Art history in Spain Shipmates, it’s merry Miró month! However, I’ve a feeling that we’re back with the ‘Art: what is it?’ debate. Recently, I wrote an article for an eximious Essex mag concerning one Miró (1893/1983) and was subsequently subjected to a telephonic tirade from one Vera Viz of Basildon. She bellowed “my daw’ers San and Tray can do bet’a than Miró an their only 5 an 7 years old.” Now that’s as maybe, Vera, but your precious pinkies are just monkey see, monkey do. Imitation is everywhere; the key to Miró’s greatness is originality. In the 30’s fellow surrealist, Frenchman Yves Tanguy (1900 – 1955) was the only artist to produce somewhat similar imagery. ‘Put yourself into the trick of singularity’ says Sir Toby Belch to Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Sheakspears ‘Twelfth Night’....and Miró did just that. There are detractors: crusty pedants who say that Miró’s work is not serious art. For my part I’m a protagonist of fun, which is probably why I chose Rafael Zabaleta’s ‘Jardin de Quesada’ for my very first article in this mag. I view the cultural competition between tragedy and comedy as mere intellectual snobbery. ‘Twelfth Night’ is not inferior to ‘Hamlet’ simply because the former is comedy. Miró’s ‘The Flight of the Dragonfly in Front of the Sun’ of 1968 (reproduced here), is as worthy of a place in the canon of Spanish art as Goya’s ‘Disasters of War’ of 1810 – 1814. The parting shot, in praise of Miró, is a quote from contemporary British artist Anthony Green R.A. Talking about his own playful work, Green said: ‘art does not have to be angst-ridden to be valid’. That’s right, isn’t it Miró? Keep reading Dandy and Beano. TTFN, Quirkily yours, Sir Percival Trodnip RN RTD

DJ Deano

Welcome to the very popular music article in The Sentinella that is growing month by month. Thankyou readers! Last month we featured the wonderful Curtis Mayfield, I am very pleased in August to bring you Odyssey...a New York based dance music band! Yours in music DJ Deano For a group so defined by the disco era,it's appropriate that Odyssey were formed in New York City.Originally called The Lopez Sisters,Lillian,Louse and Carmen's parents came from The Virgin Islands but their daugthers were born and raised in Stamford Connecticut USA. Carmen left the group in 1968,initially replaced by Manila born Tony Reynolds then subsequently by Bill McEachern. They developed a style incorporating clothes designed by Louise in an African tradition and a vibrant, funky live show.

No. 5. 1980 proved a very successful year for the group as 'Use It Up And Wear It Out' topped the UK charts in June and the beautifully soulful ballad 'If Your Looking For A Way Out' provided them with their third Top 10 hit.

In 1977 they hit the big time with 'Native New Yorker', an epic homage to the city that never sleeps! Although it was a Top 20 hit at home it proved much more popular in the UK peaking at

The hits continued with the Lamont Dozier classic 'Going Back to My Roots' in 1981 and the effortless pop/soul offering 'Inside Out' in 1982. By this point though the disco nights had become the new romantic dawn and Odyssey were unable to make the transition.

T

he mutterings from Mojacar playa are most disturbing. A situation is arising that is very very close to my heart. It now appears that 'The People Running All Things, Seemingly (Hereafter referred to, for the sake of brevity you understand, as P.R.A.T.S.) have decreed that every bar should be fitted with a decimeter. Now, to the uninitiated, this could be some kind of slide rule, but as a professional working musician for 33 years, I know exactly what it is. It is the work of the devil, and can singlehandedly destroy a venue, or in our case, an entire Playa. It is the bitterest pill, when you consider that the venue owners, who are already struggling to eke out a living from a tourist industry in it's death throes, courtesy of the P.R.A.T.S, have to fork out 1,500 Euros to buy a box which will kill their

9

livelihood. Already, venues are cancelling acts. It is said that if the Police are called to a venue for transgression, i.e. music being played above the totally unworkable level of 55 decibels, then the venue will be shut down. This must stop! The venues are dying, the Playa is dying. The musicians have nowhere to play. Somewhere along the way, Mojacar forgot where it came from on. I don't mean when the Moors trotted in. I mean when the people of this region had a horse if they were lucky and Mojacar village was dead. Today's incumbent could do very well to look to the Mayor back in those days, who encouraged artists and musicians to come and settle here and bring this place to life. And the P.R.A.T.S treat them like THIS??? How dare you.

As Spain prepares itself for a month of R&R Square Eyes sat down to look at the best ever holiday movies. It may just be a reflection on the Square Eyes family holiday past and present but the list included movies such as John Boorman’s Deliverance, the river-rafting trip in the deep south that goes horribly wrong (“He got a real pretty mouth ain’t he?”) and the Griswold’s Vacation (“if you were me, wouldn't you do the same thing for your children?”NO!). However after much wailing and gnashing of teeth top billing goes to Steven Spielburg’s 1975 tour de force JAWS. “She Who Must Be Obeyed” is still scared to venture into the waves after this one!

