Social trendS keep Mickala connected Pelley stays in the loop with the latest social trends by staying connected with her friends. By: Kaitlyn Nathem [Staff Writer] She logs onto the computer and within seconds she is already connected to Facebook. She checks her phone and has received a text from Twitter, saying that Snooki is having a great day! Just last year though, she would have been busy searching for the latest Myspace codes or changing her top friends. Just like most other students in Marion High School, sophomore, Mickala Pelley, has followed the standard social network changes. Starting off in middle school, most kids were contacting each other through Myspace. Changing layouts, commenting on people’s profiles, and searching for the latest music were the main obsession that kids focused on when they were on the site. “I loved changing my profile and making it look cool!” Mickala said. Myspace was the first major social network that students in our generation started to widely use. Myspace began to fade for most students when they went into high school. Writing on people’s walls, tagging people in photos, and updating statuses on a regular basis were the best and most used parts of Facebook. “[I use Facebook] to creep on other people.” Laughed Mickala. Most students and sometimes-even parents use Facebook as a way to stay up to date with other people’s lives. Seeing who’s in a relationship with who, what so and so did yesterday, and who has been writing on so and so’s wall blowing up on everybody’s news feed. Facebook is still relatively popular for most Sophomore, Mickala Pelley, logs onto her computer to socialize students. with her friends, and stay connect through social networking Twitter is the next big thing, it’s already widely used by most people. “A lot of people don’t like Twitter. I like Twitter, I just wish there was a like button.” Twitter is mainly used for people to talk about their problems in a “status” form. Most people complain about life, talk about what they’ve doing every second of everyday, or have conversations back and forth to each other. Instead of having friends on Twitter, you have followers. The students have followed a trend in what social networks they use. “Depending on what someone uses effects what other people use,” Mickala stated. Students are followers to each other and almost always have been. If one student uses Myspace then soon almost the whole school has it, just like what has been happening with the other social networks. People follow social trends. “First it was Myspace. Then Facebook. Then Twitter.” Most people have been following the same trend, even though some have not gotten too attached to Twitter. Before she goes to bed that night, she checks her Facebook one last time to see her notifications. She has two, a photo comment and her best friend just wrote on her wall. She checks them both and then logs off. Lying in bed she receives three texts, all of which are from Twitter. She tweets to her followers and says “good night.” She will be back on soon enough tomorrow.

Technology: solutions or more problems? By: Jordan Hansen [Opinion Editor] Texting furiously, the teen is oblivious to everything around him. Texting his way down the hallway, he sees nothing and is not paying attention, and he runs into an unsuspecting teacher. Not that this has ever happened in our school, but it could. In fact, some people are wondering if there is a limit on which to put on technology its self. N a t h a n Deeney, junior, Nathan Deeney, is very into junior

technology, and quite knowledgeable about it. He, like many Americans, sees many benefits of technology. “A lot of technology is user-friendly, it only takes a couple of days to learn it.” Technology is used by almost everyone, everyday. It saves people, can solve problems, and can even help with education. High-tech education is definitely up-and-coming at Marion. “I think we have enough [Technology], but the performance is the problem,” said Nathan. “I don’t think it would be a bad idea, but money would be an issue.” Though the benefits of tech far outweigh the problems with it, massive problems with it do exist. In today’s society it is extremely easy for people to say mean things about others, and

Life without technology Commentary Every day, every hour, every minute, every second someone is using technology around us. In one day you might be on the computer to check your Facebook, Twitter, or any of the other communication sites out there. Then you use your cell phone more times you can count to talk, text, and to maybe even get on the Internet some more if you have one of those fancy smart phones. To top it off, you might even play some video games or watch TV in your spare time. We use technology in our lives more than we By: Hannah Miller realize. [Design Editor] Technology is a part of our lives and we depend on it more than we think. We use it to communicate with others, in our work at jobs or school, to have fun, and in pretty much of every aspect of our lives. Technology makes life interesting and just plain easy. Without it we would be lost. It would take hours to do something that might be done in minutes with the technology we have right now. We take technology for granted and need to realize that without it life would be much harder than we think. Technology takes over every aspect of our lives and I bet most of you wouldn’t be able to live a day without it. Just think about everything that you use that is considered technology. That’s your cell phone, iPod, computer, video game systems, even your refrigerator or dryer. Technology is pretty much everything you use in a day that uses some kind of electricity. Life is full of it and you couldn’t do most of the things you do in your day without it. The next time you are using technology just think about what life would be like without it. Try to imagine what your day would be like if you didn’t have all the conveniences of today’s technology.

spreading rumors is easier than ever. “[Technology] is bad when it’s used to spread rumors or say bad things about people.” Along with high schools, technology is also used in many colleges and universities around the United States. According to a survey by the North Central Regional Education Laboratory, (Also know as the NCREL) 90% of all schools have internet access, yet nearly 30% of teachers surveyed said they only use the computers one hour a week. Even more alarming is the survey also discovered that 40% of the teachers never used them at all. Technology has infiltrated its way into sports as well. New training methods, instant replays, and many other advances in sports medicine are now commonplace. “It’s all about the sports,

but new equipment is nice,” commented Nathan. With all the advances, it is a debate whether sports are more about the natural talent of the athlete or about their high-tech training program. These new programs, and also gym classes are using more technology to tailor workouts to student and athletes strengths and the areas they need to improve. Marion, with its grant, has changed much of its physical fitness program to be more beneficial to the students health. This, among many other changes, will hopefully lead to more healthy teens. The student apologizes profusely, but its not enough to keep the student from losing his phone for the day. After school, he will get it, but for now, he’s separated from the tech filled world we all live in.

More convenient options bring down video stores Redbox and Netflix are movie rental services that are becoming very popular across the globe. They are a very cheap and easy way to get movies at your own house without spending a lot of money, but they may be the thing to wipe out movie rental stores. By: Tylar Jansen [Activities Editor] Today there are becoming more and more Red Boxes and people ordering Netflix. Stores like Block Buster and Family Video are starting to become a last option in movie renting. The ease and cheapness of the new movie places are very convenient. They make it very easy for people to get movies. Both businesses, when created put the thought of ease and need into their customers lives. Red Box is a move system where people can rent movies for a dollar a night, and the boxes are at many gas stations, stores and even fast food restaurants. Blockbuster has recently developed a system where people can rent movies through them on ON Demand which is a very easy way for people to keep their business with them as a company and they also have a way where people can rent movies through the mail.

