The Church In All Its Glory, And A Staff Of The Committed

Sons and Daughters of Faith,

I

f you are asked, “What is Second Baptist Church?” First of all, Baptist believes in two baptisms, “Spirit and Water.” Spirit Baptism is being “born again” (from above), a divine work of grace. Water Baptism is a biblical ordinance administered in obedience to God’s Word.

The word “Baptist,” comes from the Greek word “Baptizmo,” which means to submerse; and thus, we believe in two baptisms “Spirit and Water.” Therefore, Second Baptist Church Ministry is designed for congregants to reach out to the community. Established in March 1902, in Monrovia, California, Second Baptist Church received its first Under-Shepherd, Colonial Allen Allensworth, who served until he was mysteriously killed in a motorcycle accident in Monrovia. He was a retired Chaplin who had served with the 24th Infantry (Buffalo Soldiers) in the United States Army. Second Baptist has been blessed with 14 Under-shepherds, the late Under-shepherd George Godfrey Bailey, served for 31 years. This March, we will celebrate the Church’s 112th Anniversary of service in this community. Bishop Wm. LaRue Dillard, who has led this parish for the past 40 years, beginning on January 1, 1974, and his faithful bishopric services have been etched in the archives of this parish. We care for those dealing with grief, divorce, loss of job, hospitalization, terminal illness, and other life difficulties. As Under-shepherd, Bishop Dillard prepared 13 lessons, specially geared towards New Members. These lessons are drawn from the classical Christian Faith and practices, and are the first step toward eternal healing. The broken person behind the cross and the whole person in front of the cross symbolizes we are all broken people and it is only through Jesus Christ that we can be made whole. When one person says to someone else, “Here’s what life in Christ has meant in my life,” the other person then wants to be involved, that’s growth. Therefore, I call for my church Diakonos, Trustees, Teachers, Leaders, and all other officers to stand together and assess both, what SBC Congregants’ are doing well and what needs improvement. If you find a gap in your ability to care for people, or think you can do it better, then go back to the Holy Scriptures for guidance and be healed. Amen! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish UnderUnder-shepherd

noch, Noah’s great-grandfather, lived to be 365. But he didn’t die; instead, God “took him away” to heaven (Genesis 5:24). The reason, according to the Bible, is that Enoch “walked with God.” Such intimate communion with God, said Edward Griffin (1770-1837), “is very fitly represented by two close friends walking together, engrossed with each other, unmindful of all the world besides.” Griffin added: “When two friends thus walk together they keep the same course, and thus are advancing toward the same object. So the [person] who walks with God is conformed to him in moral character. Benevolence reigns.”

The Shamrock This St. Patrick’s Day……..

id you know the Shamrock has a religious connection? The clover was coined the term Shamrock, by the people of Ireland. Saint Patrick, a 5th Century Christian missionary and Bishop of Ireland related the young sprigs on the clover (3 parts) to the Christian Trinity (God The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit).

Take a look at this Shamrock.

What do you see? Let’s witness to those wearing a shamrock this St. Patrick Day (March 17th) as to their understanding of the Shamrock as it relates to the TRINITY.

W

e are entering the season of springtime in most parts of the United States (praying the storms are over back east) and we see the newness of God’s hand’s upon the earth.

This is also the month of our beloved Bishop’s birthday. We will always celebrate this man of God because of what he’s done for us here at Second Baptist Monrovia, California. Ephesians 3:7 says, “I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of His power” NIV. Bishop has taught the Bible in season and out of season, when he felt good, and when he felt bad; when he knew it was time to chasten, and when it was time to reward; he’s been there!!! The scripture above reminds me of Bishop Wm. LaRue Dillard and some of his quotes: “I’d rather wear out for Christ than rust out for the Devil.” “God are “good”; ‘cause’ “is” is just too small.” “Until He comes, I’m serving Christ joyfully.” “There is a heaven and a hell; you can’t miss them both” To name a few. Needless to say this month’s Footprints is all about Bishop Wm. LaRue and what he’s done at Second Baptist to help use be better Christians through his teaching the Word of God, and by the way he lives!! Because you can’t just preach it; you’ve got to live it!!

Happy Birthday Bishop!!

ello SBC Family! Today, I am introducing to some and presenting to others someone that you might not know so well. She is Anita Wilson, who hails from East St. Louis, Missouri.