On it’s release JAWS became the first summer blockbuster and started a tinsel town trend as every year Hollywood rushes to cash in on the burgeoning cinema audiences. It grossed more than $100 000 000 in ticket sales but despite the money it made, the locals in Martha’s Vineyard where it was filmed were paid a meagre $64 to run and scream across the beach as extras. Further budget control was enforced when the director’s own dog was cast as that of Chief Brody! Spielburg himself also appears in the movie – twice but only as first clarinet in the beach scene and as the voice on Quint’s radio when Mrs Brody is trying to contact her husband on the Orca. Using the camera as the shark’s point of view, imbues the shark with a chilling anthropomorphic personality which was added to by John Williams score. It is certainly a brilliant piece of cinematography but was really just a consequence of “The Great White Turd’s” (Spielburg’s own term of affection) mechanical failings. After the shark had been built it was not tested in water and sank straight to the bottom and had to be rescued by divers. Spielburg also named him “Bruce” after his lawyer! For those eagled as well boggled eyed out there, during a night scene on the boat when Brody and Hooper are talking a meteor crosses the sky – did you see it?

Book review Black Cross by Greg Iles 1944 – even as the Allies prepare for the invasion of Europe, word comes that the Nazis have been developing and stockpiling lethal gas at a concentration camp deep inside Germany. Gas that could wipe out the D-Day invasion forces on the shores of Normandy. Churchill wants to carry out a limited attack to try and convince Himmler’s cohorts that the Allies have as much poison gas as they do and have the will to use it. When the Americans veto his plan, Churchill is forced to bring together a secret team to enact his plan. The team is an unlikely duo – Dr Mark McConnell a pacifist scientist and Jewish freedom fighter, Jonas Stern both of whom must come to terms with the true nature of their mission.

The plot twists around political and personal deceit and betrayal, switching from the preparations for the mission to the horrors of the concentration camp where medical experiments are carried out on children. The story is woven around a number of varied characters both historical and fictional; Jewish and Polish prisoners, partisans, a german nurse spying for the Allies and even an SS officer whose sense of moral duty, twisted by the Nazi regime believes he is assisting a camp inmate by forcing her into intimate relations. Book-ended by McConnell’s grandson learning the truth of his patrician’s participation in the war Greg Iles second novel is a riveting affair, full of suspense, gripping until the very last page. There may be some detractors over historical accuracies or misgivings about how the mission is carried out, but that aside this is a great WWII thriller. This book was recommended by John from THE BOOK BOX, where you can pick up a copy (see advert for details)

Comedy and Music! Over the past few years the residents of Alfoquia, Zurgena, Arboleas and surrounding areas have raised thousands of euros for the Vera Childrens Home by attending Charity evenings at the Bar Union. Last month we raised a total of 610 euros which has enabled the children to go to Malaga for a holiday. This ‘Comedy and Musical’ evening was such a success that due to public demand we have decided to have another, this time it will be held at El Pinar bar and will feature the international comedy star JUSTIN SANE, ably supported by our very own fabulous Mr Brian Dee, the wonderful Steve (Rod Stewart) Fisher and the one and only Dave (Sax man) Sharp. It will be a night to remember and will be held on the 14th August. The cost is only 10 euros and will include a buffet or BBQ, which has kindly been donated by Bar El Pinar. We have guaranteed a sum of 500 euros to the children's home and hope to exceed this amount; but this can only be done by the generosity of the kind people who attend these functions. To reserve your place email Peter Dell at peterjdell@yahoo.co.uk or contact Bar El Pinar.

Training entailed firing blank ammunition from shotguns and pistols while the horses were grazing, then approaching the horses allowing them to smell the fired weapons and rubbing them on their bodies. Very soon I was able to fire guns at any point next to the horse, and ride them whilst firing, without them flinching. The first wild west show took place at Pressed Steel factory in Oxford, was scheduled for 30 minutes included western speciality acts and culminated in a re-enactment of an Indian attack on a settler’s wagon. However not all went to plan. The hidden cowboys in the back of the covered wagon had been directed to open the sides and back of the wagon on command and shoot at the circling Indians, however excitement took over and they opened the back only all discharging their weapons at the same time. It

was mayhem, a huge sheet of flame and smoke exuded from the wagon, which took off like a rocket, Indians fell from their horses all over the field, horses ran amok and the whole thing lasted only 15 – 20 minutes!!. S On the Nose - The Ebor

sport 17

www.mojacar.thesentinella.com

Run on the Knavesmire at York, formerly the location of public hangings including that of Dick Turpin, the Ebor is the richest handicap in Europe. Not surprising then, it is one of the most competitive fields of the calendar and here’s hoping that not too many punters are hung out this year. The race is open to 3yo+ run over 1m 6f. In recent years older horses have done well with only one 3yo winning in the last ten years (Mediterranean in 2001). Trending over this ten year period suggests five is the optimum age. Again favorites have not been successful in the same period with only one winner, Purple Moon

in 2007 and who could forget Mudawin’s victory a year earlier at 100/1! What other pointers can the trends give us? Lucca Cumani has a good record and has entered some interesting runners for this year’s contest including Bourne. Richard Fahey is the top trainer at York but has yet to score in the Ebor however Barry Hills is another with a decent record at York and has won the Ebor. The ante-post market for Sharaayeen interestingly ranges from 33/1 down to 16/1 demonstrating a mixed view of his chances. Whatever you back – good luck! Betfred Ebor (Heritage Handicap) Saturday 20th August

