DIALOGUE TRAINING (PORTLAND) PHOTO BY REGGIE MILLER

DEAR FRIENDS, I am pleased to share our 2017 Annual Report, which highlights a landmark year for this organization: 25 years of Seeds of Peace!

Gottschalk and Tim Wilson by his side, created unprecedented spaces for difficult conversations that give way to understanding and respect— spaces we treasure and protect to this very day.

It is remarkable to think about the ways in which our work, our programs, and our impact have evolved over this time.

Of course, our work is far from over, and while we continue to grow, this moment has also provided an opportunity for us to assess the impact our alumni are having.

Our alumni have faced enormous challenges and difficult external realities, and yet are leading change in communities and professional sectors across the world.

It is both powerful and rewarding to know that 76 percent of Seeds we surveyed indicate that they are contributing to conflict transformation.

Their leadership, their commitment, and their passion drive our work. At this milestone in our history, we pay tribute to our founder, John Wallach, whose vision, leadership, and courage paved the way for this remarkable community to thrive. John, with Bobbie

They are the changemakers our world needs. We will do all we can to advance their work, and are humbled by the 33,000 people around the world like you who help us do so. Thank you for your ongoing support.

WHAT WE DO

Seeds of Peace inspires and cultivates new generations of global leaders in communities divided by conflict. We equip them with the skills and relationships they need to accelerate social, economic, and political changes essential for peace.

HOW WE DO IT

Seeds of Peace’s approach focuses on three types of change: personal, interpersonal, and wider societal change. Our leadership development model begins with a transformational camp session in Maine for exceptional young people and educators living in conflict. The program shifts attitudes and perceptions while building respect and empathy. Our approach continues through yearround local programs that strengthen relationships and leadership capacities. We then accelerate the impact and influence of our alumni who are challenging the ideologies, policies, and practices that perpetuate conflict. 4 | 2017 Annual Report

At the 2017 Seeds of Peace Camp in Maine, 374 teens and educators representing 12 delegations engaged with each other across lines of conflict and identity over the course of two sessions. Fifty-six of those teens were returning campers who took part in an advanced dialogue program with a heavy emphasis on leadership development and personal growth. The first three-week session brought participants from India, Pakistan, Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, the United Kingdom, and the United States together to focus on the conflicts in South Asia and the Middle East. During the second two-week session, teens and educators from Maine, Syracuse, New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago engaged each other on issues of identity that drive divisions in the US, including race, religion, power, and privilege. Both sessions allowed participants to build meaningful relationships with peers they would otherwise likely never have the opportunity to meet—while sharing bunks and meals, creating art, competing with and relying on each other in sports, and most importantly, during 110-minute daily facilitated dialogue sessions. In dialogue, campers explored conflict on personal, interpersonal, and societal levels, sharing personal experiencs of conflict and competing historical narratives.

CAMP (MAINE)

Through dialogue and group challenge activities, as well as competitions like Color Games, campers developed trust, respect, and empathy. This in turn drove positive shifts in perceptions and attitudes, as captured in pre- and post-Camp surveys administered by researchers at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. 2017 Annual Report | 7

LOCAL PROGRAMS Seeds of Peace led over 100 local programs for Seeds in 2017, building on the lessons learned at Camp and focused on developing key assets and abilities for emerging leaders engaged in peacebuilding. Select highlights include: • A four-day Mediation and Negotiation Seminar in Jerusalem in January led by Harvard Law School faculty for 36 Israeli, Palestinian, American, and UK Seeds. The program deepened their communication and negotiation skills. • A four-day interfaith camp in Karjat in December led by Indian Seeds for 40 high school students from different religious backgrounds. • A three-day Borders Seminar for 27 Israeli, Palestinian, and American Seeds in April. The program explored the impact of borders on Seeds’ lives. • Three Model United Nations conferences for which over 50 Israeli and Palestinian Seeds prepared throughout the year. The simulations required participants to place themselves in the diplomatic shoes of another country and honed public speaking skills. • Dialogue and facilitation trainings in Maine, London, Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, and Syracuse, attended by over 100 Seeds. • Events in Chicago and Maine which highlighted the power of young people to create meaningful change in their schools. Eleven Chicago Seeds and peers took part in a two-day restorative justice training in February. In March, 28 Maine Seeds attended a youth summit on restorative justice and 37 then participated in Seeds of Peace’s Southern Maine Youth Summit. • A week-long Bayti trip in July to Palestine and Israel attended by American Seeds and designed to provide a deeper understanding of the conflict. • A Basketball Without Borders Camp in August in partnership with the NBA, the Jerusalem International YMCA, and PeacePlayers International. 2017 Annual Report | 9

