Senior Life columnist John Trieste is honored at Museum of Printing SPECIAL TO SENIOR LIFE

The world-renowned Museum of Printing in Haverhill, Mass. will open the Typographers Association of New York John A. Trieste Library Room with a dedication on Saturday, Sept. 17.

This room will be a treasured resource of the history of the typesetting industry and the role played by the Typographers Association of New York.

The Museum of Printing in Haverhill is the largest printing and graphics art museum in the U.S. and the only one of its size, east of the Mississippi River.

In its day, the Typographers Association of New York (TANY) represented more than 180 trade typesetting and advertising typographers in the New York City metropolitan area. TANY was founded in 1914 by a group of trade typesetting companies in New York City and functioned as a vibrant, dynamic and member-driven trade association until 1998. The introduction of the computer and constantly-advancing technology eroded the need for customers to buy typesetting services from trade houses. The end of the era for pre-press services ended the need for TANY. John A. Trieste was appointed executive vice president of TANY in 1965 and served in this position until 1998. His steady, innovative leadership, with the support of Mavis DaCosta, his administrative associate, charted an ever-changing course for TANY for 33 challenging years.

While he managed TANY, Trieste amassed a collection of typographic memorabilia such as trade notices,

BY MARY BROTHERTON Like a father with many children, Harry Wayne Casey, “KC” is proud of “Get Down Tonight,” the first hit for KC and the Sunshine Band.

He said, “They’re all my favorites. I created each one. How can they not be?”

Songs from KC and the Sunshine Band have been featured in more than 150 movies and have become a part of today’s culture.

“Once, I was in an airport in Louisiana and I heard a beautiful melody,” Casey said. “I stopped for a minute to listen. Then, I realized it was my song! It was “Come to my Island.” It was surreal.”

Casey, a native Floridian, still calls Hialeah his home. He attributes where he grew up to the multi-ethnic flavor of the feel-good music KC and the Sunshine Band has been producing since 1973.

“It’s a little bit pop, a little bit reggae, a little bit Latin, but it’s all fun,” he said.

Songs like “I’m Your Boogie Man” and “Shake, Shake, Shake” have been drawing people to the dance floor for more than four decades and the 65-yearold Casey said he doesn’t have plans to stop.

“I live for that moment when I can connect with my fans,” he said.

In 2002, KC and the Sunshine Band was inducted into Hollywood’s Hall of Fame.

“That was a great moment. It was an amazing accomplishment for my musical career, to see that star and to know millions of people will see it, too,” Casey said.

KC and the Sunshine Band is part of the lineup of 98.5 The Beach Bash Concert to celebrate the radio station’s 10th anniversary on the Space Coast.

Safety on the elevator

OVER 90 COMBINED YEARS IN THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY

BY SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY Throughout our lives,as we attend various events, travel to different destinations on business or pleasure, or even when coming and going from our residence in condos or apartments, we are often required to use an elevator. Using an elevator can sometimes put us in an uncomfortable environment or in direct contact with a potential attacker. While taking the stairs is always an option, most of us will end up taking the elevator and have to face the threat of someone else being on the elevator with us.

The first thing to consider is what your actions will be if, before you enter the elevator, the doors open and you are faced with a potential attacker. Before we consider what we would do, I believe we have to take a moment and define what a “potential attacker” looks like. Most people think that attackers dress or appear in such a manner that we immediately look at them and know they are violent criminals. The reality is that today’s criminals, in most cases, try to appear ordinary — not out of place — to lower your concerns. Since potential attackers could be wearing a suit, a casual outfit, or have someone with them that makes them appear nonthreatening, we must assume that everyone is a potential threat and gauge our actions accordingly.

When using an elevator, please consider the following safety measures and use them to avoid attacks by a violent offender: 1. Never get on the elevator with a stranger. You don’t have to give a reason why you are not getting on the elevator, but it’s great to be prepared with remarks that can help to protect you. I like to hear our citizens say they are waiting on someone they forgot something, or even just simply tell them to go ahead with no explanation.

2. If you decide to get on the elevator, never turn your back to the potential attacker. Always face the attackers and, when possible, actually engage them in conversation. By doing so, you show strength and not fear and also have the opportunity to once again demonstrate you are a “hard” target and not a “soft” target.

Additionally, if you turn your back to them, they have an advantage when trying to attack you. By looking at them, you have an opportunity to mentally document their appearance and dress in the event of attack.

3. If you are already on the elevator and an unknown person gets on the elevator with you, I would prefer to see you exit the elevator. You can always say you forgot something or even that you missed your floor.

I don’t care if you say you are on probation and not allowed to be around humans as long as you get off the elevator and into a safe environment.

4. In the event that you do find yourself on the elevator with a stranger or person who causes your “gift of fear” to engage, make sure you position yourself near the control buttons of the elevator and immediately locate the “Emergency” button in case you need to summon help.

5. Of course, the best safety measure we can have is to try and always have someone enter and leave a building with us. There is safety in numbers and having someone with you is an immediate tool to help protect you. SL

George Washington requesting that Philadelphian seamstress Betsy Ross design and create the field of blue with 13 stars for the flag. She gladly complied.

June 30, 1950 Truman orders U.S. forces to Korea

President Harry S. Truman marked the official entry of the United States into the Korean War by ordering U.S. armed forces to South Korea. Their mission was to protect and defend the South Koreans from invading North Korean armies. Notably, this order from Truman came only three days after the United Nations Security Council ratified a vote to provide military assistance to South Korea.

June 16, 1884 First roller coaster in America opens

The roller coaster craze in the U.S. started on this day when the first roller coaster opened at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The genius of LaMarcus Thompson created this new phenomenon and called it a “switchback railway.” An instant success, this early ancestor to the multiplicity of coasters in America cost only a nickel to ride and traveled at a whopping 6 miles per hour.

School’s out and it’s time to take a vacation. Check out some of the national parks around the country. Along with that, take the national parks quiz on page 11. It might provide some ideas for a vacation to remember.