In July 2003, Britain's Jockey Club attempted to stop a French horse from running in the UK, citing its offensive name. Though Weatherbys (which controls the registration of British horses) bans rude names, French authorisation for the name meant that the horse could run in Britain. "We were having a family lunch and were trying to come up with ideas," the horse's trainer Elie Lellouche recalled of the name. My son suggested 'Gros Nichons,' but that wouldn't have got past France Galop, so we decided on the English equivalent." The English equivalent? "Big Tits."

Vuelta a España 2011 Running from Saturday August 20th to Sunday September 11th 2011, the 66th Vuelta a España comprises of 21 stages, covering a total distance of 3,300 kilometres. Unfortunately the Vuelta makes only a short passage through Almería during the first mountain stage on Day 4 (23rd August). The stage starts at Baza and finishes in Sierra Nevada. The brief Almerían Veulta experience is a grueling category 1 climb in Sierra de Filabres along the AL-5405 south of Baza. The riders then continue to a further climb, this time a category 3, at Puerto de Blancares before this tough day’s racing climaxes at an altitude of 2130m in Sierra Nevada. It is incredibly difficult to ride in all three of the “Grand Tours” (The Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France being the others) so it is no surprise to see that Spaniard Contador does not ride in this

Mark Cavendish is set to compete hoping to win his second green jersey of the season from the last of the Grand Tours. At the top of a muddy hill, take it out of gear and let it freewheel down - it does not run away, it uses the ESP and ABS and all the other on-board gizmo’s to control the speed of the vehicle. 120 - 110 - 120 So there I was, tootling along on my way to Alicante airport, doing exactly 109 and a half kph (no, really) when I saw it. A 120 sign! Yes, that's right, the rumour was true. They just did it for three months to 'save fuel'. God knows how much it cost in overtime and manufacturing to change the signs overnight...TWICE, but have we really saved Spain's oil reserves in this peculiar scenario? From my experience yesterday as I returned from Alicante, the 120 signs have just given the Germans and those Spanish lucky enough to be the proud owners of an Audi A6, not forgetting the Brits who claim to be ignorant of any driving laws once they've crossed the channel, carte blanche to barrel down the outside lane at 180 in a fair impression of Clarkson, Hammond, May and The Stig all rolled into one. It's a little like boom and bust, or fasting and bingeing you see. If you've been hobbled, and are then suddenly let slip from the leash, then as sure as eggs is eggs, the dogs of war will put their paws to the metal and get their V8's a-growlin'

with renewed vigour. In short, I reckon the calculated savings went West in the first night when Fritz, Pedro and Clarkson took to the Autovia with unadulterated glee. We might mumble 'environment' under our breath occasionally to conform to social niceties, but underneath that polished chrome and waxed exterior, you know it and I know it...We're all petrolheads at heart. Perhaps a more simplistic signage system is called for. I was thinking something along the lines of 'Stop' , 'Go' and NEW!! 'Go Faster'. Kev Moore HEADLIGHT POLISHING FROM 15€ PER LIGHT

under siege. There is a well in the centre which brought water up 70metres to the people. Today this is landscaped and a pleasant place to wander. At the top of the flights of stairs is a wall topped with the Campana de Vela a bell erected during the 18C to announce ships sighted nearing the port or to summon soldiers to their battle stations. The second compound accommodated the Moorish kings, when resident in the city. In the 11C when Almeria was the wealthiest, most commercially active city of Spain, the buildings here were as brilliant as those of Granada. It is difficult to imagine when looking at the ruins. There are a number of enormous cannon balls lying around, but they could not have been the reason for the destruction, as it was impregnable at the time.

To visit the Alcazaba you need to be able to climb up many steps, there is no wheelchair access. The building consists of three compounds, and the first was designed as a military camp and an area in which the populace could seek protection when

This service, the first of its kind in Spain, forms part of the company’s commitment to quality and excellence, which have also made it the market leader in this business sector, due to the fact that it currently has over 63,000 foreign customers residing in Spain. As a result, services such as purchasing a policy, making enquiries, processing claims, sending documents and 24-hour assistance can all be carried out in English or German at a time which is convenient for the customer by making just one phone call.

And not only does Línea Directa offer the best, it also offers its services at the most competitive price on the market. It does this in two ways: - Price personalisation: behind each quote there is a sales professional who, via a quick questionnaire, will search for the best product and conditions to suit the customer’s personal requirements and will assess him or her according to their individual circumstances. - Maximum competitiveness: still at the best price, this month Línea Directa is making Expats an exclusive 12x11 offer, which allows them to enjoy one year of insurance for the price of 12 months. And what is more, if the person requesting this offer already has another car insurance policy with Línea Directa, then the offer will be 12x10, which is to say two months’ free cover. This is the result of a strategy which is permanently geared towards offering customers the very best quality at the very best price.