Another simple movie system is Netflix. It is a way where for about eight dollars a month people can order movies online that are sent to peoples’ houses and it only takes two to three days to receive your movie in the mail and there are never any late fees. There is a way one can order movies from Netflix from their game system for example the Wii also watch movies on iPod. They can just click which movie they want to watch and it comes up right there on their TV. Now it’s a very cool, easy way to enjoy movies with friends and family but people have been talking about the movie stores losing business. These stores are very handy as well for people who are close to them. So is the movie-rental world just to these new inventions or will we see these businesses around start stepping up to the new and improved ways of renting movies at home.

New movie rental inventions may be the new and improved way to rent movies by renting movies online or just for a dollar a night at a close gas station or will people stick with going to the stores.

In this day and age everything is being done on a computer. From homework to banking, everything is online, even the everyday newspaper. Many of the newspaper stories are being put online, leaving the regular morning newspaper gradually getting smaller and smaller. So the question becomes, is this a good thing? While some are opposed, having the newspaper online is a good thing. According to world internet usage and population statistics, 77.4% of people in North America use the internet at least once a daily. As opposed to only about 60% of people who read the newspaper on a regular basis. Getting information on the internet is much easier than having to make the it in paper form. Not only is it an extra cost for the consumer to have to buy the newspaper, but it is also a waste of paper. Wasting paper seems to be a big issue these days and having the newspaper online will be one less stress on the environment. After getting the paper, a person will most likely read the parts that interest them, and then throw the rest of it away, With the newspaper online it is as easy as to just look up the part that interests you and then read it; no more shuffling papers around. People may argue that the newspaper in paper form is easier to handle, in reality if part of the newspaper wasn’t online, the newspaper would be much bigger and harder to handle. Having the newspaper online does have its advantages and disadvantages, as many things do. All in all, having the newspaper online is a great idea and should be taken into consideration and used in place of the regular newspaper.

Some schools across the world are now using iPads as textbooks. It’s a good idea and really cost effective in the long run. iPads run for about $750 each. This may seem like a lot, but the iPads would only have to be purchased once. The only exception to this would be if the iPad breaks. Having iPads instead of

textbooks could be used for many things. Instead of just using them as textbooks, they would be a more efficient way to contact teachers if necessary and to turn in homework. Some people are concerned that the students would be distracted from their studies on the iPad because they would be able to use it for other things besides studying and learning. Another con to having iPads in schools is the cost. Since one iPad is over $700, some schools are worried that the money that would go towards the iPads could be used for other things like teacher training or for other ways to improve student education. There are many pros to using iPads in schools. One of which is the weight. Students practically break their back because they have to carry textbooks around all day. If a student has a textbook for every class, and no time in between to stop at their locker, that means that the student would have to carry around all four heavy textbooks all day. The weight of the book depends on the thickness obviously, but

the weight could become a huge problem. If all school textbooks were on the iPad, students would only have to carry that around all day and weight of books wouldn’t be a problem. The iPad weighs a little less than two pounds; so having to carry that wouldn’t affect the student at all! Another advantage would be that if a student had to take their homework with them somewhere to do, they have to worry about keeping track of lots of things. If a student wanted to go do homework at the library, instead of carrying a huge backpack full of textbooks, notebooks, and folders that take up an entire table for their things, they could just carry the iPad with them and take up very little space. Schools all around the world are testing the idea of having iPads in schools. Whether it would be good or bad, it would be a great idea to test it out in every school with only a few students at first. iPads in classrooms will be a huge step up from textbooks and will cost more money to begin with, but they will be an overall great thing to have.

Losing what’s really important What it’s like to go without technology By: Casey Burns [Features Editor] So, it’s the night before I have no phone, no computer, no iPod, nothing. I am texting everyone I can and doing everything possible on Facebook before this horrible thing happens to me. Not sure how this is going to end, but I am really hoping I am able to stay sane. I have some plans already that I made in advance so I have SOMETHING to do while I have no social technology life. It’s almost 1130 and I only have a half hour left. Better get back to my phone and laptop before I am out of time. DAY 1 9AM: So I woke up this morning wanting so badly to check my phone, but I couldn’t. The alarm went off, and that’s all I could use. I saw I that had six new text messages, and I couldn’t even look to see who they were from. I’m not sure what I’m going to do. 10:30 AM: Haven’t looked at my phone yet, and it’s so tempting. I keep feeling vibrations, and it kills me not to view my messages and reply to them. I don’t know if I will be able to do this for five days. We will see. 1:15 PM: So I am at Hanah’s house, and she is looking at apartments and houses for rent. I can’t really help, so I am telling her what to look for, and she is telling me what she is finding. If there are pictures, I will go look at them, but that’s it. It sucks, but there’s nothing I can do. 3:30 PM: Tessa and Angie came over for a bit and we hung out and ate supper, but still no cell phone. They were listening to music, as I was talking to Grandma trying to keep myself distracted. 6 PM: I just came home because it sucked that I couldn’t do the same things as them. Man, this is tougher than I thought. 10 PM: I have cleaned my room and organized all of my

Being totally wrapped up in what you are doing and keeping your eyes glued to a screen seems to be a problem with everyone. New technology has been rapidly rising and the steady improvements have kept people wondering what is going to be next, and how they are going to make things better than they are now. When it come to the advances and students wanting more, there comes a time that people need to just be satisfied with what they have and not think they need to have the best thing out there. Every few months, something new comes out and people go ballistic over it. They go to the Internet, to do a Google search of the device. People look to see all Casey Burns, of the features it offers, what Feature Editor is good about it, and if they really want it. If it’s something of even more interest, the individual will most likely go out and buy it. I have a hard time with thinking that I need something new. The new iPhone is coming out within the next year, and I really want it, just because it’s new, it’s going to be in style, and there is new technology that would make life a lot easier. However, people in today’s society are so focused on the materialistic things, that it’s not making our society any better. I have learned to be satisfied with the things that I have and not want more. It sucks to know that the things wanted aren’t the things needed. With being a senior, it’s good to start thinking more into the future and going to college and getting a place to stay, not what’s going to be in style for the next six months. No matter what people have, it will never be good enough in today’s society, because new things will be seen and new advances will come out. People should be satisfied with what they have, because if they aren’t, they won’t be happy at all.