Floridians have been making the drive north to the Carolinas for decades to get away from the heat, which makes us thankful for the improvements in air conditioning. On page 35, Andrea Gross and Irv Green tell us about their 12 days on the North Carolina coast.

When they weren’t on the beach, the traveling duo enjoyed historical sites such as Roanoke Island Festival Park, the detailed accounts by well-dressed docents of Beaufort’s Colonial period and the funky and imposing town of Wilmington.

For those staying home, the beach will be a place for picnics, volleyball and cooling off with a swim in the ocean. Be mindful of rip currents. Experts tell us what to do and not do on page 23.

Our popular columnist John Trieste, who gives us tips for one-day trips around Florida, will make a special trip out of state in September. He will make the trek to Haverhill, Mass. to the Museum of Printing for the dedication of the Typographers Association of New York John A. Trieste Library Room. Before he retired to Florida, Trieste was executive vice president of the Typographers Association of New York from 1965 until 1998. His special room will house his collection of typography memorabilia from a special era before computers changed typesetting services forever.

‘Moments of Tranquility’ performed at the Henegar Center

“Moments of Tranquility” presented by Dance Arts Centre is a performance of ballet, modern, jazz, acro, tap, lyrical and hip hop.

Jazz I will perform a salsa tribute titled 5 minutes in Florida. The inaugural acro performance for DAC incorporates acrobatics and dance, which includes a funky, robotic-like, techno routine.

Ballet II/Pre-pointe will perform “Amethyst”, which is based on the Balanchine masterpiece “Jewels”, a beautiful and haunting ballet to the music to Faure. The dancers depict the ballerinas of the 18th century romantic style and appear to float across the stage and blend in and out of complex groupings.

DAC Company dancers will close the show with an African jazz to Shakira’s “Waka Waka”. The character and message of the music drives unity and provides a celebratory, upbeat, fast movement.

Dance Arts Centre is a local nonprofit dance studio performing at the Henegar Center for the Performing Arts at 6 p.m on June 4.

Trieste resides in Indian Harbor Beach and is active with many volunteer outlets, including the New York State Club of Brevard County and AARP, where he has

served nationally and locally. Trieste contributes an award-winning monthly educational travel column to Senior Life.

Two hilarious fundraisers help Women’s Center SPECIAL TO SENIOR LIFE The old Nevins Fruit Packing building in Titusville will be transformed into a 10,000-square foot authentic Egyptian village for a night as part of a fundraiser for the Women’s Center, which has facilities in both Titusville and Melbourne.

The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 11. Everyone should wear togas.

Herman Cole, the chairman of the board for Parrish Medical Center, will dress as Cleopatra. In these fundraisers, some men dress as women to raise awareness for domestic violence. They walk in the shoes of a female character for a night.

A live stage show promises to be quite hysterical and good for a few laughs when everyone returns to work on Monday.

As part of the fundraiser, a photographer will be present for personal photos with Cole as Cleopatra.

Steak skewers, chicken skewers or vegetable skewers will be cooked at the warehouse. A Sahara Desert dessert tent will satisfy the sweet tooth of attendees, and the Julius Caesar salad palace tent will offer healthy fare.

Vendors will sell goods at specially decorated tents. A live band will perform, and there will be plenty of dancing and a full-cash bar offering the Mark Anthony signature killer drink.

Tickets are $65 per person and sponsorship will apply for both this fundraiser and the fourth annual Dude Looks Like a Lady event in September.

On Sept. 16, the fourth annual Dude Looks Like a Lady will be held at Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral. Sheriff Wayne Ivey created the event to benefit the Women’s Center.

Ten prominent men from all over Brevard County will grace the runway as well-known female personalities to bring attention to the problems of domestic violence. Each man will raise money before the event to help the Women’s Center.

All of the money from both events goes to the Women’s Center, but there is an informal competition between members of both the north guild and the south guild of Brevard County. SL

The Auxiliary awarded over $15,000 in scholarships to new and continuing full-time students this year.

Students majoring in medical fields at major colleges and universities receive $1,500 in support of their education.

The scholarship program has been aiding local students since the 1970s.

Applications are available every year between January and March.

Wuesthoff Auxiliary’s thrift store offers a variety of gently used merchandise at reasonable prices and donations are gratefully accepted. The Auxiliary Thrift Store is located at 1846 U.S. 1, in the Rockledge Square Shopping Center.

The Auxiliary provides community outreach including: • Volunteer services for community healthcare initiatives and amenities for patients • clothing and furniture donations • medical equipment to patients in need • unsold linens and towels from the thrift store are donated to county animal shelters • business attire is donated to those seeking employment, and money donated to local non-profit organizations in support of their missions.

At a recent meeting of the Space Coast League of Cities, the Florida League of Cities presented State Rep. Ritch Workman with a Legislative Appreciation Award.

“A lot of times, if they just avoid drinking coffee or tea in the evening or schedule toileting. If they get their priorities right, they don’t need a medication. It’s lifestyle changes and being more mindful of what they do,’’ she said.

Depression — often manifested as body complaints without actual cause — can also be treated with group therapy and by other means, she said.

Aging Services is different from other doctors’ offices because the entire patient’s lifestyle is taken into account and there is a social worker on staff, she said.

“It’s very important when you

talk to them about their medical symptoms. We have to ask about what’s happening at home and social issues because it’s all interconnected,’’ she said.

Early diagnosis is a key because it gives staff a chance to help clients plan for the future, such as establishing a living will and power of attorney.

“We want to have a plan in place when things are stable. We don’t want to wait for a crisis when decisions are made emotionally,’’ she said.

BY GEORGE WHITE Aging in place, safely for as long as possible, is the goal of Health First Aging Institute in Melbourne under the leadership of Medical Director Dr. Visalakshi Srinivasan, also known as Dr. Visa.

When that process is complicated with possible dementia or Alzheimer’s for those older than 65, there are the tests and services to help at the statefunded East Central Florida Memory Disorders Clinic at the same location.

