Mission Statement Second’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.

EPIPHANY

Epiphany marks the coming of the Magi, or wise men, to worship the baby Jesus. Because the Magi were Gentiles, Epiphany symbolizes the first recognition of Christ by non-Jews. It’s a reminder that Christ came as the light — and Savior — of the whole world. The traditional color for Epiphany is green, indicating life, growth, hope and eternity. Symbols for the season include a light, candle or star; a crown or three crowns; three gifts; and a globe. In the modern church, Epiphany has become a time to focus on reaching out and “showing” Jesus as the Savior of all people. It’s also a reminder to engage in Christian community and to heal divisions among God’s children.

Second’s Gazette is published and distributed monthly, every First Sunday, to provide the congregation with information about the Church, the Church Family, the Community, and the World. Contact: Secondsnewsletter@gmail.com

THE ANGELIC CHORUS SINGS GOD’S GOOD PLEASURE (Luke 2:82:8-14)

S

ons and Daughters in Light,

“Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth among men with whom He is pleased!” Let these words from the angelic chorus, quoted in Luke 2:14 soak into the love-parched place in your heart. In spite of all that we have done or been, God is pleased with us. Wow! We are His beloved, and we belong to Him. Nothing we can do or say will make Him stop loving us. This is our special moment. God has something to say. Listen! Put the personal pronoun in the familiar words, “God so loved me that He gave His only begotten Son, (Eternal Generation of the Son in the Trinity), that believing in Him, I should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn Me, but that I, through Him, might be saved.” Our hearts leap. God is for us and not against us and His love is unconditional. The deepest and the most exciting discovery I’ve ever made is that life really begins when we let God love us! But not only does He love us just as we are, He also forgives us for all that we’ve done, said, and been. Think about it! We know more than those shepherds knew. We can see the shadow of the cross over the crèche. We know why He came and what it cost Him. The Babe in the manger is also the crucified Lord. “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). He comes to us when we won’t go to Him. Christ came into the world when we least deserved or wanted Him (Romans 5:8). There is nothing we can do to earn His forgiveness, or make Him stop loving us. From the crèche to the cross, from an open tomb to His impelling presence with each of us, we hear His imploring love: “You belong to Me. You are loved and forgiven. I came for you, lived for you, died for you, defeated death for you, and am here now for you.” That’s God’s Christmas gift to us. Unwrap it, enjoy the healing, liberating, motivating power throughout this season. If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31). Amen! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,

Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-shepher

T

errence Williams has been a member of Second Baptist Church for many years. He resides in Monrovia with his wife and family. He serves as Church Clerk, and is a member of the Diakonos Ministry. He graduated from Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, Texas and continued his education at El Centro College also in Dallas, Texas. A devout community man, Terrence was recently elected member of the School Board of the Monrovia Unified School District and is a member of the Monrovia Arcadia Duarte Town Councilman; Monrovia Kiwanis Club; Monrovia School Foundation; Community Mediation Team (CMT); Monrovia Community Coordinating Council; and the MHS Football & Basketball Play-by-Play Announcer. His proudest accomplishments was being appointed to the Diakonos Ministry and being elected as a Governing School Board Member of the Monrovia Unified School District. His Best Mentor is Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard; and Sammie Lee Hendricks (his late Grandfather), Dr. Manuel Scott, Sr. who all set the tone for his footsteps in the understanding of the Bible and the Deacon Ministry...which all originated at the Rose Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas with his grandparents. His role models are his Aunt, Mrs. Philies Lavern Hendricks-Bailey and Diakona Lonnie Stokes. Terrence responded that he uses his influence by helping others with an example of character, integrity, confidence, and my Christian walk and being optimistically positive at all times. He would help the world by being a positive role model. Terrence said that being with his family, walking and watching sports are the way he unwinds. Terrence responds that a surprising fact about him is that he is a southern boy and that is due to his late grandmother, Jimmie Mae Hendricks, who was a Church Clerk and a Grandfather, who was an Armor Bearer. Now that’s how I live! Terrence Dream Super Power is being promoted To heaven to see my family … And knowing I will one day. In closing, Terrence wanted everyone to know that his prayer is to help as many children as he can in his new role as School Board Member. He states, “I pray that God will be faithful to me during my years of being obedient, because I find it a true blessing to represent in this community in a positive and constructive way. I have been a member of SBC since July, 1995, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me!” Congratulations Terrence Williams for being a Second’s Gazette Spotlight Recipient; and may God continue to bless your endeavors.

Diakona Terrence Williams

BLAST FROM THE PAST

The History of the Baptist Church - December 1777 (237 Years Later)

By Apryl D. Harris

THEN

E

ver hear the saying, history repeats itself? The history of the first ‘Black Baptist’ church can be traced to the original church that provided a place of worship for African Americans named, “First Colored Baptist Church” located in Savannah, Georgia.