stuff. Now I am going to bed. There’s nothing else I can do without wanting to do something I shouldn’t. DAY 2 11 AM: I can’t do this anymore. Everyone has their phone out and I don’t have mine. I have nothing but this pad of paper and the pen that’s in my hand… 2 PM: Going to pick Chet up in an hour, and there is no way to get a hold of him, or anyone to hang out or do something. I have to talk to them personally and make plans that way and hope that the plans are still on. VHS to DVD’s to Blu-ray: what’s next for entertainment? By: Hannah Miller [Design Editor] Remember back in the day when people wanted to watch a movie they had to get out the enormous black VHS tapes? Now it’s a compact discs called DVDs that take much less space, but wanted more. Now the DVDs are available in Blu-ray and even 3D! The things people can do now a days to movies is endless, but do we really need them all? Society is all about technology and the next biggest thing. It started with movies just being invented. They were first seen at the theaters, then people wanted to be able to watch movies at home, so VCRs and VHS were invented. VHS took up a lot of room. DVDs were then created and are now seen more than VHS’s.

Texting malfunction By: Claire Nash [Staff Writer] Typing a text message to her friend, it reads, “OMG I absolutely love this class!” The friend receiving the text message reads it and responds with, “Really?… You love algebra 2A? R u crazy?!” This is a perfect example of a text miscommunication error which is when; the receiver doesn’t understand that you are being sarcastic. Its extremely hard to see emotion in a text. When talking to someone you see a person’s facial expressions and listen to their tone of voice, if it’s through texting, they can’t. Not understanding a text a text happens all the time. There are many reasons why someone might not comprehend a text message. Lost of people do not use punctuation or correct spelling when texting each other. Sarcasm can

This made way for newer more hipper technology. Now most people prefer to watch movies on DVDs. There are many different things that came from DVDs. Blu-ray DVDs are now one of the big things. They make the movie experience better with excellent screen and sound quality as well fun interactive information and games. Movies in 3D are no longer the biggest thing in movies. It started just in theaters, but now the experience can be seen right inside people’s houses. Upgrades in viewing of movies is great, but how far can movie viewing really go? It’s wonderful that technology has made so many strides in the way movies are viewed as well as made, but people will always be pushing to see how far they can take technology

and see what else they can do. After awhile there’s only so much they can do and people need to realize that movies are movies. Everyone will always be open to better screen quality and better sound, but mostly people just want to experience a movie for the story not the way they watch it. From VHS to DVDs to Blu-ray to 3D movies. What’s next, 4D? There is only so much people can do with how movies can be watched and people need to realize that eventually these ways will run out. Inventors will always be thinking and pushing for new ways for people to experience movies and everyone will just have to wait and see what’s next. It could be next year or it could be ten years from now, but no matter how long, inventors will always be pushing new ideas at people that they know will buy their items. It’s up to the people to say how far their ideas will go.

Tuetken wrestles for himself, his team, and his school Kaleb Tuetken has enjoyed his wrestling season so far with his entertaining team mates, who always are striving for a victory By: Kaitlyn Nathem [Staff Writer] He moves his feet quickly to the left, and now to the right. His arms reaching out at his opponent’s body. His opponent pulls him to ground, but he quickly flips around and now has his partner in an uncomfortable position. Flipping him on his back, he holds him there as the ref lays down eye level to the ground counting time. “1…2…3…” Kaleb Tuetken, senior, is a varsity wrestler. Starting wrestling as a sophomore, Kaleb enjoys the winter sport. “I love wrestling! It’s so much fun,” he said enthusiastically. Wrestling is a sport that can often be filled with

aggression, perseverance, and determination. The sport isn’t only about winning or losing against another person. Kaleb has set goals for himself this season, which would be, “to work hard in practice everyday, to win a dual-meet, and to get top three in a tournament before the end of the season.” Hopefully, those goals are reached. Wrestling has a very different point system than most sports! “Take down is worth two points. When you get the other person on their back it’s worth three. When someone takes you down but you get back up, it’s worth one…” When a wrestler pins a person the team receives sixteen points, but if the time runs out before anyone is pinned then whoever has the most points wins the team

Hornback prepares for another great season of tennis By: Jordan Hansen [Opinions Editor] Smack! The little green ball sails over the net, and bounces once on the opponent’s side, who hits it back. The game is on. Brandon Hornback, sophomore, is part of this years tennis team. Though this will only be his second year of playing for a team, he’s very familiar with the sport. “I have been playing for a little over six years, and I also play through the USTA,” said Brandon. The USTA (United States Tennis Association) creates tournaments for many amateur tennis players across the United States. Through these tournaments players can achieve rankings, similar to how the system works for pro tennis players. The tournaments are year-round, but he only plays in the tennis season and summer, not indoors in the winter. Besides being in tennis, he also stays in-condition by playing football. Before the season starts, “I run a lot to get into shape, practice as much as I can,” commented Brandon.