“I want to spread awareness of our services because memory loss and getting old is such a stigma.

I want people to realize there are lots of things we can do to help age successfully. I want them to know that memory loss is not a normal part of aging, just like depression is not a normal part of aging. We can do a lot of things to improve their quality of life and keep them independent and functional and that’s what everybody wants,’’ she said.

Dr. Visa, who took the position

in 2005, works alongside an interdisciplinary medical team that includes nurse practitioners, specialists in social work, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, pharmacy, nutritional services, home care, private duty nursing and hospice care.

Dr. Visa’s professional interests include geriatric syndromes such as memory disorders, medication and polypharmacy assessments, gait and balance assessments, frailty and future planning for her patients.

“The biggest protective factor is education. There are people who don’t want to admit it because it’s fear. A lot of times they get confused between memory and intelligence. They are two different things,’’ Srinivasan said.

Testing early is crucial because there are ways to slow down the progression of memory loss and doctors can rule out reversible causes such as a vitamin deficiency caused by poor diet, according to Dr. Visa.

Art becomes their voice. Through painting, people are often able to reach outside of their dementia and paint a picture that reconnects them with a past memory.

guidance of a care professional and art facilitator who have been specially trained to work with individuals who suffer from memory loss and dementia. For most of the individuals who participate in the group, this is their first time painting.

Since there are no mistakes in art, the process is more important than the product. Caregivers are invited to paint as well.

National Wildlife Federation certifies new wildlife habitat in Melbourne SPECIAL TO SENIOR LIFE

The Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation’s (BAFI ) adult day care said the club’s garden in Melbourne has qualified for certification as a National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitat.

The habitat has been redesigned to provide essential elements needed to improve the habitat for birds, butterflies, frogs and other wildlife. It has natural food sources, clean water, cover and places to raise young.

Since 1973, the program has educated and empowered people to turn their small piece of the Earth, their yards and gardens, into thriving

habitats for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. This program helps wildlife and gives people a daily connection to the natural world, right outside their doors. During the past 40 years, nearly 200,000 gardens have been certified across America.

BAFI’s Janet Steiner stated that nature has therapeutic value for persons with memory impairments.

Signs of a Vital Life Number

Brevard is one of three counties included in a pilot program to help find lost Alzheimer’s patients, using an expansion of the Silver Alert system visible on signs on the Interstate.

Signed into law in 2011, the purpose of the Silver Alert, similar to an Amber Alert, is to aid law enforcement in the rescue and recovery of a missing person who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease or a similar cognitive disorder. There have been 1,271 Silver Alerts issued since it was enacted.

In the expanded program, called Lost of Foot, Brevard, Broward and Palm Beach counties are to establishing protocols to quickly look for those dementia patients who have “eloped” or wandered off without driving, said Carol Waters, Department of Elder Affairs Silver Alert Coordinator.

“For those missing on foot, the protocols needed to vary a bit since the highway signs would not be as helpful in trying to recover them.

Generally, for a Silver Alert Lost on Foot, when the incident is reported to law enforcement, they will notify surrounding jurisdictions as well as patrolling officers within the immediate area,’’ Waters said.

Broward and Palm Beach counties have already begun implementing the program with Brevard “expected to follow as they finalize the protocols,’’ she said.

• About 60 to 70 percent of persons suffering with a cognitive disorder will wander at least once during their disease process.

• The missing person on foot can travel a mile in about 15 minutes.

• Of those missing more than 72 hours, only 20 percent survive.

• Of those found alive, half were found within five miles of where they originated.

“Time is of the essence. Sometimes if it’s much more than an hour, you will have a very hard time finding them,’’ Joseph Downs said.

Downs is the coordinator for the more intensive program Project Lifesaver for Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. The free service fits and maintains at-risk patients with radio transmitters — each with a personal frequency — for recovery by law enforcement with special receivers.

An important piece of Silver Alert is what happens after a recovery.

The Florida Department of Elder Affairs contracts with Memory Disorder Clinics to work with families following an incident to educate them on how to prevent recidivism. They also alert the local facilities to meet specific needs of the individuals, their families and respite care for the caregivers.

But first, the lost must be found as part of the larger effort trying to react and get the word out quickly.

“It is important to prepare families, long-term care facilities, law enforcement and the community overall on the risks of wandering and the necessary steps to take in a wandering incident to increase the opportunity of recovery,” Waters said.

Florida is known for being a popular retirement destination, and according to a 2010 U.S. Census, the Sunshine State has 4.4 million residents that are 60 and older.

The stormy statistic is that every year, thousands of seniors in Florida are victims of elder abuse. Sadly, experts believe that for every reported case of elder abuse, there are as many as 23 cases that remain unreported.

World Elder Abuse Day (WEAAD) was launched 10 years ago on June 15.

On WEAAD, people are encouraged to wear purple, increase awareness of the signs of senior abuse and to promote a better understanding of the neglect and abuse of elderly people.

Elder abuse can be physical, mental or in the form of financial exploitation.

Common physical signs of abuse can include cuts, bruises, soiled clothing and the lack of necessities including food, water and utilities.

Signs of mental or behavioral abuse can be harder to spot, but emotional abuse also leaves a traumatic effect on seniors. Elderly persons who have been abused mentally may show increased anxiety, fear, confusion, isolation, agitation and withdrawal.

Financial abuse of seniors has also become prevalent. When someone is the victim of financial abuse, it can include the improper use of their funds, assets, and property or possibly deceiving an

older person into signing materials.

Elderly adults are abused in a variety of settings, including the homes of relatives, in their own homes and in medical facilities such as nursing homes. Elderly family members and friends deserve loving and respectful care in their twilight years, and there are ways that we can help ensure their safe care.

Some tips to help prevent elder abuse are listening to seniors and their caregivers, intervening when abuse is suspected and letting others know how to recognize signs of abuse.

MCT to perform Miller’s drama “The Price”

BY CARL KOTALA Arthur Miller’s play “The Price” is the kind of production that is sure to get people talking.

