Mission Statement econd’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.

Students, “There’s a good reason they call ceremonies ‘commencement exercises,’” Utah Senator Orrin Hatch once said. “Graduation is not the end; it’s the beginning.” The same is true of baptism. Both events are often approached as an end point reached with relief: “Well, at least that’s done!” With the degree — or salvation — in hand, some people feel no further need for education — or spiritual growth. Just remember: You’re at the starting gate, not the finish line. Well-wishers encourage new grads, “Don’t stop now; you’re on a roll. Even greater things are ahead!” And Hebrews 12:1 (NRSV) urges the baptized, “Run with perseverance the race that is set before [you].” While a diploma bears the seal of the graduate’s school, Christians themselves are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30) and the cross of Christ. To take full advantage of each, we must continue learning and growing.

BACKSLIDING IS A YOKE OF BONDAGE—REJECT IT! (Galatians 5:1-15)

Sons and Daughters in Light! In Galatians 5:1, God commands His saints to:

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage”

R

eligion is one of the most troublesome sources of destructive pressure in the lives of Christians. Why? Because religion is mankind’s effort to reach, please, earn, and deserve God. Presently, you have been directed to study systematically from the book of Galatians and I am sure the teachers are pointing out to you the joy of being in Christ.

In the church world many rites, rules, and regulations are done trying to be good enough for God. They say that by attending worship every now and then, I have done just enough to get by and I have satisfied my mind’s eye in religion for one more week. But the spiritual resources of prayer, worship, praise, study, church activity, and our customs become goals and we feel that we must do them to please God. These things become an end in themselves rather than help to accomplish our true goal of glorifying God in all that we have and in enjoying Him. The context of this study passage teaches that Jesus came that we might have life---abundant life without reservations. The Romans were as religious about their gods and government as the Jews were about the heritage they tried desperately to preserve. When our purpose is to know Him, we no longer must do the “requested” thing, but instead we want to do the very things which righteousness motivates. Jesus sets us free in mind, spirit and action. Now the discipline of discipleship becomes a delight instead of a duty. The pressure is off and our motivation of love is on! There is no limit to the good things we saints can do when love is the motivation. Pray today that your yoke of bondage of stagnation be broken and come alive in Christ. Amen.

Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully

Seneca Village

A

s a community of free black property owners, Seneca Village was unique in its day. It was located in the hilly, rock-strewn woods between 82nd and 89th Streets and 7th and 8th Avenues. At that time it was a long walk to the crowded city. The village grew steadily from 1825, when Andrew Williams first bought three lots for $125. By 1832, about 25 more lots were sold to African Americans. And by the early 1850s, the village boasted three churches, a school, and a population of some 300 people. Over the years, German and Irish immigrants joined the community. This diverse community lived in peace, attending the All Angel’s Church together and sharing the services of one midwife. But as the city pushed north, the media began to paint a different picture of the little village, calling it a “shantytown” and calling the property owners “squatters” who were “wretched and debased.” Many people in the city, including Mayor Fernando Wood, wanted the land for a great new park. In 1855, the mayor used the power of eminent domain to claim the land. Then he sent the police to clear it. For two years the residents resisted the police as they petitioned the courts to save their homes, churches, and schools. In 1857, they were finally removed. As one newspaper put it, the raid upon Seneca Village would “not be forgotten…[as] many a brilliant and stirring fight was had during the campaign. But the supremacy of the law was upheld by the policeman’s bludgeons.” Ref: Retrieved from the World Wide Web July 15, 2018. Mapping the African American Past (MAAP) This entry contributed by Curriculum Concepts International This map (pictured) shows Seneca Village, a largely black community that thrived from 1825 until 1855, when the land was made part of Central Park by the city.

xodus 20:4-6 (NKJV) “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor [a]serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting[b] the iniquity of the fa-

thers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. I read this scripture and I wondered if God included the new “Atlas” men of our generation in the sports world. These superstars are highly revered by millions of people worldwide! Or maybe He was referring to the TV and movie stars we love so much; not to mention the musical artist of all sorts. There are times when entertainment is a good stress relief and it allows us to disconnect from our everyday routines and responsibilities. Even Jesus Himself brought forth a new batch of wine at the wedding (His first miracle). He is for us enjoying this life, as long as we know that we are bought with a price, and our lives are not ours, but Christ who lives in us through His Holy Spirit. With that being said, let’s enjoy this life to best our ability, it will not last forever. However, there is a place that is for eternity, and our job is to bring as many people to Christ as we can. Because there a heaven and a hell, and you can’t miss them both, you’ll end up in one or the other. Until next time, I love you in Christ Peggy LaBon

What Spills Out ?

