Keep The Dream Alive 50 Years After

A

ugust 28, 2013 marks the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and the inspirational “I Have a Dream” speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Fifty years ago, more than 200,000 Americans gathered in Washington, D. C. for a political rally which became a key moment in the struggle for civil rights in the United States. Dr. King inspired millions across the world with the delivery of his famous speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Let’s continue to work to keep the “Dream” alive.

Triumph after Tragedy; Struggling with God’s Will Sons and Daughters, We are told: “Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, ‘Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me’”

(Jonah 1:1-2).

R

eading the story of Jonah reminds me of many of us. The story is more than a great fish story! Rather, it confronts saints with our inner battle of wills, which many experience today. Jonah personifies the way we question God’s guidance and resist what’s in our deepest heart we know He has been urging us to do, or to be. We are a “Jonah” whenever we find it difficult to say “Yes” to God’s best for us. To prepare ourselves for what the Lord Christ may want to say to us, I’d like us to focus, in our minds’ eye, on the people we find it most difficult to love. On the screen of your consciousness flash the faces of the types and groups of people whom you are most critical and judgmental of. Think of the personalities you write off, hoping never to have contact with, or be responsible for them. These are people who have become enemies in your mind because of what they do, say, or believe. Think about them as you ponder Jonah’s story. God may have some marching orders for you that will challenge you to a power struggle within over His will for you. Whatever tragedy you are in or passing through, do not put up a struggle with God. Jonah paid the fare for his proud, exclusive, personal disobedience, and private delusion. You can have triumphant victory after tragedy. Give it to the Lord today. I love you! Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,

Dawn Renee Jackson

D

awn Renee Jackson is a resident of Perris, California and a longtime member of Second Baptist Church. She is a member of the Board of Ushers.

Dawn graduated from Monrovia High School and Chaffey Adult School in 1990. She currently attends Mount San Antonia Community College. She is in pursuit of a degree in Sociology to become a Child and Family Therapist with an emphasis in Child Development. In her spare time she gives advice to families on raising their children, which many of those families praise her for giving them insight to their child’s development. Dawn states that her proudest accomplishment was finishing high school because she showed her family that she could do it not only for herself, but for them too. Her favorite mentor is Diakona Melva D. Hill. She started as just a teacher during new member’s class, but she quickly became a tutor who helped her learn who Christ was, in her. She was a counselor not only through school but through late night conversations with life situations and soon became a close friend. Dawn considers Diakona La Vonne Husband, her oldest sister, as her female role model. From birth, she has always looked up to her because she was always like a mother figure. Dawn states, “through her sisters love of her children she taught her how to love and how to be a woman who puts family first”. Dawn states, “She taught me that trials and tribulation help to make a strong woman and person”. Dawn always helps others regardless if it is through the Word or just being a listening ear. She utilizes Facebook and Candy Crush to release daily stress, as well as, texting and talking to friends and family on the phone. Her favorite color is purple, not because of a flower, but it became my favorite because of the singer Prince. Dirty Dancing is my favorite movie and I have watched it 35 times and she is able to quote it until this very day. Dawn’s super power is guiding children’s development.

THE NEW MEMBERS CLASS PRESENTS "A Thief In The Night" on August 4 and August 11 from 9:45 - 10:30 AM. September 1 and 8, "A Distant Thunder".

A THIEF IN THE NIGHT One of the most unique and widely seen motion pictures of all times. Chilling prophecies come to life in this acclaimed thriller. Patty is a modern young woman living for the future. Until she awakens one morning to find her husband gone and the radio reporting that millions of people have mysteriously vanished. As dramatic, earth-shaking events begin to unfold around her. Patty realizes she is living in the end times. Adventure and suspense build to a thought-provoking climax in this powerful gripping film.

A DISTANT THUNDER (A THIEF IN THE NIGHT II) A Distant Thunder continues to illustrate prophecy through the story of the Tribulation begun in A Thief in the Night. Bible teachings are made clear as we see the seven seal judgments break loose upon the earth. This action thriller finds Patty, a young woman living in the "end times" running as a fugitive, trying to hide from the ever-increasing evil. Relentlessly pursued and finally captured by UNITE forces, she is given a choice: receive "the Mark", or die as a martyr. A powerful film that shows the consequences of neglecting Jesus Christ as Savior.

History Revised

By Twyla McDonald

O

ver the past weeks, we have seen the Supreme Court overturned rulings on laws that had been established years ago in an effort to proclaim that the U. S. is a progressive country; not plagued with issues that were once a reality. One law that was modified by the Supreme Court was the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Act that was deemed necessary to ensure minorities the same opportunity as their Caucasian counterparts to be able to vote and not be intimidated when they showed up at the polls to have their votes counted. In 1965, activists had been protesting and petitioning for all people to be allowed to vote without any qualms or concerns. But it wasn’t until the murder of voting-rights activists in Philadelphia and Mississippi that national attention to this issue was gained, along with other numerous incidents of violence and terrorism. Finally, the unprovoked attack, on March 7, 1965 by state troopers, on peaceful marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, marching to the state capitol in Montgomery, persuaded the President and Congress to take action to stop Southern politicians who were resistance to change in voting rights legislation (U. S. Department of Justice, 2013). The Voting Rights Act was established to “Suspend literacy, knowledge, and character tests designed to keep African Americans from voting in the South. It also authorized the appointment of Federal voting examiners and barred discriminatory poll taxes” (The History Place, 2011). On August 6, 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson and renewed in 1975, 1984, and 1991.