“It touches every part of you emotionally,” said Peg Girard, managing and artistic director at the Melbourne Civic Theatre, where the show will run every weekend from May 20 through June 26.

Starring Stephen Wolf, Terrence Girard, Rita Moreno and Steve Budkiewicz, “The Price” is about two estranged brothers who, after the death of their father, come together in an old brownstone to go through and sell off his belongings, which only helps to stir up longstanding hostilities as they dispute each other’s version of the family’s history.

Miller, who is famous for a number of plays including “Death of a Salesman,” debuted “The Price” in 1968. The well-received production was nominated for two Tony Awards, including best play.

“There’s comedy in it, as there is in life, but it touches all of those life feelings,” Girard said. “I think the audience is going to walk out, hopefully, and talk about it.”

The Melbourne Civic Theatre is the longest running community theatre in Brevard County. Originally known

as the Indian River Players, MCT has been producing shows since 1952.

Girard has been involved with MCT for 40 years.

The idea to put on “The Price” was in part to celebrate what would have been the playwright’s 100th birthday last October, but also because it has some personal meaning for Girard.

Of the six shows she puts on during a year, she said, five are for the audience and one is for her.

“The Price” is for her.

“It’s a play I’ve always wanted to do and it’s a play that’s a tour de force for actors,” she said. “I just went through losing my parents and going through that sphere in my life, so it kind of rang true for me this year.”

Though drama plays are not always popular, Girard said presales have been doing well as people are excited to see an Arthur Miller production performed by local actors who are well known in the theatre community.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays in the 93-seat theatre, located at 817 E. Strawbridge Ave., across from Melbourne’s City Hall.

Volunteers were honored at the Melbourne Police Department’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

SPECIAL TO SENIOR LIFE The Melbourne Police Department honored its 75 dedicated volunteers during an appreciation luncheon held on April 22 at the Hilton Rialto.

In 2015, volunteers gave a total of 11,972 hours of service, or the equivalent of $180,000 in staff time, to the citizens of Melbourne.

Volunteers help in almost every division of the Melbourne Police Department with tasks that range from providing traffic control, moving equipment and vehicles, assisting with administrative work and records and performing vacation and homeland security checks.

“Our dedicated volunteers provide tremendous behind-the-scenes support to the city day in and day out,” Melbourne Police Chief Steve Mimbs

said. “Moreover they are always ready when we call on them in times of crisis, providing vital logistical support during major events. Without our volunteers we would have needed 10, 15 additional officers to handle logistics and help ensure safety at these events.”

Before they begin service, MPD volunteers complete many hours of training in areas such as CPR and first aid, observation techniques, police procedures, traffic control, safe driving techniques, basic law enforcement rules and regulations, and how to effectively interact and communicate with the public. Strong young Ugandan children performing African dance with drums and in song recently energized residents at Anchor Care and Rehabilitation Center, 1515 Port Malabar Blvd., in Palm Bay. The Imani Milele Children’s Choir is in the second month of a sevenmonth tour throughout the Southeast.

Normally booked up nearly a year in advance, the choir, composed of boys and girls ages 9 to19, was able to fit in a local show May 23 near its headquarters in Sebastian.

Established in 1989, the nonprofit Imani Milele Children Inc. works with poor, rural communities near Kampala, serving more than 3,000 orphaned and vulnerable children by providing housing, education and skill training.

The choir’s performance was professional in every way, from the dramatic entrance where they walk and sing among the crowd, to spot on harmonies with each song choreographed and meticulously arranged.

Directors stood in the wings, sometimes pantomiming the performance to keep the children on track.

USO Central Florida welcomes volunteers military, retirees and dependents, giving them a place to relax and recharge in the midst of busy travels.

The goal is to create a 400-person volunteer base to help run the center.

Center Manager Annamae Kacsandi was at the club for an orientation presentation and training of new USO volunteers.

“The volunteers are the heart and soul of the USO,” Kacsandi said.

“Volunteers are why the USO is so effective today.”

The new USO Welcome Center will have six areas: the lobby area where guests are greeted by volunteers; the family room/lounge containing couches, TVs for watching movies, board games and gaming stations; the office/ computer center with email access, printer and fax machine; the quiet room with soft lighting and Lazy Boy recliners around the perimeter for guests to rest in; the “kids’ room” for children to watch movies, play a game, burn off steam; and the kitchen/snack area with

New and prospective United Service Organizations (USO) volunteers and members of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) recently convened at the Indian River Colony Club in Viera. Out of the approximately 50 attendees for both the MOAA meeting and for the USO presentation, many were elderly men who had served their country, some in numerous conflicts.

Robert Watts, 65, a USO volunteer and MOAA member, was in the Navy for 32 years, from Vietnam through Iraq and Afghanistan.

Watts said, “All of our members, a lot of us here, even though we are out of the service, we want to continue to serve. We want to make sure our military folks are being taken care of.”

USO Central Florida is currently building a 3,100-square foot welcome center at the Orlando International Airport, opening late this summer.

The center will welcome active duty

USAF 45th Space Wing supports SpaceX

Three volunteers from Brevard County

The U.S. Air Force’s 45th Space Wing supported the successful SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from Launch Complex 40 in May. The rocket was carrying the JCSAT-14, a communications satellite designed and manufactured by Space Systems/Loral for SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation based in Tokyo, Japan.

The satellite is designed to provide TV programming and broadband services in Japan, Asia, Oceania, Russia and the Pacific region for at least 15 years, replacing an older satellite called JCSAT-2A. This is the eighth major launch operation for the Eastern Range this year. A combined team of military, government civilians and contractors from across the 45th Space Wing provided support to the mission, including weather forecasts, launch and range operations, security, safety and public affairs. The wing also provided its vast network of radar, telemetry and communications instrumentation to facilitate a safe launch on the Eastern Range. SL

Masterson retired as a colonel and built a colony

BY MARIA SONNENBERG Retired Gen. Gordon “Bat” Masterson learned his work ethic from his father, who worked for the Ford Motor Company, where Masterson, the youngest of five children, joined his dad for a while as a machinist in the axle division.

