DEAR FRIENDS, It is with much gratitude that I share our 2016 Annual Report with you, recognizing that together, we are building the better future we all hope for. I am especially proud of the ways in which our programs evolved in 2016 in response to the realities on the ground where our alumni live—and where our work matters most. In the United States, we grew our programming to reach young leaders from New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, expanding the work we have been doing with youth from Maine for more than 16 years and allowing young people to break down stereotypes and prejudices. We are proud to see this program grow and of the leadership these newest Seeds offer to their schools and communities at such a critical time in America’s history. In the Middle East, we convened over 700 Israelis and Palestinians through our GATHER Community
Day events. In South Asia, Seeds ran camps for young Pakistanis and Indians designed to reduce regional and sectarian stereotypes. 2016 also saw us renew our GATHER Fellowship Program with support from faculty at the Social Innovation Initiative team at Brown University’s Swearer Center for Public Service. And we continued our work with faculty from the Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program at Harvard Law School to offer negotiation and mediation trainings to 70 Seeds, including, for the first time, Seeds from the United States. As we turn the page towards our 25th anniversary, I thank you for making the Seeds of Peace experience possible for our 6,389 alumni who are leading change right now. WHAT WE DO Seeds of Peace inspires and cultivates new generations of global leaders in communities divided by conflict. We equip them with the skills and relationships they need to accelerate social, economic, and political changes essential for peace.
HOW WE DO IT Seeds of Peace’s approach focuses on three types of change: personal, interpersonal, and wider societal change. Our leadership development model begins with a transformational camp session in Maine for exceptional young people and educators living in conflict. The program shifts attitudes and perceptions and builds respect and empathy. Our approach continues through year-round local programs that strengthen relationships and leadership capacities. We then accelerate the impact and influence of our alumni who are challenging the ideologies, policies, and practices that perpetuate conflict. Our network now encompasses over 6,300 alumni throughout the Middle East, South Asia, Europe, and the United States uniquely positioned to courageously lead change. DEVELOPING LEADERS Our leadership programs begin at the Seeds of Peace Camp in Maine 6 | 2016 Annual Report
As campers form relationships and gain insights into the issues that divide them, they build greater levels of trust, respect, and empathy. This in turn drives positive shifts in perceptions and attitudes, as captured in pre- and post-Camp surveys.

CAMP DIALOGUE PROGRAM At the Seeds of Peace Camp in Maine, 281 teenagers and educators representing 10 delegations engaged with each other across lines of conflict. A select group of 46 returning campers participated in an advanced dialogue program focused on leadership development and personal growth. MIDDLE EAST SESSION The first session of Camp brought together 158 Americans and Brits, Egyptians, Israelis, Jordanians, and Palestinians. The teenagers were joined by 18 educators from the same delegations who took part in a parallel program. During daily dialogue sessions guided by professional facilitators, campers confronted each other over competing historical narratives, shared personal experiences of conflict, and tackled topics that fuel oppression, hatred, and violence. UNITED STATES SESSION With national attention increasingly focused on divisions in and between communities across the United States, Seeds of Peace launched a new program during the second session of Camp bringing together exceptional youth from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Syracuse, and from across Maine. The program builds on more than 16 years of work with young leaders from Maine who are a leading voice for dialogue and inclusion in schools and communities throughout the state. The 123 United States campers took part in a dialogue program focused on race, religion, economic and educational disparity, and other sources of prejudice and discrimination. Daily dialogue sessions explored the concepts of identity, community, power, and privilege while fostering self-reflection. The program helped campers move beyond the stereotypes, prejudices and mistrust that exist in their schools and communities. 2016 Annual Report | 7

LOCAL PROGRAMS Seeds of Peace conducted over 120 local programs for Seeds focused on key assets and abilities for emerging leaders engaged in peacebuilding. Select 2016 highlights include: • An eight-day ‘Paradigm Shifters’ program in Cyprus for 29 Seeds from the Middle East, South Asia, the UK, and the US designed to further develop their ability to challenge the status quo in their communities. • Two camps designed to reduce regional and sectarian stereotypes and led by, respectively, Pakistani Seeds in Lahore and Indian Seeds in Karjat, for a total of 104 young Muslims (Sunni and Shia), Christians, Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists. • Two multi-day intensive mediation and negotiation seminars held in Nicosia (Cyprus) for Palestinian and Israeli Seeds and in Portland (Maine) for Syracuse and Maine Seeds. The trainings were led by faculty from the Harvard Law School and the founding director of the Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program, Bob Bordone. • Two summits in Portland with leadership from Maine Seeds—the Maine Youth Summit and New England Youth Identity Summit—that highlighted the power of young people to create meaningful cultural and policy changes in their schools.

