Enjoy Your Freedom

B

ecause many Americans have never known other circumstances, it’s easy to take our liberties for granted. The Israelites knew firsthand the oppression of slavery. Yet when God finally led them out of Egypt, they had problems adjusting to their newfound freedom. Fearful and rebellious, the Israelites grumbled against their leaders, Moses and Aaron, saying they would’ve been better off as slaves in Egypt. Our freedom as Christians cost Jesus his life. But we, too, often find it easier to fall back into sinful habits. In Galatians 5:1, Paul offers this encouragement: “For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (NRSV). We’re no longer bound by sin and death. That “independence” is worth celebrating every day!

“P. P. T. A. the Secret Answer to Your Prayer!” Sons and Daughters of Christ, Grace to You!

M

y mind and heart are open unto the Lord Christ, seeking to help you in your prayer life as you deal with your problems and troubles, seeking to show you what I have discovered about praying victoriously.

When there is a need within for a solution to your spiritual hunger to be satisfied, may I suggest that you desire for your prayer to be a two-way conversation. Try what I did. My desire was to pray unto the Lord in the form of a dialogue with God instead of a monologue. I once prayed sincerely and the only voice I heard in response to my prayer was the echo of my own employing voice. Then one day, my Bible study brought me to I John 5:14-15: “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of him.” I had read the passage before but had never seen the secret I discovered on that day. The Holy Spirit taught me to pray based on this passage. The revelation I received made all the difference for me. He will also give you the insight that will change your prayer life as it did mine. It revolutionized my praying. He tells us to ask in confidence. Confidence is the Greek word for “boldness;” and the Greek word for “ask,” “request,” and “made” comes from the common root in the Greek, “Aiteo,” thus, ask is aitometha. When Saints ask according to God’s will, we know that we have already obtained the request. We, Saints do no not often ask in prayer according to the Lord’s will. Because He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made to Him. The message of these verses ought to force us to reverse our praying time in the presence of the Lord from 90 percent telling God what we need and 10 percent listening to Him, to permitting your prayer to be changed from 90 percent asking to 90 percent listening and 10 percent asking. Thus, prayer power comes through awareness of what the Lord wants us to pray for. Subsequently, I have spent long periods in silence practicing what I call awareness meditation. Amen! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd

Notable African Americans Born in July

J

uly is the month that we celebrate our nation’s birth from Great Britain, a country that first controlled the Thirteen Colonies. These original Colonies in North America got their freedom on July 4, 1776. Therefore, this July 4, our nation will celebrate its 242 nd Birthday as the world’s strongest nation and one of the youngest nations. But July is also a month with birthdays for some famous Black Americans. For example, Thomas A. Dorsey, the “Father of Black Gospel Music” was born on July 1, 1899. He died in 1993 at the age of 93. Leona P. Thurman was born on July 1, 1911. She was the first Black female attorney to practice law in Kansas City, Missouri. Grammy award winning blues musician Willie Dixon was born on July 1, 1915, and was the first to play with a fifteen piece orchestra. He died in 1992 at age 76, and Mr. James Brown, who made Black Americans to “Say It Loud, We are Black and Proud.” His entire catalog of recording was signed to Polydor Records on July 1, 1971. But one important event in July was when Jesse Jackson received 1, 218 delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention on July 20, 1988. Although he did not win the nomination, he did make a significant impact in Black Americans’ history because twenty years later, Americans elected the first Black President of these United States of America. “With God, all things are possible.” Amen!

elcome to the age of the Millennials. This term is defined in part as “a person reaching young adulthood in the early 21st Century”, a new age for a new generation of young people. This technologically fast pace society now provides instantaneous results to anything that you could ask, or think.

So when God says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10), does He really expect that this new generation of believers to “be still? But it is hard for the more seasoned saint to be still, let alone this new generation of “millennials”. Some even question if God is real! In addition, they say if He is real, why does He allow the state of the world to continue to self-destruct? Again, the seasoned saints know that He is coming back for a church without spot or wrinkle (Ephesians 5:7), and nothing will catch God by surprise, HE KNOWS ALL! As for me, when I talk to God it is in the stillness and quietness, and that’s when I hear Him. Since God is invisible, we must not let our senses dominate our thinking. The curse of this age is overstimulation of the senses, which blocks out the awareness of the unseen world. This tangible world still reflects the Glory of God, but you need a spiritual eye to see it. I want to leave you with this: II Corinthians 4:18, “While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (NKJV). Psalms 119:18 “Open my eyes so that I will observe amazing things from your instruction” (ISV). Happy Birthday to Sister Betty Gay, and all of us July babies!!! Until we meet again, Peggy LaBon

R&B crooner, Charlie Wilson, and Hip Hop King of the South, T.I. came together for a feel-good song, “I’m Blessed”. Reminding us all about the things that really matter in life. Charlie speaks of his “fly wife being by his side” and “living every moment, no regrets”. T.I came in with his credit to our Father, “while they were hatin’ on me He done found another way.” I think we may have a summer anthem with this one!

