Ministry News

Mission Statement Second’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.

Giving Thanks for All Things

I

t’s easy to list the blessings in life: good health, family, a satisfying career, a comfortable home. We might even be thankful for things others take for granted such as freedom and clean drinking water, reliable transportation and food enough to eat. Then there are the little things, such as gardens, sunrises, pets and coffee. But what about life’s storms or unanswered prayers? Should we be thankful for these? Loss and hardship remind us of our dependence on God. He uses trials to draw us closer to him, to show us that he is our rock and refuge. In misfortune and grief, we discover God’s comfort and strength. Should we not, then, be thankful for the storms, too?

The Strength of My Heart “My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26).

My Beloved Flock,

O

n September 5, 2014, to my surprise, I received a call from Cedars-Sinai Hospital informing me that they had a heart for my “Heart Transplant.” Mixed emotions griped my inner person.

The thought of removing my old heart and replacing it with a new one was troubling. Soon after, Betty and BaLinda rushed me to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills. On the way, my mind thought of not surviving the surgery, but I went through the night aware of the power of His Spirit present with me as He promised. Through the night of my recollection, I was equipped with the fruit of His implanted character, and His gifts of wisdom and faith. I became a stronger partner in the solution of many of the concerns of family, parish members, as well as my colleagues who were lifting my name unto the Lord. I was broken open to the built up for another step in becoming a stronger saint in the faith. Christ has promised to guide our thinking and to give us His perspective on our problems. Saturday morning, September 6, 2014, arrived without my knowledge, that is, when the surgery was being performed. It seemed in my dream that strange things came into my mind and I didn’t know that the operation was going on at the time of my fresh visitation with the Lord Christ. He took me back to my call and commission as an Elder of the Christian faith. He gave me the blessed memory of the vision of leading me to touch the “Horn on the Golden Alter in Heaven,” just as He did in the beginning of my call back in 1957. I assumed this was during the surgery. This is indeed my journey with Him in a way that was serenely different. By God’s grace, more will come about my experience of what was revealed to me. Heartfelt thanks for the hundreds of sons and daughters across this nation, as well as you, for lifting up my name in prayer then and now. The Word of God, through Asaph in the above Psalm, His strength is the strength of My Heart, and My Portion forever. Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,

Bishop, Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-shepherd

e live in a bountiful world, and we take far more from it than we give to it - not only from creation itself, but from generations of the past, the fruits of whose labor we enjoy with almost no awareness of the pains and perils that attended their toil. Lacking such awareness, we become dangerously proud, hard of heart, with a false sense of self-sufficiency and achievement. Thanksgiving modestly reminds us of how much we owe to forces prior to and outside ourselves; and how much all of us, regardless of station, are in the hands of Providence. Thanksgiving's singular glory is that it is, at once, the most universal, the most religious, and the most democratic of holidays.

“How to Stay Healthy During the Flu Season” To stay healthy during the flu season, Dr. Mark Hyman, a recognized authority in preventive medicine and Chairman for the Institute for Functional Medicine, recommends: Drink Plenty of Fluids, especially warm liquids. Consuming adequate fluids supports all the bodies’ functions, including the immune system. Make soups and broths (from scratch with fresh vegetables is always best) and have them throughout the week. Drink herbal teas like ginger and Echinacea. Keep a bottle of filtered water with you at all times. Avoid concentrated fruit juices and sweetened beverages, as the sugar content is harmful to the immune system. If you do drink juice, dilute it with 2/3 water!  Try a Daily Saline Flush. Along with staying hydrated, flushing your sinuses with mild salt water helps to keep mucous membranes moist which protect you from microbes. Use a neti pot, plastic bottles that come with saline packets when you travel.  Avoid Simple Sugars as much as Possible! This includes sweet treats and desserts, but also the white flour and refined grain products that turn into sugar quickly. Studies have shown that refined sugars can suppress the immune system  Have Protein with Each Meal. Proteins are the building blocks of the body. This includes your immune and detoxification systems.  Add garlic, onions, ginger, and lots of spices (oregano, turmeric) to your meals! Add these to your soups and vegetable dishes, as well as bean dips and sauces. Garlic and onions offer a wide spectrum of antimicrobial properties.  Eat multiple servings of colorful fruits and vegetables. Choose more leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, and cabbage), peppers, sweet potatoes, and squashes. Aim for three to four servings of fruits, and four or more servings of vegetables daily. Get Sufficient Sleep! We all know sleep restores and heals the body. Without adequate sleep, optimal immune function is next to impossible!  Exercise Regularly. Mild to moderate exercise (for approximately 30-45 minutes) helps boost the immune system. Reduce Stress. While stress is a part of everyday life; excessive stress can decrease immune function and make it easier to come down with the flu. REMEMBER to always speak with your physician before starting a new exercise or supplement regimen; this is critical for young children and those with preexisting medical conditions. If you would like to learn more about the upcoming flu season, please visit the Center for Disease Control flu portal at http://www.cdc.gov/features/flu/.

