SBC Bookstore needs your help!

We have all kinds of books to assist you spiritually, but, they are sitting on the shelves in the bookstore holding on to their knowledge. Our main book “The Bible” which includes 1,189 chapters, 31,103 verses and 807,361 words sits there too! Some details about this book are, the longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119, and the middle and shortest chapter is Psalm 117. it is important to know that the number of chapters, verses and words in the Old Testament, New Testament and the entire Bible depends upon the Bible version! The number of books and chapters in most Protestant Bibles will be the same. How many books are there in the Bible? The answer is thirty-nine books in the Old Testament and twenty-seven books in the New Testament for a total of sixty-six books. But each Bible will have a different number of verses and words as the translators try to accurately communicate the sense of the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. The differences should be small. Is it not amazing that God used about 40 authors to write the Bible, and yet the flow of the Bible is consistent and unchanged? It all points to Jesus Christ. The prophecies point to Him. The miracles He performed remind us that He is God. His teachings were amazing, and His control of nature was real. The entire Bible is about Him. It is about our God. Now, you have some facts about this book, support the church bookstore and come buy one, we have all types, versions, colors, fancy and plain. We are open every Saturday 11am to 3 pm.

Ephesians 1: 4-5 states, “Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be Holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will.” Matthew 3:17 states, “And suddenly a voice came from Heaven, saying, ‘This is My Beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.’” Proverbs 16:9 states, “A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.”

T

he above Holy Scriptures remind me that God is still with us. He still has work for us to do and most of all, His Son is guiding us through all the rough terrain of living life on this earth. If your own people will crucify Your Son (Jesus), we (Jesus followers) can certainly look forward to some rebellion from those who think we (people of color) are not worthy. God created us in His image, and we are all the same on the inside. The bottom line is: Change is hard for some, and that’s why we pray for everyone. I want to congratulate America for making JUNETEENTH a National Holiday- - Just another achievement for the hard-working Americans of African descent who didn’t give up on what we know to be our true heritage! This is another victory for God’s people. While we celebrate July 4th, Independence Day (from Great Britain is 1776), we still struggle to be treated the same as other people. We also recognize that the history taught in our schools did not do our true heritage justice; so, the fight will continue. My prayer is that the “1619 Project” acknowledging the slavery concept from the beginning, will be the next big teaching in America. I was told you cannot fix a problem until you admit there is one. The birth, life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus is our Saving Grace, Atonement and Reconciliation back to Him; all we need to do is believe and have faith in Him, change our wicked ways and pray for everyone to do the same. He’s already done the rest. The Lord has His Hands on our Journey!

Be blessed in Christ, Peggy LaBon

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. I Corinthians 3:16, “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”

The answer to the first question is NO! If you have had to cancel or postpone your annual health screening, due to COVID-19, rescheduling your annual health screening is recommended. To name only a few, preventive measures such as mammograms, PAP smears, colonoscopies, laboratory tests, and other health screenings are an essential part of maintaining good health. The pandemic has shifted our attention and focus on COVID-19. It’s easy to forget about staying up to date on our annual health screenings and health issues. This information is intended to help you understand the importance of getting back on track with your regular annual health screenings and physical exams. Your health care provider can help you determine which health screenings are best for you at this time, based on everyone’s health history, risks, and benefits. For Kids: We all want our little ones to be as healthy as possible. Protecting our kids from infectious diseases is more important than ever. Making sure they stay up to date on their vaccines is more important than ever. According to Dr. Rachel Thornton, M.D., Ph.D, “Childhood vaccinations can prevent illness such as measles, mumps, and pertussis”. (Thornton, 2020). Nutrition and exercise should also be included as a part of our children’s overall health management. Psalm 127:3 states, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward.” For Women A PAP smear is when the health care provider collects and examines cells from your cervix. This test can detect certain cancers of the cervix as well as viral conditions. If detected soon, it reduces the possibility of the patient developing cervical cancer. How often you should have this screening will vary based on your age and risk factors. Your health care provider will let you know how often you should have this screening. A mammogram is the use of an x-ray to examine the breast for diagnosis and screening. This test is beneficial for early detection of breast cancer, masses, and other abnormalities. Talk to your health care provider about when to schedule this screening. (CDC, 2020)