Tennis is a sport played by many men and women around the world. Some however, seem to stereotype the sport with out ever playing it. “[Its] stereotyped as being, I don’t want to say girly, but almost for wusses,” commented Brandon. Of the student-athletes that go out for tennis, many have a chance to play varsity. There are six varsity spots, but as the team is young this year, its a wide open race. Some of the returning players from last year include many sophomores, many of whom played last year. Last year, the team made it to sub-state for the first time ever last year. Although they were defeated, they hope to rebound this year with young talent and hopefully have a strong season. There are many meets this season, and a chance for Marion to prove themselves at each one. This year, they will hopefully have more support from the schools students. “Support the tennis team!” Brandon states clearly. As they hit the ball back and fourth, the last set gets more and more intense. Finally his opponent makes a mistake, and the ball sails past him. As soon as he sees his opponent miss, he raises his racket in victory. Another great win for the tennis team, our school, and Brandon himself.

three points. “You want to score as many points as you can, but I usually go for a pin,” stated Kaleb. In order for the team to place well, it’s important to get as many points as possible. Making weight is a very difficult part of wrestling, but is also a very essential part. Kaleb luckily hasn’t had the greatest problem with making his weight. “…I had mono and lost eight pounds. I haven’t quite gained it back yet. It’s harder [to make weight] for others though.” If a wrestler doesn’t make weight they’re not allowed to wrestle at the meet. “You have to work extra hard in practice to try and lose water weight, and wear layers of sweat pants.” He said. For some wrestlers making weight is an extremely difficult task. Wrestling isn’t always serious, but it can be very fun when enjoying the sport with friends. “[My favorite wrestling memory is] ‘duck ball’ with Scout and London Morehouse,” Kaleb laughed. Another one of Kaleb’s favorite parts of wrestling would be winning. “Winnings fun. Losing sucks!” Outside of wrestling it’s a fun time, but as soon as he hits the mats he’s completely serious and striving for the win. Being a senior, Kaleb is hoping to go off to college. “I’d like to wrestle [in college], but I probably won’t .” He’s pushing himself to become the best wrestler that he can be now. Districts will determine who goes onto the State Wrestling tournament February 16th through the 19th. As the whistle blows, he releases his opponent from the ground. He stands and looks at the crowd of people watching his victory. The ref grabs his arm and lifts it in the air. He wins his match and rests before he takes on his next victim.

The band starts to play, the stage lights turn on, and the crowd hushes. “Is the play they’ve all been waiting for about to start?” They think to themselves as their anticipation builds. The curtains open and the first scene of Marion’s spring play Sally Potter begins. Jake Putnam, senior at Marion High School, plays Rye Bread, the parody of Hagrid, in Harry Potter. “Rye Bread is a fun character… it’s a big part and I get to use a funny voice,” says Jake. This is the third play Jake has been in while in high school and is enjoying it so far. Jake likes to do musical things because you can use it in life after school.

Winter drum line coming to a close, Bacon shares all Bacon gives her thoughts about this year’s drum line experience and what she will miss. By: Logan Tichy [Ads Editor]

The end of the second quarter buzzer goes off. Starting the half time show. As she marches out onto the basketball court the weight of the snare drum rests upon her shoulders. She follows the person in front of her until they stop. She starts playing Indilrad, the new song, and beats her drum at the right time. She is now performing the evening show, Winter Drum line. Bailey Bacon, junior, has been in winter drum line for three years. “[I’ve been playing in drum line sense] freshman year,” Bailey stated. Practices are something that is a must when it comes to drum line. “Sections are in the mornings, and full practice with everyone is on Thursdays. “We normally go over exercises, then go over the performance, and then hang out and bond with each other for a while,” said Bailey. There is a lot of things to do to be ready for a big performance, practice is one of them. Some other things that are needed for a big performance. Hard work, determination, and knowing when to play the right notes are what needs to come together to have an amazing performance. There are many things that Bailey considers her favorites when it comes to drum line. One of them is the new song that they are playing called Indilrad. “ I really like the beat, and it’s new.” She says. Another thing that she likes about drum line is the people and the experience they give her. “I like bonding,

and the performances because I love the people in drum line,” Bailey elaborated. Bonding is one of the many important things that needs to happen in a team event. Winter Drum line is ending fast and Bailey is already looking towards next season. “ I can’t wait tell next season! But I will miss Kylie.” Bailey said with remorse. Next year will come with it’s positives and negatives. She will finally be a senior and one of the leaders in drum line, abut she will also miss a lot of her senior friends. After playing their last note she waits for the people to applaud. Slowly she pivots on her foot and plays and Bailey Bacon, junior, plays the school song on her snare drum during the winter prep rally in the matching tune as red gym last Friday afternoon. Bailey has been in drum line for three years.

Frazier is running toward a new goal for a new season By: Tylar Jansen [Activities Editor] He stares a head at the tack. He’s mentally preparing himself for the run. He kneels down to get ready to the start of the race. Concentrating on winning the event and just doing his best. The shot’s fired and the runners are off. Isaac Frazier, sophomore, was on the boy’s varsity track team last year and is planning on joining again this year. Isaac said, “I’m excited for this year to start because we are going to have a great season with all of the quality runners on the

team.” Isaac feels that all the runners are very good and will bring a lot of victories for the team. He feels that being on the track team is a great past time. “[My favorite part about the team] is going to state after the season and hanging out with all the teammates,” he smiled. He feels confident that this year should be another good year and hopefully a lot of runners will get to go to state. Isaac shared that the worse part about the team is sometimes at practice. “The

conditioning can be really hard,” he said. He added that the wins is all worth it though because it gets everyone prepared for the meets. Isaac started doing track at the high school because he participated in track during middle-school and really enjoyed it. “I don’t run a lot outside of school, but I really enjoy being on the team,” he said. Track for Isaac is a fun sport to stay involved in the school and it helps him stay in good shape. Isaac does the 400 hurdles, shuttle hurdle and the high jump for the team. He really enjoys representing Marion in track and doing his very best. Isaac feels that track is a good sport for anyone, “I’d recommend it because it’s a

Halfmann, senior, can’t wait for spring soccer By: Danielle Tiernan [Editor-In-Chief] She dribbles down the field switching the ball from left to right. As she grows closer to the net she gets even more excited. She finally makes it close enough and kicks the ball towards the net with all of her power. Emma Halfmann, GOAL! She made the senior first goal of the game, she’s excited because she prepared all year for this moment. Senior Emma Halfmann has been playing soccer since she can remember. “[I’ve been playing soccer] since I was able to walk,” she laughed. She started playing so young because her parents wanted her to be involved in sports. “When I was younger my parents were big outdoors people and they always wanted me to get involved,” she explained. Emma has played on the varsity team for a while now, “I’ve been on and off [the varsity team] since I was a freshman.” Although she doesn’t play any other sports at school, Emma is involved in other sports outside of MHS. Emma’s favorite part about soccer is the

she exits the gym. Slowly taking off her snare drum she sets it down in the band room and she is free to go. This marks the end of the drum line season for Bailey. She will be returning to the drum line scene next year for the 2011 football season along with the winter sports season.