Selling your property

W

hen you want to sell your property, the estate agent will ask you for a number of documents which, according to Spanish law, he must be able to produce to potential buyers. Important is the Nota Simple: an excerpt from Property Registrar which shows debts and (mortgage etc.). Also bring your last paid waterelectricity and property tax bills. In its case: information on the contribution to the Association of Owners. In case of a property built after 2003, the estate agent might ask you for a Certificado de inexistencia de expediente sancionador, which shows that the property is not involved in legal actions caused by illegality. This can be obtained from the town hall, by paying a fee. When there is a mortgage on the property, this must first be cancelled before the buyer will accept the property. You should organize with the bank that their staff is present at the notary to cancel the mortgage as soon as you pay the outstanding.

The tax the seller has to pay is 18% on the difference between the price you bought for and the selling price. When you are not a tax resident in Spain, the buyer is responsible for paying a deposit on the aforementioned profit tax of 3% of the selling price. Normally the buyer will force you to take this off of the selling price. This is not applicable when you are a tax resident, which you must show in front of the notary by a certificate from the Agencia Tributaria. When you are a tax resident and you invest the money from the sale in buying another property in Spain, you can have your tax refunded. Rianne Smulders

Charity market For Franciscan nuns supporting the homeless

Artisan Market Hotel Zimbali, Vera Playa Every night from 7pm July to September It all started three years ago when Clara Pozo organised a small market with 9 stalls. Her companion next to her was selling things to raise money for an orphanage in Burma. Clara thought “why don’t I do this to raise money for the poor of Vera?” So she arranged a meeting with the Mayor, he liked the idea, and told her that the most needy were the Franciscan nuns who looked after the homeless. She put this into effect last summer, with 34 stalls, raising 2,870€. This year there are 52 stalls and she hopes to more than double last year’s takings. She is very pleased with this project because as well as helping the nuns she is giving 52 stallholders the opportunity to sell their wares.

SIR GANDOLF THE 300 POUND CAT No that is not how much he weighed, it was the cost of an air flight to get him here! Now you have to respect a twelve year old cat who managed to manifest an air flight to spend his retirement in the sun with a experienced chef to feed him titbits. But he was a magnificent beast in his Persian grey coat and white chest and renowned champion mouser. And never was a cat more welcome as we were inundated with rodents in the old cortigo where we had made our temporary home. The walls were two feet thick and had caña ceilings from where the mice would swing from ropes and swipe the sausage off your fork and smile as they passed, knowing that we were helpless. Sir Gandolf changed all that as he laid out the headless corpses on the foot of the bed, despite my protests. His efforts had not gone unnoticed for another creature was probably getting hungry.

living in Spain 25

All was at peace one siesta afternoon when a snakes head appeared from the ceiling slowly descending, stopping now and then to turn its head and look around with flicking tongue. We sat up in horror as this enormous beast’s head touched the ground, whilst its tail was finally leaving the ceiling. This thing was over three meters long. It slid along away from the bed towards two doors that were lying along the wall awaiting installation. Sir Gandolf rushed to the scene and waited patiently for the snake to appear at the other end of the doors. Our horror had now turned to fascination, was this little cat going to take on this enormous snake? The snake had other ideas as it slid into a dip in the floor, under the doors and over the cat´s tail so silently that the patiently waiting Gandolf didn´t even notice. He did however turn his head to see why we were falling about laughing close to hysteria where humour blended well with the sense of relief. Laurence Burton

Mojacar Pueblo by Mik from Ariba

Mojácar’s main claim to history at the begining of the 20th century was the birth on December 5th 1901 of José Guirao Zamora to a local ‘loose woman’ in the small and nearby farming hamlet of Campamento. The father was a local gad-about and future solid citizen, sewing his wild oats. The child was taken to Chicago by the mother, and adopted by the Disney family. You’ll know him as Walt. Well, so the story goes. Another story, perhaps with more basis in fact, was the departure of Pascual Artero from Aguas Enmedio (another local hamlet) in the 1930s to the Pacific island of Guam, where he provisioned the American army Photograph courtesy of Bluwater Web Design & Photography during the Second World War and inherited the nickname of ‘The King of Guam’. Luis Siret, a Belgian archaeologist operating in the area during the twenties, is credited with ‘discovering’ the local totem – the Indalo – amongst prehistoric drawings in a cave in Vélez Blanco. The name comes from the first bishop of Alméria, Indalecio. The totem however – a stick figure holding a serpent over his head – can be traced back in Mojácar at least as far back as the sixteenth century, and it was known as the ‘hombrecillo mojaquero’. It’s probably a fertility goddess, but who knows.