R

ev. Henry Wingblade once compared the Christian personality to the unseen soup in a bowl carried high over a waiter’s head. No one knows what's inside — unless the waiter is bumped or trips. If Jesus is truly living inside us, Wingblade said, what spills out should be the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When you falter, what do people see? How can your “spillage” better reflect the Holy Spirit, who lives in you?

Who had a staff sprout, bud, blossom and produce almonds, indicating that God had chosen him for a special reason? A. Moses B. Zechariah C. Aaron D. Nathan Answer C. “Great are the works of the LORD!” (Psalm 111:2): long summer days, meteor showers, lakes and forests, time for vacation and rest. Let us worship our generous God.

God's Left Hand 6-year-old and his grandma went for a walk one autumn day. “Look at the gorgeous leaves!” Grandma exclaimed. “Just think, God painted each one of them just for us!”

“Yep,” said her grandson, “and he did it left-handed.” Perplexed, Grandma asked, “Why do you think God used his left hand to create all this beauty?” “Because,” said the boy matter-of-factly, “we learned in Sunday school that Jesus sits on God’s right one.” Second’s Gazette

“Lord, remember me”

T

he funeral of renowned evangelist Billy Graham was a celebration — not of the preacher’s long life and many accomplishments but of his arrival in heaven. Graham, who died at age 99 in February 2018, was confident he’d spend eternity with Jesus but knew the reason wasn’t his own status or actions. Graham knew he was a sinner in need of forgiveness. “I still need the cross,” he said. Graham added, “I am not going to heaven because I have preached to great crowds or read the Bible many times. I’m going to heaven just like the thief on the cross who said in that last moment: ‘Lord, remember me.’”

“I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying.” —Michael Jordan

Unqualified

I

f you’ve ever failed to qualify for something — or been disqualified from something — you know how discouraging it is to not be good enough. Romans 3:12 says we’re all unqualified, or “worthless,” on our own.

Thankfully, “the Lord never calls the qualified,” as author Henry Blackaby noted; instead “[God] qualifies the called.” Jesus chooses and appoints us to go bear fruit for him (see John 15:16), and then he empowers us to do it. Talk about impeccable qualifications! For an insightful video on this topic, search YouTube for Jon Jorgensen’s spoken-word poem “Not Qualified.”

L

ooking back can sometimes bring trouble. A Sunday school teacher was telling about Lot’s wife, who looked back toward Sodom and Gomorrah and turned into a pillar of salt.

Prompted by those words, a boy said, “My mom was driving one day and suddenly looked back, too. She turned into a telephone pole.”

Spirit Buzzzzz! The Earth is Round Americans are taught that Christopher Columbus discovered the Earth was round. However, is was known during the writing of the Bible, thousands of years before he ever sailed the ’ocean blue’. “It is He that sits above the circle of the Earth . . (Isaiah 40:22 NKJV). This verse relates the fact that man, in all his wisdom only discovered thousands of years later, lend credence that the scriptures are truly the inspiration of God. T

he familiar hymn often called “The Doxology” or “The Common Doxology” was written by Thomas Ken in 1674 as the concluding verse of a morning hymn, “Awake, My Soul, and With the Sun,” and an evening hymn, “Glory to Thee, My God, This Night.” The lyrics are appropriate for any time of giving or thanksgiving. Consider using this hymn as your Thanksgiving dinner prayer. Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Some church bodies have altered the words to “The Doxology” slightly, but the overall sentiment — praising the Triune God — remains the same. How profound to know that when we sing it, we join Christians around the world and across nearly 440 years!

here are some people that worry that their name will not be called when the recognitions are given for a job well done down here in this life. Whether it is at work, church, or school, we sometimes feel slighted when they call all the names on the team, and ours have been left out. Especially if we have worked just as hard or harder than those on our team or committee. Are you one of those people that needs human recognition and praise for the work that you do? Is there a part of you that want to be esteemed and noticed by