• A two-day peer mediation and facilitation training for Israeli and Palestinian Seeds held at the Eastern Mediterranean International School designed to provide basic facilitation skills, helping them cultivate spaces for student-to-student engagement during escalations of external conflict. • A one-of-a-kind nine-month intensive Facilitation and Conflict Transformation Course for Israelis and Palestinians held in Jerusalem that certifies graduates as professional dialogue facilitators. 2016 Annual Report | 9

GATHER CONVENINGS Seeds of Peace convened over 700 Seeds, parents, educators, and friends for two GATHER Community Days in Palestine and Israel to recognize the impact our alumni are having in their communities and tackle issues perpetuating conflict. GATHER COMMUNITY DAY PALESTINE In Jericho, the GATHER Community Day highlighted the ways in which Seeds, Educators, Fellows, and other organizations, including Combatants for Peace and Just Vision, are working for change within Palestine. Seed-led panels tackled topics ranging from community empowerment and gender politics to resisting the status quo. The event was attended by representatives from a wide array of organizations, including the Alliance for Middle East Peace, the Office of the Quartet, Israel-Palestine: Creative Regional Initiatives, and the Palestine Liberation Organization. The US Consul General in Jerusalem Donald Blome also spoke to the participants about the vital role of youth leadership as a catalyst for change in the region. GATHER COMMUNITY DAY ISRAEL The GATHER Community Day in Tel Aviv included panel discussions, workshops, and lectures focused on inspiring change and accelerating the impact of initiatives led by Seeds of Peace alumni. US Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro attended the event, along with representatives from nearly a dozen organizations in Israel, including Tsofen, Hand in Hand, Sikkuy, and the Israel Women’s Network. Over 450 participants attended a luncheon highlighting the ways Seeds of Peace alumni are impacting their communities. 2016 Annual Report | 11

GATHER FELLOWSHIP Seeds of Peace selected its second class of GATHER Fellows whose ventures provide creative solutions to challenges contributing to conflict in their communities. The 2016 Fellowship, designed in collaboration with partners at Brown University’s Social Innovation Initiative, provided a platform for 15 leaders to learn the tools of social entrepreneurship and build and advance their projects. The program offered Fellows an individuallytailored leadership development curriculum that provided coaching, trainings, workshops, and media or other public opportunities to showcase their work. The Fellowship launched with a six-day opening convening/accelerator in London focusing on skill-building and relationship building, followed by regional hub meetings in Cyprus, the United States, Afghanistan, Israel, and Palestine, as well as a closing group convening in Jordan focused on peer learning and reflection. Fellows also took part in 11 skill-building workshops, trainings, and presentations offered through Bridge for Billions, an online incubation platform, and were given access to a pool of small venture grants, providing them with seed funding to bring their projects to the next level. Projects supported by the Fellowship include: • A peace incubator creating job opportunities in Punjab, Pakistan. • A project to direct Afghan war orphans and street children away from poverty. • A theater camp connecting Turkish and Greek Cypriot youth. • A musical troupe connecting water activists across the 11 Nile River countries. 2016 Annual Report | 13

EDUCATOR PROGRAMS Educators play a critical role in long-term peacebuilding efforts, and for over two decades, Seeds of Peace has built a network of educators who support alumni at home and multiply Seeds of Peace’s impact through classrooms, schools, and communities. Select 2016 Educator Programs highlights include: • A Seeds of Peace Camp session in Maine for educators from across the Middle East and United States, who then took part in local workshops, meetings, and listening tours back home. • A four-day workshop for American, South Asian, and Middle Eastern Seeds of Peace Educators held in Cyprus that allowed participants to share best practices for working with youth as well as encouraging community and leadership. • A Bara’em Al Salam (“Buds of Peace”) Camp for 53 children in Gaza designed to instill critical thinking, creativity, and social awareness organized through Seeds of Peace’s Shijaeya Community Project. • Visits with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists in the southern West Bank for Jewish-Israeli and Palestinian-Israeli Seeds of Peace Educators. • Monthly dialogue and engagement meetings with parents of Israeli and Palestinian Seeds. • A two-day forum for Israeli and Palestinian artists—musicians, writers, filmmakers, and others—in Jaffa designed to inspire hope and action.

Seeds of Peace celebrated the accomplishments of its alumni at the 2016 Spring Benefit Dinner in New York City. The event was hosted by Daily Show Senior Correspondent Hasan Minhaj and was attended by over 400 supporters who raised $1.1 million for Seeds of Peace programming. Courage, commitment and connection, the themes of the evening, were evident in presentations by the three Seeds who spoke. Each described how their Seeds of Peace experiences have shaped their values, influenced their professional choices, and motivated them to work for change. Hamdi Ulukaya, founder of Chobani and a social entrepreneur, was the keynote speaker. Ulukaya, who has made major philanthropic investments in improving the lives of people around the world, spoke of the walls people build in their hearts and minds that prevent them from understanding those who are different. He praised Seeds of Peace for teaching young leaders to see each other not as opponents, but as fellow human beings who share the same hopes, dreams, and fears. In November, more than 125 members of the Seeds of Peace UK community came together in London for a reception to honor the new class of GATHER Fellows. The 15 Fellows had an opportunity to present their work as social entrepreneurs. The evening raised $50,000 in new support. Throughout the year, from London to New York, Bridges to Peace events raised awareness about Seeds of Peace’s work. Highlights include the largest-ever Bridges to Peace walk in Augusta, Maine, where over 100 Seeds and supporters turned out, and the first-ever walk and fundraiser in Miami. In Kabul, over 1,500 Afghans celebrated Bridges to Peace on the International Day of Peace. 2016 Annual Report | 17