Doris and Bat Masterson were all smiles on their wedding day.

His family eventually bought a 60-acre farm/country store/gas station outside Detroit, so Masterson’s father could basically work nonstop, weekdays at Ford and weekends on the farm. Masterson and mom minded the store and gas station and the family lived at the back of the store. Any spare time was spent working seasonal labor for neighbors.

Despite the commitments at home, the high school-age Masterson managed to participate in sports, play the trumpet and edit the school newspaper.

It was in high school that Masterson met Doris, the love of his life for six decades, before she passed away.

Masterson was the first in his

family to earn a bachelor’s degree.

He also joined ROTC and was commissioned upon graduation. By that time, he was also a married man, and his beloved Doris, who was working as an administrative assistant while Masterson finished school and worked odd jobs such as painter and parking meter installer, was happy he was interested in the Air Force as a career.

He was given the opportunity to attend Air War College, something the young man who once installed parking meters never could have imagined.

“I couldn’t believe a kid like me was going to such a prestigious school,” he said.

A full colonel in 1973, Masterson headed to RAF Bentwaters in England, where he was in charge of three squadrons training for Cold War missions. A couple of more assignments followed, including the Pentagon, where he served for three years as director of maintenance and supply for the United States Air Force’s 130 bases scattered around the world.

Bat Masterson and many others attended an early outdoor board meeting at Indian River Colony Club.

“We both fell in love with the Air Force,” Masterson said.

Masterson was directed to maintenance duties at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colo. By the time Masterson was assigned to Alaska’s Elmendorf Air Force Base, the Mastersons had four children. When all was said and done, the Masterson clan numbered seven children.

After attending Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Ala., Masterson was later promoted to inspector general, visiting 100 Air Force bases throughout the world.

After Masterson became a member of the local chapter of the Military Officers’ Association of America, fellow officer Charlie Briggs approached him for help in launching Briggs’ vision of an active community for retired military.

“I was impressed by the man and his vision,” Masterson said.

Masterson agreed, setting himself up for many months of never-ending work, particularly after Briggs unexpectedly died from a heart attack leaving Masterson “last man standing” in a complex, long-lasting endeavor.

“I practically lived in my office for 10 years,” he said.

Mobility is vital for good health during senior years

BY GEORGE WHITE Michael Edwards has one goal in mind — to keep people moving.

A certified personal trainer, athlete and author, Edwards believes that physical activity is necessary for good health. He has spent a lifetime coaching and instructing others to get in shape and stay physically fit.

“As a certified health education specialist with over 12 years of experience in health and wellness, I learned that individuals are reluctant to alter their current activities and behaviors unless something pushes them to make changes,” Edwards said.

“Meanwhile, I can only be an example of what a good lifestyle can do. I take no FDA-approved drugs, have no aches and pains, have lots of energy and have very few medical bills!”

Edwards recalls how his own mother, who passed away last summer at the age of 102, still participated in fitness programs at the assisted living facilities where she lived.

He advocates participation and competition, and said one way to do that is to train and participate in the Florida Senior Games.

Cataracts can be corrected with little downtime

“The senior games are a lot of fun.

You meet people that have similar

interests and want to stay healthy. You meet people from all over the state as well as from other states. It is one of the best ways to stay motivated,” he said.

Still, Edwards says that many seniors don’t know about the games. He is trying to get the word out.

“I am always trying to get people involved in exercising for fun and competition,” he said.

It’s as easy as contacting the Florida Sports Foundation, filling out an online application and sending in a fee to participate.

“There’s a really funny movie that was produced about the national senior games,” said Edwards.

“Age of Champions” is a PBS documentary that highlights five senior athletes headed to the National Senior Games.

Edwards also writes about health and wellness and has incorporated some of his previously published articles into a book called “Against the Grain: Reflections from a Rogue Health Educator,” available through Amazon, Kindle or the author himself. SL

May 2016 was named as Cataract Awareness Month by Prevent Blindness America, doctors want to get the word out about better treatment options including outpatient procedures and even some surgeries that result in vision correction.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the United States, and the leading cause of blindness in the world.

There are 24 million Americans older than 40 who are affected by cataracts, but new materials and surgery now can achieve excellent results with a minimum of down time.

“The improvements of the lens now are such that we can give people the ability to see near and far and improve their vision. It’s possible. You can have three fields of vision restored with some. The results can be amazing,’’ said Regine Pappas, comprehensive ophthalmologist and a fellowship trained glaucoma specialist at Pinnacle Eye Center in Melbourne.

Cataracts involve problems with the lens through which the light passes and focuses the image on the retina.

Yellowing and hardening of the lens due to cataracts means that the lens no longer functions correctly and vision is progressively impaired. Cataract surgery involves implanting an artificial lens now made out of acrylic.

Traditionally, surgeons would make an 8mm incision and early versions of lenses were silicone, she said.

not as sharp or defined. Now the lenses are very specialized and more like your original lenses. From an 8mm incision we’re now down to a 2mm incision and a laser can be used to make the incision although an experienced surgeon could do the same thing,’’ she said.

There is no proven way to prevent age-related cataracts. However, choosing a healthy lifestyle can slow the progression of cataracts. Some ways to delay that progression include avoiding smoking and eating healthy foods.

Imagine a pipe that carries water into a home year after year. Over time, the minerals in the water build up on the interior of the pipe, significantly reducing its diameter. As a result, the flow of water in the sink becomes more of a trickle than a steady stream.

Lifestyle Considerations Diet and lifestyle are important components of PAD management and prevention. Smokers should crush out that last cigarette and never look back. Smoking is a major risk factor for PAD, as with so many other serious illnesses. A tobacco-free state is an essential part of a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The same thing can happen in the human body.