CONVENINGS & TRAININGS

ACCELERATING IMPACT Alumni form the core of our network of changemakers transforming conflict 10 | 2017 Annual Report

GATHER CONVENINGS & TRAININGS Standing at the crossroads of social innovation and conflict transformation, GATHER initiatives support alumni and also welcome others into the Seeds of Peace network of changemakers. CONVENINGS Convenings offer connection that is hard to find in regions of conflict, as well as the conversations necessary to spark ideas. Fifty-six Seeds helped lead 10 GATHER convenings that engaged nearly 200 Israelis and Palestinians in 2017. Topics included challenges in bi-cultural work environments, coexistence fatigue in Haifa, Palestinian tech entrepreneurship, and the future of binational technology initiatives. TRAININGS Trainings helped Seeds and other changemakers take action by offering skill-building in two critical areas: dialogue facilitation and design thinking. Twenty-one Palestinians and Israelis graduated from Seeds of Peace’s nine-month intensive professional dialogue and facilitation certification course in Jerusalem. Participants engaged in dialogue with each other, while at the same time learning how to facilitate it—and in the process gained a deep understanding of each other’s narratives. Course graduates had the opportunity to facilitate dialogue groups at the Seeds of Peace Camp, in addition to convening groups locally.

ACCELERATING IMPACT We invest in high-impact leaders working for change

12 | 2017 Annual Report

GATHER FELLOWSHIP Seeds of Peace worked throughout 2017 with its second class of GATHER Fellows—15 changemakers whose ventures provide creative solutions to challenges contributing to conflict in their communities. The program offered Fellows mentorships, publicity, and investments to help them widen their reach and deepen their impact during months of intense project-building. Regional meetings in Israel, Palestine, Cyprus, the United States, and Afghanistan allowed Fellows to receive feedback on their work from the local Seeds community, and provided them an opportunity to receive further professional training. Fellows also gained access to a small pool of grant money, and participated in online skillbuilding workshops, trainings, and presentations on topics including developing a sound business model and long-term financial sustainability; marketing one’s personal and professional story; and scaling a venture. The Fellowship closed with a three-day group convening in Jordan in May focused on peer learning, reflection, and project sustainability. Fellowship projects include ones that: • brought Arab and Jewish women together to tackle gender injustice • countered divisive political rhetoric in Maine and at the national level • promoted solidarity through music • connected women across borders with mentors in their field • created a safe space for Palestinian youth to learn about environmental conservation Learn more about the GATHER Fellows and their ventures at www.seedsofpeace.org/fellows 2017 Annual Report | 13

Educators play a critical role in supporting Seeds, working in communities to cultivate environments and opportunities that transform conflict. Educators take part in their own dialogue program at the Seeds of Peace Camp in Maine each summer, and engage in year-round activities back home. This year saw the growth of projects at the intersection of the arts and education, as well as one specifically targeted at professional artists who have the potential to inspire and educate. SEEDS OF PEACE CAMP In 2017, 19 Delegation Leaders from the Middle East, South Asia, and the United States engaged in dialogue, developed communication skills, and grew in difficult yet critical ways during the first session of Camp. During the second session, 14 educators from the United States focused on what it means to educate in a diverse democracy. LOCAL PROGRAMS Highlights from regional activities in 2017 include: • a five-day Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR) Course for 18 Palestinian educators from across Jerusalem and the West Bank • year-round daily programs for hundreds of Palestinian children in Gaza through the Seeds of Peace Educator-run Shijaeya Community Project • a five-day Creative Retreat for more than 40 Israeli and Palestinian musicians, visual artists, filmmakers, dancers, and others who explored the role of art in cross-cultural understanding and social transformation • a monthly Israeli/Palestinian dialogue group in Jerusalem for Seed parents and educators; Arabic courses for Israelis; Ramadan iftar gatherings; New Horizon Day Trips; Community Outreach Forums; and summer camps for Palestinian children in the West Bank 2017 Annual Report | 15