fact that she’s always learning, “I like that you don’t know everything [about soccer], you’re constantly learning.” Her least favorite part is not playing at all. “[I don’t like] having to stand on the sidelines and not play,” she explained. Emma used to play indoor soccer, but this year she didn’t. “I used to play indoor soccer, but not this year because of work,” she said. The main difference between soccer at the high school and indoor soccer is that indoors is a little more competitive. “[It’s different] because you’re inside, there’s more passing and working together, and it’s more exciting to me,” she explained, “Also, there’s less rules and more you get more of an adrenaline rush.” Although soccer is just in the spring here at Marion, Emma prepares for it all year round, “I stay in shape by working out and eating healthy.” On the day of a game she spends about 15 minutes working out, “[on the day of a game], I work out for 15 minutes on the elliptical and eat healthy.” This year, Emma has high hopes for the team and herself, “I hope we do really good and I have the best season of my high school career.” Even though there’s still snow on the ground, Emma is starting to prepare for the upcoming soccer season. She hopes the team will have their best season yet.

The boy’s basketball team has had some touch competition this year. Though the seasons isn’t over yet the boys basketball team has worked hard to get where they are now, winning some tough games and losing some really close, competitive games. This didn’t get the boys down. They have came back to the next game with the same pride and dedication. There are many seniors who wont

Movie ratings are changing along with our society Movie ratings are following the trends of society and becoming more lenient. Producers are getting away with more foul language with a lower rating than movies used to have. By: Kaitlyn Nathem [Staff Writer] It’s the weekend and a group of young teens are enjoying a movie at home, eating some buttered popcorn, and drinking an ice-cold glass of pop. Every couple of minute’s laughter is flowing out of their mouths from the hilarious scenes in the movie. As a parent walks into the room, the speakers on the television start to drop the “F-bomb” and the parent is absolutely mortified that this movie wasn’t rated ‘R’ for the foul language. Now-a-days movies are rated quite loosely compared to what they were rated in generations before. In the past, you couldn’t use any foul language in a PG-13 movie. If a movie had any source of foul language or nudity it was automatically rated R. Movie producers can now get away with using the “F” word in a movie about three times before it should be rated R. This change might be because most kids in our generation hear these words around the house, or from their friends at school. Foul language is becoming more and more common in our generations, so it is becoming less of a big deal to hear these words on television. With the words becoming more common, it makes the movie ratings not as tough on swear words as it used to be. Many people may disagree with this, but teens these days are more mature than teens used to be. With this maturity comes a better understanding of the use of language that is needed to portray

certain messages in movies. Teens today can handle the language when it is being said, while back in the day some teenagers would be making a huge deal that a movie just swore. The more mature teens become, the less the movie producers have to worry about teens taking things into the wrong perspective or trying to imitate the movie scenes. Movies can get out of hand with the amount of swear words in them. If parents don’t want their teens watching movies with foul language in it… then they don’t

have to rent or purchase movies with foul language in it. On the back of a movie where the rating is printed, there is also reasoning of why the movie is rated the way it is. If the small print says anything about language, then they shouldn’t buy that movie. It’s a simple way to keep teenagers ears from hearing the words that parents would not want repeated. Parents will be parents and they can decide what their teens can or cannot hear. Movie ratings have become more lenient about the content that is put into a PG-13 movie, and some people have a problem with that. Teens have become more throughout the years, and have been hearing language that arises in movies more frequently at home and in the halls at schools. It’s something they’re used to. If it’s a problem to parents, they don’t have to watch the movie. Movie ratings have changed right along side of the more laid back generations.

Movie rating qualifications: Rated G- Will not contain theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that would offend parents of the child watching the movie. Rated PG- May be slight profanity, brief nudity, and/ or possible instances of violence. No drug use will be used in a PG-rated film. Rated PG-13-May go past the PG-rating of theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements but will not exceed to a rated-R level. Nudity is allowed but will not be used in a sexual manner. Rated R- . May contain adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements. Information obtained from: http://www.mpaa.org

PDA is getting worse Commentary As people walk down the hallways they see many things, like kids at their lockers talking to their friends and teachers surveying the hallways. One of the most noticeable things seen in the hallways is PDA, or Public display of affection. It’s gross, and getting really out of hand. Many people don’t want to see people making out in the hallways. Hallways are for walking in not making out in. How people can be Danielle Tiernan, all over each other at [Editor-In-Chief] school where their peers and teachers can clearly see them? Can they not wait until after school? It’s understandable if a couple is just holding hands and walking to class, that’s fine, but when their hands are all over the other person, that’s a little extreme. Couples who walk each other to class or give a quick little hug is a lot better than making out in the hallways, as long as the hug doesn’t last ten minutes. Seeing people groping each other in lover’s lane is just not something anyone wants to witness. While in school, there should be some kind of rule against it. When people are making out in the hallways, It should be stopped. As weird as it would be to stop it, someone needs to. It’s not fun to feel completely awkward walking down the hallways to a class. Some people would advise to just not, but it’s not that simple. We don’t have very big hallways here so it’s not like a person can just turn away. PDA is worse than ever now, and there should be something done to stop it. It’s really gross and awkward for the people walking by.