In the early sixties, the provincial ‘Gobernador Civil’ promoted a local man, Jacinto Alarcón, to be mayor. Jacinto managed, with nothing short of genius, phone numbers: to turn the town’s fortunes around. A group of artists (including Canton 950 256 161 Checa, Jose Luis Perceval and Rafael Lorente) had ‘discovered’ Mojácar – a 610 448 448 brown cubist village in ruins as the 1954 ‘Sierra Maldita’ melodramatic film 950 478 184 shows – and founded an art movement named after the Indalo, calling 950 475 089 themselves the ‘Indalianos’. Jacinto encouraged their activities, and hit on the idea of giving away land or ruins to those who were prepared to come and repair or build. Gardening in AlmerĂa guess there are many of you reading this right now who, like me, divide your time between Spain and the UK. Unless you have a good routine in place, your garden will suffer.

I

special attachments you can buy now which fit over the bottle neck narrowing to a point where it goes into the soil. This slows down the flow of water ensuring a more even distribution.

You may be one of the lucky few who have a combination of good neighbours and an automatic watering system; or comfortable enough to be able to pay a gardener. But if you're like the rest of us, then it's always a problem when you go away ensuring not only that your plants don't die of thirst, but that you don't come back to find your garden inundated with weeds. (Why do they always survive whatever gets thrown at them!).

Something you can do easily to conserve moisture in the soil is to mulch around your plants. A mulch can be anything from stone chippings to tree bark, shredded shrub clippings or chopped up leaf trimmings. The most effective method is to first put down a layer of weed supressing membrane (shop bought plastic stuff but even something like old loose weave carpet will do).Follow it up by topping with any of the above. Anything to keep the moisture locked in. It's always best to plant as densely as possible. The plant canopy itself will slow down the drying out process.

Native trees and shrubs can be left pretty much to survive on their own after you've nurtured them through the first year. It's worth repeating that it's always best to give them a really good soaking once a week than a shallow sprinkling every day. This will ensure they have a chance to put their roots down deep to search out that precious moisture. There are a number of things you can do for your specimen pot plants depending on the season and length of time you are away. With a small number of pots you can stand them together, preferably somewhere shady, in a shallow container on, for example, a piece of old towelling or foam mat. Stand a container alongside filled with water and hang a length of cord between, immersing one end in the water and the other touching the matting. Weight it down so it doesn't get dislodged. The cord will act as a wick taking up the water and keeping the matting wet. The pot plants should take up moisture through the bottom. Before you leave them give everything: plants pots and trays, a good soaking. Another simple thing you can do with a single pot is to take an empty plastic bottle, cut off the bottom and upend it into the pot burying the neck of the bottle in the soil. Fill the bottle and it will drip feed the roots with water. There are

And those weeds! Don't forget to give a final burst of glyphos-based weedkiller to your paths before you go. Fingers crossed til you return. The Lady Gardener

God and the farmer A farmer purchased an old, run-down, abandoned farm with plans to turn it into a thriving enterprise. The fields were grown over with weeds, the farmhouse was falling apart, and the fences were broken down. During his first day of work, the town preacher stopped by to bless the man's work, saying, "May you and God work together to make this the farm of your dreams!" A few months later, the preacher stopped by again to call on the farmer. Lo and behold, it was a completely different place. The farm house is completely rebuilt and in excellent condition, there was plenty of cattle and other livestock happily munching on feed in well-fenced pens, and the fields were filled with crops planted in neat rows. "Amazing!" the preacher said. "Look what God and you have accomplished together!" "Yes, reverend," said the farmer, "but remember what the farm was like when God was working it alone!"

Get Green - Almería’s Earthship part 3 "Imagine a home that heats itself, that provides its own water, and grows its own food. Imagine that it needs no expensive technology, it recycles its own waste, and it has its own power source. And now imagine that it can be built anywhere, by anyone, out of the things that society throws away." Michael Reynolds Building a permanent residential structure anywhere in the world incorporates working through a mountain of red tape, never more so than in Spain. Then try building your home in an earthquake zone deviating from current building codes and practises, using materials unfamiliar to the powers that be! Michael Reynolds advises taking a staged approach to planning – poco a poco. When Dave and Laura approached the local planning officer, they found him aware of “tyre houses” but said that permission could take years to come through. For full planning permission they would need to go through the “Project of Actuation” - a process whereby land usage is changed, then the various stages of Building Permissions. He did however allow them planning permission to build a small agricultural building called a navé. This would allow them to build a small “hut” learning the principles of biotecture whilst working through the rest of the process to receive full building permission for a dwelling. One of the benefits of earthship construction is that the rooms are essentially “U” shaped and can be completed in a modular fashion. Don’t be put off – persistence pays. Once the Project of Actuation was approved Dave and Laura

have found some very enthusiastic advocates of the earthship at the Almeria School of Architects (ASA) who are helping them complete the Building Permission process. Hopefully once one has been approved it'll make it easier for others. As we say in Spain - poco a poco. For more details of Dave and Laura’s project please visit www.earthship.es.