NOW

The First ‘Colored’ African Baptist Church traces its roots as far back as December, 1777, and is officially designated the oldest African American church in the United States. It was built during the time of slavery and served as a gathering place for Blacks and Whites to meet to discuss change and hope in the community. Considered a historical landmark, the sanctuary and its rooms served as a stop for the Underground Railroad. Air holes were carved in a 4-foot (1.2 m) space beneath the sanctuary floorboards for escaped slaves to hid. The current sanctuary is located in the Savannah Historic District of Franklin Square in Savannah, Georgia, and was built in the 1850s (completed in 1859) by both free African Americans and slaves. The builders made the bricks and built the church after the slaves had labored in the fields all day. The church was the first building constructed of brick and owned by African Americans in the state of Georgia. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property of the Savannah Historic District. As we enter 2014, let’s not lose sight of our history and the courage, persistence, and fortitude of our past brothers and sisters in Christ. Now 237 years later, let’s ALL continue to be vessels of change and hope for ALL who come through OUR church doors.

What will be YOUR legacy at Second Baptist Church?

elcome to the New Year!!! I hope you have some “New Plans;” or at least, keeping up the same “good stuff” you were doing last year.

Bishop tells us to Evangelize (tell of Christ) and sometimes us words! This brings me to what I want to share with you to start off this New Year. In December 2013, I celebrated my recovery clean time (22 yrs), and there are women who were in meetings when I first came and are still coming so I asked a few of them to celebrate with me by sharing cake with me at the meeting (that’s how we celebrate). Anyway, we had a great time and it was awesome to see them again. One of them came to me after the meeting and told me that she had gotten baptized last week! (I was so happy for her). She went on to say that I was instrumental in her accepting Christ and developing a relationship with Him. WOW!!!! If I could tell you about her, you would understand my excitement; but the Lord doesn’t see titles, He only wants our heart. Needless to say, I was very humbled and thanked God for what He has done. It is very important to know that wherever we go, and whatever we do, Christ is with us, because we never know when He’s going to use us, even without our knowledge. Thank you Bishop for showing me how to be a Christian without using words!!! Enjoy your 40th Anniversary at SBC!

Diakona Peggy LaBon

ello SBC! This is a brand New Year, a time to sing “Auld Lang Syne,” which means days gone by. But Auld Lang Syne was originally written as a Scottish poem by Robert Burns in 1788, and then set to the tune of a traditional folk song. It is usually sung at midnight to celebrate the beginning of the New Year. Here’s something that you may not know about this song. It can be sung at funerals, graduations, and as a farewell or ending to other occasions. Auld Lang Syne has been translated in more than 40 languages. So SBC Family, let’s remember the days of old and welcome the new days ahead, and pray that God will continue to richly bless all of us in this year. Happy New Year! For Now, I am out! ~Danielle~

DEHYDRATION

New Year provides new opportunity to improve our health habits; and last year someone requested information about dehydration, so here is some information about dehydration.

Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If you don't replace lost fluids, you may get dehydrated.

Chester Walls Gregory White

Non-Parish Members Erica Batie Barbara Brown Elisa Brown Naha’s Brown Jospeh Brown Jr. Cameron Carter

Dehydration can be mild, moderate, or severe based on how much body's fluid is lost, or not replenished. When dehydration becomes severe, it can be a life-threatening emergency. Drinking fluids is usually enough for mild dehydration, but it is better to drink small amounts of fluids often (use a teaspoon or syringe for an infant or small child), instead of trying to force large amounts of fluid at one time, because drinking too much fluid at once can bring cause vomiting. One can usually reverse mild or moderate dehydration by drinking more fluids, but severe dehydration needs immediate medical treatment. The safest approach is prevention of dehydration by monitoring fluid loss during hot weather, illness, or exercise; and by drinking enough liquids to replace what is lose. You can usually treat mild to moderate dehydration by drinking more fluids, such as water or sports drink (i.e. Gatorade, Powerade, etc.). Electrolyte solutions, or freezer pops are also very effective. Even if you are healthy, drink plenty of fluids every day. Drink more when the weather is hot, or if you are exercising, and carefully monitor anyone who is ill, especially infants, children, or older adults. If you believe someone is becoming dehydrated, call a health care provider before the person becomes dehydrated. Begin fluid replacement as soon before vomiting and diarrhea starts. DO NOT wait for signs of dehydration. Unfortunately, thirst isn't always a reliable gauge of the body's need for water, especially in children and older adults. A better indicator is one’s urine color: Clear or light-colored urine means you're well hydrated, whereas a dark yellow or amber color usually signals dehydration; seek medical attention if severe signs and symptoms occur such as extreme thirst, lack of urination, shriveled skin, dizziness and confusion. For any additional information, please discuss with your health care provider.