Book review: The Hunger Games

Match Maker gets weirder each year

By: Abi Washburn [Staff Writer]

Logan Tichy [Ads Editor]

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a fiction, adventure and a little bit of a science fiction book. The story is set in Panem a futuristic version of North America. After North America was destroyed Panem was formed. Panem is divided up to 12 districts and every year on the day of the reaping a boy and a girl are chosen from each district to take place in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games was created by the capitol, the ruler of Panem, when the thirteen

district of Panem tried to over throw the capitol. The Hunger Games is a game they put in place to remind the other districts what the capital is capable of. The Games set children from ages 12 to 18 as rivals in to an arena to fight until death. Everything in The Hunger Games is televised and gambled on all over the country. Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12, takes her younger sister’s place in the games. The district is surprised but no one objects. After the reaping there is a short time to say goodbye to their families before they are sent to the capitol to fight. Before the games start the competitors try to get as many sponsors as they can by training, being interviewed and doing anything they can to stand out. During her time at the capitol she is being trained to win and doing everything she can to appeal to the audience, even start a romance between her and Peeta, the other competitor from District 12. Her goal is to survive the games and return home to her family in District 12. To do this not only does she have to stay alive but also she has to decide if she is willing to kill others and make her fake romance with Peeta believable. I would give it five out of five stars and recommend it for anyone who wants a good page-turner full of action. If you have read The Hunger Games and like it, be sure to checkout the other books in the series. Catching Fire is the second book in The Hunger Games Trilogy, followed by MockingJay the final book completely the trilogy. The Hunger Games is an excellent book full of suspense and action that people of all ages will definitely enjoy reading.

Personal space has gone right out the door. Going back to the traditional way of life would tell people who really are the closest matches for them. This big of a jump has shocked a lot of people. While filling out the application survey the Mentor for the group was shocked by some of the questions that were being asked. She just couldn’t believe that some of those questions where one there. The Match Maker survey is bound to get more and more personal as time goes on. Simply because people tend to go for looks more, then for the personality that goes on inside of that person. While reading the Match Maker survey keep in mind that the survey results tell them the closest match to their actions, not what they believe in.

Filling out the application survey people are anxious for the next month, wanting to find out who their matches will be. There are many questions that are on this survey, ranging from the belief of UFO’s to what they want their kids to be named. They even have gone as far as what people do with their eyes when they are kissing somebody. These questions keep getting weirder and weirder every year. Two years ago, the questions on the Match Maker survey where about what people believed in and how they lived their life. Things have chanced in the match making world. It doesn’t matter what their favorite food is or that pink if their favorite color. In today’s society many times it only matters what they look like, what gym you belong to, and how much money their families are raking in. These questions have been getting riskier and riskier each year. The questions are even asking people what they want to name their kids when they get older! What ever Kaitlyn Nathem, sophomore, fills out the Match happened to privacy? Maker survey. Results will be given out on V-Day.

Up and coming artists who aren’t yet on the radio By: Naomi Spence [Staff Writer] It can sometimes be difficult to find a new artist with all the different types of music out there. It seems as if they play the same artist over and over again on the radio. While other artist are being obnoxiously over played while other new artist aren’t given the time of day by the public radio stations. So instead of listening

to the same old artist with similar sounding songs over and over again here are some new artists to help switch up your playlist. Chiddy Bang is a growingly popular duo who’s sound is a fusion of hip hop and a variety of different sample choices from other alternative groups including Mgmt and Passion Pit. The UK based group consists of Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege and Noah “Xaphoon Jones” Beresin. The college sophomores met at Drexel college their freshman year and released their first single after gaining popularity in the underground scene called “Opposite of Adults” which was originally released as “Kids” because that was the song by Mgmt that they sampled. The “remix” they created landed them at number twelve on the UK singles chart and put them on the map. They are one of the few rap groups that is able to make a good song worth listening to without excessive use of profanity. Two of their most popular songs right now include The Good Life and The Opposite of Adults. Their latest album The Preview is out now for only eight

dollars. It is sure to be a good investment for any music lovers’ collection. Janelle Monáe is an artist who is very unique. Unlike the majority of young female artists today, she didn’t gain her popularity by selling herself on her “sexiness” or making a one hit wonder. Monáe took a different route. Instead of finding one good song and letting it sling shot her into a short lived rise and fall from fame, she allowed her music to gain momentum organically. well as anticipated. However the but the follow up album, The Android, did a lot better then expected and landed at number 17 on the U.S. Billboard chart. Her sound isn’t easily described and can fall under the categories of pop, funk, soul, dance-punk, neo soul, and art rock, Two of her most popular songs right now are Tightrope and Cold War. No matter what type of music you enjoy you are never limited to the people on the radio.

No school! Time to help out the community for a day. Mrs. Herman, and the Service Learning Group, have thought up of a great way to give back to the community in a fun way. By: Claire Nash [Staff Writer] She’s sitting in her desk chair, just waiting to tell her students about the exciting project, which they get to participate in. The bell rings, It’s time for her Global Studies class, and the students sit down in their assigned seats. She gets up in front of the class and pronounces, no school tomorrow. We all get to do a fun activity outside of school for our community! Mrs. Herman is one of the Social Studies teachers. This is her eleventh year of teaching. She also is the Marion girl’s soccer coach in the spring, and also coaches soccer at Coe College in the fall. “I liked to help out the community as a student, but now you can have a whole entire range of opportunities to help out with, and everyone will get to help.” Said, Mrs. Herman. It’s nice to be able to help out, and it will make you feel good about your self, after your done putting all of your time into it. There are a lot of good reasons for this project. Mrs. Herman said, “Giving kids more opportunities to volunteer, it would open a lot of new doors. Also it would be

fun, and you can get closer with the community! Plus the good feeling of giving back.” This project will take some place in May during the school day. Students will still have to wake up early for the school day, but won’t have to be in class all day. Most students will probably be pleased with this school day. Especially since it will be during 4th quarter which is the last quarter of the school year, and it feels like it will never be over. The service Learning Group is also helping run this activity. They like to call themselves SLG pronounced like slug. SLG’s Logo for the project is “One day in May” said, Mrs. Herman. The Student Learing Group, would like to try and raise enough money to get tshirts for the students and staff to wear during this day in may. But time will tell to see if this project will actually work out. This project has a ton of different and exciting categories to choose from. It has

something for everyone to do! Whatver your into there will be something for you! Here are the following tasks students will be able to pick from; buliding raised gardens for the elderly, picking mustard seed around the parks in the town, planting trees in the community, painting pots for flowers, making blakets for people, painting and makking memory books for the elderly. Also there are other creative activities for helping out the community of Marion Iowa. Whatever catergory a person chooses, they can count on it to be a blast! Also everyone will either be working on activities either inside or outside. MHS hasn’t ever done anything like this. But if it all goes well for the first time, people will be looking forward to it, for years to come. “This activity brings our school together, its something for everyone, it doesn’t matter if you’re athletic or intelligent.” Said, Mrs. Herman. This is something for all students to look forward to. This activity is also going to count for volunteering hours, so students will have a great advantage of receiving hours for their silver cords, that they will receive on