13 13

For Men For prostate cancer screenings, there are a few tests used to detect this kind of cancer at its earliest stages: *PSA-Prostate-specific antigen blood tests detect elevated levels, which indicate the possibility of prostate cancer. *DRE-Digital rectal exam is when the doctor performs an exam per rectum to feel for abnormal areas of the prostate. Your doctor will advise you on which exam is best for you and how often screening should be performed based on your age and health history. Please be assured your health care provider is looking forward to helping you manage your health. All health care providers are doing their best to adhere to CDC guidelines to assure patient safety during visits. Ask you provider if a virtual visit is available. A virtual visit allows the doctor and patient to communicate via use of a smartphone, laptop or desktop computer. Scans and procedures must be done in person. Remember to do your best to take care of YOU! 3 John 1:2 states, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” Anita J. McCulloch, BSN, RN

The Flavor of the Gospel “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor?” (Matthew 5:13, NLT).

T

hese words from Jesus might seem strange to us — can salt lose its flavor? But in New Testament times, most of the salt used as seasoning, preservative, medicinal aid and more came from the Dead Sea, where impurities often compromised its usefulness, especially its flavor.

Jesus urges his disciples — including us — to not let the flavor of the gospel be suppressed in our lives. What might do this? Teachings that treat patriotism, prosperity or any other value as equal to Jesus; the tendency to elevate one nation, church denomination, theological understanding or religious tradition above all others; such intense focus on the laws of ancient Israel that we neglect the superseding grace of God. But neither should we force the gospel on people, like overpowering their food by dumping in too much salt at once. As followers of Jesus, we’re the salt of the earth. Let us use his good news to gently season others’ lives with service and love.

“Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible.” Hope Defined

H

oping does not mean doing nothing. .... It means going about our assigned tasks, confident that God will provide the meaning and the conclusions. It is not compelled to work away at keeping up appearances with a bogus spirituality. It is the opposite of desperate and panicky manipulations, of scurrying and worrying. And hoping is not dreaming. It is not spinning an illusion or fantasy to protect us from our boredom or our pain. It means a confident, alert expectation that God will do what he said he will do. It is imagination put in the harness of faith. It is a willingness to let God do it his way and in his time. It is the opposite of making plans that we demand that God put into effect, telling him both how and when to do it. —Eugene Peterson, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

In God’s Hands

I

n Keep a Quiet Heart, Christian missionary Elisabeth Elliot ponders the faith implications of fretting about days to come. “Today is mine; tomorrow is none of my business,” she writes. “If I peer anxiously into the fog of the future, I will strain my spiritual eyes so that I will not see clearly what is required of me now.” And what’s the alternative? Instead of dwelling on times to come, which we can’t change anyway, Elliot recommends: “Leave it all in the hands that were wounded for you.”

Completely Devoted

B

eware of anything that competes with your loyalty to Jesus Christ. The greatest competitor of true devotion to Jesus is the service we do for him. It is easier to serve than to pour out our lives completely for him. The goal of the call of God is his satisfaction, not simply that we should do something for him. We are not sent to do battle for God, but to be used by God in his battles. Are we more devoted to service than we are to Jesus Christ himself?

Reach the Sun

T

he quickest way for anyone to reach the sun and the light of day is not to run west, chasing after the setting sun, but to head east, plunging into the darkness until one comes to the sunrise. … Walk into the darkness rather than try to outrun it. —Gerald Sittser, A Grace Disguised

Friendly Signposts

W

e need friends. Friends guide us, care for us, confront us in love, console us in times of pain. Although we speak of “making friends,” friends cannot be made. Friends are free gifts from God. But God gives us the friends we need when we need them if we fully trust in God’s love.

Friends cannot replace God. They have limitations and weaknesses like we have. Their love is never faultless, never complete. But in their limitations they can be signposts on our journey towards the unlimited and unconditional love of God. Let’s enjoy the friends whom God has sent on our way. —Henri Nouwen, Bread for the Journey