Are you ready to face life’s tests?

In 1979, the government funded a scientist experiment to learn how long humans could live. The scientist concluded that humans can live a maximum of 120 years because it is at this age the body cells stop reproducing and then the body expires. But what the government and scientist failed to realize is that this had been discovered 3000 years go with the book of Genesis. “And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he is also flesh: yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. ~Genesis 6:3) Source: Mechanisms of Ageing and DevelopmentVol.9 Issue 3-4 February 1979, Pages 337-354 Second’s Gazette

God tests a man. Into the flow of everyday life He sends “pop quizzes”–those unexpected trials that show us what we’re made of; that reveal the true quality of our faith and character; that show our willingness to obey Him. Every Man’s Challenge, part of the best-selling Every Man series, will prepare you to obey. It does take guts to stand firm in facing what life throws our way. We need courage to acknowledge our own weaknesses and to change. We need understanding in handling moral dilemmas and family crises. Thankfully, God has given us the strength we need. By His power we can “participate in the divine nature” and triumph over our sins and the temptations and corruption of the world. The forty “exams” in this book, comprised of Scripture, stories, and reflective questions, will give you the necessary tools to draw closer to God and win life’s battles. Used in your devotional times or for personal reflection or group study, you’ll find strength to overcome sexual temptation, learn how to love your wife better, and gain increasing confidence to live as Christ did. In the defining moments of your life, you can obey God and pass the tests that challenge every man.

Alzheimer’s Disease, Let’s Get The Facts! lzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly dethinking skills; and eventually, the ability to perform the simplest tasks. With heimer symptoms first appear in the mid-60s.

5

stroys memory and some people, Alz-

Alzheimer's disease is currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, but recent estimates indicate that the disorder maybe ranked third, just behind heart disease and cancer as a cause of death for older people. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia among older adults. Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning; thinking, remembering, and reasoning, and behavioral abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Dementia ranges in severity from the mildest stage, when it is just beginning to affect a person’s functioning to the most severe stage, when the person must depend completely on others for basic activities of daily living. Scientists continue to unravel the complex brain changes involved in the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. It seems likely that damage to the brain starts a decade or more before memory and other cognitive problems appear. Research suggests that a host of factors beyond genetics may also play a role in the development and course of Alzheimer’s disease. For example, in the relationship between cognitive decline and vascular conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, as well as metabolic conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Ongoing research will help us understand whether and how reducing risk factors for these conditions may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. People with memory and thinking concerns should talk to their doctor to find out whether these symptoms are related to Alzheimer’s or other causes such as a stroke, tumor, Parkinson’s disease, sleep disturbances, side effects of medication, an infection, or non-Alzheimer's dementia. Some of these conditions may be treatable and possibly reversible. Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease can have high costs such as the physical, emotional, and financial effect. The demands of day-to-day care changes in family roles and decisions about placement in a care facility if needed can be difficult. However, becoming well-informed about this disease is one important long-term strategy. Programs are available to teach families and individuals about the various stages of Alzheimer’s and ways to deal with difficult behaviors and other challenges that may arise with caring for a person with Alzheimer’s. Good coping skills and a strong support network are other ways to help caregivers handle the stress of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease. For example, staying physically active provides physical and emotional benefits. Some caregivers have found that joining a support group is a critical lifeline. Facts Surrounding Independence Day (4th of July)

D

uring the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain in 1776 actually occurred on July 2, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain rule. [5][6] After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it two days later on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. Adams's prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress. Historians have long disputed whether members of Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. Coincidentally, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, James Monroe, another Founding Father who was elected as President, also died on July 4, 1831. He was the third President who died on the anniversary of independence. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872; so far he is the only U.S. President to have been born on Independence Day.
