Our mission at SelfMadeHero is simple: to publish ground-breaking and beautiful work by authors and artists from across the globe, from the quirky and humorous to the political and profound. We are proud to bring readers illustrated narratives that provoke, entertain, inspire and inform. Spring 2014 sees the release of a brilliantly original book by Pixies frontman Black Francis. Illustrated by The Guardian’s Steven Appleby, The Good Inn is an inventive and vividly imagined piece of illustrated fiction set in early twentieth-century France. The release of Abel Lanzac and Christophe Blain’s acclaimed political satire, Weapons of Mass Diplomacy, adds to our list of prize-winning books in translation, as does Reinhard Kleist’s The Boxer, a moving biography of holocaust survivor and champion prizefighter Harry Haft. Spring also sees the release of LF Bollée and Philippe Nicloux’s masterful history of the founding of Australia, Terra Australis; the second in our Art Masters series, Vincent, Barbara Stok’s captivating portrait of Van Gogh’s time in Provence; Lovecraft adaptor I. N. J. Culbard’s first original graphic novel, Celeste; and The Cigar that Fell in Love with a Pipe, a collaboration between David Camus and Nick Abadzis, starring Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth. We love to hear from our readers, so be sure to let us know what you think @selfmadehero

“A

book based on a soundtrack score that has not yet been composed for

a feature film that does not yet exist.” Pixies frontman Black Francis has approached writing his first book as he would do a song: with eccentricity and imagination. The Good Inn tells the story of an eighteen-year-old known only as

Soldier Boy who, after escaping a devastating explosion at the French port of Toulon, sets out on a bizarre journey across France. Navigating his way past homicidal gypsies, combative soldiers and porn-peddling peasants, he takes refuge at The Good Inn – and promptly finds himself centre stage in the making of the world’s first narrative pornographic movie. Black Francis is the frontman of cult US rock band Pixies. His songs have inspired musicians from Thom Yorke to Kurt Cobain. Josh Frank is the author of the Pixies biography Fool the

World. Steven Appleby is a cartoonist for The Guardian newspaper. The author of over 20 books, he has also worked in TV, radio and musical theatre.

aris, 2002. Arthur Vlaminck lands a job as a speechwriter for Alexandre Taillard de Vorms, the French Minister of

Foreign Affairs at the Quai d’Orsay. Vorms is no simple man.

A refined and driven intellectual, he loves Napoleon and frequently quotes French poetry and Greek philosophy. As the imposing doors of politics and diplomacy swing open, Arthur is thrown into a world of large egos, high stress, and low cunning – and tasked with drafting Vorm’s response to a growing international crisis in the Middle East. Spanning the run-up to an invasion, Weapons of Mass Diplomacy is a revelatory account of a period that saw French fries dubbed “freedom fries” and French people damned as “cheese-eating surrender monkeys”. Abel Lanzac, a pseudonym for Antonin Baudry, is a diplomat and former advisor to French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin. Christophe Blain is an award-winning artist and writer. He won the ‘Best Graphic Novel’ award at Angoulême for Isaac the Pirate.

ust over 225 years ago, one of the most incredible odysseys in human history took place. 1,500

men and women were crammed aboard 11 ships and transported to the other side of the planet. They were

criminals, outcasts, renegades: the scum of England. Having travelled over 24,000km, across three oceans, they arrived at the country that was to be their new home. For some, it was a one-way trip to hell; for others, it proved an unexpected chance of a new life. Bollée and Nicloux’s 500-page masterpiece is a meticulously researched, perceptive and sympathetic account of the birth of Australia. Laurent-Frédéric Bollée is the author of over 40 graphic novels. Fascinated by Australia, he began working on Terra Australis in December 2007. He lives in Versailles, France. Philippe Nicloux has illustrated numerous graphic novels. He lives in Nice, France.