here is so much going on in the world today! Proposition 8 was overturned allowing same sex marriage in many states. A major murder case in Florida could change the hearts and minds of many Americans about the current racial divide. As much as the world is changing constantly, God never changes!!! Having a relationship with Christ means we are in the world, but not of the world. This world can do all the “Sodom and Gomorrah” stuff it wants to; but I’m going with Jesus, all the way. In Acts 9, Jesus met Saul on the road to Damascus and totally turned his life around. Saul was blinded for three days which means he had to depend upon someone to guide him and care for him whom he could not see (hmmm). I also know many other people whom the Lord totally changed their direction in life. It doesn’t matter if they give Him the credit or not, I know He did it. This being said, the Lord can still change the direction of a life or a society from “going down” to “coming up,” if He’s asked.

So until He comes again, we will continue to believe that God can do anything! Amen.

What A Friend we Have In Jesus Lord, we know our sin is never private, though we may try to hide it. Help us to remember that we belong to You and to one another; and that what we do individually grieves You , and impacts fellow Christians.

If you're headed in the wrong direction, God allows U-turns.

By Joseph M. Scriven (1855) What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer! Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy-laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there. Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear; May we ever, Lord, be bringing All to Thee in earnest prayer. Soon in glory bright, unclouded, There will be no need for prayer— Rapture, praise, and endless

worship Will be our sweet portion there.

THE BOOKSHELF Get to the Heart of Dr. King's Momentous Message

T

his eye-opening book presents Dr. King's famous speech in modern, accessible language. What did Martin Luther King, Jr., mean when he said, “Seared in the flames of withering injustice?” or “The tranquilizing drug of gradualism?” Now kids can read Dr. King's important speech in words they truly understand. “Even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream; because we face problems today. We will still face problems tomorrow. Still, I have a dream” (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.). In addition to the original and translated version of the speech, a short history of the events surrounding the Civil Rights Movement is also included.

The first man specifically referred to as Black was "Simeon the Niger" in Acts 13:1. "Niger" means Black in Latin.

our men, One calling: To serve and protect! As law enforcement officers, they face danger every day. Yet when tragedy strikes close to home, these fathers are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, and their faith. From this struggle will come a decision that changes all of their lives. With action, drama, and humor, this fourth film from a series produced by Sherwood Pictures embraces God’s promise to “turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers.” Souls will be stirred, and hearts will be challenged to be...COURAGEOUS! This is a wonderful movie to watch with a group of young men to start the conversation about being “A Man of God, and the Priest of Their Homes.” This movie can be purchased on-line from Christian Cinema.com, or other distributors of Christian movies. ~Precious~

Taking Care of You

A

s you walk through a season with love ones who are dealing with changes, this can drastically impact your life, remember these tips:

Take Care of You: Take care of yourself both physically and emotionally. Taking time for yourself is not selfish, but will improve your capacity to care for love ones.

Ask for Help: Most people want to help, but do not know what to do. Accept help when it is offered.

Be Aware of Depression: Depression can strike anyone; and caregivers are especially vulnerable.

Value Yourself: Amazing work is done in caring for a loved one; recognize the important and good job you are doing and how valuable you are.

Manage Your Stress: You can strengthen your coping skills by communicating your feelings and needs, setting limits and making decisions to do things for yourself. Identify one or two people with whom you can speak freely about your feelings and needs. Physical exercise, creative activities, humor, participating in social/family events are effective strategies.

Educate Yourself: Knowledge is empowering; get as much information as you can. The more you know, the better prepared you will be.

You Are More Than a Caregiver: Some people experience a loss of roles and relationships they once had with a loved one before an illness. Identify ways to keep personal relationships and family roles alive.

Talk to Other Caregivers: Caregivers who share resources and their own personal experiences report less stress and fewer problems.

Utilize Assistance Programs: Take advantage of local, state, and federal programs that support and assist caregivers. Call your doctor or your health insurance provider to get referrals to agencies or groups covered under your health plan. Jessie Anderson, R.N.

I ran across this lonely man who's head was hanging down, I asked: "What seems to be your trouble? Why you look'n at the ground?" He said "My life is at an end, and I don't know what to do! I've lost all that I possessed, my family and money too." "Don't worry friend," I then replied. "I know just how you feel." "There's an answer to your problem, Listen! here's the real." "There's two heavy pieces of wood to pick up, and a Man you need to follow.” You have previously been selected, since your life and heart are so hallow. He then asked "Won't that wood be heavy? I think I'll need help tonight." I said, "This day, open the door to your heart and He'll make your burden light." So the man picked up the pieces of wood, which at first seemed awkward and strange, Then as he followed the anointed man, he began to experience a change. He noticed the wood was now a cross, and far more easier to carry. He started talking to the one he followed, expressing his troubles and worries, Soon a friendship grew and developed there, a relationship like no other, He gathered fruit along the way, Soon others followed called sisters and brothers. So, the loss the man felt was then replaced with a new family and treasures overflowing, All who followed along the way realized the Man is GOD all knowing, All being, and all powerful. He exist, He is GOD WITH US!!! Now the previously sad man looks up to the clouds, In Jesus Christ he trust. One day the man thanked me for the good advice, for telling him to follow that Man, He is the only one that solves all our problems as only Jesus can. Amen.
