BY THE NUMBERS Hoop Forum 2016
Our 14th annual Hoop Forum (Dakar & Thies, Senegal) brought together top non-profits, corporations and individuals using sport as a tool for development across Africa. The 4-day event (May 19-22, 2016) took guests on a cultural, food, music and sport tour of Senegal. More than 2,000 guests, SEED student-athletes and alumni, local and international coaches, and spectators enjoyed a balance of elite basketball camps, community give-back events, concerts, cultural activities, networking opportunities and more. This year’s theme - partnerships for social inclusion was highlighted across all activities: NBA Africa’s Basketball Operations team led a 2-day coaching clinic with 47 local and international coaches, a UN Women’s Ambassador held a female empowerment workshop, and top Senegal business, education, and NGO leaders discussed entrepreneurial solutions to youth empowerment and gender equality. Together, we helped to fulfill our mission to invest in Senegal’s youth, and empower communities to support the development of their nation’s future leaders. Photos: © Franck Boyer
LLP FINALS Hoop Forum 2016
In partnership with the NBA and USAID, Live, Learn & Play is an after-school basketball / lifeskills, and job training program that reaches more than 8,000 Senegalese youth annually and 268 local basketball coaches and youth instructors. Students, ages 13-18, receive fundamental skill development and team-based training, and life skills programming to promote greater civic engagement among youth. Additionally, SEED trains and hires local coaches in the program’s curriculum to improve coaching and youth mentorship across the country, as well as providing employment opportunities. The Hoop Forum hosted the 2nd annual LLP Tournament Regional and National Finals. The tournament started with more than 500 studentathletes, and 16 schools across two major cities Dakar & Thies. Champions from both regions met in an exciting showdown set beneath the national monument. Special guests from the U.S. Embassy, USAID, and the Minister of Sport were in attendance, in addition to hundreds of fans from each school participating in the National Tournament Finals. Throughout the year SEED provides trainings for local coaches and youth instructors from regions across Senegal. These coaches are then empowered to activate SEED programs in their communities. In total, 47 local coaches from Senegal and Gambia attended the training seminars and will be able to implement SEED programs in their communities.

- It takes a village to raise a child African Proverb
In 2015 we launched Our Roots: SEED Culture to both highlight Senegal’s beautiful cultures and traditions, while also creating a sense of unity and patriotism amongst our students. This year, our SEED Rise students performed a 2-hour play that paid homage to their roots. The first act was a moving tribute to the millions of slaves that passed through Senegal during the Atlantic Slave Trade. The second act featured dances from Senegal’s diverse ethnic groups. The third act inspired students to set and achieve goals through inclusive programs offered to them. Photos: © Franck Boyer