Arteries provide the critical function of carrying blood to the head, extremities and organs. When arteries are healthy, their inside surfaces are smooth and the blood flow is unimpeded. But cholesterol, calcium, proteins and other material in the blood can form plaque, a substance that cakes the walls of those vessels and hardens. When that happens, the inner diameter narrows. Consequently, the amount of oxygen-rich blood headed to vital parts of the body diminishes, sometimes leading to peripheral artery disease (PAD).

If left untreated, PAD can have serious health consequences, including heart attack, stroke and even gangrene. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that about 8 million Americans – as high as 20 percent of all those older than 60 – are afflicted with PAD. Muscle Cramps A Warning Sign PAD commonly affects the arms and legs, which depend on a strong arterial blood flow. People with the disease often complain of painful cramps in their extremities during exercise. They may notice leg or hip pain when they’re out walking or climbing flights

Regardless of the medication prescribed, it’s critical to follow your healthcare provider’s directions. Failure to do so can lead to increased problems with PAD or, in the most serious instances, heart attack and stroke.

Besides cramps, look for muscle atrophy, hair loss, sores that won’t heal, and shiny skin that feels cool to the touch. If you do experience any of these symptoms, contact your physician as soon as possible. He or she can check you for PAD through a number of painless and noninvasive tests.

Managing PAD Despite all the serious health problems related to PAD, it’s a largely manageable condition. In certain

FAVORITE WORKOUT ACTIVITY: My favorite workout involves working out on motorized therapeutic exercise machines. I use them two to three times a week for one hour. I also got a Fitbit and set my goals for walking at 10,000 steps a day. And, I also walk my dogs twice a day.

MOTIVATION: I have four grandsons who are very active. We love the water, boating, fishing and golfing. Both my dogs and grandchildren motivate me, so I can spend quality time with them. I also want to increase mobility and energy to have a healthier, active life.

NUTRITION: My nutrition is mostly low carb. I try to stay away from sugar and everything that is white.

MOTIVATION: My motivation comes from seeing new people in the sport enjoy success.

Nothing pleases me more than running with someone doing their first 50 km or their first trail run.

NUTRITION: If it doesn’t move, it is food.

Getting calories is more important for me than where it comes from when I am hungry. If I have a choice, I like to hydrate with water and Tailwind, an additive that provides calories and electrolytes. I eat nut butters and have breakfast drinks for more calories.

FAVORITE WORKOUT ACTIVITY: Long slow distance running and walking at low tide or on a trail. The length and quiet allows me to think, take photographs and compose poetry.

If I am stuck on a mathematical research problem, the solution may reveal itself as I am trundling along.

MOTIVATION: I run for the love of running. I have run for as long as I can remember.

Side benefits include improved health and a lowering of stress and weight management with little to no calorie counting.

NUTRITION: I eat a balanced diet of the four basic food groups. I eat seafood, raw or steamed vegetables, black beans and rice. I eat meat one or two times per week. During a long 100-mile ultra or multi-day event, I eat anything and everything, even decadent food such as a grilled cheese with bacon. SL

Medicare and VA health system benefits

Ask Lance Lance P. Jarvis SHINE BALANCE BILLING AND QMB MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES Dear Lance, My only income is a small amount from Social Security, and I have very limited financial assets. With the help of a SHINE Counselor, I applied for and am now enrolled in a Medicare Savings Program through Florida Medicaid.

I have been classified as a Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB). It is my understanding that QMB beneficiaries are not required to pay Medicare deductibles or co-insurance. One of my doctor’s offices insists that I give them a co-insurance payment at every visit.

Am I correct that they should not be asking me for a co-insurance payment?

Puzzled Dear Puzzled, I am sorry to hear that you are having this difficulty.

Medicare Savings Programs provide financial assistance to Medicare beneficiaries with limited income and financial assets by paying the Medicare Part A and/or Part B premium, saving a minimum of between $104.90 and $121.80 each month.

The three main types of Medicare Savings Programs include the following:

1. Qualified Medicare Beneficiary(QMB) Program – Helps pay for Part A and/or Part B premiums and deductibles, co-insurance, and co-payments.

2. Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB) Program — Helps pay Part B premiums only.

3. Qualifying Individual (QI) Program – Helps pay Part B premiums only.

To qualify for one of these programs, in most cases you must have the following: • Medicare Part A; • Monthly income less than $1,337 and resources less than $7,280 — single person; or • Monthly income less than $1,803 and resources less than $10,930 — married and living together.

These amounts can change annually.

Federal law prohibits balance billing or collecting deductibles, co-payments, or co-insurance from QMB individuals under any circumstances. This applies to physicians, hospitals, and other Medicare providers and facilities.

Since you have received QMB status, your doctor’s office should not be collecting any co-insurance and should refund the amounts it has collected since you received the QMB status. It is unfortunate, yet understandable, that many physicians’ offices are not familiar with the differences among the various Medicaid programs. Moreover, some physicians do not knowingly accept patients with them and collect the normal co-insurance when they see a QMB. Sometimes they don’t know

Hospice volunteers make a difference SPECIAL TO SENIOR LIFE Hospice of St. Francis is seeking caring people to become hospice volunteers to provide respite care for families, make friendly visits to hospice patients and military services. Volunteer opportunities are also available in other capacities throughout Brevard County. No previous experience is needed.

Training is provided at no cost to the participants. Volunteers must attend all training classes.

Hospice of St. Francis (HOSF) is a local, independent, nonprofit organization. Established in 1977, Hospice of St. Francis is Brevard County’s first hospice. Pest plant removal benefits the Indian River Lagoon SPECIAL TO BLUEWATER CREATIVE GROUP City of Melbourne Parks staff completed beautification enhancement work along a 2-mile tract of riverfront property on U.S. 1 between Bon Air Avenue and Laurie Street in early May. The Parks crew spent two days on the site where they trimmed trees, removed trash and tackled infestations of Brazilian pepper trees and cogon grass, two of the worst non-native pest plants in Florida.