To look at any piece of Lloyd Loom furniture you could be forgiven for thinking it is cane but in fact it is manufactured from woven twisted paper and wire on a solid beech- wood frame. This has been the original method of manufacture since the 1930's when it was the chosen mode of furniture for bedside cupboards, laundry baskets and ottomans often painted in pink, lemon or even green to match the interiors at that time. In the last 20 years Lloyd Loom has regained its high status in the furniture industry. The new designs of furniture embrace all tastes, from traditional lounge chairs in any colour to cafe chairs and bar stools ideally suited for restaurant businesses as they are so long lasting and as there are no joints it wont snag on clothing. The beautiful outdoor collection has the added attraction of being weather proof with a selection of upholstery to suit any design criteria.

Fine furniture from Lloyd Loom

to your specification in any colour. It is very strong and unlike cane and rattan furniture which inspired the original elegant designs, it will last for generations. Lloyd Loom furniture is now available in Spain and is the well designed perfect answer for the terrace.

Each piece is individually handmade by craftsmen

How many ... interior designers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Answer: I think really the issue is not so much the lighbulb in this case, but the relationship between the lightbulb and the ceiling around it, and if were to introduce a lighbulb at this point, what knock on effect would that have on the room in general. A lightbulb in this context may seem like a small addition but in actuality could have an effect on the whole which will require a considerable amount of subtle work to be carried out on the

general interior design which would, of course, result in budgetary issues for you. Not saying we couldn't screw it in, but best to establish a baseline for this at an early stage.

Life behind the jump Ernest Hemmingway’s Mojito recipe 2 parts rum, 1 part lime juice, top up soda water, 10 mint sprigs, crushed ice, 1 lime slice, 1 teaspoon Sugar.

Mash the mint and sugar together. Add the (dark or light) rum and lime juice and pour over the ice. Top up with soda water. “Hey Pedro wanna a drink?” “I never drink before 5 you know that” “Hey remember it’s always after 5 somewhere in the world!” I’d staked out a stool at Tito’s passing the afternoon drinking coffee and reading boozy tales of the great and the good, just finishing a yarn from the inestimable career of Hemingway. “I’ll have a mojito then.” They mix ‘em here as good as at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana and if they are good enough for Ernest... As the story goes, Hemingway turned up in Key West with a bull fighter from Spain and settled on a rough joint downtown as his regular haunt. One night a young fisherman named Marco claimed he could out drink anyone in the joint. The gauntlet laid down, six hours and untold bottles later the young man fell off his chair. As a parting shot,

Hemingway got up and poured the last of Marco’s unfinished whiskey onto his unconscious face and left the bar. The ultimate insult. Family reputation at stake, Marco’s brother Mario planned to avenge his brother’s defeat in a similar contest with Philipino rum called Pero Negro Especial. The contest began. The contest was ended. The last thing Mario remembered was the following exchange: “You like the Black Dog?” he asked Hemingway. “De noche todos los perros son negros,” Ernest replied. “At night, all dogs are black.” It was pretty tough talk, all right. Mario reached for the bottle, and that’s the last thing he remembered.

On the tapas trail... I went out with Steve Homer, food photographer and founder of Sabor de Almeria, The International Food and Drink Festival, planned for May and June 2012. The plan was to photograph some of the more individual tapas on offer, and it’s been a hard task to choose just a few to publish here. We went to 102 Tapas in Palomares, a tapas haven in the plaza. Two shown here are their pea tortilla and some mini filo parcels containing vegetables and prawns, simply delicious. We then ventured down Mojacar Playa to Captains Tapas Bar and Restaurant, where John has a superb aray of freshly made tapas using mostly locally grown ingredients. The mouth-watering menu

includes John’s own tasty chili con carne; home grown cherry tomatoes in white wine, herbs and garlic; ‘tata bravas’ with taragon, white wine, tomatoes and worcestershire sauce; muscles with onion and scallop sauce; pan fried courgettes with garlic and butter; sardines mixed with herbs and tomato sauce; Manchega cheese and tomatoes and Thai green curry...to name a few!

Steve has just recently been shooting images for a new cookery book, featuring several Michelin star chefs. Visit his magazine website, www.comidadealmeria.com

Blonde on blonde

Sun screens can be useful for protecting our skin from harmful UV rays. However, they will not protect us from sun damage. Covering up between 11am and 2pm or staying out of the sun will be the safer option.

A Russian, an American, and a Blonde were talking one day. The Russian said, 'We were the first in space!' The American said, 'We were the first on the moon!' The Blonde said, 'So what? We're going to be the first on the sun!' The Russian and the American looked at each other and shook their heads. You can't land on the sun, you idiot! You'll burn up!' said the Russian. To which the Blonde replied, 'We're not stupid, you know. We're going at night!'

TOP TIPS • Apply plenty of sun screen and keep re-applying it through the day. Sun screen only works if you use enough. No sun screen whether it’s SPF is 15 or 50 will give you the protection it claims unless you apply it properly. A guide for an avarage person is two tablespoons of product to be used for all over coverage.

• Apply before you go out as you can burn in the first 10 to 20 minutes in the sun.

• Top up does not give you more time in the sun, it gives you the same protection as your first application. The higher SPF the longer you can stay sun safe, eg. SPF 25 gives you 25 x 10 to 15 minutes in the sun before you burn.