The Bible says, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you” (Romans 12: 3, NIV). Be encouraged, that no matter if your name is called or not, God recognizes every good thing that you do for the kingdom. He is One that will acknowledge all of the good work. He sees it all and knows everything about each and every one of His children. There are those that refuse to do a work if they are not recognized. They will not sing THAT song, read a Scripture, or PREACH the gospel, or even SHARE their faith, because they will not be seen by the masses. DON’T be that person. Be the person that is working to serve God and others. The times that you believe you should have been recognized but was not, give glory and honor to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and our heavenly Father that you were enabled and empowered to serve! The Bible says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. Since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3: 23-24, NIV). Matthew 6: 1 tells us not to practice our righteousness in front of others to be seen. If we do then we will have no reward from our Father in heaven. Some people are getting their rewards, NOW, by glorifying themselves. When you serve the Lord and serve others from a pure heart, and nobody recognizes us here on earth, our heavenly Father will reward us. God deserves all the glory, honor and praise! He loved us so much that He gave us His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ! Glory belongs to God because of His love and faithfulness toward us. Whatever tomorrow holds, remember that God holds the future in His hands. No matter what your situation looks like right now. Do you recall the old song, “He’s Got The Whole World in His Hands”? That’s you and me Sister, and you and me Brother, in His hands. He’s got the sun and the rain, the moon and stars, the winds and clouds, the ocean and seas. God has this current President in His hands. He has everybody here in His hands! God has it all in His hands, that’s why He deserves, Honor, Glory, and Praise! There are those on the East Coast who are suffering because of the flash floods, and those on the West Coast who are suffering because of the wild fires. Some have already lost their homes, and in some instances their whole community. There are some of you that may be mourning the loss of a loved one. There was a Duck Boat incident in Branson, Missouri, where 17 people, including 5 children died. In the Bay Area three sisters were attacked and one died as they were helping a lady with a stroller get out of the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train. It was an unprovoked attack by a man that was a parolee. All around us may be chaos and confusion, but we are thankful that Our God is not a God of confusion, but of love, peace, and order. It may be difficult, but we can still give all honor and Glory to our God He will take care of His children through the storms of life. Our faith and trust is in Him. Hallelujah! Glory to the name of the Lord! God Bless and Keep You All

