“W

hat a bargain grandchildren are,” said comedy writer Gene Perret. “I give them my loose change, and they give me a million dollars’ worth of pleasure.” When it comes to family heritage, grandparents are worth their weight in gold. They serve as storehouses of history and wisdom, helping children see how they fit into a family’s legacy. Christian grandparents also provide a faith heritage that passes from generation to generation. The apostle Paul acknowledged this important role of family elders when he wrote to young Timothy: “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you” (2 Timothy 1:5, NRSV) Quite often in my prayers I thank God for having grandparents like Henry and Revie and parents like Ed and Rosetta for sharing their love and faith in God with me. I am so happy about it, therefore I share my love and faith with my children and grandchildren the same way. Just think...Henry, Revie, Ed, Rosetta, John Sr., Yulonn, John Jr., Jonette, Cameron, Apryl, Jaylyn, John III, Jenniah, Joelle and me throughout eternity, together, with Jesus. What more could I ask for?

Raw Courage to Live the Sanctified Life! (I John 5:4, 5)

Sons and Daughters in Light, God’s Grace to You!

R

eading from First John 5 ignited a flame in my heart as I thought of the Saint’s position and power in Christ Jesus. We are told:

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”

In the original Greek, the word for world is kosmo. The word is used here to symbolize the forces that are antagonistic to the New Life in Christ Jesus. Satan is the head of those forces. It was not easy to be a Christian in Roman Asia. Ridicule, conflict, denial of employment, harassment, and loss of personal dignity confronted the followers of Christ Jesus. We often witness this same thing today. But God told John to remind the Saints that they are born of God. Thus, they overcome the world by living from victory to victory. Born of God means Spirit Baptized and we are called, chosen, and given a new birth as sons and daughters of God. As such, we overcome the world by God’s power. The word overcome is used here in a verb form that means a continuous victory in the midst of a continuous struggle. The word overcome in Greek is to achieve victory in time and for all times. However, we need to display raw courage in face of the demonic of Satan. The Spirit-baptized Saint lives by faith in Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord which makes His victory our victor. Amen! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd

The NAACP, A Help or Hindrance! (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)

T

he NAACP was organized in Chicago on February 12, 1909 by a diverse group of people. Many of the members were part of the Niagara Movement founded by W. E. B. DuBois who fought against injustice towards Black People during the Anti-Slavery Movement. The goal of the NAACP was to fight for Civil Rights for all underprivileged people which included the abolishment of forced segregation, the enforcement of the 14 th and 15th Amendments, equal education for Blacks compared to Whites. By 1921, the organization had more than 400 locations and thousands of members who actively participated in crusades against lawless acts for people of color. Since being organized 109 years ago, how effective has the NAACP been in today’s Black communities? Why isn’t the NAACP more vocal about Black Lives Matter in today’s society? As people of color move forward into the 21st Century, the NAACP needs to reevaluate its goals, especially where injustice for Blacks and underprivileged people takes place. One thing for sure, God has His goal and it is for everyone to be treated equal and saved in Jesus name. Hallelujah!

W

e hear all the time that everyone in church is not saved! But those of us who know a little of the “Word,” know that it says in Hebrews 10:25, “Not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

The “DAY” that scripture is speaking of is the day the Lord returns for His people. There’s a chance that there may be more people outside the church going to heaven than inside the church; that would be awful! I am writing this to hopefully wake up some “Christians.” I believe the Lord wants our heart, and not a resume of what we have done in the church! Don’t get me wrong, your work is very important, but not as important as giving your heart to Christ and making Him the Ruler of your existence. God is not looking for the “perfect Christian.” As a matter of fact, the more tore up you are, the more willing you are to surrender to Him. Ask the lame man (Matthew 21:14), the woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:25), and a host of others in need. Then ask the man with great wealth (Mark 10:22, Matthew 19:22). It’s hard to give away everything; but when you have nothing -- you have nothing to lose. Although we all fall short of God’s glory; His only requirement is that there is first a willing heart! We can’t just be in Christ when we are in need and go on in our own will when things are good. We must need Him constantly, regardless of our situation! So let’s be the best we can, because He sees our hearts! God’s blessing to you,

Peggy LaBon

“MOUNTAIN TOP”

M

ountain Top is a critically acclaimed movie about a lawyer who became a preacher because he heard the voice of God calling him to preach the Gospel of Christ. The movie centers around a small town in an Appalachian community where everyone is not a Christian and some want to succeed by any means necessary. The preacher is reluctantly drawn back into the courtroom by an eccentric old man who hears God speaking to him, telling him things that some of the town people are doing that are not right. Mountain Top is a smart storyline with twists and turns that you don’t see coming. It engages Christians and nonChristians alike in the plot. You can watch Mountain Top on Netflix. I give it a Four Thumbs Up! Great movie!!!