A man was sunburnt... A man fell asleep on the beach under the noon day sun and suffered a severe sunburn to his legs. He was taken to the hospital. His skin had turned a bright red and was very painful and had started to blister.

• Always use a broad spectrum sun block it will give you protection against UVA & UVB rays.

Anything that touched his legs caused agony. The doctor prescribed continued intravenous feedings of water and electrolytes, a mild sedative and Viagra.

SPF 15 gives you 93% protection from UVB rays SPF 30 gives you 96% protection from UVB rays

Rather astounded, the nurse inquired, "What good will Viagra do him in that condition?"

NO sun screen gives you total sun protection no matter how high the factor.

The doctor replied, "It will keep the sheet off of his legs."

Non attachment or the art of effortless living “Attachment is the origin, the root of suffering; hence it is the cause of suffering.” The Dalai Lama at Harvard, 1988 In our daily lives, we strive to achieve the best. From early childhood, we are told that we can do better and so the striving begins. Advertising in all its forms constantly tells us that there are better versions, bigger or smaller, of this or that and that we need them – more striving. And we put pressure on our family members to do likewise, or better! We develop routines, ways of doing things; we fill our lives and those of our loved ones with things that must be done to ensure we achieve .... the desired result. We can become too attached to how our ideas, desires, aims will turn out. Does this make our lives easy? No, it is limiting and tiring! And we suffer – as the Dalai Lama points out. So how should we live and fill our lives? One way is to embrace the concept of non-attachment, welcoming the possibility that life may be different from how we had imagined it. Through not being

attached to the outcomes of our ideas, dreams and goals, we get ourselves out of the way. This allows the universe to offer us far greater possibilities than we had originally conceived. by Paul Davies (contact details below)

Do you have issues with family conflicts, relationship problems, bereavement, alcohol or substance issues? Problems with teenagers, or issues with your neighbour? Maybe you just want to share your experiences, whether good or bad. You are invited to write to 'Marco' (marco.sentinella@gmail.com), a qualified professional, with lots of life experence, who will give sound and practical advice to enable you to work on resolving your issues and may also be of help to other readers.

Dear Marco I have a shopping problem that has come to a head because our electric has been cut off. I'm currently having huge rows with my partner because he spends around 100 euros a week on fags and beer, which is how I justify my own spending (shopping for nic nacs). He says he needs to smoke and drink as it's his only pleasure in life!! He hands over most of his wages each week and I'm responsible for paying the bills and shopping - but why shouldn't I have a budget for my own pleasure? Now my spending is being blamed for our financial situation. The truth is most of the stuff I buy ends up at the bottom of my wardrobe and he doesn't even know about it. It's pretty stupid really, something that started off as treating myself has now become almost compulsive - and I still find myself spending even though I know we can't afford it. But I'm confused about it all, because my partners addiction costs and he's not taking any responsibility. LM You have partly pinpointed the crux of the matter by saying 'something that started off as treating myself has now become almost compulsive - and I still find myself spending even though I know we can't afford it.' Without taking sides, I can see why there is resentment with your partner because he appears to spend so much money on tobacco and alcohol; which could appear excessive, but he does hand over most of his wages each week. You were responsible for paying bills and shopping for food, etc but because you have allowed your compulsions to take over, you now find yourself in your present predicament. He is probably as resentful as you are over the current situation. You may find it useful to explore with a therapist the reasons behind the compulsion, to give you better insight as to why you are behaving in this way and to enable you to make necessary changes in order to address the problem. You must rule the compulsion, otherwise it will rule you. forrestleecounsellingservices@yahoo.co.uk Phone: 693 489 725

The power of crystals Apart from being attractive, crystals are said to vibrate in tune with the person holding/wearing them, and each has different qualities of healing and power generation.

One of the crystals linked to August and September (Virgo) is Peridot. In ancient times, peridot was believed to keep away evil spirits. It is still believed to be a protective stone and is a powerful cleanser. Releasing and neutralizing toxins on all levels, it purifies the subtle and physical bodies and the mind. Burdens, guilt, or obsessions are cleared. Peridot has a tonic effect. It heals and regenerates tissues. It strengthens the metabolism and benefits the skin. Fractures A break or a crack in a bone is known as a fracture. Fractures can affect any bone in the body. Bones can fracture in a number of different ways. A simple (or closed) fracture is a clean break to the bone that does not damage any surrounding tissue or break through the skin. A compound (or open fracture) is when the surrounding soft tissue and skin is damaged. This kind of fracture is more serious as there is a higher risk of infection. Symptoms The symptoms of a fracture depend on the bone affected and the severity of the injury, but can include: • pain and swelling • bruising or discoloured skin around the bone or joint • the limb or part of the body being bent at an unusual angle • inability to move or put weight on the injured limb or part • a grinding or grating sensation or sound in the bone or joint • bleeding, if it is an open fracture.

