Bishop’s Epistle

December 31, 2017

LOOKING BACK, AND LOOKING FORWARD OPTIMISTICALLY! Sons and Daughters in Light! Grace to You! God says: “Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5). God has graciously divided our life into years so that we can draw a demarcation line with an attitude of gratitude for the past and faith for the future. New Year’s Eve is a time for four looks and for each look there is a special gift from God. FIRST, take a backward look on this past year. That reflective gaze at what has happened is a combination of thanksgiving for all God has done and confession for the failures and sins that lurk in our memories. God offers the gift of absolution. NEXT, we take an inward look. Get in touch with the person who lives in your skin. Are you more the person you long to be today than you were a year ago? What can you affirm? What would you like to change? For this look God offers the gift of resolution.

Now we are for a forward look. Ask God to help you clarify His goals for you. If you threw caution to the wind, what would you dare to attempt for His glory in your relationships and responsibilities? God’s third gift is inspiration.

LASTLY, take an upward look. Think magnificently about the majesty of God. Meditate on His grace that has brought you to the threshold of a new year and a new beginning.

Commit the future to Him. Listen to His promise and feel the surge of hope. Memorize this verse from Jeremiah 29:11 and make it the basis of your New Year’s prayer of dedication: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you…thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Now accept God’s greatest gift - the gift of the fresh infusion of His Spirit.