New additions at Thomas Park for 2013 By: Kaitlyn Nathem [Staff Writer]

Thomas Park is going to have a new addition to its playgrounds and trails. The city of Marion received a little over $1,000,000 to replace the parks maintenance shop. The new addition will be a 14,000 square foot area that will house full-time and seasonal park maintenance equipment. The building may start as early as March depending on if all the grants are received on time. Below the maintenance portion of the facility a storm shelter will be built with the help of money from FEMA. This storm shelter will be able to hold about 250 people if there is a tornado or another natural disaster. The shelter will also be used for party rentals and can be used by the public. Same-sex marriage may be outlawed again due to a recent dismissal of three Iowa judges By: Tylar jasen [Activities Editor] Recently three judges in Iowa’s Supreme Court have been dismissed due to their votes for allowing gay marriage rights in the state. Many Iowans are upset over this dismissal because it may be the big step for a re-vote for gay marriage rights in Iowa and others feel it is a good thing because they don’t believe it is right to have this opportunity for those couples. Chief Justice Marsha Ternus and Justices David Baker and Michael Streit

are the judges who loss their seats. During voting, many voters based their choice on the gay-marriage vote and choose accordingly for the judges who voted to allow gay-marriage and voted against to keep them in office for Iowa’s Supreme Court. The reason behind many of these voters is because they didn’t agree with the choices that these three judges had for this right in Iowa. Iowa was one of the first mid-western states to allow gay-marriages which caused a huge controversary across the state. There were and still are many

people who are against this right. There are also people who want this right. Now the voting is and should be only based on the laws and the constitution and that the judges who are voted into stay and being voted on follow both of these. There has been a lot of different rumors around that the gay-marriage right in Iowa may be taken away, but for now the law is staying around until a final decision can be made. The topic is on many different peoples minds and when discussed many different opinions can be seen on the topic. The only thing that

Iowans can do is wait for the decison to be made. In Iowa, the same sex marriage was made legal in 2009 and caused a huge uproar at first with many different sides for the issue. Now that these three judges who loss their seats due to their opinion in the matter has occured many Iowans believe that the right should be taken away. The ruling has not yet been announced to the public on what will happen with the law. A lot of different issues will need to be discussed before the remaining judges can make their decision.

Dukina tells how censoring of web sites helps students stay focused By: Tylar Jansen [Activities Editor] She sat down at a computer in the school’s library to check Facebook and gets an “access denied” message on the Internet browser. After being denied access she tries to watch a video for school but the page ends up being blocked from students as well. She gets a little frustrated but knows that blocked web sites are in the Luba Dukina, best interest for the students. senior Luba Dukina, senior at Marion, has experienced getting a “denied access” message when trying to get on a web page that the school has blocked access. “They censor web sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and some Youtube videos so that way students can focus on their work and not get distracted by the web sites,” said Luba. She believes that the school does it for the student’s sake so they can stay focused on their work.

She feels that the web sites that are blocked are made very aware to the students so no one is surprised when finding a blocked web site. “Teachers let you know what they are and they are usually web sites that don’t matter if we don’t have access to them or not,” Luba commented. She also feels that as long as the school never blocks web sites that can be used for homework the blocking of sites won’t bother her. She doesn’t think the messages are a pain, but they are just here to help. “Sometimes they can be annoying, but they are helpful to prevent students from getting on other web sites,” she added. Luba admitted her annoyance with them but over all doesn’t care or feel they get in her way at school. Luba believes that they are only meant to be good for the students, “It’s good because that way students don’t get on those web sites that can make the computers work slower,” she said. She feels that if everyone could get on these social web sites it would make the computers and internet a lot slower. Another good part about the blocking of certain web sites Luba commented on is inappropriate web sites. She

said that its good for not letting students see some of the nastier web sites out there and these blockings can stop them from seeing anything too bad. She shared that another down side of blocked web sites is, “When you have free time, you can’t get on the web sites that you usually would when you’re at home.” She feels that it would be cool if students could get on these web sites in down time during class, but then agrees that if everyone could students could possibly always be on the social networks. Luba feels overall the sites that are blocked should stay blocked at school because they are not meant to be used during the day because they do not have anything to do with the school day. Luba is sitting down concentrating on her paper for an English class, she types in Facebook and again gets the same “access denied” message. She gets back on Word to finish her paper, almost glad that she couldn’t get on, so she can focus only on completing her work without getting distracted on seeing what everyone else is doing with their lives.

Kindle becomes most popular eReader; Dunkel gets much use from hers Junior Steph Dunkel talks about the Kindle she recieved for Christmas and how she uses it for more than just reading books. By: Storm Bogs [Web Editor] She sat by the tree on Christmas morning, hoping she would find the one gift that she has wanted for so long. This was the only thing she truly wanted. She was pretty sure that it would be there, but couldn’t wait to find it, open it up, and start to use it. Steph Dunkel, junior, got a Kindle for Christmas. The Kindle can be used for Internet as well as reading books. “I use it more for reading books since I have a laptop, but it seems to work better with [the] Internet,” she said. Having wi-fi on the Kindle can have its ups and Steph Dunkel, downs. While the junior