Scientists consider both Brazilian pepper trees and cogon grass to be among the most damaging and difficult-to-control invasive plants in the Southeast. Brazilian pepper trees are related to poison oak and poison ivy. They form dense thickets that shade out all other plants below their branches. Cogon grass grows in thick mats that are difficult to remove because of the plants’ deep roots and rhizomes that inhibit the growth of all other plants. Cogon grass also contains highly flammable volatile compounds that can exacerbate wildfires.

“Brazilian pepper and cogon grass are at odds with native plants because they have no natural predators or parasites to limit their development,” said Steve Graham, Certified Arborist/ Parks Manager for the City of Melbourne. “Consequently, they grow into healthy, aggressive swaths of alien vegetation that usurp the space

and soil where ecologically functional native plants would otherwise grow.”

Where these invasive species have been controlled along the lagoon, native plants such as railroad vine, gopher apple, necklace pod and native bunch grasses have begun to thrive.

“These native plants are welladapted to the sandy, dry and infertile soils that slope to the lagoon, growing in concert with the prevailing climate and soil,” said Graham. “Over time, they create a more stable ecosystem that is better capable of filtering pollution from stormwater runoff.”

In addition to invasive plant removal on city-owned properties, the City of Melbourne is working on numerous projects to help improve the health of the Indian River Lagoon, including muck removal, construction of stormwater treatment systems, street sweeping, and homeowner education and outreach. Consider the basic steps of an exorcism. First you must become mentally prepared to go through whatever mental and physical pain it will take to achieve your desired result. Oh, that sounds like exercise.

Second you must begin a ritual which will cause every cell in your body involved to scream in pain as you work toward your desired result. Oh, that sounds like exercise, too. Third, you must repeat these procedures regardless of the pain and anguish to your body and mind until you’ve achieved your desired result. Wait a minute, that sounds more like exercise than exorcise!

There are two easy ways to drive from Brevard to Sanford.

Take Route 528 west to Route 417 north. These are toll roads. Take 417 north to exit 50 then north 3 miles to West Fulton St. Turn right on W. Fulton and go a short distance to N. Park Ave. Turn left on N. Park Ave. At the traffic circle go right. You’ll see the Barbara Lee at the marina. Parking at the Marina is free.

Or take I-95 to exit 223 (Mims).

Go west on Route 46 for 27 miles to Sanford. At Sanford Avenue, make a right and go north for 2 miles to the Monroe Harbor Marina.

I prefer this route, it’s very scenic, light traffic and there are no petty tolls. My measure of success in fitness is if I can still comfortably fit in one airline seat thereby paying only one ticket price, If I ever fail in this endeavor and they asked me why I did it, I’d give them the same answer as Flip Wilson. “The Devil made me do it.” SL

Romance Challenges of Living to Age 100 Ed Baranowski Ever wonder about the popularity of June weddings? After lakes thawed in the North, people had a chance to bathe after a long cold winter. June was the last month a bride and groom might still smell good. Then, there are the birds and the bees. Spring and summer trigger new relationships.

While presenting educational programs at area retirement communities, I notice the eye contact among residents, the smiles, coffee in the lounge, dinner, holding hands, a gentle kiss on the cheek, a proposal and acceptance. Friendship evolves to romantic love at “the home.” A desire for companionship escalates to coupling.

Now, what will the children say?

Plans to move into a single apartment may be impacted by community policies. If married, it is O.K. Co-habiting of unrelated persons of the opposite sex may not be allowed. The joy of companionship, togetherness, love, sparks, and fantasy often are mixed with legal complexities and family concerns. It’s time to put the heart on hold and think rationally.

Pension benefits for a widow may be terminated with marriage, Social Security benefits may be reduced

when married and estate property will need to be protected. Some seniors avoid marriage and live together to avoid financial complications. They want to prevent the merger of assets and protect each of their families’ estates. A trusted estate attorney can create the proper documents, a prenuptial agreement, tenancy in common ownership, life estate provisions and much more. The love nest generates a concern for the nest eggs. The legal issues can surely dull a new romance.

Personal relationships with family members can become strained. This new partner may be loving and caring, but may be eyeing estate resources as a “gold digger.” In the future, who cares for whom? When Joe gets sick, his children may respond, “Dad is sick, let his new wife take care of him.” Another challenge involves children interfering with the care while thinking the new spouse is incompetent. Independent living, assisted living, memory care, general caregiving, and other end-of-life decisions can be muddied or enhanced by two families sharing in the care.

Wise decisions using practical financial tools, writing a plan and disclosing it to the family are challenges that often get side-tracked when affairs of the heart take over. It’s more than a June romance. SL

Rails to trails – hike or bike all you like

Train whistles once wailed along tracks near north U.S. Route 1 in Titusville. The whistles have since faded and the tracks are gone.

Today, we may hear the swish of bicycle wheels or the smack of runners’ shoes, because the railroad route is being repurposed as part of the emerging East Central Regional Rail Trail. A 1.4 mile section between Draa Road and Canaveral Ave., has been completed.

It crosses the new Garden Street overpass, a sleek structure designed to carry bicyclists and pedestrians safely over traffic. The bridge superstructure was lifted into place in early March.

As stated on the City of Titusville’s Talking Points. “The East Central Regional Rail-Trail is a series of bike and pedestrian paths including converted railroad tracks that have been abandoned for years. When completed, the trail will stretch 52 miles from Enterprise to Edgewater in Volusia County, including

Tim Ford, redevelopment planner for the City of Titusville, cited the economic revitalization the project has brought to communities along its route such as Dunedin and Winter Garden. He expects the same, locally.

“It will be an economic driver.

People will walk, bike and hike through the downtown area,” he said.

This process has begun. Combined with downtown Titusville’s historic charm, shops and other amenities, Ford said the emerging trail is already attracting visitors. He cited the example of a Michigan couple who started their hike across Florida in downtown Titusville. SL “It is transforming the city,” City Manager Scott Larese said of the trail project, “These things are changing the whole economic dynamic of our city.”

‘Secrets, Sins & Revenge’

BY MARY BROTHERTON The author of “Secrets, Sins & Revenge” stated that after reading an unsatisfying novel and telling his wife he could write a better book, she challenged him to do so.