Seal A seal is the mark of God’s promises to the believer and of the believer’s consecration to God. Old Testament priests wore a piece of gold against their forehead, as a seal, engraved with the words “Holy to the Lord.” For Christians, the sign of the cross serves as a seal of salvation. Paul declares, “He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come” (2 Corinthians 1:21-22, NIV).

A Special Morning Prayer At the start of a day, who can tell what a day may bring forth? Cause me therefore, gracious God, to live every day as if it were to be my last, for I know not but that it may be such. Cause me to live now as I shall wish I had done when I come to die. O grant that I may not die with any guilt on my conscience, or any known sin unrepeated of, but that I may be found in Christ, who is my only Savior and Redeemer. —Thomas à Kempis During Labor Day weekend, God, we pray that all our labors, whether big or small in the world’s eyes, will glorify you. Amen.

A Legacy of Faith National Grandparents Day became an official observance in 1978, thanks largely to the lobbying efforts of Marian McQuade, a West Virginian who had 15 children and 43 grandchildren during 60 years of marriage. The purpose of National Grandparents Day, celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day, is threefold: to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children and to help children become aware of strength, information and guidance older people can offer. Grandparents — and, in this mobile society, surrogate grandparents — also serve as examples of how to endure challenges with God’s help. Elders describe how God remains present, faithful and steadfast throughout the years. As Psalm 145:4 (NIV) says, “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.” “No thief, however skillful, can rob one of knowledge, and that is why knowledge is the best and safest treasure to acquire.”— L. Frank Baum

Labor Day

L

abor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers, and Labor Day 2018 occurs on Monday, September 3 (it's traditionally observed on the first Monday in September). It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894.

In the 1870’s Matthew Maguire (Labor Activist) led several strikes most of which were intended to force the plight of manufacturing workers and their long hours into the public conscientiousness. Matthew Maguire has been overlooked as the Father of Labor Day. Maguire led the great strikes of 1886 and 1890 through the AFL and the Carpenters which eventually resulted in adoption of the eight-hour work day on the national Agenda. Though President Grover Cleveland declared Labor Day a national holiday in 1894, the occasion was first observed on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. Retrieved from the World Wide Web August 30, 2018. Patriot Day — a day of remembrance

O

n December 18, 2001, Congress approved a joint resolution designating September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.” It’s a day to remember the more than 3,000 innocent lives lost on that September morning in 2001.

The resolution requests that each year the President issue a proclamation calling on the American people and state and local governments to observe the day with appropriate programs and activities. Those activities include remembrance services, candlelight vigils, moments of silence, and flying the American flag at half-staff. In his 2003 proclamation President Bush said, “On that day, and in its aftermath, we saw the greatness of America in the bravery of victims; in the heroism of first responders who laid down their lives to save others; in the compassion of people who stepped forward to help those they had never met; and in the generosity of millions of Americans who enriched our country with acts of service and kindness.”

A

s a youngster, I imagined heaven as a big, dim room with thick carpet and worried that filling an eternity of days would be boring. I never dreamed anyone shared that concern until I read Sam Storms’ words: “Heaven is not one grand, momentary flash of excitement followed by an eternity of boredom” (One Thing).

So, what is heaven like? Scripture offers only a few intriguing glimpses: Ezekiel’s vision of four fiery creatures and the hem of God’s garment gleaming in rainbow light; Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus, depicting heaven within shouting distance of Hades; Jesus’ mention of many rooms in his Father’s house; Stephen seeing Jesus at God’s right hand; John of Patmos’ view of the new Jerusalem, descending from God. We can’t know exactly what heaven looks like — or how we’ll fill all our “free time”! (Doubtless, worship around God’s throne will be a big and joyous part.) But we know there will be no hunger, thirst, tears, death or pain (see Revelation 7, 21 and 22). All peoples and languages will be included, with healing for all nations. “There will be a new episode of divine grace every day!” Storms writes. Most importantly, Jesus will be there — the Lamb of God, our Shepherd, sheltering us with his presence. For now, that’s all we need to know. —Heidi Mann

HEALTH

NEWS

“HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE”

S

everal weeks ago, a family member was diagnosed with high blood pressure during a routine doctor’s visit. She was surprised and denied having any symptoms at all. Her physician explained that in most cases, individuals may not have symptoms.

The American Heart Association definition, “High Blood Pressure (HBP or Hypertension) is when your blood pressure, the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels, is consistently too high”(2018). High blood pressure, also known as hypertension is often referred to as a “silent killer” because often there are no warning signs or symptoms. Many people don’t know they have it. In extreme cases, high blood pressure can cause headaches, nosebleeds, or vomiting; and high blood pressure can cause serious harm to your heart and brain. When your blood pressure remains high or untreated, it hardens your arteries making blood flow and oxygen to your heart difficult. Consistent blood pressure readings above 130/80 could be an indication that further monitoring is needed and further steps should be taken to control this condition. High blood pressure increases the risks for heart attack or stroke. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 75 million Americans have high blood pressure. There is a higher incidence of hypertension in the African American Communities.