3G Internet is her favorite part of the Kindle, it is also her least favorite part. “[I like the] built in 3G Internet, but it freezes up a lot and you have to restart it completely,” she said. Having to restart the Kindle could be very bad, especially if something important is being done on the Internet. It could also become annoying if it happens a lot. Steph enjoys her Kindle but would rather have the Nook. “The Kindle is black and white so you can’t see pictures and stuff,” she explained. The Nook is in color so the reader is able to see all pictures clearly and in color. The Kindle is also one of the top ranked eReaders available, along with the Nook. She prefers eReaders over paperback books because “they don’t kill trees or waste ink,” she expressed. She usually uses the Kindle everyday unless she has homework or other things that need to be done first. Since the eReaders are still pretty new, not

every single book is available in an ebook form. Every single book will probably never be available in ebook form. “I think for a majority of books you can save money but Amazon doesn’t have all books in an ebook form, so for some books you have out go to a book store,” Steph explained. She seems to read books quicker using the Kindle instead of a paperback book. Steph’s favorite book is One Child, written by her favorite author, Torey Hayden. Steph has purchased about seven books on the Kindle since she has had it. To download books on the Kindle, an Amazon account is required. “Your Amazon account is hooked right up to the Kindle. You can scroll through the books in the store and buy the one you want and it will download straight to the Kindle,” she expressed. Paper copies of books have a little summary on the back of the book that someone can read to

see if they are interested in buying it. With the Kindle, a sample of the book is available for download. This sample is anywhere from a couple pages to an entire chapter long. There is also another way to purchase books for the Kindle. A person can buy books online using a computer or laptop from the Amazon web site. After you buy that book, the reader can use a USB cord and transfer it to the Kindle. Books on the Kindle are usually anywhere from five to twelve dollars, that is about ten percent cheaper than buying books from a bookstore. She gets home from school and does her homework as fast as she can. After her homework is done, she sits in bed and reads her Kindle for hours on end. She finishes the book she was reading, and orders another straight from her Kindle. She is very grateful that she got this awesome gift for Christmas and that she is able to use it often.

As time goes on and new technology hits stores, many people go quickly to have the hot new items that everyone is talking about. Some people have a lot of technology, while other people don’t. Paige Satterly, senior, has a lot of technology to keep her going for a while, but it’s not Paige Satterly, just because she wants it, but senior for her to have it for college. There is a lot of technology being used by Paige and she loves all of them. “I have a Canon Rebel XTI, an iPad, iPod Classic, and for next year at college, I’ll have a Macbook,” Paige said. The things that Paige has are very useful to her everyday life. Paige uses her things everyday and they are used for everything. “(I use them) absolutely everyday. My iPad I use for email, checking Facebook, typing papers, taking notes at meetings, and when I get bored, I just go play my apps. And my iPod has over 50 GB of music and I listen to it in my car and whenever I can. As a photographer, I also use my camera almost everyday,” she explained. There are some things that people can’t live with out and some things that they don’t really need and could go with not having it. “I forgot to mention my cell phone when I mentioned tech, but I couldn’t live without it. We don’t have a house phone so it is my only phone I have access to,” she stated. “[One thing I could live without is] probably my iPad. I lived without it before I had it, and

I could live without it. It’s pretty much a small laptop and I have access to computers all over,” Paige continued. There are few things that we could live without, but there are still some that aren’t needed. A lot of people are addicted to what they have, and can’t go a day without it. “I’m not addicted; I can easily put them down. I just find them convenient. For instance, my iPad is smaller than a notebook, but will store notes for all of my meetings,” she pronounced. Knowing that Paige isn’t addicted to what she has, she can go on with life, and not worry about what she would do with out something. Some people have way too much technology and they don’t know what to with half of it, but for Paige, she doesn’t have too much. “No, I don’t believe so. I just have a good amount. Next year, I may have a little much, but it’ll be rather necessary as an art major,” Paige expressed. Technology was brought into this world to help the people, but it may be hurting us instead. “Both [helping and hurting us]. On one hand, it’s allowing people across the globe to connect a lot easier, but it does make everyone a little colder because of the high demand of the ‘I want it now’ generation,” she commented. With people wanting things when they want it and when they are in style, it can really bring the world down. If people didn’t have technology for a day, or even a few days, they would go crazy. “I would struggle, most definitely, because I do most of my work on or with technology, but I know I wouldn’t suffer as much as some,” Paige said. Technology has allowed Paige to get a lot of things done and for her to do them more efficiently. More technology is going to come out in stores, and Paige will use that to help her later in life.

A TV, some food and pop, it’s the perfect setup for a hard-core NFL fan. Watching games all day and into the night, it’s a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday. Preston Speral, sophomore, is a huge NFL fan and has been for a long time. He goes all out for the players he likes, specifically Brett Farve and Preston Speral, Cedar Rapids native, Kurt Warner. sophomore Although a Minnesota Viking fan, he likes specific players as well. “[I have] lots of football cards, at last count 9,000 some,” said Preston. Along with watching many of the games on Sundays, he also likes to watch the NFL draft and sometimes college football. “[College football is] Ok, but I don’t normally watch it, just mainly pro football.” He considers himself more of a fan of the players, but he likes teams to. Watching the whole game is fun, but for him, the best part of the game is “when the game is real close, the last possession.” The big plays that happen during the last part are usually considered some of the best of the game. However, there may be some problems for long-term NFL fans next year. The league is preparing for a lockout. This is when the players and the owners cannot agree on what the player’s minimum salaries will be. When this happens, the owners usually hire substitute players, often called scrubs. Whatever happens between the players and owners, there will still be football, just not the big-name players that we are used to seeing. We will still see it, and if we can see it, that means were watching it, which probably means were sitting on a couch eating snack food.

He’s done teaching for the day and logs on to www. This is possibly the new way Marion is going to have their students keep track of school work. Edu20.org’s motto is, “The free, easy way to teach and learn online.” This is all what the online web site is. It’s very similar to Facebook.com but designated for learning purposes. You are aloud to have pictures and your own personal blog about you self. There will also be a news feed so that once a teacher posts a homework assignment it will automatically post on your home page. This will making remembering your home work a lot easier every night for students. Mr. Raymond elaborated, “It was discussed by staff that we should have one place where students can go, then have the students make multiple accounts for different classes. This web site allows greater access for teachers, which in return will allow grater access for you and your teachers. It also will allow greater access for your parents too know what you have to do for homework.” This will allow teachers, students and parents to have the access and power to communicate more