Unless it is absolutely necessary, do not move a person with a fractured limb until a splint has been applied by a doctor or paramedic to prevent movement above and below the fracture. Treatment of a fracture starts with lining up the ends of the broken bone so that the natural healing process can begin. Aligning the broken bone is known as reducing the fracture. The healing process Most broken bones heal successfully once they have been aligned correctly and immobilised. During the healing process, bone cells called osteoclasts absorb any old or damaged bone, so that it can be replaced with new bone made by other bone cells called osteoblasts. New bone formed around a fracture is called callus. Callus forms on either side of the fracture and grows towards each end until the fracture gap is closed. Over time, the excess bone is smoothed off and the bone returns to normal. By Almeria Angels

horoscope by Madam Rohaizi 41 LEO (July 23 – August 23)

It is not always those out front who are the leaders – often the real power lies with those who stay quietly at the back. Sometimes more can be achieved by listening, and not speaking until you are quite sure of yourself. Nobody will question your decisions; after all, you are a Leo, and proud of it! VIRGO (August 22 – September 23) Don’t be carried along by the opinions of others. Count out the benefits of your life now, remember why you came to Spain in the first place, and then make your own decisions. Don’t let your mind be made up for you by anyone else, no matter how persuasive they may be. LIBRA (September 24 – October 23) If pressure is put on you to come to a hasty decision, take no notice. Bide your time, the answer will come to you. You are good at balancing the pros and cons, so have faith in yourself; your common sense and natural sensitivity will prove you right. Be firm, don’t waver! SCORPIO (October 24 – November 22) Don’t be all hot and prickly like a scorpion this month! Even if you feel that someone is out to get something (or somebody) that you regard as yours, don’t rush into the attack. Be cool and considered, to charge in headlong will be to play straight into their hands. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 – December 22) You are a bright spark, fun-loving and full of go. However, it’s August, it’s hot, it’s time to sit in the shade and chill. Take a few days to be quiet, to let others do all the entertaining. Don’t worry, you won’t get forgotten about, but you do need to recharge your batteries. CAPRICORN (December 23 – January 20) You may seen as quiet, even reserved by many, but you are nobody’s fool. You can always see the end game, and you are canny enough to know which corners can be cut to achieve your goal. Don’t be sidetracked – which is unlikely, as Capricorns never are!

AQUARIUS (January 21 – February 19) Whilst all around you are wilting, you are full of go. Not necessarily that you are rushing around a lot, but you have been thinking a lot. A friend will need your opinion, though they probably will not take your advice. Rise above it and your friendship will survive. That is important.

PISCES (February 20 – March 20) You can get carried away so easily that sometimes Life can sneak up behind you and catch you unawares. You will need friends to lean on at times this month – trust them, you have been there for them, and you will find them quite prepared to be there for you. ARIES (March 21 – April 19) You may think that not a lot is happening during August, but don’t be deceived. There is plenty going on, but sometimes you can’t see the wood for the trees. Keep your mind alert, keep you eyes open, but be careful to go for the best option, not necessarily the first option! TAURUS (April 20 – May 21) It will be payback for something this month. Life is not black and white, rather a full palette of all the colours including black and white. Likewise it’s not all give or all take, a little bit of each works best. So be gracious in defeat, and magnanimous in victory. GEMINI (May 22 – June 21) You are no slouch, especially in the brain department! However, you do tend to worry and agonise over sometimes quite small problems. Be warned, this can be used as a diversionary tactic to keep you from seeing the bigger picture. Be alert, and be prepared to move on if a solution is not immediately obvious. CANCER (June 22 – July 22) Try to make this an Aaaah! Month. Yours is a loving nature, so give in to your sentimental side. Family and friends will be in your thoughts in any case, so what is the harm in letting them know it? Be generous, be caring, just don’t let them take you for a mug!

Halphabet

Compound words Atoms bond together to form molecules, and letters bond, in an admittedly looser fashion, to form words. In the following ‘equations’, letters have been added to the names of 8 chemical elements. These letters can be recombined to make a synonym of the clue word(s) to the right of the equals sign. For instance, LEAD + R = ALDER

Cut each letter into two pieces that are exactly the same shape. All cuts use o n l y horizontal, vertical, or 45o diagonal lines, and it is okay to turn or flip pieces.

1. IRON + SP = Jail 2. ZINC + TIE = resident 3. BORON + C = wild horse 4. ARGON + AL = crunchy cereal 5. SODIUM + NT = alight 6. COBALT + KU = power loss 7. COPPER + ISE = submarine spyglass 8. CARBON + ILU = steroescopic

ABANDONED DOGS AND CATS are a huge problem in Spain. If you’re living here for any length of time then you will probably already have been approached to take on a stray (permanent or foster home), and if not yet then it’s only a matter of time. There are many local charities caring for and trying to home animals. Contact any of the animal organizations below to see how you can help - even if it’s just a bit of dog walking!

New pet travel rules Currently, anyone taking their pets into the UK, must have them vaccinated six months prior to travel, and also be microchipped. A blood test is needed a month later to ensure the anti-rabies vaccine has worked, then they are finally given a pet passport. DEFRA has announced new rules, bringing Britain into line with most of the rest of Europe, and now animals only need to be vaccinated 21 days prior to travel and the blood test is no longer a requirement. The new rules are expected to come into force from the begining of 2012.
