, thousands of people can now say that they know him better than he knew himself - at least anatomically. *The name of this subject is not actually Tim. The identities of the specimens on display can not be revealed for security purposes, but I think he looks like a Tim.