SPRING DINNER (NEW YORK) PHOTO BY FRANK AMMACCAPANE

Throughout 2017, supporters raised awareness of and funds for Seeds of Peace’s work. • In May, over 500 attended the 2017 Spring Benefit Dinner in New York City, raising over $1 million for Seeds of Peace programs.

“Seeds of Peace taught me I had a voice that I had to use. Today I use this voice.” — Maine Seed Muna at the Spring Dinner, where she described how she is bringing change to her community.

The evening, hosted by MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, showcased three extraordinary Seeds of Peace alumni who are courageously working for change in their communities. Diane Rehm, host of The Diane Rehm Show, received the John P. Wallach Peacemaker Award for her commitment to honest and effective dialogue. Seeds of Peace also recognized Kiss My Face founders Bob MacLeod and Steve Byckiewicz for their long-time support. • At summer’s end, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski again lent their support during an intimate evening of music and inspiration at the Vinegar Hill Music Theater in Kennebunkport, Maine. Long-time supporter Tim Harrington hosted the event. Attendees heard inspiring stories from Seeds of Peace alumni and had a chance to mingle with the Morning Joe hosts. Joe’s band, Scarborough, capped off the night with a performance. • In October, members of the Seeds of Peace UK community—alumni, parents, philanthropists, and business leaders—came together for a reception at London’s Berkeley Hotel. They heard from United States Ambassador to the UK Robert Wood Johnson as well as three Seeds who help run Seeds of Peace programs in the Middle East and South Asia. The parent of a UK Seed also spoke about his daughter’s experiences at Camp and invited guests to participate in new UK programs and activities. 2017 Annual Report | 19

Seeds of Peace 25th Anniversary Campaign OUR STRATEGIC VISION Seeds of Peace tomorrow

You joined us as we built on our 25-year history, accelerating the leadership of this extraordinary group of young people and educators who are advancing the economic, social, and political changes essential to peace.

Over the next decade, Seeds of Peace will focus on broadening and deepening our core programs, including in the Middle East, a region whose youth represent real change, hope, and promise. We’ll also continue to focus on the GATHER initiatives, an important building block in sustaining relationships with our over 7,000 alumni. Additionally, we’re expanding our new United States Program to address an increasingly fractured American society.

Your investment in Seeds of Peace supports new generations of leaders who have the courage to engage, the skills to transform conflict, and the ability to bridge divides.

These developments require us to significantly increase philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations, as well as earned revenue.

Seeds of Peace was established in 1993 on the principle that while treaties are negotiated by governments, peace is made by people. Founder John Wallach believed that achieving enduring peace requires profound transformation among people, not just transactions on paper.

Our goal has been to raise $25 million during our 25th Anniversary year and create a platform for sustainable growth over the next five years.

Seeds of Peace has an ambitious vision for the future—and we thank you for being a part of it.

As the years go on, we will continue to need your help to make good on our investment in people. Vivek J. Bantwal and Sarika Singh Richard A. Berman Scott and Sabrina Birnbaum James W. and Karen J. 2017 Supporters Planned Giving Your will or trust is a reflection of your values. A gift by bequest through your will or living trust, or a gift through a retirement plan beneficiary designation, will create a legacy of hope and opportunity for future generations. A legacy gift reaffirms your belief that peace is indeed possible and sustainable. Many supporters choose to leave bequests in their wills or trusts. You may also name Seeds of Peace as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, life insurance policy, brokerage or bank

account as a generous way to support our shared vision. As you create or review your long-term financial plans, we hope you will consider creating a legacy of support for Seeds of Peace and the young leaders who are striving to create a peaceful and inclusive future. If you have included Seeds of Peace in your plans, please let us know. If would like to learn how to create your own legacy gift, please contact Lele Levay at (212) 573-8239 or llevay@seedsofpeace.org.