Thank you! By Eric M. Johnson

H

ow can I put into words what the Lord has done for me? He has given me eternal life, Graciously I have belief in Jesus Christ, I'm afraid of nothing for I rest in Him, What can the enemy do to me? Any foe, including my flesh? How can I describe the love that God has embedded in me? The warmth that I receive when another person smiles back at me, It's the love of God through Jesus that shines on these gracious days, Not my will but His Spirit that governs my actions, Keeps me from the stench of iniquitous disease, Upgrades my thoughts so my body is aligned with His Word, Thank you Jesus for waking me up in the morning, For your peaceful sleep at night, Thank you for the food each day which by you all is good to eat, I really give supplication and thanks for health and life complete, But most of all I thank you for the Light for all the world to see, You are ever present, living inside of me, This I Will attest, I will worship only God through Jesus Christ, Forget about the rest, Thank you Jesus for this day, it's been a blessing to me, To walk in the spirit, praise God for life eternally.

Amen.

Hello Family, When I think about what being thankful is about, I usually have a hard time holding back the tears. God does things in ways we never see coming. For Him to pull me closer to Himself through the same medium He's given me a passion for. Yes, I'm talking about youth. Some of the greatest joys of my life are to see young people grow in Christ. God has blessed TIP with a couple new members and it's been amazing to see the growth that the teens are experiencing. I count it all joy to see, and watch the teens in charge of Second Sunday. The growth is evident. I'm thankful for the committed parents who make sure to bring their teens. While there are still mountains to climb, God has blessed Second Baptist Church with an awesome group of teens. We constantly are encouraging them to strengthen their relationships. With God first, then with their parents, families and friends. I look forward to continued growth in each teen. A special shout out to the TIP advisors and also the Parent Booster Club. I’d like to take this time to invite teens who have never visited or teens who have not come to TIP in a very long time to return and be the change you would like to see.

Footprints; from the desert… Proverbs 9 “Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city, Let all who are simple come to my house!” To those who have no sense she says, Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight” (NIV).

T

hese scriptures reminded me of Thanksgiving dinner. We (women of wisdom) do so much to prepare a feast for our love ones. So much care goes into this “Thanksgiving” meal, because we really want them to enjoy this feast. We also add an extra dish or two; (dessert or side dish) to show our love and appreciation. Now what about those less fortunate than us? Someone told me that during the “Holiday Season” there are so many people downtown trying to give to and serve the homeless, there isn’t room for the churches to do their routine service! Imagine if it were like that all year round? I’m told now that this church serves Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners in their own church dining areas, and all who want to can come eat or come serve; a true display of wisdom and compassion. So, whatever you do this “Thanksgiving,” remember to help the less fortunate; and know that they may need help in the summer months too. Loving you from where I am…

Greetings Congregants of Second Baptist Church:

This month we are acknowledging a true pioneer in the gospel music industry. This gentleman has song with an array of gospel greats from Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Fred Hammond, Hezekiah Walker, Donald Lawrence and many others. In addition to touring with several choirs, some of which you may know, he has worked for two major recording labels, Tyscot Records from (1987-1993) and Verity from (1994 - to present date). This great artist is not only a gospel singer, praise & worship leader, he has an instrumental back ground to that stems from the keyboards and the drums; and he is also an accomplished guitarist. On a trip back from the state of Michigan, his soul was called to preach the Word of God; by his mid-twenties, he became an ordained minister. His summoning didn’t stop there. In 1995, while ministering in Ohio, he received a prophetic vision and went forward with the building of a new Fellowship Center. He officially founded the New Life Fellowship Center where he became and remains the senior head Pastor. The church is located in the same area where he had once led a life of crime and drugs. Yes, some of you all may have guessed that this gentleman is the honorable, yet renowned, Reverend Pastor John Prince Kee, (John P. Kee). Yes, Rev. John P. Kee has a great deal of accomplishments and continues to make music, as well as proclaiming the Word of Christ Jesus. Thank you fellow students of the Holy Bible, and I hope you enjoy the reading, and I’ll see you next month. (For more info. www.johnpkee.com) By: Gregory D. Smith