The 73-year-old Micco resident fought his computer challenges to meet his wife’s challenge and wrote a self-published novel, which he has sold locally. He said the copy he donated to the Brevard County library system remained on the reserved list for three months.

I was eager to read “Secrets, Sins & Revenge” after reading the author’s statements.

The book is set in Barefoot Bay and the author refers to many well-known landmarks, which lend realism to his work of fiction. His characters are believable and most are convincingly flawed.

Though the book is rife with all the components that make editors and literature buffs cringe, “Secrets, Sins & Revenge” is an intriguing story. The editor inside me fought the urge to correct the clichés, incorrect punctuation, weak language and tense jumps as well as the correctly spelled but misused words and I plowed through the timeline that rocked from present day to the past and back again.

Despite the errors, the book held my attention and I continued reading because I wanted to know “Whodunit.” The book begins in “a picturesque adult retirement

community nestled on the East Coast of Florida,” then slams the reader into an evocative murder mystery to be solved by the small town chief of police, a man with his own haunting past. Ray Barrett fights hangovers and his own demons as he strives to solve the first murder in what had been considered a safe neighborhood.

If you don’t mind typos and an omniscient view, you’ll enjoy “Secrets, Sins & Revenge.” The author does a remarkable job creating a fictional setting while using some of south Brevard County’s familiar sights. SL

And he is right. The value of real experience is irreplaceable and in the “quest to digitize and automate education, we are neglecting the development of many human capacities that matter most.” We need to turn off screens and get outside!

But when talking to a friend whose grandson is autistic, the valuable role of technology in facilitating the development of human capacity presented itself.

Her grandson is 11 and had spent his life locked inside his body, unable to communicate. That was until his family found out about the use of communication boards and iPads. His life was transformed. With the use of technology, he can now participate in conversations, share his thoughts and make his feelings and wants known. Technology was a miracle for the family.

So technology is not all evil for human development after all.

Dr. Frederick Muench wrote in his blog for Psychology Today that “specialized and everyday technologies [like mobile apps and virtual reality applications] can improve our lives” and if we look at technology as an accessory to living, we can see the benefits and argue in favor of apps.

As I found out, technology can even get us closer to nature. Yes, there is an app for that!

In fact, many applications will help you learn about the natural world. Students honored for their recycling efforts SPECIAL TO SENIOR LIFE

The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast (LWVSC) awarded students from Southwest Middle School and Tropical Elementary School plaques to display at their schools for their work in recycling.

Stone Magnet Middle School and Roy Allen Elementary School have been accorded honorable mention status in the program.

The Recycling Awards Program challenges students to come up with innovative ways to further implement recycling and to educate others on why recycling is important to our environment.

Doreen Archer and Lucia Watson from LWVSC, Robyn Emison of Brevard Public Schools, and Erin LeClair and Wanda Scanes from Brevard County Solid Waste Management were judges. LWVSC Awards project coordinator Marcia Booth and Brevard Public Schools Resource Conservation Specialist Laura Kandiko attended the ceremony.

LWVSC recognized teachers Dina Casabianca from Southwest Middle School and Barbara Wilcox from Tropical Elementary School for their leadership roles.

travel Sea, sand and ships: 12 days on the North Carolina coast most highly decorated battleships in the American fleet. It takes us nearly a half day to see the exhibits, explore the decks, and listen to the recorded stories of the men who lived in the cramped quarters, worked in the engine room and fired the giant guns.

We’re still in a sober frame of mind as we head toward Southport, a charming community not too far from the North Carolina-South Carolina state line. During the 1500s when the British were settling Carolina’s northern shore, the Spanish were exploring the future state’s southern coast. Today the area is equally well known as the filming location for the Nicholas Sparks’ movie “Safe Haven.” How times have changed!

Finally we get to Caswell Beach.

Off to the left is Old Baldy, the oldest existing lighthouse in North Carolina.

Right behind us is the Oak Island lighthouse, the newest and most southern lighthouse in the state. And in front of us, in the Atlantic Ocean, is the spot where the historic blockade runner was discovered.

— Adam Wagner, Star News, March 7, 2016 It’s been decades since one of these ships was discovered, so this is a very big deal.

No, we won’t be able to see the wreck — it’s still buried under 18 to 20 feet of ocean — but as we read more, we realize how important the sea was to the growth of America. The United States was settled by seafaring people during the 16th century, blockaded and bombarded from the sea during the 19th and a major port during the 20th.

We have a lot to explore between beach outings.

We time-travel back more than 400 years by going to the Outer Banks near the North Carolina-Virginia state line.

Here, not far from the Bodie Island Lighthouse, is Roanoke Island Festival Park, which features a full-size replica of a British merchant vessel. In 1585, seven of these vessels sailed to the New World in order to claim territory for England. The waters were so hazardous that the area is often called “The Graveyard of the Atlantic.”

“A big part of navigating is going the direction the wind wants you to go,” says a sailor, authentically outfitted in 16th-century garb.

A man standing next to me grins.

“Seems that the history of America was written by the wind,” he says. Point well taken.

Near the ship is a small Algonquian town, replete with longhouse and dugout canoe, that shows what the mariners found when they followed the wind across the ocean. A few steps farther and we see a representative English village, where a blacksmith and woodworker explain how the first settlers lived.

The North Carolina coast encourages folks to enjoy the sun as well as the historic sites.

175 miles south. Today costumed docents give tours of nine historic buildings and discuss daily life during the Colonial period.

Of course, living on water’s edge is both a blessing and a curse. Beautiful?

Absolutely. Dangerous? Definitely.

Having learned during the War of 1812 that their young country was vulnerable to attacks by sea, the United States government rushed to build forts along the Eastern seaboard. But for North Carolina, the enemy came not from across the Atlantic but from across the Potomac. When the Civil War broke out, the Confederates quickly occupied Fort Macon, which is surrounded on three sides by water. They held the fort for nearly a year, until April 1862 when they were forced to surrender.