Anita genre of Gospel Music is considered to be on a traditional level with hints of R & B, Jazz, Pop, and Contemporary. She was discovered by Donald Lawrence, while singing with his choir “The Tri-City Singers,” as well as the Ensemble Group of Donald known as the Company. She recently decided to venture out to start her own project which is titled, “Worship Soul in 2012.” The hit song on the album is, “Jesus Will.” There are other good songs on the album as well. Anita has a phenomenal voice, a gift from God and my prayer is that God will continue to use her to reach others worldwide with her style of singing to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ through music. Amen! For Now, I am out! ~Danielle~

y delving deeply into the Christian tradition they reveal what one theologian has called the “bright sadness” of Lent—that it is not about becoming lost in feelings of brokenness, but about cleansing the palate so that we can taste life more fully. Lent and Easter reveal the God who is for us in all of life—for our liberation, for our healing, for our wholeness. Lent and Easter remind us that even in death there can be found resurrection.

The term ‘scapegoat’ comes from the use of a goat that was to receive the sins of the people and be released into the wilderness. Leviticus 16:10

DVD Movie Review: The Bible

T

he Bible is a miniseries based on the Holy Bible. It was produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, a married Christian couple who doesn’t hold back on their faith, or is ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They let everyone know, who comes in contact with them they are Christians. Praise God! So as we start this Holy Season, with Ash Wednesday just a few days away, let’s watch the “Bible,” and remember what God did for “ALL CHRISTIANS” when He died on the cross. The miniseries can be purchased online from Target for $18.77. Blessings! ~Precious~

“Depression, How Does It Feel and What Does It Look Like?”

M

arch! Springtime! New growth with green leaves on the trees, flowers blooming and freshness in the air. The feelings of hope and joy, watching God creation burst with new growth! But sometimes new seasons in our lives can bring worries, feelings of hopelessness, guilt, helplessness, and depression.

Depression is a common but misunderstood illness; it is not a personal weakness, gracelessness, or faithlessness—it is a common, yet serious, medical illness. You can expect to feel blue when life deals you a blow, but over time your feelings should start to lift. If your symptoms are severe or you just can't seem to snap out of it, you could have clinical depression. Depression can affect anyone, regardless of race, gender, age, creed, or income. Every year more than 19 million Americans suffer from some type of depressive illness. A common myth about depression is that it is “normal” for certain people to feel depressed—older people, teenagers, new mothers, menopausal women, or those with a chronic illness. The truth is that depression is not a normal part of life for anyone, regardless of age or life situation. Unfortunately, depression has often been misdiagnosed in the African American community. Depression is a “whole-body” illness that affects your mood, thoughts, body and behavior. Some other symptoms of depression include: Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings; Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness; Irritability, restlessness; Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, fatigue and decreased energy; Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions, excessive sleeping, overeating, or appetite loss.

Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people. Spiritual support can be an important part of healing, but the care of a qualified mental health professional is essential; the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be. Myths and stigma that surrounds depression create needless pain, confusion, and can keep people from getting proper treatment. Some people try to “self-medicate” through the abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs, which only leads to more problems. Often people want to blame themselves for not being stronger, happier or feeling better. Don't let these false notions stand in your way of getting help. Depression is an illness and it can be treated. You can take steps to feel good every day and improve your health: Get some physical activity every day; Eat a healthy diet that is low in fat, salt and sugar; Limit or avoid alcohol; Build and maintain a strong support system.

But remember, the good news is that, like other illnesses such as heart disease or diabetes, clinical depression is treatable with the help of a health care professional. Live Life Healthy! Jessie Anderson, RN

T.I.P. (Teens-in-Progress) Progress Report By: Amiyah Mayfield & Kori Webb

T

.I.P. (Teens-in-Progress) Ministry at Second Baptist Church is a great place for teens. In TIP, we don’t just get taught lessons, but we have conversations on what we can do as Teens growing in Christ. T.I.P. is a great place for Teens to come and gain a better understanding about Christ and His Works.

But that’s not all that we do in TIP. For example, we go to Church outings and other events. A few things we have done are: A Snow Day Trip to Big Bear and A Valentine’s Day Rally. We can say that while in TIP, we have made a lot of progress, not only in the gatherings held, but in our spiritual life as well. As we move ahead in life, we can all grow and draw closer to God, but T.I.P. helps us have a close relationship with God even when we are young. All in all, TIP is a helpful class. It teaches us how to depend on God and how to grow closer to Him.