25th Anniversary Campaign OUR STRATEGIC VISION Seeds of Peace Tomorrow In the face of some of the world’s most intractable conflicts, Seeds of Peace gives rise to new generations of leaders uniquely positioned to accelerate the social, economic, and political changes essential for peace. We are now seeking the support of our closest contributors—including individuals, foundations, corporations, and the government—as well as greater earned revenue, so that we can increase our investment in the leadership of outstanding Seeds and Educators. As a result, Seeds of Peace will become a more nimble and high-impact organization. SEED PROFILE
HAIFA PALESTINIAN DELEGATION (1997) & FELLOW (2015)
I was born and raised in Palestine before moving to Norway at age 17 and then Canada at age 19. Growing up during the First Intifada, I experienced the conflict first hand. My childhood experiences, as well as a formative summer as a participant in the Seeds of Peace program, fueled my desire to work with others to achieve lasting peace between Palestine and Israel. I didn’t want others to live through the same conditions that my family and I endured. In 2016, I co-founded the organization Empathy for Peace together with a small group of scientists and community leaders. Our goal is to advance empathy research (neuroscience and social science) and its application to peacebuilding locally, nationally, and internationally. The nonprofit is the brainchild of myself and my good friend Lily Cohen McGregor, who was born to a Jewish family in Cairo. Both Lily and I spent our form-
ative years experiencing the consequences of the Middle East conflict in different and very personal ways. Our journeys led us to a shared worldview and the conviction that exercising empathy to every human condition was the way to bridge ideological divides, prejudice, and injustice—and achieve peace. We are fortunate to have
gained early support from key drivers in the empathy neuroscience field: Professor Simon Baron-Cohen (Cambridge) and Dr. Emile Bruneau (MIT). Our plan is to establish Empathy for Peace as a partner organization that promotes, supports, and collaborates with empathy-based initiatives. 2016 Annual Report | 21

DELEGATION (1999) & FELLOW (2016) I am a feminist activist, jurist, and entrepreneur. This year, I was honored by Forbes as one of the top-50 most influential Israeli women. I am the Executive Director of the Shutafot (“Partners”) Coalition of Feminist organizations for Economic Justice and Employment Equality. Shutafot is a one-of-a-kind Jewish-Arab coalition working on gender injustice in Israel. This issue is paramount to conflict transformation; our intent is to eliminate discrimination and inequality, and to promote coexistence through collaborative action. I am also one of the founders of Layla Tov, a nonprofit that works to reduce sexual assault from Israel’s nightlife. In addition, I am a member of the National Council for Women’s Health and a consultant to the Ministry of Health on eliminating sexual harassment during medical care. In the past, I have worked at the
Israel Foreign Ministry, the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, and served as a facilitator at the educational department of the Association of Civil Rights Israel, conducting human rights and anti-racism workshops for educators and youth. I hold an LL.B. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a Master of Laws from Georgetown University Law Center. My work promoting peaceful and inclusive societies has led to the rescue of over 100 people from violence in the Middle East and North Africa. In March of 2015, I co-led a successful operation to rescue an interfaith activist from the civil war in Yemen, and I continue to assist those who bravely advance human rights around the world. I am the founder and CEO of Bandura, a company I created with Israeli and Palestinian partners, which develops social networking technology to help NGOs connect people from diverse backgrounds and encourage intercultural cooperation. Through my GATHER Fellowship project, I am leveraging the Bandura social network to help NGOs build stronger communities and better engage cross-conflict audiences. Through our fun quizzes and matching algorithm, Bandura pairs people based on their overlapping interests (like soccer), and develops friendships regard-
less of background. New friends can continue building their relationships through games, quizzes, and chat. NGOs and networks can continue to reach their audiences through a custom newsfeed; as members have fun playing and chatting, they are also consuming meaningful content. In this way, NGOs working for peace are able to engage their audience on a daily basis, reach more people, and build more empathy. 2016 Annual Report | 27

EDUCATOR (2014) & FELLOW (2015) Part of the reason I went to the Seeds of Peace Camp was to get out of my comfort zone and meet with and learn from people who I would normally not have an opportunity to meet. I was fortunate enough to have gotten that chance, and after the Seeds of Peace Camp, everything I have done in my professional life completely changed. I am a part of a cohort whose incredible support and inspiring journeys have motivated me. I am the Manager of Delivery and Partnerships for The History Project, an organization founded by Pakistani Seeds that juxtaposes contrasting history textbook narratives and helps youth learn to identify biases and stereotypes. I am responsible for hiring and managing volunteers, identifying delivery partners, curating social media, and conducting impact analysis. My goals with the Project this year are to reach out to
a minimum of 1,000 students in India and Pakistan, develop lesson plans, and conduct teacher trainings with The History Project textbook. I will also conduct interactive sessions with parents to raise awareness and gain visibility via social media. These are important steps for my colleagues and me, and we have big plans for the History Project’s future. 2016 Annual Report | 31