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28, NKJV “No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye, you were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, as God calls us one by one the chain will link again.” Martha Jean Williams was born in Tchula Mississippi on Monday, October 6, 1945, approximately 9:00pm. After a period of suffering she departed her life on Saturday, June 30, 2018, in La Verne, California. She was the fifth child born to the union of the late Norman and Mae Ida Woodson. She was given the name Martha from her Paternal Aunt. She gave her life to Christ at an early age, and joined Second New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Tchula, Mississippi. Her favorite scriptures were Psalm 23 and Romans 8:28 and her favorite hymn was “Because He Lives.” She relocated to Peoria, Illinois where she completed her high school education and was in employed with Caterpillar Tractor Company in 1968. While living in Peoria, Illinois she met the love of her life Charlie F. Williams, who lived in Chicago. They were united in Holy Matrimony in 1975 and she relocated to Chicago with her husband. Charlie and Martha would have celebrated 43 years of marriage this year had she lived until July 12th. She continued her employment with Caterpillar Tractor Company after relocating. Due to employment opportunities the family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and in 1980 moved to San Dimas, California due to job promotion of her husband. The Good Lord navigated the Christian pilgrimage of Martha Williams and Charlie to unite with the Congregants of Second Baptist Church, Monrovia, Ca., on January 1, 1984, under the biblical watch-care of Bishop Dr. Wm. La Rue Dillard for the past thirty-four years of earthly sojourn. Martha has been a faithful steward of Time, Talent, and Treasure helping to advance the ministry to children in the nursery department as Director which she loved and enjoyed dearly. Martha labored untiringly with fervent prayer asking the Good Lord’s guidance in her chosen, gifted ministry of love, care, and devotion to children, as well as the Diakona Ministry, and United Women Fellowship Guild. Additionally, she participated in the Annual Gabriette Choir. Martha continued her education and received her AA degree in Science from Citrus College in June 1991. She was employed by the Bonita School District, Ramona Middle School and La Verne Heights Elementary AfterSchool Age Care for seventeen years. During her tenure she served faithfully, diligently, as a Mom, instructor and counselor. The children called her, “MRS. MARTHA. She loved her, “BABIES”. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grand-mother, Great Grand-mother, Sister, Aunt, and a friend to many. Martha was the “glue” that held her family and friends together. Martha loved the birds that she cared for in her home for many years. She loved to travel with her husband and enjoy life. She retired from Bonita School district on June 1, 2018. She possessed a humble spirit and a quiet demeanor. However she would let you know when you “crossed the line”. Her parents Norman and Mae Ida Woodson, brothers John D. Hudson and Walter Fisher, preceded her in death. Martha leaves to cherish precious memories her husband Charlie F. Williams, sons Michael A. Woodson and Yves M. Milsap, Sr.(Shana), sisters Marie Booker of Peoria, IL, Earnestine Randle of Riverside, CA, Mary Woodson and Eula Woodson of Peoria, IL, Claudia Woodson of Long Beach, CA, grandchildren, Yves M. Milsap, Jr. (Donna), Lawrence E. Ceaser, Julian L. Woodson, Jordan J. Woodson, great grandchildren, Aleeyah Milsap and Aliviah Milsap. t’s summer – it’s hot and you are sweating more than usual. Surely you are drinking at least the recommended eight glasses of water per day – but is that enough to make up for the extra fluid loss this time of year? Under normal circumstances, eight ounces should be enough water to meet your needs as far as bodily functions go, but is it really enough? During a heat wave (defined as three days of temperatures of 90°F or more), the most important thing is staying hydrated. And, people who have a heart condition, are older than 50, or are overweight may have to take extra precautions. Our bodies are about 75 percent water and blood is nearly 80 percent water, so it is necessary to replenish what is lost every day. When water is not replaced, blood thickens, forcing the heart to work harder and raising the risk of a heart attack. Staying hydrated, then, is essential for heart function, but it also helps with alertness, controlling appetite, and generally improving all activity. A good measure of hydration ( defined as the process of making your body absorb water or other liquid) is the color of your urine. If you are drinking enough water during the day, your urine should be a pale yellow color. If it’s darker than pale yellow, than that is usually a sign that you are dehydrated. To maintain a healthy fluid balance while in the dehydration zone, the following suggestions may help: 1. Keep a large water bottle handy to encourage you to drink water wherever and whenever. 2. Eat fruits and vegetables, which are great sources of water, daily not only to stay hydrated, but also to maintain optimal health. 3. Have a glass of water before each meal. 4. After each trip to the restroom, drink a glass of water to replenish your fluids. 5. Set reminders on your phone, watch, or e-mail to drink every hour. 6. Add a slice of lemon, lime, and/or mint to your water to give it some flavor without adding any extra calories.

Second’s Gazette

27

A word of caution regarding energy drinks: because they contain large amounts of sugar and stimulants, they can be counterproductive to maintaining fluid balance. In some instances, they may even be dangerous; researchers found that brands with caffeine and the amino acid taurine significantly raise blood pressure and heart rate. There's no getting around it. Drinking water is always best. Sadly, many people are chronically dehydrated and don't even know it. Because they have ignored their body's thirst signals for so long, they don't easily recognize them and so they confuse thirst for hunger. Constant snacking, and especially constant sugar cravings, can be one hidden sign of a dehydration imbalance. Severe dehydration has serious health consequences, but even mild dehydration may be damaging. Research shows that losing just 2 percent of your normal, well-hydrated body weight can contribute to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, confusion, and impaired mood. Dehydration can also cause headaches, and drinking plenty of water may help to relieve these types of headaches within a few hours. Dehydration is also a major risk factor for kidney stones, which now affect 1 in 11 adults (prevalence rates have nearly doubled over the past 15 years). Drinking plenty of water is key to preventing a recurrence, especially in hot summer months. Besides adequate hydration being essential to nearly all bodily functions and overall health, making sure we have the right balance of body fluids becomes extremely important if we want to maximize our performance. Hopefully these tips will help you implement your hydration strategy!
